Addressing the efforts the Bush Administration has taken to lead the world toward values and understanding by Dr. Condoleezza Rice BY PAI of WBTI National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice spoke about the Global War on Terror's war of ideas, addressing the efforts the Bush Administration has taken to lead the world toward values and understanding that will bring a just and lasting peace, at the United States Institute of Peace in Washington D.C., Thursday, August 19, 2004. The National Security Council was established by the National Security Act of 1947 (PL 235 - 61 Stat. 496; U.S.C. 402), amended by the National Security Act Amendments of 1949 (63 Stat. 579; 50 U.S.C. 401 et seq.). Later in 1949, as part of the Reorganization Plan, the Council was placed in the Executive Office of the President.*1 The National Security Council is the President's principal forum for considering national security and foreign policy matters with his senior national security advisors and cabinet officials. Since its inception under President Truman, the function of the Council has been to advise and assist the President on national security and foreign policies. The Council also serves as the President's principal arm for coordinating these policies among various government agencies.*2 The following is a biography of Dr. Condoleezza Rice, National Security Advisor on July 2004:*3 Dr. Condoleezza Rice became the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, commonly referred to as the National Security Advisor, on January 22, 2001. In June 1999, she completed a six year tenure as Stanford University 's Provost, during which she was the institution's chief budget and academic officer. As Provost she was responsible for a $1.5 billion annual budget and the academic program involving 1,400 faculty members and 14,000 students. As professor of political science, Dr. Rice has been on the Stanford faculty since 1981 and has won two of the highest teaching honors -- the 1984 Walter J. Gores Award for Excellence in Teaching and the 1993 School of Humanities and Sciences Dean's Award for Distinguished Teaching. At Stanford, she has been a member of the Center for International Security and Arms Control, a Senior Fellow of the Institute for International Studies, and a Fellow (by courtesy) of the Hoover Institution. Her books include Germany Unified and Europe Transformed (1995) with Philip Zelikow, The Gorbachev Era (1986) with Alexander Dallin, and Uncertain Allegiance: The Soviet Union and the Czechoslovak Army (1984). She also has written numerous articles on Soviet and East European foreign and defense policy, and has addressed audiences in settings ranging from the U.S. Ambassador's Residence in Moscow to the Commonwealth Club to the 1992 and 2000 Republican National Conventions. From 1989 through March 1991, the period of German reunification and the final days of the Soviet Union, she served in the Bush Administration as Director, and then Senior Director, of Soviet and East European Affairs in the National Security Council, and a Special Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs. In 1986, while an international affairs fellow of the Council on Foreign Relations, she served as Special Assistant to the Director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In 1997, she served on the Federal Advisory Committee on Gender -- Integrated Training in the Military. She was a member of the boards of directors for the Chevron Corporation, the Charles Schwab Corporation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the University of Notre Dame, the International Advisory Council of J.P. Morgan and the San Francisco Symphony Board of Governors. She was a Founding Board member of the Center for a New Generation, an educational support fund for schools in East Palo Alto and East Menlo Park, California and was Vice President of the Boys and Girls Club of the Peninsula . In addition, her past board service has encompassed such organizations as Transamerica Corporation, Hewlett Packard, the Carnegie Corporation, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, The Rand Corporation, the National Council for Soviet and East European Studies, the Mid-Peninsula Urban Coalition and KQED, public broadcasting for San Francisco. Born November 14, 1954 in Birmingham, Alabama, she earned her bachelor's degree in political science, cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of Denver in 1974; her master's from the University of Notre Dame in 1975; and her Ph.D. from the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver in 1981. Tuesday, November 30, 2004 Copyright @ Las Vegas Review-Journal Princess-Marine love story ends LV resident says cultural, religious differences ruined romance with Muslim beauty By RICHARD LAKE @ Copyright 2004, REVIEW-JOURNAL