CROWD PLEASER: Dances With Water

A staff of 33 people keep the Fountains of Bellagio impressive, inspiring
By SONYA PADGETT
REVIEW-JOURNAL

Four kinds of fountains are used in Bellagio's water show: minishooters, supershooters, extreme shooters and oarsmen. All were created by the Florida-based company WET Design.

Scott O'Connor monitors the action of the Fountains of Bellagio from the control room.

Bellagio fountain manager Curtis Hunton describes the use of oarsmen, a type of fountain used in the resort's Lake Como show.

Divers and fountain technicians work in the "Batcave," an area used for maintaining Lake Como as well as the technical equipment that makes the water show possible.

Tourists gather nightly in front of the Bellagio fountains to watch the spectacular water show.

Acrowd stands transfixed in front of the Bellagio, watching plumes of water dance and shoot nearly 240 feet into the air to the tune of Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA."

"How does it work?" one bystander wonders aloud at the display's crescendo, as lights, music and water meld into a seemingly magical spectacle.

The whole show, whether it's set to a Frank Sinatra classic or contemporary country song, is breathtaking in its apparent simplicity and probably leaves more than one visitor awed and mystified.

The actual inner workings are anything but effortless, and require a 33-member team to stage 30 to 40 shows a day, says Curtis Hunton, manager of the Fountains of Bellagio.

Shows run every half-hour from 3 to 7 p.m., then every quarter-hour until midnight. On Saturdays and Sundays, shows run on the half-hour from noon to 7 p.m.

Hunton is the man ultimately responsible for ensuring that the 4,798 lights, 213 speakers and the more than 1,000 individual fountains in the lake work on a day to day basis.

Lake Como is 13 feet at its deepest point and contains 8.5 acres of water, which present unique challenges to those maintaining the equipment. More than 165 miles of wires and cables connect the different pieces of this giant underwater jigsaw puzzle and require vigilant oversight. The last thing Hunton wants to do, he says, is disappoint his audience.

Since the Bellagio opened in 1998, the fountains have consistently been one of the resort's most popular attractions, and only five shows have been scrubbed because of technical difficulty, Hunton notes.

Four main rooms filled with equipment support the fountains. The workers jokingly refer to their underground area as "The Batcave" because it's in the side of the faux rock cliff that surrounds the lake, making it look like a cave, Hunton says.

An engineer sitting in the show control room that overlooks the lake pushes a green button to start the fountains dancing and the music playing, but that action is a small part of the overall workings.

Compressors deliver air to the 1,198 fountains, which then forces water out at a rate of 125 to 500 pounds per square inch. Everything is choreographed to the last second by the Florida-based WET Design. While the company is responsible for setting the fountains' dance to music, it is Hunton and his crew who are on the front lines keeping things running smoothly.

If the wind gusts too strong, especially from the south to the north, the fountains must be adjusted, to keep from soaking bystanders and to maintain the integrity of the show, Hunton says. When it rains, the crew has to adjust water levels using underground private wells. If the lake level rises too much, it will keep the fountains from coming up to the surface and functioning properly, Hunton explains.

The workers' backgrounds and training vary, from electricians and divers to computer technicians and welders. All workers are rescue scuba certified, Hunton says, because so much of their time is spent on and under the water.

Every day starting at 6 a.m., workers take small rafts and boats out onto the lake to perform regular maintenance.

Two times each month, a team of divers undertakes cleaning the lake. It's not an easy task, taking about three days to complete. During the winter, the divers are working in water that averages about 30 to 40 degrees. The crew checks to ensure that the individual components are free of debris, while also removing objects and trash that visitors toss into Lake Como. They also filter all of the lake water through 50 individual filters.

Over the years, divers have pulled some unusual things from the water, including thousands of dollars in coins and gaming chips, sunglasses, food and other items. The money is donated to local charities, Hunton says.

Each device has a personal address, allowing workers to "talk" directly to it, or to groupings of fountains, Hunton says. Sensitive computer programs work to pick up malfunctions, and can notify personnel during the show, as well as enable them to troubleshoot before a show finishes.

May God bring you not what you want this year, but what He, in His infinite wisdom, knows you need
By Helen M. Young

On December 22, 2004, Dr. Tony Lei received a Merry christmas card from Mrs. Helen M. Young from Malibu, California. Mrs. Young is the wife of late President M. Norvel Young of Pepperdine University. Inside the card is a message from her:

THE TURNING OF THE SEASONS

At the turning of the seasons and the year,
At this time of gathering of precious loved ones,
I am reminded of the constancy and generosity of God.
Even when we forget to do good, He does not.
Even when we fail, He will not.

May God bring you not what you want this year, but what He, in His infinite wisdom, knows you need.

