Post through the courtesy of the "■天下雜誌 2006 / 03 / 07 (星期二)" of Yahoo.com: 如何增進管理智商? 5555555555555555 7777777777777777777777777777 888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888 **************************************************

Post through the courtesy of the "雜誌新聞>天下雜誌" of Yahoo.com: 孫運璿 永遠的領導人 ***友善列印 【楊艾俐】 [[[二十年,孫運璿雖然遠離政治,但是他帶領台灣走過艱困時代,經過時日的沉澱,更彌足珍貴,也深藏在人們心底。 777777777777777777 111111111111111111111111111 888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888 **************************************************

A paper published by the International Conference on Technology and Education inspired experience for the Implementation of Computer Education in Asian Public Schools By Tiffany ChangThe following is the main context of a papper by Dr. Tony T. Lei after his research of the implementation of computer education in U. S. public schools. The former paper on the computer education in U. S. public schools was published by the International Conference on Technology and Education for its ICTE New Orleans 1996 Conference: "To implemente computer education to public schools has been very interested by several Asian countries. In this era, there are three ingredients for a successful economy and business in the knowledge economy world: (1) continually advancng technology, (2) entrepreneurship, and (3) innovation. To learn and to imitate is one of the practical ways fo entrepreneurship. By following this philosophy, American experience and practice may play an important role to increase the possibility of success for the implementation of computer education in Asia. A study has tried to discuss several major pitfalls that have prevented planned changes in computer education from being successful. To cope with those obstacles, Agoura High School had a successful experience in implementing compute education. Research result revealed that the computer group surpassed the non-computer group in post-test mathematics scores after they were adjusted for initial differences in pre-test mathematics scores and for actual days of attendance. Microcomputes has been considered to be an effective tools for learning by Agoura High. The following pitfalls were the reasons why funds were ceased fo its ineffectiveness of the implementation of computer education though superficial success was reported by East Vermont Elementay School: (1) Ineffective Communication Teachers who were responsible for the implementation of the change were not informed adequately and fully. Institutional members wee mostly lacking clarity about the change that they were being requested to implement. More than half of the teachers influenced by the innovation did not have a clear image of the role play and work performance expected of them. (2) Lack of Developed Constituencies Before the implementing of the computer class, few effort was devoted to establish constituencies, neither it was there during the implementing. The high frequency of fail in efforts at change could in part be attibuted to the failure to see teacher as a constituency. (3) Ignorance of the Organizational Dynamics A review of the Vermont's story could let us know that one of the obstacles was that organizational conditions existing prior to and during the innovation's introduction were imcompatible with the innovation. Information were not provided by management in advance concerning the change, the need for it, and the way in which it would influence the people involved. (4) Lack of Effective Evaluation There was no formative evaluation before the implementation of the computer class program. Summative evaluation was also weak without the using of any proper achievement test. In short, there is no doubt for us to agree that pitfalls must be considered in implementing and sustaining changes in a public school." Dr. Tony Lei, President of Washington Business and Technology Institute, pointed out, "Computer education has been an urgent need for many schools in Asia. It is clever for us to learn entrepreneurship which has brought America the leading, prosperous, and advanced country in this world. Post through the courtesy of "今周刊" of Yahoo!

Post through the courtesy of the "香港副刊" of Worldjournal.com:千里馬妄想症 ●世有伯樂,然後有千里馬。

Post through the courtesy of the "30雜誌" of Yahoo! (A thing of beauty is a joy forever.)

010106-1187 "Business & Administration" (PPAA 19), ***** Sunday, 8:01 a. m., January 1, 2005 ***** WBTI President's 2006 New Year Message Whether you are man or woman, each of us have the instinct to travel. We live in this world for a good purpose, not "to have and to hold", but "to give and to serve others." We help others as if we need to continue to pay rent for our time here on earth. Those who "pay rent" by serving those in need of our assistance, are the individuals who are indeed most happy and at peace. Since being established on January 8, 1996, the distringuished officers and members of the Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) have persevered with a fiery spirit to serve its purpose in helping the community. We have endured and weathered many obstacles, and miraculously we have survived and grown into a strong organization. WBTI formulated and implemented several important projects in 2005. WBTI also assisted several associations and organizations in planning and conducting successful parties and events. This is evidenced by the more than 12 awards and proclamations received from the State of Nevada, Clark County, U. S. Senators and Congressmen and other high-ranking members of the community. Innovation is the key to success. Managers are constantly searching the globe for new ideas. Modern companies view information and technology (IT) as a major competitive differentiator. Strategic businesses emphasize the use of information technology for effective management. International companies develop their global IT platforms by integrating hardware, software and Internet-based network architecture worldwide. Commuunication technology, such as teleconferencing and computer networks, are making it possible for people from subsidiaries around the world to work together on a single project or multiple projects. Many business are becoming global and moving toward transnational e-business strategies in which they integrate the worldwide business activities between their subsidiaries and headquarters. In the coming year, 2006, WBTI will continue to monitor and promote further innovative activities in the international perspective arena. Washington Business and Technology Institute should be credited due to our remarkable leadership and our hardworking members. WBTI is neither made up of statues or fountains, nor landsacapes or waterscapes. Rather, WBTI is made up of actual hardworking and dedicated persons -- its faculty, advisory members, administrators and numerous friends and allies within the community. Many thanks to the Las Vegas Review-Journal for providing WBTI with a website so that we can continue to communicate easily and expeditiously. You're on Google.com and Google.cn, if you're on Washington Business and Technology Institute's website (http://communitylink.reviewjournal.com/lvrj/wbti)" [WBTI]. Google.com and Google.cn are published approximately every ten days for most of the sections of this website. For many years, one of WBTI's most important functions is to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of certain individuals. In 2005, we have had the pleasure to honor several individuals who have made outstanding accomplishments in many special fields. President Dr. Andrew K. Benton of Pepperdine University inspired us by the following: "Reaching up, reaching beyond, always pressing forward; this is the passion of the human spirit." We are certainly being challenged! At the beginging of this splendid year, I wish everybody success in their endeavors, prosperity, good health and a happy life! 122305-1187 #A third printing of the [*****PPAA18 ***** 3:36 p. m., Tuesday, August 17, 2004 #Second Edition]. Google's bidding! To become more effective online communication By Tiffany Chang ***** The leading Internet search engine Google increased more than 6 times of its profit in the third quarter. [October 21, 2005]*21 The following are post from the Second Edition of this article on August 17, 2004: "Google, the world's most-used Web search engine, may close bidding in its auction-style initial public offering as soon as 2 p.m. today, moving it closer to completing what may be the most biggest-ever internet-company IPO," reported Brett Cole on August 17, 2004.