Officials say authority has succeeded in selling LV globally
By CHRIS JONES
GAMING WIRE

Efforts to promote Las Vegas to visitors far and wide have paid off in different and unusual ways, a local tourism leader said Tuesday.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority has for years touted this city abroad using a network of foreign offices in places such as London, Tokyo and Sydney, Australia.

With representatives of its seven overseas branches in town this week, the authority's international sales director used December's board meeting to highlight her team's successes.

Recent media coverage of French chefs at work on the Strip has increased French sales of food-themed travel packages to Las Vegas, Cam Usher said.

German travelers rate Las Vegas among their favorite U.S. destinations because they're so aware of the many nearby national parks.

Usher also credited McCarran International's popular Virgin Atlantic Airways service to an early 1990s meeting with Virgin boss Richard Branson. The meeting was arranged by the authority's London-based representatives.

Local international air service now includes 167 scheduled weekly flights, Usher added, up from 46 five years ago.

Las Vegas drew nearly 3.38 million foreign visitors last year, which accounted for 13 percent of local visitation.

The city hopes to draw 8.6 million foreigners annually by 2009, a goal that could be challenged by visa and passport restrictions, fluctuating currency exchanges and foreign sentiment toward the United States, Usher said.

An increasing number of foreign travelers are coming here to attend trade shows, and many will soon encounter a vastly different Las Vegas Convention Center.

Authority President Rossi Ralenkotter said Tuesday he'll give the board a three-hour presentation in February on the status of the center's proposed $450 million to $500 million renovation and expansion.

The meeting will address the center's projected impact on the city and convention authority's operations; its likely construction schedule and budget; and offer details of a bond sale required for financing, Ralenkotter said.

Authority leaders continue to seek feedback from the center's trade show organizers and frequent attendees, a process board member Chuck Bowling said must continue.

"It will not matter at the end of the day what this board feels" is best for the center, Bowling said. "The real matter is did we listen" to the desires of the building's customers.

Feedback so far, Ralenkotter said, suggests the most sought-after changes include improving and adding meeting room space to the 4-year-old South Hall; building a lobby to connect the North and South halls; and adding meeting rooms, public areas; parking and general session space to serve older portions of the 3.2 million-square-foot venue.

The board approved a $509,780 request to keep consultant MWH Americas at work on the improvements through Feb. 28.

In other business Tuesday, the convention authority board:

n Ratified a deal to keep the National Finals Rodeo at the Thomas & Mack Center through 2014. The authority will spend $1 million annually over 10 years to sponsor the event, which Ralenkotter on Tuesday called the cornerstone of the local travel industry in December.

The authority stands to recoup $600,000 annually by hosting the affiliated Cowboy Christmas gift show at the Las Vegas Convention Center. This year's rodeo, which concluded Sunday, was projected to lure 40,000 out-of-town guests and generate approximately $43 million in nongaming visitor spending.

n Approved a request to spend nearly $10.9 million to buy a 1.54-acre parcel at 454 Sierra Vista Drive. Legal Counsel Luke Puschnig said the site, which is adjacent to the Las Vegas Convention Center's South Hall, could provide parking or accommodate future expansion of the center.

The authority in July OK'd a $7.1 million purchase of an adjacent 1.42-acre parcel at 486 Sierra Vista Drive. And in September, the authority agreed to spend another $10.15 million for a 2.13-acre parcel located farther east at 750 Sierra Vista Drive.

Meet Lorraine Hunt, Honorary Chairperson of International Cities Business Council of WBTI
By Michael Douglas, Valerie Weber, Bill Young, and Tiffany Chang

The International Cities Business Council (ICBC) of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) strives to build a bridge among important cities nationally and internationally. ICBC has set the following goals: (1) Mutual cooperation and development of business, trade, and tourism; (2) Public relations among businesses and professionals; and (3) Social and dinner events within the community with a friendly atmosphere.