Have a blessed holiday .....
And thank you for the part you play in my life!

---Helen M. Young

A good dinner party with Dean Dr. Linda Livingstone of Pepperdine University's Graziadio School of Business and Management in Las Vegas!
By GSBPA of WBTI*1

Welcome! Welcome our Dean Dr. Linda Livinstone of Pepperdine University's Graziadio School of Business and Management to Las Vegas!

Dear friends, let's share the following golden words of wisdom with our faculty members please:

"A (woman or a) man finds joy in giving an apt reply --- and how good is a timely word!" --- Proverbs 15 : 23 of the Bible
"The reward for work done is the opportunity to do more." --- Jonas Salk, MD
"Freedom is the oxygen of the soul." --- Moshe Dayan
"With sincere love, it's like living in Heaven. On the other hand, with cruel hate, it's like living in Hell. Fighting and malice for selfish gain belong to Hell. Cooperation and encouragement to promote quality of life are attitudes of Heaven." --- Dr. Tony T. Lei
"Do to others as you would have them do to you." --- Luke 6 : 31 of the Bible
"The great Winston Churchill said, 'We all make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.' Tony, I know that you like to exemplify this inspiration same as it's my driving force by which I start out each day." --- Judge Natalie L. Tyrrell of Nevada

Dr. Linda Livingstone, Dean of Pepperdine University's Graziadio School of Business and Management, invited several selected and achieved alumni to dinner with her at the Pietro's Gourmet Restaurant of Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 14, 2004.

"Dear Dr. Tony Lei: This message will confirm your attendance for dinner with Dr. Linda Livingstone, Dean of Pepperdine University's Graziadio School of Business and Management. If you have arranged with me to bring a guest, your guest (Judge Mark Denton, District Judge of Nevada) is confirmed as well. Thank you and enjoy the dinner. Sincerely," wrote Pamela Bellew, Director, Advancement and Alumni Relations.

The presented individuals as guests were Dr. Tony Lei, Mr. Hector Mon, Dr. Wanda M. Costen, Mr. David Donovan, Mr. Douglas W. Hensley, Mr. Michael Jabara, and Judge Mark Denton.

Dr. Tony Tung-tien Lei received MBA with straight A from Pepperdine University in 1969. He received his Doctor of Education degree in Institutional Management from Pepperdine University in 1990. He was an Assoiciate Professor of Information Management of the Graduate School of Business Administration of National Chunghsin University and a Fellow of Management for Dean Dr. Donald R. Sime of the School of Business and Management of Pepperdine University.

Ms. Helen Hsueh and Mr. Robert Song were invited by Dr. Tony Lei as our representative and photographer for the Chinese multimedia. Helen Hsueh is the President of Las Vegas Chinese Daily News, while Robert Song is the President of Pan-America Legal Services Company. "It's good to have more people joining us as friends of our Pepperdine family," said Dean Livingstone at the Dinner Party.

"It was a pleasure having you join us at our dinner. Thanks to for sending the pictures. They are great," wrote Dr. Livingstone to Robert Song, who sent out the pictures to all participants soon after the Dinner.

Pepperdine University is a very famous university. Its main campus at Malibu, California is the leading beauty of noted universities in the world.

"Pepperdine University has earned a reputation for its responsiveness to career-oriented professionals," said Dr. David Davenport, former President of the University.2* The Graziadio School of Business and Management has enjoined one of the highest reputation for Pepperdine University.*3 To educate executives and managers with innovative knowledge and modern technology is a core competency of the Graziadio School . "Indeed, this year has marked a number of significant benchmarks for the Graziadio School. This fall we welcomed the largest class of full-time M.B.A. students in our school's history," said Dr. Linda Livingstone. "In a time when many business schools have been challeged by decreasing student enrollment, this drasmatic increase --- up more than 305 from last year --- was both a testment to the quality of our curriculum as well as the hard work of our committed staff and faculty. This year's class boasts an average GMAT score of 636 and includes students from more than a dozen countries." *4

A distiguished group of professors is offering speeches and seminars to business owners and executives. Please join Dean Linda A. Livingstone for a special series on executive leadership hosted by the Graziadio School of Business and Management. You may learn what some of today's leading business authors have to say about effectively communicating vision and strategy, building and maintaining a company's reputation, leading an organization to greater success, and much more.