*19 "Google co-founders Larry Page, 31, and Sergey Brin, 30, chose an auction-style IPO to give individual investors an opportunity to buy shares alongsid institutions, the company said in SEC filings. Google's IPO auction may cut investment-banking fees to 1.5 percent, said Michael Madden, principal at New York-based buyout firm Questor Management Co. Google makes most of its money by linking advertisements to search results. That and other forms of advertising constitute 98 percent of Google's revenue, the company said in an SEC filling," continued the reporter.*20 *****To be more successful for your Web site, you need to be favored by the most famous search engine services leaders like Google! (google.com and Google.cn), Yahoo! (www.yahoo.com), Aol! (www.aol.com), WebCrawler! (WebCrawler.com) Infoseek! (www.infoseek.com), among others.***** "We need individuals who can restore hope and create positive changes in our society. It is our responsibility as educator to produce leaders who will take that initiative. To do so, we must be at the level of the individual student and alumnus. Utimately, the school must strengthen the student's intellect and create a better, bolder, and more ehical thinker who will yield the greatest impact on the community in roles as educators therapists, and business persons," siad Nancy Magnusson Fagan at the time when she was the Dean of the Graduate School of Education and Psychology, Pepperdine University.*1 Today, one of the important slogan of the Graduate School of Business and Public Administration (GSBPA) of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) is: To become more effective online communication in every online venue! Starting from 1980, the author (with the pen name as Tiffany Chang) had been benefited deeply from two main courses of the program of Doctorate Degree of Education (Ed. D.) in Institution Management of Pepperdine University.*2 They were: (1) ED 740 Computer Utilization in Institutional Management; and (2) ED 730 Methodological Approaches to Educational Research and Evaluation. The technical skills and knowledge of information management had sharpened his abilities of the research, management, and teaching in a national organization of information management and the graduate school of business administration. After many years of administrative resposibility in higher policy-making organization and teaching the graduate school of business administration in famous universities, the author concentrated effort to study and acquire the knowledge and utilization of effective information management in the United States of America. That was ten years after he received his M. B. A. from Pepperdine. His two years of computer consulting job at the Computer Laboratory of the Graduate School of Education and Pshchology and the School of Business and Management of Pepperdine University advanced the practical experience on information management for him to complete his dessertation entitled "A Study of the Impact of Enrollment in a Computer Science Class on Mathematics Scores and Attendance in a Secondary School". He taught information management as an Associate Professor for five years at the Graduate School of Business Administration of National Chunghsing University before he became a Fellow of Management for the former Dean of the School of Business and Management of Pepperdine University in 1991. He received his M. B. A. and Doctor of Education in Institutional Management from Pepperdine University in 1969 and 1990, respectively. Indeed, business achievement is the new yardstick of success in today's society. Therefore, business has become not only the fastest growing major in undergraduate institutions but also in graduate school of famous universities, nationally and internationally. The emphasis of the online communication skills and the quantitative analysis techniques with computers is one of the most important study for the art of success to the business students, professionals, executives, and owners. In many ways, business school is at the center of this cultural phenomenon. For some, the business school is the passport to the boardroom, the ticket to the top of the corporate ladder. these schools, nationally and internationally, pump out the new generation of business leaders by hundreds of thousands. "They are the pipeline of raw material with which the nation's --- and the world's --- leading business build the future. And MBAs are not limited to the traditional corporate world: From Wall Street to Madison Avenue, from Sand Hill Road to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, today's MBAs lead organizations large and small, in every conceivable industry. They are the executives and entrepreneurs who power the economy."3 "UNLESS YOU'VE BEEN LIVING IN A CAVE, you've seen enormous changes in communications technology over the past two decades. From orbiting satellites routing long distance phone calls to email to undreamed-of growth of the Internet, the age of communicating online, using computers and networks, is upon us all," stated at the first paragraphy of the 'Introduction' of the book, "How to say it online: everything you need to know to master the new language of cyberspac," written by Kim Baker and Sunny Baker.*4 "And what could be better news? To keep in touch, there's nothing faster or cheaper than email. To gain access to information and people, the power of online communication expands your reach from the local to the global. To meet new friends and even romance a potential life partner, online venues provide rich opportunities (if you know the right things to say and the best way to say them). At school, the Internet places volumes of knowledge on ever subject at your fingertips, and at work, computer networks make business communication more efficient than ever." *5 Whether you are in business or in non-profit organization, you need to have a Web site. This seems to be a common wisdom in now- a-days. Think seriously about the needs of your market before you go onto the Web to make more money for business, to develop better non-profit organization, or to contribute to more community service. "It's hard to believe that Fred's Service Station really needs a Web Site to reap new profits. However, for some businesses and professional service firms, the Internet and web to gether offer viable marketing and distribution opportunities. Software companies, online magazines, and email order businesses can do quite well from the Web --- if the owners know how to say the right things on their sites. The Secrets of a Successful Web Site: Just having a site on the Web will do almost nothing to sell your products or services. To promote your Web site, there are three things you must do: (1). You must register your Web site with the best search engines. (2). You should consider using the many free and not free advertising opportunities on the Web. (3) You should search the Web regularly for competitive and related sites, where you can attach a link to your site." *5 To be more successful for your Web site, you need to be favored by the most famous search engine services like Google! (google.com), Yahoo! (www.yahoo.com), Aol! (www.aol.com), Infoseek! (www.infoseek.com), among others. "There is no longer any such thing as a purely national economy. The rest of the world is just too big to ignore, either as a market or as a competitor. If business schools do nothing other than to train their students to think internationally, they would have accomplished an important task," said John Young, CEO, Hewlett-Packard.