Dr. Andrew Benton, New President of Pepperdine University, Is Outstanding to Lead It into the Future By Tiffany ChangOn behalf of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI), Dr. Tony Lei is excitingly enjoyed and heartfeltlly thanked Dr. and Mrs. Andre Benton, President of Pepperdine University, for the creative Christmas card sent by them. WBTI's website is now available to the public at http://communitylink.reviewjournal.com/lvrj/wbti. It is offered by the Community Link of Las Vegas Review Journal. This article is shown in the web at the first page of WBTI Newsbrief. Dr. Andrew K. Benton earned his Juris Doctor from Oklahoma City University School of Law. He served as the executive vice president of Pepperdine University from 1991 to 2000. A 47 years old native Kansas, he became the seventh president of Pepperdine University on June 16, 2000. The Inauguration of the president was held on September 23 at the Firestone Fieldhouse of Pepperdine in Malibu, California. "Andy's leadership skills and experience have prepared him well, and I believe the University is in good hands. He is an outstanding choice to lead Pepperdine into the future," said the sixth President Dr. David Davenport at the time of his announcement. Dr. Davenport carried the torch of leadership for fifteen year. He had it led exceptionally well. Pepperdine has achieved an enviable position in the world of higher education. "One of my priorities will be be 'telling the Pepperdine story' of quality and values to a large audience, reaching a broader demographic, and having a global range," said Dr. Benton. "We need to strengthen Pepperdine's diversity, its connection to its heritage, its sense of community and community involvement, and its scholarship and culture through faculty involvement in outside research and publishing." "Chairman Thomas Bost of the Board of Regents believes that this new President is best equipped to lead Pepperdine into the next millennium with academic excellence and Christian values. Dr. Wiiliam Banowsky, the school's fouth president, assures that the new president would seek the higher standards for academic and spiritual excellence," said Dr. Lei who received his MBA and Ed.D. in Institutional Management from Pepperdine in 1969 and 1980, respectively. Pepperdine was recently ranked among the top 50 national universities by U.S. News and World Report, placing it in the first tier with such schools as Harvard and Yale. It has held the 51st spot for years. As its reputation grows, Pepperdine's ranking climbs as well. It is now listed as tied for the 49th spot. Pepperdin is the youngest school among the 50s. Dr. Lei received a beautiful calendar of 2001 signed by U.S. Senator Harry Reid from his Senate Office in Washington D. C. It was made by the United States Capitol Historical Society. How nice is this Christmas for WBTI! "Senator Reid loves heartily this country and our people. His leadership is accenturated with practical knowledge and diligent effort through his intelligence. We are honored to have him as our Advisor and Vice Chairman of our Advisory Board since April 10, 1998. He has achieved many years of accomplishments to improve the quality of life of all Nevadans and help people realize the American Dream. On December 5, he was re-elected by Senate Democrats to their leadership team. This has given the veteran lawmaker a strong voice in determining the direction of a body splitted likely 50-50 in the upcoming congressional session," said Dr. Lei. Dr. Lei was joyful and thankful with the Faculty of WBTI to receive a letter from Mayor Oscar Goodman from the Mayor Office of the City of Las Vegas. It stated that, "I am writing to thank you for your recent correspondence and for your wonderful article. It was greatly appreciated. As Mayor, I will continue to devote my energies into the preservation and improvement of the standard of living enjoyed here in the City of Las Vegas. If I can ever be of assistannce with another situation, please do not hesitate to call. I look forward to working with you in the future." "Elected in June 1999, Mayor Goodman leads one of the fastes growing cities in the United States into the next Millenium. The Mayor is a lifelong friend of the community. He and his family believe in education. He and his wife Carolyn helped created one of the finest educational institutional, Meadows School, in Southern Nevada. He has been honored as Executive Advisor of WBTI since May 1999. Mayor Goodman is committed to preserving Las Vegas' status as the 'most Livable City in America' for people to live an enriched and prosperous life. He is also committed to ensuring the city maintains its spot on Fortune Magazine's annual ranking of the 'Top Ten Places for Business'," said Dr. Lei.