"One of the Graziadio School's core is its ability to successfully address the unique challenges of executive learning. This forum is an important part of an effort to extend Pepperdine's reputation and recognition in this arena. It provides an opportunity for world-class thought leaders in knowledge creation, knowledge dissemination, and knowledge utilization to come together in an informal setting to discuss the key challenges of executive learning and leadership development ," said Dr. Robert Fulner.*5

"Rapidly accelerating change is the critical challenge in virtually every industry today. The complexities of our world demand managers and workers with dramatically increased capavilities. The Graziadio School has been developing value-center leaders for more than a quater century. During that time, it has become the premier provider of quality business talent in California and the western United States." said Dr. Linda Livingstone*6

Pepperdine Pepperdine University MBA ranks first in 15 schools of California.*7

Recently, the Los Angeles Business Journal ranked and reported that Pepperdine University's Graziadio School of Business and Management was named "the pacesetter" in MBA education in Los Angeles County. The School retained top ranking ahead of USC's Marshall School of Business and The Anderson School at UCLA which placed second and third respectively.

As the market share leader in California, graduates of MBA annually from Graziadio School are more than any other school in the state. It is the sixth largest AACSB-accredited school in the United States. The success of this school should be credited to its fruitful efforts to delivering practical, results-oriented education that addresses the needs of working professionals and executives.

Dr. Livingstone received her B.S., M.B.A., and Ph.D. from Oklahoma State University. She assured her responsibilities as the Dean of the School on June 1, 2002.

Dr. Livingstone brought an international perspective to Pepperdine University. She helped develop and teach courses in an MBA program in Jinan, China. She expressed a keen interest in building additional bridges between Pepperdine MBA curriculum and the corporate world based on her prior experience in developing semester-long consulting projects with major companies for MBA students.

"Our Graziadio School is an outstanding business school with a national reputation. It is one of only a few schools across the country that has the potential to build a national and international reputation across all of its programs customized for executives, full-time, and fully employed students. And it is probably the only school with a faith-based mission committed to developing values-centered leaders that can accomplish this goal," said Dr. Livingstone.

At the time of Dr. Linvingstone's appointment, Dr. Tony Lei wished her endeavor to lead the Graziadio School into this millennium with academic excellence, practicality expertise, and spiritual values. A special program of MBA/PKE designed for presidents and key executives internationally is in ugent need for the cooperation of the Graziadio School and WBTI. "The spirit of both innovation and pioneers has motivated America to be a leading and prosperous country in the world. As an integrative academic program of the professional education directed to substantial gains in executive competence, modern technology, innovative knowledge, and spirit of entrepreneurship; an unique feature of one week workshop in Las Vegas for the cooperated MBA/PKE Program should be designed for the Chinese speaking business executives and owners of the international world mainly from China, Malaysia, Singapore, and Taiwan," said Dr. Tony Lei, President of Washington Business and Technology Institute.*8

Coordinated with the faculty members recently, Dr. Tony Lei has designed educational programs of the CPM and MBA/PKE with Dr. Keong Leong; the CMPA and MPA/SME with Dr. Lee Bernick; and the CEH with Dr. William Thompson for the GSBPA of WBTI.

"It's a great market in China for our MBA programs with WBTI's Graduate School of Business and Public Administration," talked Dean Livingstone with Dr. Tony Lei, who sat next to her during the Dinner Party at the Tropicana on May 14, 2004 in Las Vegas. "I'd like Dr. Terry Young go together with your Graduate School for the launching of our MBA programs. Dr. Young is in charge of the international management programs for our Graziadio School of Business and Management," she continued.

The recent educational and academic publication of our Grazidio School of Business and Management of Pepperdine University

By Tiffany Chang

It's our pleasure to post the information about educational and academic study and research of the "Graziadio Business Report" of our Grazidio School of Business and Management. The School is one of the famous and achieved institution in Pepperdine University, Malibu, California, U. S. A..
We are also pleased to share the following information and knowledge with all our friends and faculty members of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI):

We are pleased to announce that there is now a new issue online. We invite you to visit the home page at http://gbr.pepperdine.edu/ or to click through to one or more of the features and articles below.*1

Slips, Trips and Falls: A primer for businesses on the law of premises liability
Charles Hunt, J.D.
http://gbr.pepperdine.edu/041/liability.html
Inviting the public into your place of business - or even to walk on the sidewalk in front of your business - carries some risk. What is your responsibility if someone trips or falls down while on your premises? Where are the places that you might need extra security in order to avoid someone being harmed? What kind of practices will provide you with a good defense should something happen? (Hint: Proactive safety measures as a routine part of business are a good idea!) To see what else might be helpful, read Charles Hunt's primer on liability.

The Dollar vs. the Euro: How low will it go?
Peggy Crawford, Ph.D., Terry Young, Ph.D. and Julia Takhtarov
http://gbr.pepperdine.edu/041/devaluation.html
The fall of the dollar against most of the world's currencies over the past year requires that businesses consider another layer of complexity in making plans: How will the price of imported parts or goods (including oil), be affected by the slide of the dollar and how will that affect my business? On the other hand, can I sell more abroad if American goods cost less overseas? The authors tackle these questions, with a particular focus on the relationship of the dollar to the euro.