*7 Innovation is the key to success, managers are looking everywhere in the global organization for new ideas. Modern companies would view Information technology (IT) as a major competitive differentiator. Strategic businesses emphazise the ueses of information technology for management. International companies develop their global IT platforms by integrating worldwide hardware, software, and Internet-based network architecture. Commuunication technology, for example the teleconferencing and computer networks, is making it possible for people from subsidiaries around the world to work together on project. Many business are becoming global companies and moving toward transnational e-business strategies in which they integrate the global business activities of their subsidiaries and headquarters. The international dimemsions of managing global e-business technologies include dealing with cultural, political, and geoeconomic challenges posed by various countries for global marketplace. The e-business technologies are changing the distribution, relatonships, resources, and responsibilities of managers. Information Technology is helping managers of e-business to eliminate layers of amangement, enabling more collaborative forms of management, providing them with significant information technology resources, and confront them with major e-business and e-commerce challenge. Innovation is the key to success, managers are looking everywhere in the global organization for new ideas. Modern companies would view Information technology (IT) as a major competitive differentiator. Strategic businesses emphazise the ueses of information technology for management. International companies develop their global IT platforms by integrating worldwide hardware, software, and Internet-based network architecture. Commuunication technology, for example the teleconferencing and computer networks, is making it possible for people from subsidiaries around the world to work together on project.*8 In order to keep the online universe a productive, safe, communicative environment, it is interesting and worth to post the ten commandments for computer ethics. They were created by the Computer Ethics Institute: (1). Thou shalt not use a computer to harm other people. (2). Thou shalt not interfere with other people's computer work. (3). Thou shalt not snoop around in other people's files. (4). Thou shalt not use a computer to steal. (5). Thou shalt not use a computer to bear false witness. (6). Thou shalt not use or copy softwear for which you have not paid. (7). Thou shalt not use other people's computer resources without authorization. (8). Thou shalt not appropriate other people's intellectual output. (9). Thou shalt think about the social consequences of the program you write. (10). Thou shalt use a computer in ways that show consideration and respect. A sucessful businessperson always know the old rule that says "It's easier to keep an existing customer than to find a new one." In online customer relationships, this rule is just as important. Your goal should not only to get new visitors, but to cultivate your customer base to yield repeat sales, services, and referrals from satisfied purchasers, clients, and patronagers. "Besides a good product or service, there are only three things you need for successful online customer relations: strong communication, common courtesy, and exemplary customer service. Unfortunately, these old-fashioned values are often missing in many companies' online promotional communication." *9 President Andrew Benton of Pepperdine University took the opportunity to give the Grduate Schools Board of visitors a sneak preview of the campus in last May. The president, along with Dean of the business school Dr. Linda Livingstone, hosted several special guests including David Mount, Mrs. Reva Graziadio, who was accompanied by her daughter and son-in-law, Aliva and Stevan Calvillo. In Addition, President Andrew Benton welcome former U. S. President Gerald Ford. "It is so right that he is here today, becuase when he serve on our Board of Regents we were envisioning this project," President Benton remarked.*2 President Ford understood what the completion of the Drescher Graduate School meant. More importanly he understood that the project reprents all that is good about a generation of people who continue to build a great America. "I think our country should be proud of the fact that we proved that free enterprise, free election opportunities, free economic systems could prevail over state-run, governmen controlled nations," said President Ford. "How can we leave the world in a better conditiion than we found it? Near the top of such answers is this: Build a teaching institution that is grounded in timeless truths. Or, as our mission statement expresses it, 'Pepperdine is a Christian unversity committed to the highest standards of academic excellence and Christian values, where students are strengthened for lives of purpose, service, and leadership.' That is a mission worth investing a life in," pointed out President Benton at his message on the "Pepperdine People".*10 To encourage a good writing and to inspire a good idea, we must have good readers and sincere friends!*11 One of the examples has been shown at the bottom paragraphs of this feature article. "People worry about the huge amount of creativity that is wasted---lost forever---because talented people are prevented from giving their best by their lack of ability to influence others effectively," wrote Dr. Ken Blanchard in the 'Foreword' of the book entitled "Winning Ways," written by Dick Lyles.*12 "The business world has changed; organizations are getting flatter and more networked. Today, the key to success is one's ability to exercise peer leadership. The most successful individuals shine because of their ability to influence, empower, and energize others. In essence, they embody the principles and practices of Winning Ways." "Rapid changes in technology and global competition have combined to reshape the corporate landscape. Corporate management has responnded to these changes by iniatating sweeping changes. The introduction of new technology may be touted as a productivity booster and turn out instead to be a total bust. Whatever the problem may be, you're the one who has to deal with it on a daily basis. Even when new ideas are well thought out, there are still problems in putting them into practice within your group," George Fuller wrote in the 'Introduction' of his book, "Win/win management: leading people in the new workplace."*13 There are lots of common headaches most of supervisors and leaders have to confront. "It's easy to understand how the broad scope these problems can easily lead to a less than steller attitude toward your job. However, adoping a sense of futility only serve to make matters worse. On the other hand, maintain a positive attitude helps you place things in perspective and can make coping eith problems a lot easier to do."*14 To initiate our programs more effectively for the people and communities who are interested to participate the programs, we need to emphasize the spirit of positive attitude and positive thinking. The following are our golden words of wisdom which are worth reading collected by the Graduate School of Business and Public Administration (GSBPA) of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI): ***"Few things help an individual more than to place responsibility upon him and to let him know that you trust him." --- Booker T. Looking forward to meeting you someday so we could all working together toward that goal. With my very best to you,"*16 wrote Dr. Peter Wang to Dr. and Mrs. Tony Lei. Dr. Peter C. Wang, is the Regent of Pacific Lutheran University and Chairman of the Wang Center LLC. "Tony, As you requested, I am sending Peter's proposal for your review. Peter's proposal reflects his dream(and mine too) of many years. If successfully executed, it could help educate hundreds of millions kids of K-12 as well as adults. It would benefit THE MANKIND greatly. Read it and think what you can help," wrote Dr. Bob Ni.