"As the Hononary Chairperson of International Cities Business Council of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI), I'll have more venues to work for international tourism with Nevada Governor Kenny Guinn who is the Chairman of the Advisory Board of WBTI. We're putting all our effort and wisdom to work for our people, land, and country under the spiritual leadership of Chairperson Elaine Chao of WBTI," said Lorraine Hunt, Lt. Governor of Nevada, on November 11, 2005.
(The above message was signed by Lt. Governor of Nevada Lorraine Hunt.)*1

Justice of the Supreme Court Michael Douglas, District Judge Jessie Walsh, Clark County Commissioner Lynette McDonald, Nevada Assemblywoman Valerie Weber, Clark County Sherriff Bill Young, business executives and owners, multimedia publishers and Editors-in-Chief, organizational and community leaders, and other VIPs co-sponsored the initial establishment of the Intercity Business Council of Nevada (also known as the "International Cities Business Council") of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) . The historical event took place on December 16, 2004 in Las Vegas, Nevada, U. S. A.

The Directors of the International Cities Business Council (ICBC) at the present time are: Honorable Han Zheng, Mayor of the City of Shanghai, China, Honorable Jim Gibson, Mayor of the City of Henderson, Nevada, Honorable Michael L. Montandon, Mayor of the City of North Las Vegas, Nevada, Dr. Stuart Mann, Dean of the William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration, University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV), Honorable Feng Wei Lai, County Governor of Penghu, Taiwan, Honorable Changping Zhang, Mayor of Xiamen, China, and the Honorable Tommy Hu, CEO (Mayor) of Xiang Fan, Hubei, China, CEO of United Commercial Bank, notably among others.

Lt. Governor of Nevada Lorraine Hunt was invited as the Honorary Chairperson of International Cities Business Council (ICBC) by President Dr. Tony Lei of WBTI. President Dr. Carol C. Harter of UNLV and Nevada Assemblywoman Valerie Weber were elected as Advisors.

Nevada Lieutenant Governor Lorraine T. Hunt was re-elected to her current office in the November 2002 General Election. She originally took office in January of 1999. As the lieutenant governor, Hunt is president of the Nevada State Senate, chair of the Nevada Commission on Tourism, chair of the Nevada Commission on Economic Development (which includes the Nevada Film Office) and vice-chair of the Nevada Department of Transportation board of directors. She also sits on the governors cabinet and serves as chief executive when the governor is unable to serve for any reason or is absent from the state.*2

Hunt is a member of the executive committee of the National Lieutenant Governors Association and serves as vice-chair of the National Republican Lieutenant Governors Association.

It was then that Hunt first demonstrated her entrepreneurial ability by making her first real estate investment in a piece of desert land on the outskirts of Las Vegas. Years later the investment led her into the world of business when she became president and chief executive officer of Perri, Inc., a real estate and restaurant management company.

She has represented the private sector by serving as vice-chair of the Nevada Commission on Tourism; a director and past president of the Nevada Restaurant Association; director, Nevada Hotel-Motel Association; and vice-chair, Nevada Motion Picture Commission and vice chair of the Nevada Motion Picture Foundation.

She began her governmental service with her election to the Clark county commission. She served a four-year term as commissioner and, during her tenure, also served as vice-chair. She also became the first woman to chair the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) since its inception.

Throughout the years Hunt has acquired extensive experience in business and was awarded Nevadas first Governors Award for Excellence in Business as well as being named Nevadas U.S. Small Business Advocate of the Year. Additional awards and honors include: Casino Legends Hall of Fame, 2001, Educator of the Year, Nevada Restaurant Assoc., 2000; Republican Woman of the Year, 1996; Free Enterprise Award, 1993; Governors Conference on Tourism - first Lifetime Achievement Award, 1993; Nevada Restaurateur of the Year, 1992; Nevada Small Business Advocate Award, Small Business Administration, 1989; and the first Governors Award for Excellence in Business, State of Nevada, 1987.

Hunt also participates extensively in community service, including having served on the St. Rose Dominican Hospital Community Board, as past president and trustee of St. Judes Ranch for Children, and as Vice-Chair of the Pan Pacific and Asian American Forum (PPAAF) of WBTI.*3

Representatives of Air China Cargo have informed Nevada leaders the carrier will use Reno-Tahoe International Airport as a diversion airport when bad weather prevents its scheduled cargo flights from landing in San Francisco, Lt. Gov. Lorraine Hunt said Thursday.

A letter from the airline also hinted that additional flights between Asia and Northern Nevada could be in store.