Currency Exchange Quiz
http://gbr.pepperdine.edu/041/quiz.html
When you have finished the article, or maybe before, you can try your hand at the Currency Exchange Quiz. It is an interesting way to see how well you understand the concepts - and no one even knows your score unless you want to brag.

Slowing Runaway Juries: Court decisions provide new guidance for punitive damage awards
Larry Bumgardner, J.D.
http://gbr.pepperdine.edu/041/punitive.html
Businesses facing a lawsuit over some alleged product defect or improper behavior often fear that they may face punitive damage awards in the millions or even billions of dollars imposed by juries determined to "send a message." A recent Supreme Court decision provides corporate defendants some hope of relief. Find out what the guidelines now are based on a recent Supreme Court decision.

Using Conflict to Your Advantage: Butting heads is not always bad.
Teri C. Tompkins, Ph.D., and Kathryn S. Rogers, Ph.D.
http://gbr.pepperdine.edu/041/learningteams.html
Based on an in-depth study by Tompkins of work teams in the aerospace industry, the authors provide a four-stage process for teams that want to grow into effective learning teams. They show that while conflict is endemic in organizational life, it need not always be negative. Those working together must understand the basic principles of how to use conflict to facilitate becoming a learning team that increases its capacity to take effective action through diffusion of knowledge and skills.

Wired! Hong Kong, China, and Japan flex their electronic muscles
Mark Chun, Ph.D. and Charla Griffy-Brown, Ph.D.
http://gbr.pepperdine.edu/041/itinfrastructures.html
Whether your business is B2B or B2C, if you are planning to visit or do business in China, Japan, or Hong Kong you need to understand the nature of the electronic infrastructure and whether or not you will be able communicate in the same way you are used to doing back home. Chun and Griffy-Brown provide an overview of how these infrastructures have developed and what you can expect. They also point out the need to understand the cultural expectations that will also be there.

Merging Successfully: The importance of understanding organizational culture in mergers and acquisitions
Kent Rhodes, Ed.D.
http://gbr.pepperdine.edu/041/mergers.html
Mergers and acquisitions as a growth strategy seem to be coming back into vogue. In this article Rhodes warns that creating a new company is not as easy as it may appear on paper. However he doesn't stop there. He identifies particular problems and then strategies to deal with the most elusive, but critical, element of the new company -- its culture.

A Conversation with Tom Ross:
CIO and Vice President, Information Systems Division of American Honda
Mark Chun, Ph.D.
http://gbr.pepperdine.edu/041/conversation.html
Professor Chun, who teaches in the area of information systems, talks with Mr. Ross about the Honda culture, about the issues involved in moving from a technical position to managing a business, and the importance of real communication for a successful business operation.

Don't Panic: Try the way of the trout
Charla Griffy-Brown, Ph.D.
http://gbr.pepperdine.edu/041/editor.html
The always-creative Dr. Griffy-Brown helps us understand the importance of being focused and constant, even in turbulent times. Using a number of metaphors from the sea and its life, she provides some good suggestions for business practice - along with introducing this issue of GBR.

The Book Corner
http://gbr.pepperdine.edu/041/books.html
The response to this new feature was very positive in our last issue. We are therefore pleased to bring four new suggestions for books. This time the range of topics is broad, but we believe that you will find all of these very worthy of your consideration. We have added a new feature where you can click directly through to Amazon and order the book if you like.

The Arcade: Consumer Credit Calculators
http://gbr.pepperdine.edu/041/arcade.html
Instead of a strictly business software package this time, GBR brings you some calculators that may help you sort out your own personal financial situation. In a time when many jobs have been lost to downsizing, or when people have decided to try their hand at consulting or beginning a new business, financial decisions are critical. You can use these calculators to help figure out your situation. And if you find that you are already swimming in those turbulent waters that Dr. Griffy-Brown writes about, then there are suggestions here for you as well.

We hope that you find this issue of the Graziadio Business Report informative and valuable. We also invite you to pass this message and information about GBR along to your colleagues and friends.

A Message (concised) from President Dr. Andrew Benton of Pepperdine University, U. S. A.
By Andrew K. Benton*1

Promise are important to our community. The promise we make today provide the foundation for the work we will do tomorrow. Faithfulness to our heritage ennobles and illuminates all that we do. I have not forgotten the pormise I made in my inaugural address as I took office in the year 2000.*2

Since beginning the leadership opportunity, I continue to believe that our greatest challenge are contained in the areas of resources, deversity, heritage, community, and scholarship. We have managed our resources well during this challenging period. We have increased our diversity.