*17 He and Dr. Wang are all alumni of the first class of Tunghai University. "My Dearest Dr. Tony, What a wonderful and thoughtful suprise I opened the envelope and your most gracious offer to us inside. Trecia is travelling in New York and I'm still in LA here working. So we will be unable to accept your gift (A trip to visit Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, and National Parks by WBTI). However we shall treasure in our hearts your constant rememberance of us. Time goes quickly and people forget each other. You have been so very successful and I keep all your news articles. You look so handsome. You are getting younger. My dear friend Dr. Tony, I and Trecia thank you again and we value and keep safe our friendship. Our friendship love and thanks. Liz and Trecia," wrote Dr. Liz Kent a letter with a beautiful thanks card by "Today I Thought of You" to him. Liz and Trecia are sisters and former classmates of Dr. Tony Lei in the Doctorate Program of Institutional Management at Pepperdine University. All of the three good friends received their Doctor of Education degree in Institutional Management from Pepperdine University.*18 ---------------------------- References *1. Pepperdine University. A sound corporate philosophy and mission By Tiffany Chang and PAI of WBTI*1We are impressed by what Dr. Peter Drucker said that, "Only a clear definition of the mission and purpose of the business makes possible clear and realistic business objectives. It is the foundation for priorities, strategies, plans, and work assignments. It is the starting point for the design of managerial jobs, above all, for the design of managerial structures." A business is a reflection of the leader. As a manager, the important thing is not happens when you are not there. It is important of what happens when you are not there. We are pleased to quote the following three short but meaningful ones: ***** The ultimate responsibility of a leader is to facilitate other people's development as well as his own. ---Fred Pryor ***** American business needs a lifting purpose greater than the struggle of materialism. ---Herbert Hoover ***** The ultimate responsibility of a leader is to faciliate other people's development as well as his own. ---Fred Pryor ***** If you don't invest very much, then defeat dosen't hurt very much and winning is not exciting. ---Dick Vermeil It's our pleasure to post a short story from "Speaker's Source Book II" by Glenn Van Ekeren: The ServiceMaster Corporration serves as a beautiful example of a company that thoroughly integrates its corporate philosophy and mission into day-to-day affairs. Founded by Marion E. Wade, the story of its conception, genesis and growth is told in Wade's book, God is Counsel. Kenneth T. Wessner, Chairman of the Board of ServiceMaster, states: "The philosopgy of a company determines the character and nature of business it conducts. The climate of a company is created by the concepts of managing and life that govern its policies and practices. The philosophy of ServiceMaster and the words we used to express that philosophy have been carefully conceived, nurtured, and refined through years of thought, work, and commitment. Our company philosophy is expressed in four objectives. These four staterment are the foundation upon which everything we do is built. To honor God in all we do. To help people develop. To pursue excellence. To grow profitably. For the people of ServiceMaster, their work is not merely the making of a living; it is a way of life." That solid philosophy has helped ServiceMaster become one of the largest cleaning service conglomerates in the world. ------------------------------------- References *1. To serve, we need only a heart full of grace and a soul generated by love By Tiffany Chang and PAI of WBTI*1It is obvious that man or woman is himself or herself a traveler. The good purpose for mankind in this world is not "to have and to hold" but "to give and serve." The service that we render to other people is really like the rent we pay for our room on this earth. We are sure that the people who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve. We are pleased to quote the following three short but meaningful ones: ***** From now on, any definition of a successful life must include serving others. ---George Bush ***** When people are serving, life is no longer meaningless. ---John Gardner ***** One need not be a servant to be able to serve. ---Victor Frankl*2 It's our pleasure to post a short story from "Speaker's Source Book II" by Glenn Van Ekeren: Twenty-five centuries ago, Lao-tse, a Chinese sage, offered this profound insight; "The reason why rivers and seas receives the homage of a hundred mountain streams is that they keep below them. Thus they are able to reign over all the mountain streams. So the sage, wishing to be above men, putteth himself below them; wishing to be before them, he putteth himself behind them. Thus, though his place be above men, they do not feel his weight; though his place be before them, they do not count it an injury." So it is with humankind. Those who wish to yield the greatest influence will unselfishly position themselves below others, so as to serve them better. Bruce Barton told a parable two seas in Palestine that expounds on the wisdom of Lao-tse. One sea is flesh. Fish live in it. Trees and bushes grow near it. Children splash and paly in it. The river Jordan flows into this sea with sparkling water from the hills. People build their homes near it. Every kind of life is happier because it is there. The same river Jordan flows south into another sea. Here there are no fish, no green things, no children playing, no homes a building. Stale air hangs above its waters, and neither man nor beast will drink of it. What makes the difference between these neighbor seas? Not the Jordan River. It empties the same good water into both. Nor is the soil or the countryside. The differnece is that the Sea of Galilee receives water but does not keep it. For every drop that flows in, another drop flows out. The giving and receiving go on in equal measure. The other sea hoards its income. Every drop it gets it keeps. The Sea of Galilee lives and lives. The other sea gives nothing. It is called the Dead Sea. There are also two kinds of people in this world---those Dead Sea people who take without giving back, and the givers who remain fresh and vibrant by freely sharing of themselves. ------------------------------------- References *1. 120205-1187 "Business & Administration" (PPAA 19), ***** Friday, 10:37 a. m., December 2, 2005 #Second printing of the Second Edition on January 25, 2005 *****To build a world in the knowledge of business and economics By Cheryl Moss and Tiffany Chang*1 Eric Chen, Esq., is also a many years experienced Taiwanese merchant in China. His idea is to inspire some people to build a world in the knowledge of business and economics for China like what Dr. Charles H. C. Kao did for Taiwan. Dr. Charles Kao (崅婓嬒 愭惗 Founder, Global Views Monthly) is former Professor & Chairman and now Honorary Professor of University of Wisconsin. "I couldn't catch up Dr. Tony Lei's dinner party at his home in Jing Ning Mansion, but I'll have coffee hour with him and others professors eventually in the party," said Dr. Kao in Taipei early in the morning one day many years ago. Inspired by Dr. Tony Lei's many publications in business management demonstrated on the Wine Closet in the parlor, Dr. Charles Kao applaused, "Do it brightly and we may make the same excellency also. I'm interested in following Tony's creativeness to pioneer even a bigger economics and business world here soon after I come back from United States."