Meriam Al-Khalifa and Jason Johnson, shown at the Aladdin's Desert Passage in June 2001, recently filed for divorce after five years of marriage. Photo by Craig L. Moran. Jason Johnson suspected that someday his personal life might once again capture the attention of the world, but he was surprised anyway Monday afternoon when he found himself talking about how it all went wrong. "Oh my God," he said, shaking his head. "I knew it would get out sooner or later, but this was really fast." Johnson's was the kind of love story usually told only in Disney movies. It was a tale of an American Marine so dazzled by the beauty of a young royal princess that he risked everything for her. That "Romeo and Juliet"-like love affair, once dubbed "The Princess and the Marine" in a made-for-TV movie, has ended now, set against a backdrop of Las Vegas nightclubs, an international assassin and a spurned love that continues to endure, if you believe Johnson. "It was what she wanted," he said simply of the couple's recent divorce filing. Back in 1999, Johnson was a Marine stationed in Bahrain, an island nation off the coast of Saudi Arabia. He'd been a Marine for 2 1/2 years and had hoped to make a career of it. While in Bahrain, he met Meriam Al-Khalifa, the beautiful teenage princess related to the country's royal and ruling family. He was a Mormon, she a Muslim, but to them, the differences did not matter. They fell in love. The relationship they formed was forbidden by her family, so Johnson worked out a scheme to spirit his young princess off to America when his tour ended. He disguised her in a flannel shirt and a New York Yankees ball cap, and he forged her military identification to get her to the United States. The plan worked, and after a drawn-out fight with immigration authorities, the couple married at the Candlelight Wedding Chapel on the Strip. He was 23, she was 19. Their story made worldwide headlines. In addition to the TV movie, the couple made the TV talk show rounds, including an appearance on "Oprah." Johnson was demoted a rank for his misdeeds, and eventually was discharged from the Marines, with the special condition that he not be allowed to re-enlist, he said. He and his new wife, whose name is spelled Maryam in official documents, got jobs, and they went about living their lives. But, said Johnson, a valet parker on the Strip, things were never as rosy as the stories made them seem. There was constant tension with her family, he said, and there was even one time the FBI told him they'd intercepted a Syrian national who said he'd been paid $500,000 to assassinate her. That incident, together with the couple's religious and cultural differences, further widened a gulf that Johnson said his bride's powerful family tried to widen time and time again. "The royal family made me look really bad," he said. No one answered the door at Al-Khalifa's apartment Monday afternoon, and she is not represented by an attorney in the divorce proceedings. As the tension in the marriage mounted, Johnson said, his wife got sucked into the Las Vegas nightlife. He said she began partying with her friends and ignoring him. She became particularly interested in Arabic-themed nightclubs, and in the gay clubs that cluster around the Hard Rock Hotel on Paradise Road, he said. He noted they used to frequent those clubs as a couple and enjoyed the atmosphere. "She's gone off the deep end," he said. About a year ago, Johnson said, his wife left him. "I had tried to work it out with her last year," he said. "But that's not what she wanted." He resisted her urgings that they get a divorce, he said, but ultimately realized there was nothing he could do. They filed for divorce jointly on Nov. 17, the day after their fifth wedding anniversary. The paperwork says they are "incompatible in marriage." "Deep down inside, she knows that I loved her more than anything in the world," Johnson said. "I can say I enjoyed every minute I spent with her." He is living in Summerlin now with his stepmother, who also is getting over a broken relationship. 666666666666666 55555555555555555555555555 333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333 *************************************************** | |