I think our heritage provides light, really good light, for learning. We illumininate lives with immutable truths and notions of oughtness and rightness. We ask no quarter in our competition with the finest, shinning institutions of learning in America, and we offer the brilliance and the unique dimension of values in our classes. We invite the presence of God in the midst of all that we do: that, more than anything else, lights our way.

As much as I feel urgency about other things, I feel urgency about fidelity and constancy and stewarship in our heritage of faith. there is power in imagery, and there is power in words. Here are some of the most powerful works I've seen --- our mission statement:

"Pepperdine is a christian university committed to the highest standards of academic excellence and Christian values, where students are strenghtened for lives of purpose, service, and leadership."*3

Welcome to Graziadio Alumni Events of Pepperdine University
By Tiffany Chang

The Graziadio School of Business and Management has enjoined one of the highest reputation for Pepperdine University.*1 To educate executives and managers with innovative knowledge and modern technology is a core competency of the Graziadio School . This year's class boasts an average GMAT score of 636 and includes students from more than a dozen countries." *2

A distiguished group of professors and consultants joined corporate human resource professionals to discuss wide-ranging issues in leadership development at The Graziadio School's second annual Executive Learning Forum in Pepperdine University. The event was created and facilitated by Dr. Robert Fulmer, Virtue Professor of Management at The Graziadio School. It was held at the Malibu Campus of Pepperdine Univesity on March 16-17, 2001.

The Forum has faciliated the "real-world" management practice for the School's MBA programs. One of them is designed for experienced managers, while the other is designed for presidents and key executives (MBA/PKE).

"One of the Graziado School's core is its ability to successfully address the unique challenges of executive learning. Robert Fulner.*3

The program of MBA/PKE is made available exclusively to executives in senior management positions and to entrepreneurs. This is an integrative academic program of professional education directed toward substantial gains in executive competence. The Forum may become a creative design as a mentor for lauching the program locally, nationally, and internationally.

Professor Fulmer opened the forum by asking participants to share what major insights or learning they had acqires during the past year along with the changes that had impacted their industries since the previous year's forum. For many, technology and the impact of Web-based intelligence had been instrumants of change. Other participants note challenges due to mergers and organizational changes.

The participans of the Forum included: Nancy Adler, McGill University professor and author; John Alexander, president of the Center for Creative Leadership; Doug Anderson, founder and managing partner of the Center for Executive Development; Jay Conger, professor of leadership at The London Business School and the University of Southern California; Linda Doyle, president and CEO of Havard Business School Publishing; Bob Fogel, president of Harvard Business School Interactive; John Humphrey, chairman of the Forum Corporation; Marshall Sashkin, author and George Washington University professor; Edgar Schein, MIT professor, author, and leadership consultant; Steve Stumpf, author, professor, and former dean of professional development at Booz Allen Hamiton. The Graziadio School was represented by its Dean Otis Baskin and eight faculty members.

Questions such as "What are the new partnership that we need to create, and how can these be structured?" and "What would it be like if our work were truly important to the world?" were asked by him for the participants to give responses. These themes, woven throughout the forum, triggered lively exchanges among the panelists. At the conclusion, many were already anticipating the next forum.*4

"Rapidly accelerating change is the critical challenge in virtually every industry today. The complexities of our world demand managers and workers with dramatically increased capavilities. The Grsaziadio School has been developing value-center leaders for mor than a quater century. During that time, it has become the premier provider of quality business talent in California and the western United States." said Dr. Linda Livingstone*5 Dr. Livinstone has been the Dean of this School since June 1, 2002. She received her B.S., M.B.A., and Ph.D. from Oklahoma State University. Dr. Livingstone will bring an international perspective to Pepperdine University. She has helped develop and teach courses in an MBA program in Jinan, China.

Tony Lei, President of Washington Business and Technology Institute.*5

"International students are drawn to the U.S. for its educational and employment opportunities. In many cases, these individuals speak multiple languages and are experienced in global business. The cultural expertis and business savvy they offer can really help to move your business forward" said Nicole Hall, Director of Career Resources for Pepperdine University's Grazidio School. "Universties offer a wide range of specialized degrees including executive and international M. B. A. programs. With a little research, you can locate candidates with the right background and experience."*6

"Thousands of men and women have chosen The George L. Graziadio School of Business and Management because of its distinctive blend of qualities. Many enroll in executive program, having already achieved position of senior leadership, but wanting to recapture that competitive edge and creative fervor. It is the worldwide network of alumni that validates our extraordinary mission o f preparing good people to 'make big plans' and 'aim high in hope and work,'" said Dr. Andrew Benton, President of Pepperdine University.*7