*2 Within ten years, he established the Empire of "Tien Shia" ["The World"(The Lord) in Chinese] {Global Views Monthly} in Taiwan! His popularity and influence to the people in Taiwan have been offered him accomplishment much more than just his splendid academic title. It is our pleasure to post "KAOS announce major gift to UW-River Falls," which was a news delivered by University of Wisconsin -River Falls: Dr. Charles H.C. Kao and Mrs. Anne Kao have made a leader- ship pledge of $50,000 over the next five years to be used toward the accomplishment of the University's "Reach for the Future" major gifts campaign. In announcing their gift, Dr. Kao indicated it was their wish to support three important areas of the University: faculty development, Academic Excellence Higher Education Education Scholarships, and exchange programs with Greater China. Dr. and Mrs. Kao have been generous supporters of international programs for many years. Most recently, they were instrumental in the establishment of the Center for Pacific Rim Studies. The Center is responsible for providing opportunities for visiting professors and artists from Asia to visit the UW-River Falls campus and promoting educational exchanges between the two cultures. A portion of their gift will be used to underwrite faculty development opportunities and scholarships in the College of Arts &Sciences. Elected as the Distinguished Professor of the Year in 1974, Dr. Kao was the chair of the department of economics from 1971-80. Since then he has devoted part of his time in Greater China (China, Taiwan, Hong Kong) involved in research, lecturing, writing and publishing. Known as a "leading thinker" in Greater China, Dr. Kao has written more than 15 books in Chinese in his field of economic policy and social thought. Two of his books were given the national prize in Taiwan. In addition to his academic activity, he has also been serving as an economic advisor to the central government there. Mrs. Kao had a successful 25-year career with 3M Company and is currently working for IBM in Beijing as a computer systems consultant. She is very interested in international programs and cultural exchange in the arts.*3 Dr. Tony Lei transferred the education of BBA and MBA in the United States of America to Taiwan. The intellectuals who joined him were many professors, scholars, administrators, publishers, among others. All of them together, for many years, helped bring the Miracle of Economy of Taiwan realized. "Together with the successful experience of economic deveopment in Taiwan, now is the time for China to advance it even better!" said Eric Chen. -------------------------------------------- References *1. Designed nicely, the Malibu campus of Pepperdine has frequently been described as the most beautiful one in the world. Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) was created as an inspirational medium for academic research and community service under the affirmation and creed of Pepperdine University.*1 "Our greatest credit at Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) is our people -- not facades or fountains, not landsacapes or lakescapes, but people -- faculty, advisory members, administration, and a host of friends," says President Dr. Tony Lei. Thank you for this honor and the wonderful dinner celebration." Natalie is now a Justice of the Peace of the Clark County Justice Court. Community participation is an asset for enhancing public service. True leadership comes from knowing when one needs to depend on other's knowledge. Leaders are individuals who help people understand their motivations for doing things. They set the direction and understand why the direction is important. Dr. Tony Lei believes that in education leadership is a call to help others. He has the quality that inspires people to do what needs to be done and to feel good about doing it. Balanced with his outstanding academic expertise, he is a servant of God for community service, sincere and humble but not weak.*3 By loving, we are enriched. Love in action is service above self. Make service a part of character and experience the abundant reward that comes from serving others. Let us fan the flame of service in ever-increasing circles. With this, we can envision a community that is safe, peaceful, and healthy. District Judge of the Family Court Cheryl Moss said that, "I've remained dedicated to serving the community, and I've been inspired by the leadership, wisdom, and guidance of WBTI's Prsident Dr. Tony Lei. "A good leader should acquire the ability of and execute the following seven management functions: 1. Planning: to plan important task project of this unit; 2. Organizing; to master the organoizational system of this unit; 3. Staffing: to recruit the appropriate staff members; 4. Directing: to direct the people on the staff of this unit; 5. Coodinating: to coordinate the benefits and conflicts of this unit in order to attain sound cooperation; 6. "There are three models of leadership that a good leader, especially the leader of an association, may emphasize: A. Creative Leadership: The leader takes the most importance of holding the great principles to develop the future endeavor of this unit. (1) Sense of Mission -- to make the members not work as a job but high degree of the "concept of value"; (2) Foresightness -- to develop the future blueprint for this unit; (3) Teamwork Spirit -- to motivate the cooperation and success of the whole group; (4) Orientation by Objectives -- to encourage all the members unit put full effort on its clear and definite objectives," continues Dr. Tony Lei. "B. Humanity Leadership: the leader emphasizes the importance of his or her relationship with the abordinates. He or she motivates their work morality and spirit. Therefore, he or she should understand, emphasize, and hold of humanity in order to promote everyone's potentiality to endeavor for this unit. The key points are: 1. Trust; 2. Delegation of authority; 3. The Second Chance Theory (to pardon your subordinate); 4. Encouragement; 5. Help and Care; 6. Support and Assistance; 7. Training and Education. "C. Democratic Leadership: The leader respects humanity and allows individual development to make his or her group members cooperate and work by division of labor with self-motion and self-revelation. Its specialties are: 1. The leader endeavors to win followers by himself or herself with good personality and emphasizes knowledge and experience as the foundation of leading. 2. Subordinates have a full opportunity to participate decisionmaking and to suggest good idea. 3. The leader puts attention to the benefit of the subordinates, understand their needs, focuses the importance of the people. 4. The leader gives only some direction on the work planning, and leave the details of the work processing to the subordinates. 5. The leader has full opportunity to participate in employees activities, and they get along with each other very well. 6. The communication between the leader and subordinates is fully in good condition, and they enjoy fruitful accomplishment with good understanding. 7. The division of labor is decided by the group and the subordinates have the right selecting their work accompanists with the direction and coordination of their leader by their side. 8. The leader evaluates the performance of his or her subordinates objectively and renders fair judgement in giving prize or punishment." "In practically, the effectiveness of the above leadership can be attained by its flexible application in accordance with the right time, place, matter, people, and objective situation, " Dr. Tony Lei points out.*4 "In righteousness you will be established."