In recent years, Hunt has led three missions to China to encourage additional trade and tourism between China and Nevada.*4

Governor Kenny Guinn of Nevada reminds us that tourism is the bedrock of Nevada's economy. To expand and diversify our domestic and international markets are absolutely essential to our long-term economic growth and stability.*5

Governor Kenny Guinn and Lt. Govenor Lorraine Hunt said that Nevada's tourism industry must continue to expand its offerings and reach out to diverse markets that range from outdoor enthusiasts to residents of the world's most populous nation (China). Speaking at the general session of the Governor's Conference on Tourism at Caesars Palace, he and she each praised Nevada's continuing efforts to supplement its gaming-based core with non-gaming amenities such as shopping, dinning, and outdoor recreation.*6

"I can't overstate the significance of China's potential as a visitor market for Nevada," Lt. Governor Hunt said. "I found modern cities rife with elements of Western culture such as Starbucks Coffee, MTV, the Rat Pack-era music of Frank Sinatra, etc. Up to 10 percent of the country's approximately 1.4 billion residents can now afford to travel overseas, which has positioned China as Nevada's "newest and most-modern market" for tourism."

On May 18, 2000 Lt. Governor Lorriane Hunt of Nevada led a delegation from Nevada to Taipei of the Republic of China. "This is important to Nevada in areas beyond just our tourism industry. Taiwan enjoys a growing economy with considerable technological advancement and as such, they are one of the world's top 15 trading nations. And with Nevada's total exports exceeding one billion dollars in 1999 alone, our local businesses stand to benefit as the Taiwanese market continues to prosper and expand," Lt. Governor of Nevada Hunt pointed out in Taipei.*7

"The Nevada Commission on Tourism believes it is vital to establish a presence in Taiwan in order to represent our tourism destinations to this emerging world travel market. Taiwan's capital, Taipei, has a working population of four million, with a youthful, technologically oriented work force. There is tremendous potential for building tourism among this sector," said Hunt.*8

"Similar to the new direction of the government in Taiwan, we are seeking new horizons for the economy of Nevada. Building mutally beneficial relationships with Taiwan, and other foreign countries, will create the demand for direct, regularly scheduled flights. Our work will help Nevada establish contacts for lucrative business and convention visitors from around the world that will form the foundation for a new pillar in the Nevada economy."*9

CARSON CITY, Nev. Gov. Lorraine Hunt announced today.

Gov. Kenny Guinn has proclaimed May 21 Nevada Geocache Day to showcase the event, a friendly competition that will introduce many of the geocachers to rural Nevada. An NCOT staff member will participate as a rally official.

Geocaching is an ideal adventure activity for Nevada because the wide-open spaces and desert environment are well suited to searching for hidden treasure, Hunt, NCOT chair, said. Lt. Gov. Lorraine Hunt, who is seeking the Republican nomination for governor next year, issued a press release last week hyping news that Reno-Tahoe's airport was selected by Air China as a place to divert cargo flights if weather in San Francisco doesn't permit landings.

"This is exciting news and an important step in my efforts to bring direct airline flights between China and Nevada," the press release stated.

She's not the only state official putting their name in the public's mind.

Treasurer Brian Krolicki, who is running for lieutenant governor, is on television with a commercial encouraging parents to enroll in college savings programs through his office.

He even plays with a boy who's caught a frog.

Chinese officials ask Nevada farmers to help grow better alfalfa

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Chinese farmers have the cows they need to keep their customers happy, but don't have the feed to satisfy the cattle, so they are turning to Nevada's alfalfa farmers for help.

Officials of the provinces of Liaoning, Hebei and Shandong have asked the Nevada Commission on Economic Development to recruit a group of alfalfa farmers to come to China and grow better feed.

Al Di Stefano, director of global trade and investment at the commission, told the Nevada Appeal that China has been buying U.S. cows to supply the increasingly Westernizing diets of Chinese consumers, but lacks the ability to produce nutritious hay.

"They don't know how to grow alfalfa, where to grow it and they don't have the seeds, so they are saying, 'you guys come over and grow it,'" he said.

Di Stefano said the quality of dairy products from China has been poor because the country didn't have high-producing breeds of cows or the high-protein grain to feed them. The U.S. has perfected dairy cow breeding and diets, which Di Stefano said has only recently begun in China.

Lt. Gov. Lorraine Hunt has said that China represents a large market for Nevada products and tourism.

"Nevadans can profit from the Chinese customers who need to purchase our knowledge and our products," she said.