It is our pleasure to post the academic activities and social events of the Graziadio School of Business and Management of Pepperdine University in advancing the educational excellence and speiritual value for our friends and community:

U. S. Congresswoman Shelley Berkley's mission and promise for 2004
By CI of WBTI*1

On February 20, 2004, Keith Hinkle, Associate Vice Chancellor, Center for Estate and Gift Planning, Pepperdine University, wrote Dr. Tony Tung-tien Lei, President of Washington Business and Technology Institute that, in the 2001 film, "Pay It Forward," a boy aged at eleven receives a homework assignment where the students are challenged to come up with an idea to "change the world." The name of the boy is Trevor. He decides to start a chain-reaction of good deeds by doing a favor for three people who will pay back the favor by paying "forward" good deeds to others.

"This film has captured what is at stake when you support the work of Pepperdine University. When you provide financial support, you are not 'paying back' Pepperdine you are 'paying forward' to future generations of Pepperdine students. You are saying that you value and appreciate your Pepperdine experience and relationships, and that you would like others to share that same experience," wrote Keith Hinkle.*2

"You may or may not be a teacher yourself, but through your donation, you participate in extending an unbroken chain of accumulated wisdom that must be renewed with each generation. This is how we, who have benefited by living in an educated society, must pay it forward to the next generation." *3

Gift from alumni enchance the education experience of the students and some times large enough to endow programs, classrooms, and scholarships of a college or univesity locally, nationally, and internationally. It is worth for us to "paying forward."

On February 23, 2004, U. S. Congresswoman wrote Dr. and Mrs. Tony Lei that,"Thank you for your generous contribution to my re-election campaign. I greatly appreciate your support. Please know that your help makes a significant difference. I look forward to continuing my service in Congress and shall endeavor to serve in the manner that merits your confidence in me." *4

Shelley Berkley is born a leader. Shelley is an educated leader. Shelley is a prctical and bright leader since her college life. She received her juris doctorate degree from San Deigo Law School. She was the former Regent of University and Colleges of Nevada. She has been Executive Advisor for Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) since 1996. Her successful leadership both good in work performance and human relations has won all her assistants' and followers' full and sincere respects. In order to celebrate Shelley Berkley's winning as U. S. Congresswoman, elected as a member of the International Relations Committee (IRC) of the Congress, and Dr. Tony Lei as her Senior Advisor; Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) and Chinese American Academic Association of Nevada (CAAAN) established the "Literature and Academic Forum" ("LAF") in 1999. It has been brought to you by Las Vegas Review-Journal through http://communitylink.reviewjournal.com/lvrj/wbti. *5

At the time when Shelley was elected as the Member of IRC, she told Las Vegas Review-Journal that to promote the tourism, trade, and investment with foriegn countries for Nevada and our states is her primary interest. Her emphasis is enhancing the 2004 mission of WBTI:
(1). To encourage and promote academic research, community service, humane spirit, and educational programs. (2). To launch and participate events and projects for the development and cooperation of tourism, education, business, and culture.*6 We are pleased to welcome her good wishes to all our citizens, residents, and visitors of Nevada that "I look forward to continuing my service in Congress and shall endeavor to serve in the manner that merits your confidence in me." *7

Today, one of the important slogan of the Graduate School of Business and Public Administration (GSBPA) of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) is: To become more effective online communication in every online venue!

Starting from 1980, the author had been benifit deeply from two main courses of the program of Doctorate Degree of Education (Ed. D.) in Institution Management of Pepperdine University.*1 They were: (1) ED 740 Computer Utilization in Institutional Management; and (2) ED 730 Methodological Approaches to Educational Research and Evaluation. The techonical skills and knowledge of information management had sharpened my abilities of the research, management, and teaching in an national organization of information management and the graduate school of business administration. After many years of administrative resposibility in higher policy-making organization and teaching business school of famous universities, the author concentrated effort to study and acqure the knowledge and utilization of information management in the United States of America ten years after he received M. B. A. from Pepperdine. My two years of computer consulting job at the Computer Laboratory of the Graduate School of Education and Pshchology and the School of Business and Management of Pepperdine University advanced the practical experience for me to complete my dessertation entitled "A Study of the Impact of Enrollment in a Computer Science Class on Mathematics Scores and Attendance in a Secondary School". I taught information management for five years at the Graduate School of Business Administration of National Chunghsing University.

Indeed, business achievement is the new yardstick of success in today's society. Therefore, business has become not only the fastest growing major in undergraduate institutions but also in graduate school of famous universities, nationally and internationally. The emphasis of the online communication skills and the quantitative analysis techniques with computers is one of the most important study for the art of success to the business students, professionals, executives, and owners.