*5 "In this 21th Century new era and society, we need economic growth, but we also need to establish and promote creativity, fairness and justice, serve and love, educational knowledge, and spirit engineering. We wish that a pure spring may prosper and enrich our splendid and golden country through: the power of public service that based on 'knowledge is the power of righteouness,'; the advancement of technology, entreneurship, and innovation; and the spirit that 'knowledge calls, ultimately, for a life of service'," says Dr. Tony Lei. It is truly an honor to be a part of this organization, as it plays an important role in identifying, researching, and addressing the issues facing our community. Modern Stratagem By Tiffany ChangThe Chairrman of Chinese American Academic Association of Nevada, Dr.Tony Lei, received by air mail on February 22, 1997 a book named "Modern Stratagem" *1 The book was written and sent by Professor Tu Lin. The late Tu Lin, one of the famous scholar on stratagem, had been many years Professor and Chairman of Safety Department of the Central Police Official University in Taiwan. They were also good friends for many years. Professor Tu was the Founder and Chairman od Taipei Marketing Research Association on a national basis. He was also Chairman of Board of China File and Micrographic Information Management Institute. In order to promote the collaboration of academy between both sides of China on the pacific ocean, Professor Tu was the Chairman and held the 1966 Seminar on File and Micrographic Academy of both sides of the Straits of Taiwan on November 4-11, 1996. The book was prefaced by Dr. Ko-wang Mei, the former President of Tunghai University and now the President of Taiwan Regional Development Institute. In the preface, Dr. Mei pointed out that: It is the person who uses strategem to face poblem and chellenge and to integrate a project or principle for processing of problem solving. Most of famous stratagems in the human history were used on politics and military. From its broad significance, in order for a person to successful both in production and human relations, he or she needs stratagem to attain his or her objectives. The Chinese idiom of "Action after taking stratagem" may show the good understanding of the above meaning. "It is 'political strategy' when a stratagem is used in political affairs. It is 'war strategy' when a stratagem is used in military action. It is 'individual strategy' when a stratagem is used by personal affairs. It is 'business strategy' when a stratagem is used by business management. After the second half of 20 century, business management played a very important role around the world. The study of management emphasizes very much the importance of stratagem. Therefore, the world business is now full of the actions of 'Business Stratagem'," said Dr. Mei. Dr. Mei believed that: The successful degree of a stratagem can not be depended only on individual's wisdom, knowledge, and experience. It has its team works, integrity, scientific background, and philosophic thought. Therefore, there never appears a stratagem in an emptiness. It needs deliberate planning and logic thinking. The large the area of stratagem and the deeper of the degree of a stratagem, the large and deeper the need for information collection and analysis. In the recent half of the century, it is one of the most important subject in 'The study of Administration'. In a practical and general speaking, 'stratagem' is 'decision making' in a promotional sense. In order to have a stratagem effective, efficient, and perfect, the conclusion of a stratagem should be attained through scientific collection, analysis, judgment, study of information. It is why the 'Stratagem' is an important and useful study. Dr. Mei recommended that : The "Modern Stratagem" written by Professor Tu Lin is one of the best in the field. It can be a good reference text for persons in political affairs. It is a fine dictionary for military experts. And it can be also effectively used in business management. Finally, it is a very valuable book for an individual to use it as an electric power to brighten his or her career both in production and human relations.*2 --------------------------------------------- References *1. Post through the "雜誌新聞>數位時代" of Yahoo.com:The following is a report written by 張殿文. 55555555555555 666666666666666666666666 888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888 ****************************************************

102705-6187 "Business & Administration" (PPAA 19), ***** Thursday, 2:37 p. m., October 27, 2005 #Second priting of the First Edition on February 29, 2005 *****"How to Treat People" and "Effective Communication" are important! By Tiffany Chang There are five lessons of "How to Treat People." The second Important Lesson of them is 'Pickup in the Rain' as in the following: An American woman was standing on the side of an Alabama highway trying to endure a lashing rainstorm. Her car had broken down and she desperately needed a ride. Soaking wet, she decided to flag down the next car. A young white man stoppped to help her, generally unhear of in those conflict-filled 1960s. The man took her to safety, helped her get assistance and put her into a taxicab. She seemed to be in a big hurry, but wrote down his address and thanked him. Seven days went by and a knock came on the man's door. To his surprise, a giant console color TV was delivered to his home. A special note was attached. It read: "Thank you so much for assisting me on the highway and unselfishly serving others." Sincerely, Mrs. Nat King Cole.*1 NOW more than ever - Peace It On....Pay It Forward. The best thing we can learn from children is that they known no limits nor boundaries. Their dreams and imaginations are the cornerstone of inspiration and what can be, not what is.*2 Think about the people you know. Which of them would you call successful communicators? What do these people have in common? The individuals on your list probably share five qualities. Effective communication requires perception, precision, credibility, control, and eongeniality:*3 (1). Perception. They are able to predict how their message will be received. They anticipate your reaction and shape the message according. They read your response correctly and constantly adjust to correct any misunderstanding. (2). Precision. They create a "meeting of the minds." When they finish expressing themselves, you share the same mental picture. (3). Credibility. They are believable. You have faith in the substance of their message. You trust their information and their intentions. (4). Control. They shape your response. Depending on their purpose, they can make you laugh or cry, calm down, change your mind, or take action. (5). Congeniality. They maintain friendly, pleasant, relations with the audince. Regardless of whether you agree with them, good communicators command your respect and goodwill. You are willing to work with them again, despite your differences. The good words from the "Bible" are always inspired:*4 Jesus said, "I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown." -- Revelation 3:11 "Bible" The tongue of the righteous is the choice silver. -- Proverbs 10:20 "Bible" The tongue of the wise commends knowledge. -- Proverbs 15:2 "Bible" When you walk into your first job as an MBA, all eyes will be on you. There are thirty-seven secrets to brandishing the confidence, wisdom, and polish of someone who has worked at a firm three years --- even when you have only been there just a few weeks. The following is the 'Seven communication laws you better not break,' written by Jon Housman:*5 1. Know what you don't know. "When smart young people start a job, they want to impress you. So they talk a lot," says Scott Koppelman, a senior financial adviser at First Union Securities Financial Network in New York. "But actually, that's perceived as a negative. I'm looking for someone who's aggressive but who knows when to listen." Rule of thumb: Listen four times more than you talk. 2. Treat your boss as if he were a client. 