Casino industry investment interested by Taiwan By Tiffany Chang An investment investigating trip of visiting team led by the Chairman of Tourist Association and the Chairman of the City Council from Penghu, Taiwan was completed with fruitful conclusion May 20, 2001. The visiting and investigation team annouced to develop the tourist venture with Las Vegas casino industry for Penghu. Recently, Bloomberg News reported that the Venetian, wholly owned by Las Vegas Sands Inc., planned to build an $800 million casino with a Taiwanese company in Penghu, which is a small island midway between Taiwan and China. Sheldon Adelson, Chairman of the Venetian, said in a statement that it was a great honor to meet with President Chen Shui-bian in Taiwan. "President Chen encourages LV Sands Inc. to invest in the tourism economy of Taiwan," said Adelson. "Chen said as an island country Taiwan should develop its own international, ocean tourism. The President hopes that Adelson's investment will enable Taiwan's tourism industry to become part of global tourism links."