In many ways, business school is at the center of this cultural phenomenon. For some, the business school is the passport to the boardroom, the ticket to the top of the corporate ladder. these schools, nationally and internationally, pump out the new generation of business leaders by hundreds of thousands. "They are the pipeline of raw material with which the nation's --- and the world's --- leading business build the future. And MBAs are not limited to the traditional corporate world: From Wall Street to Madison Avenue, from Sand Hill Road to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, today's MBAs lead organizations large and small, in every conceivable industry. They are the executives and entrepreneurs who power the economy."2

"UNLESS YOU'VE BEEN LIVING IN A CAVE, you've seen enormous changes in communications technology over the past two decades. From orbiting satellites routing long distance phone calls to email to undreamed-of growth of the Internet, the age of communicating online, using computers and networks, is upon us all," stated at the first paragraphy of the 'Introduction' of the book, "How to say it online: everything you need to know to master the new language of cyberspac," written by Kim Baker and Sunny Baker.*3

"And what could be better news? To keep in touch, there's nothing faster or cheaper than email. To gain access to information and people, the power of online communication expands your reach from the local to the global. To meet new friends and even romance a potential life partner, online venues provide rich opportunities (if you know the right things to say and the best way to say them). At school, the Internet places volumes of knowledge on ever subject at your fingertips, and at work, computer networks make business communication more efficient than ever." *4

Whether you are in business or in non-profit organization, you need to have a Web site. This seems to be a common wisdom in now- a-days. Think seriously about the needs of your market before you go onto the Web to make more money for business, to develop better non-profit organization, or to contribute to more community service. "It's hard to believe that Fred's Service Station really needs a Web Site to reap new profits. However, for some businesses and professional service firms, the Internet and web to gether offer viable marketing and distribution opportunities. Software companies, online magazines, and email order businesses can do quite well from the Web --- if the owners know how to say the right things on their sites. The Secrets of a Successful Web Site: Just having a site on the Web will do almost nothing to sell your products or services. To promote your Web site, there are three things you must do: (1). You must register your Web site with the best search engines. (2). You should consider using the many free and not free advertising opportunities on the Web. (3) You should search the Web regularly for competitive and related sites, where you can attach a link to your site." *5 To be more successful for your Web site, you need to be favored by the famous search engine services like Yahoo! (www.yahoo.com), Aol! (www.aol.com), Google! (www.google.com), Infoseek! (www.infoseek.com), among others.

"There is no longer any such thing as a purely national economy. The rest of the world is just too big to ignore, either as a market or as a competitor. If business schools do nothing other than to train their students to think internationally, they would have accomplished an important task," said John Young, CEO, Hewlett-Packard.*6

Innovation is the key to success, managers are looking everywhere in the global organization for new ideas. Modern companies would view Information technology (IT) as a major competitive differentiator. Strategic businesses emphazise the ueses of information technology for management. International companies develop their global IT platforms by integrating worldwide hardware, software, and Internet-based network architecture. Commuunication technology, for example the teleconferencing and computer networks, is making it possible for people from subsidiaries around the world to work together on project.

Many business are becoming global companies and moving toward transnational e-business strategies in which they integrate the global business activities of their subsidiaries and headquarters. The international dimemsions of managing global e-business technologies include dealing with cultural, political, and geoeconomic challenges posed by various countries for global marketplace. The e-business technologies are changing the distribution, relatonships, resources, and responsibilities of managers. Information Technology is helping managers of e-business to eliminate layers of amangement, enabling more collaborative forms of management, providing them with significant information technology resources, and confront them with major e-business and e-commerce challenge.

Commuunication technology, for example the teleconferencing and computer networks, is making it possible for people from subsidiaries around the world to work together on project.*7

In order to keep the online universe a productive, safe, communicative environment, it is interesting and worth to post the ten commandments for computer ethics. They were created by the Computer Ethics Institute: (1). Thou shalt not use a computer to harm other people. (2). Thou shalt not interfere with other people's computer work. (3). Thou shalt not snoop around in other people's files. (4). Thou shalt not use a computer to steal. (5). Thou shalt not use a computer to bear false witness. (6). Thou shalt not use or copy softwear for which you have not paid. (7). Thou shalt not use other people's computer resources without authorization. (8). Thou shalt not appropriate other people's intellectual output. (9). Thou shalt think about the social consequences of the program you write. (10). Thou shalt use a computer in ways that show consideration and respect.