3. E-mail is not a crutch, a wall to hide behind, or any other metaphor, for that matter. It should never be a substitute for dealing with a problem in person, says Cella Irvine, a Harvard MBA and former senior manager at an Internet company. By addressing the first rift that comes along face-to-face rather than from your PDA, you'll immediately establish yourself as someone who doesn't shy away from situations and has good interpersonal skills. Bothered by an assistant's sloppiness? An associate's wisecrack? Tell them politely and forthrightly. Using your mouth. Otherwise, you'll be pegged as an e-mail coward. 4. Don't talk business in the bathroom. It puts people in the awkward spot of having to agree with you because they don't want to prolong the conversation. Managers tend to resent being put in an awkward spot. They're funny like that. 5. When your boss calls you at home on a Saturday, speak as if you were sitting at your desk. Do not mention that you're taking something out of the oven or that the delivery guy is at the door. 6. From a third-year associate at a bulge-bracket investment bank:"My firm has an open-door policy, which is great. But always pause for a moment before asking a senior person a question to make sure it's not something a peer could answer. A new hire who was junior to me once went straight to the director with a question I could have answered easily. He made us both look stupid." 6. You're working with your boss on a project, and he's plumb wrong about something. "You have to tell him when no one else is around," says Jana Carlson, a professional recruiter at the Blackstore Group in New York." I think this number might be off. Do you want me to double-check it? Pose it as a question, not as "You're wrong." Of course, you'd better be very sure he's wrong." Five of the quatations by Russell Wild are valuable to put them here:*6 A. Prove Your Point I know my students won't remember every formula. but I want them to remember this: There is no substitute for being able to convince people that your ideas are right, that your ideas are better. How do you do this? Part of it is knowing how to listen to people, part of it is knowing how to treat your peers well. --- Bhaskaran Swaminathan B. Outsmart the Computer A student may be able to get an A in the classroom by memorizing a formula, but if he wants to succeed in business, he has to know why the equation works and when it can be applied. If a student's knowledge of a theory doesn't move from the abstract to the concrete, it's worthless. For instance, when a client asks a portfolio manager why he's buying certain stocks, the manager's got to have something tangible to back it up. Saying"Our computer models are showing that this stock is underperforming" simply isn't good enough. __ Gib Bassett C. Know Thy Customer This is the bottom line: Customer fuel the business___any business. A deep understanding of the customer is critical in any marketplace. Who are the customers? Why will they buy? How will they evaluate the product? This sounds simple in practice, but very few business do it well. ___ Barbara Bund D. Give the People What They Want I can't stress this enough: People don't products or service. They buy solutions to painful problems. If your customer has a headache, sell aspirin, not vitamin. ___ John N. Doggett E. Make Strong Connections In today's quickly changing business environment, digital organizations require leaders who connect people to the company and to one another. In the accelerated and condensed digital environment, leaders who can build strong relationships with a variety of people are the ones who will thrive. ___ Celia Virginia Harquait ------------------------------- We all need to smile every once in a while!*7 Ever Wonder! ***Why is "abbreviated" such a long word? ***Why are they called apartment when they are all stuck together? ***Why don't sheep shrink when it rains? ***Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavor, and dishwashing liquid is made with real lemons? ***Why is the man who invests all your money called a broker? ***If flying is so safe, why do they call the airport the terminal? ***Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour? ***If con is the opposite of pro, is Congress the opposite of progress? ***Why is it that to stop Windows 98, you have to click on "Start"? ------------------------------ References *1. Innovative marketing for business By Tiffany Chang and PAI of WBTI*1Innovation is practical for a real need. It is not a random process. "When it works, it works because someone has identified a real need, and found a way to bring new ideas or new technologies to bear on that need," said Lewis W. Lehr. An innovator's life is governed by "to create" lists. She or he is incessantly pursuing new possibilities and refinning existing ones. We are pleased to quote the following three short but meaningful ones: ***** Make a technical contribution, innovate, don't emulate. ---David Packard ***** any business that does not learn how to innovate within the next few years will not be around by the year 2000. ---Peter F. Drucker ***** Innovation has to be linked to a market-driven mentality, tied in with customer needs. It can't be done in a vacuum, or as innovation for its own sake. ---Jim Beard*2 It's our pleasure to post a short story from "Speaker's Source Book II" by Glenn Van Ekeren: "Business has only two functions," writes Peter Drucker, "marketing and innovation." Consider these phrases posted on separate roadside signs: A peach looks good...with lots of fuzz... but man's no peach... and never was... Burma Shave! In 1925, Burma Shave knew they had a great product but were ineffective in marketing it. So, their roadside advertising was implemented. Today, the Burma Shave commercial are highly recognized as memorable trivia. Here's another exemplary approach combining innovation and unique marketing. A small garage-based company took a single product, biodegradable soap, broke the customary marketing trends and amassed a fortune. Using multi-level marketing, Amway left its competitors green with envy. First, they produced a quality product, developed unique packaging, attached distinctive labeling, and then used direct salespeople to sell their product. It is working to the tune of an estimated $1 billion in annual revenues. Domino's Pizza shocked the industry with their original idea: "Guaranteed delivery in 30 minutes or $3.00 off."Quick service is now a minimum standard in the food industry. Innovative marketing-could it be the third function of business?*3 Innovation is one of the most important traits for the prosperity of American business. Hope our Pan Pacific and Asian countries may catch it as soon as possible! ------------------------------------- References *1. 101605-6187 "Business & Administration" (PPAA 19), ***** Saturday, 10:37 a. m., October 16, 2005 #Second printing of the First Edition on April 8, 2004 *****Some good personal traits for an individual to be successful in business and some golden words of wisdom for positive thinking By Tiffany Chang "After an investigative research on a person's character, scholars found that personal traits play a very important role in helping business executives and leaders to be successful. They found out that persons who are leaders should have wisdon and talent. These people have a broader interest and aptitude. They are good in self expression and public communication. Possibly, the most vivid fact to be felt by everyone is that, these persons all have a strong inner desire to pursue business accomplishment and have their good performance recognized," said Dr. Tony Lei, President of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI). " Among various business organizations, a research was conducted on the work performance of the American college graduates. It revealed that the following personal traits are important for the success of their business: (1) Ability to get along with people. (2) Ability to get things done. (3) Intelligence. (4) Desire for advancement. (5) Human relations skills. (6) Leading and administrative abilities. (7) Communication skills. (8) Ability to take important task. (9) Judgment. (10) Responsibility. (11) Decisions. (12) Adaptability. (13) Dependability. (14) Loyalty. (15) Vision. (16) Imagination."