Lei President (702) 255-9058 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- August 28, 2001 Third Edition Senator Dina Titus* Appointed by WBTI as a Fellow of Public Administration By Cheryl Moss and Tiffany Chang "Our greastest asset at Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) is our people --- not facades or fountains, not landscapes or lakescapes, but people --- faculty, advisory board members, administration, and a host of friends," said President Dr. Tony Lei of WBTI. "On the publications of WBTI through multimedia locally, nationally, and internationally, we have featured many of our own: U. S. Senators Harry Reid and John Ensign, U. S. Representatives James Gibbons and Shelley Berkley, Governor of Nevada Kenny Guinn, Pepperdine University President Andrew Benton, Chief Federal Judge Lloyed Geroge, Dr. Charles Runnels, Former Chief Justice and now Justice of the Nevada Supreme Court William Maupin, Dr. William Thompson, Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, among others." "Enriching our research and community service process were made possible by these friends who joined and supported this academic institute. WBTI is really a chain of dedicated individuals, intellectuals, and professionals who join to research, serve, support and to give. We take great pride of our people, including our outstanding faculty members. They are some of the best in the world. We are sincere servers to help improve the quality of life of all the residents and visitors of Nevada." Nevada State Senator Dina Titus was appointed by Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) as a Fellow of its Public Administration Institution (PAI) on August 15, 2001. She was very pleased to receive the congratulations call from Dr. Tony Lei early that morning. Having out of town for a couple of days, the call reminded her that at the suggestion of U. S. Senator Harry Reid, former Las Vegas Mayor Jan Jones has offered to step down as Nevada's Democatic National Committeewoman, and Dina Titus will seek that job. This will give her some Washington, D. C., connections and enhance her political profile. With four trips a year to Washington, D. C., the committeewoman and committeeman from each state are expected to speak on party issues, raise money, and help recruit candidates. "It's really my honor to be a Fellow of Public Administration Institution," says Senator Dina Titus to the readers of "Nevada Examiner". "I'm also honor to be invited by Dr. Tony Lei as a Special Guest to the Event and Dinner Party for a Special Tribute to U. S. Senator Harry Reid on August 24, 2001," she continued. Dina Titus will bring her husband Dr. Wright to attend the Party at the Asia Palace Chinese Restaurant on the Friday evening. Dr. Wright is a Senior Professor in the Department of History at UNLV. The Event and Dinner Party was initiated by Dr. Tony Lei and Ms. Nancy Diaz. It will be chaired by Dr. Tony Lei, Dr. R. D. Prabhu, Dr. Ram Singh, Mr. Tonie Sison, and Ms. Rita Vaswani. Joined with more than 36 hosts of the Dinner Party by community and organizational leaders, business exevutives and owners, and officials, we are expecting to have guests and participants about 380 people. As a Professor of Political Science of UNLV , Dina Titus is now a famous Senator of the State Nevada. She is also a State Senator Democratic Leader. On August 14, 2001, she said that she would run for Lieutenant Govenor if Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman runs for Nevada Governor. "She's brilliant, and she would be a great governor," Mayor Goodman siad of Senator Titus. To her new honor and appointment as a Fellow of Public Administration Institution (PAI) of WBTI on August 15, 2001, Senator Titus agreed with District Judge Valorie Vega on "This position will undoubtedly provide me with avenues for exploring improvements in public services to which I'm most dedicated." It is really a valuable advancement that we may have such an appropriate and achieved individual like Dina as a colleague to our Institution. Senator Titus' expertise and good reputation in political science has been known locally and nationally. With her outstanding professional expertise and practical public administration experience, Senator Titus' acceptance as a fellow of PAI evidences that in supporting Director Dr. William Thompason with Fellows Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa, Professor Roy Adamson, and Justice of the Supreme Court Nancy Becker, they will form an excellent leadership team launching PAI into the next milleunnium for academic excellence and administrative practicality. "The maturity of citizens society is the fundamental guarantee for the normal processing of democratic politics. In a citizens society, it depends highly on the team of public intellectuals. A good public intellectual interates peoples' opinion, analyze rationally, and points out wise perspectives and notice. Dina plays an important and significant responsibility of mission as an achieved intellectual at the same time as an important statewoman. Our Nevada is critically in need of these intellectuals and professionals in every kind of fields," said Dr. Tony Lei, President of WBTI. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On "Nevada Examiner" in August 2001 *Dina Titus is now also an Adjunct Professor of Administrative Strategies of the Graduate School of Business and Public Administration (GSBPA) of WBTI.