The commission approached several growers' associations looking for those who are interested. Di Stefano said he hopes to gather a group of about a dozen farmers to take to China. He is working on a grant to fund this trade mission.

The U.S. exports alfalfa to Japan, Korea and Taiwan. But he said the amount of alfalfa required to feed dairy cows in China would be too large to export.

"They've calculated it would take a quarter million acres of alfalfa to feed the current dairy industry in China," Di Stefano said.

Since foreigners can't own land in China, he said the easiest way for a farmer to get started would be to create a joint venture with a Chinese company that owns the land.

Boosting the number of tourists coming to Las Vegas from Asia
By JENNIFER ROBISON and Tiffany Chang

..........................
Andrew Lai, a managing partner in Dragon City, said he's met with state and local tourism officials to discuss boosting the number of tourists coming to Las Vegas from Asia.*1

"We could have 3 (million) to 5 million Chinese tourists coming to Las Vegas in three to five years," Lai said. "More than 50 million Chinese have enough money to come here. China has 1.4 billion people. If just 1 percent of them eventually come here, it would be 14 million visitors."

Hunt-Krygiell said Dragon City would create a significant demand for "services that cater to tourists," so a commercial-tourism designation would "make sense."

"We're going to have more tourism along the (Spring Mountain) corridor because we'll actually have places for them to stay," Hunt-Krygiell said. "It could increase a wider variety of tourism uses."*2 .......

Welome to Nevada
By Office of the Lt. Governor and PAI of WBTI*1

Welcome

From Lieutenant Governor of Nevada, U. S. A.
Lorraine T. Hunt*2

As I took my oath of office, I envisioned the future and saw exciting opportunities for our state. The State of Nevada has experienced tremendous growth over the last few years and the outlook for the future is it will continue. My duties as Lieutenant Governor include serving as chairman of both the Nevada Commission on Tourism and the Nevada Commission on Economic Development, which includes the Nevada Film Office, as well as serving as vice-chair of the state Board of Transportation and presiding over the senate as the President while the Nevada Legislature is in session.

I will continue to work diligently in promoting our state's largest industry - tourism. Nevada provides one of the most exciting destinations in the world with something for everyone. The bright lights of Las Vegas and Reno, the recreation activities at Lake Tahoe, the beautiful, spacious mountain and desert retreats, the skiing and golf resorts throughout the state as well as some of the best shopping and entertainment, provide a destination unparalleled in the world. A priority of this administration is to continue to provide jobs for our working Nevadans by keeping our hotel and motel rooms full. We have prospered for many years from this industry and must do all we can to secure its future. We have an excellent team in place and will continue to aggressively and creatively promote our state's urban and rural tourist destinations.

In addition, it is important now more than ever that we promote economic development in our state in order to augment our thriving gaming and tourism industries. Nevada offers one of the most attractive business environments, not only in the United States, but also in the world. The Commission on Economic Development plays a vital role in our efforts to attract new business opportunities. By diversifying our economy while maintaining the entrepreneurial, pioneer spirit that has made Nevada successful, we will ensure that our state continues its prosperity into the next century.

I am truly excited about the opportunity to serve as Nevada's Lieutenant Governor and look forward to the many challenges before us. I encourage you to contact our office should you have ideas you would like to share.

Thank you for visiting our web-site. If you are living out-of-state or out of the country, I invite you to visit our great state. If you reside in Nevada I would encourage you:

The next time you want to get out of town, visit Nevada!

Warmest Regards,

Lorraine T. Hunt
Lt. Governor of Nevada

She also sits on the governors cabinet and serves as chief executive when the governor is unable to serve for any reason or is absent from the state.

Hunt is a member of the executive committee of the National Lieutenant Governors Association and serves as vice-chair of the National Republican Lieutenant Governors Association.

She moved to Henderson, Nevada in 1943 with her parents from Niagara Falls, New York. She graduated Las Vegas High School and attended Westlake College of Music in Los Angeles, California. Hunt began her musical studies at the age of nine and embarked on her professional musical career at 19 when she started performing in Las Vegas, Reno and Lake Tahoe.

Hunt also used her business acumen as a small business advocate in community service, government, and legislative affairs.

Rose Dominican Hospital Community Board, and as past president and trustee of St. Judes Ranch for Children.