*1 As a supervisor or manager inbusiness, there are certain techniques that you can use to improve your effectiveness to have telephone conversational skills: "(1) Answer your phone promptly. (2) Identify yourself and your company immediately. (3) Be friendly. (4) Have all your necessary resources available. (5) Indicate your regret or appreciation when applicable. (6) Use caller's name if it's offered. (7) Express your willingness to help. (8) Don't interrupt your customer. (9) Get as much information as you can. (10) Be understandable in your communication. (11) Be accurate and complete when giving information. (12) Be easy to deal with."*2 We would also like to list 12 effective and 13 ineffective telephone techniques in business. A. 12 effective talent : (1) Smile. (2) Speak clearly and concisely. (3) Be enthusiatic. (4) Lower your voice pitch (5) Talk positive. (6) Be prepared for objections. (7) Talk directly into the mouthpiece. (8) Consider your customer's personality. (9) Speak in terms of benefits. (10) Discuss rather than tell. (11) Always thank the listener for his time. (12) Follow up if necessary."*3 B. 13 ineffective telephone skills are: (1) Frowning. (2) Muttering. (3) Sounding tired.(4) Speaking in monotone. (5) Being negative. (6) Being over confident. (7) Holding the telephone under your chin. (8) Rambling. (9) Making accusatory remarks. (10) Arguing. (11) Hanging up abruptly. (12) Forgetting to thank the listener. (13) Try to talk and do something else at the same time."*4 To be successful in business, we need to have positive thinking traits. There are 12 personal traits that characterize a positive thinker: Optimism, Enthusiam, Belief, Intelligence, Courage, Integrity, confidence, Judgement, Persistence, Liveliness, Vision, and Desire to excel.*5 Develop a clear vision of our prefered future, then get focused on key activities and efforts that take us in that direction. We shall see performance gains, achieve our goals, and have a happier and more successful practice. By persuing our own personal strategic plans with love and service, we will increase our energies, motivations, satisfactions, happiness, and the worthy value of our lives in business. The Graduate School of Business and Public Administration (GSBPA) of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) has put effort in spreading the golden words of wisdom for positive thinking in the business and public administration world.*6 "People worry about the huge amount of creativity that is wasted---lost forever---because talented people are prevented from giving their best by their lack of ability to influence others effectively," wrote Dr. Ken Blanchard in the 'Foreword' of the book entitled "Winning Ways," written by Dick Lyles.*7 "The business world has changed; organizations are getting flatter and more networked. Even when new ideas are well thought out, there are still problems in putting them into practice within your group," George Fuller wrote in the 'Introduction' of his book, "Win/win management: leading people in the new workplace."*8 There are lots of common headaches most of supervisors and leaders have to confront. "It's easy to understand how the broad scope these problems can easily lead to a less than steller attitude toward your job. However, adoping a sense of futility only serve to make matters worse. On the other hand, maintain a positive attitude helps you place things in perspective and can make coping eith problems a lot easier to do."*9 To initiate our programs more effectively for the people and communities who are interested to participate the programs, we need to emphasize the spirit of positive attitude and positive thinking. The following are words of wisdom which are worth reading collected by the Graduate School of Business and Public Administration (GSBPA) of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI): ***"Few things help an individual more than to place responsibility upon him and to let him know that you trust him." --- Booker T. Washington ***"The reward for work well done is the opportunity to do more." --- Jonas Salk, MD ***"Those who trust us, educate us." --- George Eliot ***"Watch your thought, for they become words. Choose your words, for they become actions. Understand your actions, for they become habits. Study your habits, for they will become your character. Yo grow profitably. For the people of ServiceMaster, their work is not merely the making of a living; it is a way of life." That solid philosophy has helped ServiceMaster become one of the largest cleaning service conglomerates in the world. ------------------------------------- References *1. Leadership is love --- a way to reaching a goal By Tiffany Chang and PAI of WBTI*1In our real world, people are led by leaders. A successful leader is consistently follwed by others. People follow because they have a belief in the direction, intergrity, and competence of the one leading. We are pleased to quote the following three short but meaningful ones: ***** The ultimate responsibility of a leader is to facilitate other people's development as well as his own. ---Fred Pryor ***** To be a leader means willingness to risk--and willingness to love. Has the leader given you something from the heart? ---Hubert H. Humphrey ***** The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality. The last is to say thank you. In between the leader is a servant. ---Max Dupree; "Leadership Is an Art" It's our pleasure to post a short story from "Speaker's Source Book II" by Glenn Van Ekeren: I went on a search to become a leader. I searched high and low. I spoke with authority. People listened. But alas, there was one who was wiser than I, and they follow that individual. I sought to inspire confidence, but the crowd responded, "Why should I trust you?" I postured, and I assumed the look of leadership with a countenance that flowed with confidence and pride. But many passed me by and never noticed my air of elegance. I ran ahead of the others, pointed the way to new heights. I demonstrated that I knew the road to greatness. And then I looked back, and I was alone. "What shall I do?" I queried. "I've tried hard and used all that I know." And I sat down and pondered long. And then, I listened to the voices around me. And I heard what the group was trying to accomplish. I rolled up my sleeves and joined in the work. As we worked, I asked, "Are we all together in what we want to do and how to get the job done?" And we thought together, and we fought together, and we struggled towards our goal. I found myself encouraging the fainthearted. I sought the ideas of those too shy to speak out. I taught those who had little skill. I praised those who worked hard. When our task was completed, one of the group turned to me and said, "This would not have been done but for your leadership." At first, I said, "I didn't lead. I just worked with the rest." And then I understood, leadership is not a goal. It's a way to reaching a goal. I lead best when I help others to go where we've decide to go. I lead best when I help others to use themselves creatively. I lead best when I forget about myself as leader and focus on my group...their needs and their goals. To lead is to serve...to give...to achieve together. ---By Anonymous*2 ------------------------------------- References *1. The following is a special collection of the report on the personal traits of leaders. It is posted through the courtesy of the "天下雜誌" of Worldjournal.com:? 666666666666 888888888888888888888888 777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777 **************************************************