A sucessful businessperson always know the old rule that says "It's easier to keep an existing customer than to find a new one." In online customer relationships, this rule is just as important. Your goal should not only to get new visitors, but to cultivate your customer base to yield repeat sales, services, and referrals from satisfied purchasers, clients, and patronagers. "Besides a good product or service, there are only three things you need for successful online customer relations: strong communication, common courtesy, and exemplary customer service. Unfortunately, these old-fashioned values are often missing in many companies' online promotional communication." *8

A Heritage of Faith for Our Pepperdine University
By Tiffany Chang

"Pepperdine People" is great! The Fall 2003 issue of "Pepperdine People" is here. "This brings to my mind the urgency of our times. We note the vanishing of a heroic generation that rebuilt the world after World War II. But the best way to honor those who have gone before us is to rise up and find the greatness in our own lives, the strength of character, the courage, the determination, the selflessness to adress the challenges that still lay before us. It is most appropriate to consider these thoughts within the context of our yearly theme, 'A Heritage of Faith,'" pointed out Dr. Andrew Benton, President of Pepperdine University, at the first page of the beautiful magazine with elegant standard of publication.*1 The magazine, "Pepperdine People," is published to inform donors and friends of the development and accomplishments of Pepperdine University and its people. A copy was sent to Dr. Tony Tung-tien Lei, President of Washington Business and Technology Institute by Pepperdine University in Malibu, California.

"Young men and women of vision, tenacity, and generosity are already taking their places in the work of continuing the legacy of those vanishing giants. But more heroes are needed in order to advance our mission into the future," continued the President*2

"The question is: How can we leave the world in a better condition than we found it ? There may be many answers to that, but only a few make much sense. Near the top of such answers is this: Build a teaching institution that is grounded in timeless truths, that makes it its business to offer solutions to the puzzles that young people ponder. Or, as our mission statement expresses it, 'Pepperdine is a Christian university committed to the hightest standards of academic excellence and Christian values, where students are strenghtened for lives of purpose, service, and leadership.' that is a mission worth investing a life in," concluded Dr. Benton.*3

At the beginging of this Message, Dr. Andrew Benton stated that, "We have completed an academic year that included notable successes." He is the seventh President of Pepperdine University. He is making the most impressive music of his life. He is a different kind of leader who harmonizes and improvises and leads a variety of wonderful "instruments" in an intricate and soaring symphony...whihc is Pepperdine University.*4 In the meantime, Dr. Tony Lei received a nice Christmas card from Dr. Andy Benton and his wife Debby stating that, "May the warmth of this special season fill your heart with joy and hope. We wish you and all those whom you love the very best in this holiday season and the coming year." *5

The Drecher Graduate Campus of Pepperdine University
By Tiffany Chang

After decades of dreaming, planning, and preparing, Pepperdine University was on the brink of an historic achievement. The University has added the final jewels to its crown of Malibu facilities: the Drescher Graduate Campus.*1

The 90,000-square-foot campus has become home to the Beckman Management Center, the Graduate Executive Center, and the Center for Learning and Technology. The Campus serves the Graziadio School, the Graduate School of Education and Psychology, and the School of Public Policy.

President Andrew Benton of Pepperdine University took the opportunity to give the Grduate Schools Board of visitors a sneak preview of the campus in last May. The president, along with Dean of the business school Dr. Linda Livingstone, hosted several special guests including David Mount, Mrs Reva Graziadio, who was accompanied by her daughter and son-in-law, Aliva and Stevan Calvillo.

In Addition, President Andrew Benton welcome former U. S. President Gerald Ford. "It is so right that he is here today, becuase when he serve on our Board of Regents we were envisioning this project," President Benton remarked.*2 President Ford understood what the completion of the Drescher Graduate School meant. More importanly he understood that the project reprents all that is good about a generation of people who continue to build a great America.

"I think our country should be proud of the fact that we proved that free enterprise, free election opportunities, free economic systems could prevail over state-run, governmen controlled nations," said President Ford.

"How can we leave the world in a better conditiion than we found it? Near the top of such answers is this: Build a teaching institution that is grounded in timeless truths. Or, as our mission statement expresses it, 'Pepperdine is a Christian unversity committed to the highest standards of academic excellence and Christian values, where students are strengthened for lives of purpose, service, and leadership.' That is a mission worth investing a life in," pointed out President Benton at his message on the "Pepperdine People".*3

A Message (concised) from President Dr. Andrew Benton of Pepperdine University
By Andrew K. Benton

Promise are important to our community. The promise we make today provide the foundation for the work we will do tomorrow. Faithfulness to our heritage ennobles and illuminates all that we do. I have not forgotten the pormise I made in my inaugural address as I took office in the year 2000.

"Pepperdine is a christian university committed to the highest standards of academic excellence and Christian values, where students are strenghtened for lives of purpose, service, and leadership." *2