Dr. John McManus' Expertise in Educational Administration By Tiffany ChangOn November 30, 2000, Dr. Tony Lei received a beautiful Christmas card signed by Dr. John McManus from Pepperdine University, California. Tony was suprised and humbled upon seeing the familiar signature, which brought back memorie of about twenty years ago. In 1981-82, Jack was Tony's big boss when Tony worked as a computer consultant in the Academic Computing Laboratory and studied in the doctoral program at Pepperdine. The most difficult course with 5 units in the Program, failed by a sizable number of students, was "Quantitative Approaches to Educational Research and Evaluation". Jack taught that course and Tony received an "A" grade (4.00 GPA) in the course. Dr. McManus, Tony's respectable teacher, has now been promoted as the Dean of the Graduate School of Education and Psychology (GSEP) of Pepperdine University. Congratulations! Jack also taught a course named "Computer Utilization in Educational Management" in the doctoral program. Tony was his student once again. In 1985, Tony presented a paper to the IMC's Asia-Pacific Regional Information and Micrographic Management Congress. It was published by the Proceedings of the Conference, entitled "Computer Education, Organizational Changes, and Principal's Decision-Making." A research project entitled "On the Relationship of Computer Science Learning and Standard Mathematics Scores," was presented by Tony to the Data and Document Systems Conference of the International Information Management Congress in 1989 at Taipei. The paper was published by the Proceedings of the Conference of IMC. All of those together with Tony's technical experience in the Lab and teaching performance in the business graduate school of the University made it possible for him to complete his Doctoral Dissertation through quantitative analysis and computer utilization. The Dissertation, named "A Study of the Impact of Enrollment in a Computer Science Class on Mathematics Scores and Attendance in a Secondary School," was published by University Microfilms Inc., Michigan, in 1990. It received the copyright from the United States Copyright Office of the Library of Congress, U.S.A. in January 30, 1991. Tony was an Associate Professor of Information Management at the Graduate School of Business Administration of Chunghsing University, Taipei, from 1985 to 1990. Public Administration Institution (PAI) of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) has the following faculty members winning the November elections: Myron Leavitt and Nancy Bcker as Justices of the Supreme Court, Valorie Vega, and Lisa Brown, Cheryl Moss ( Family Division) as Judges of District Court, Ann Zimmerman (Las Vegas Township) and Natalie Tyrrell (North Las Vegas Township) as Justices of the Peace. WBTI has long time publicized their participation and efforts in community service and academic performance. The Faculty of WBTI joined Dr. Lei to pay a high tribute to these "Boa Ching Tien" (The great Judge of righteousness respected and loved by all the people in Chinese literature and show) of Nevada with their sincerest congratulations! "With the effort of the Faculty and under the brilliant leadership of Dr. Tony Lei, WBTI has accomplished valuable contributions to the academic research and community service for Nevada. We are proud and honored to have Justice Nancy Becker as a PAI Fellow. Her participation in this Institution will enrich and enhance its academic production featured with practicality and adaptability as an efficient 'Intelligence Tank' with her excellent and impressive public administration experience and contribution," said the President of Seniors United, Lillian Wallace. It was delivered by a feature article published by Nevada Examiner on May 19, 2000. Dr. McManus believes that, "technology is the backbone of any communications system." On his Message delivered in the Summer 2000 Issue of the 'Pepperdine Colleague,' he stated that, "As part of GSEP's position as a leader in education technology, we have established the goal of installing reliable and powerful computer servers, as well as 'redundant systems' that will be automatically operational in the event the main server is disabled. The work of students, faculty, and staff must not be disrupted." "Just as we have had successes in the past, we look forward to the future," said the Dean last month. "I have been working with the president and the provost in sharpening the definition of the role of dean. It is safe to say that the position of dean will become more outward-looking. Future tasks will include fund-raising, putting together two Boards of Visitors, one for Psychology and Education Divisions, and the creation of more partnerships in the community." May the quiet peace and great joy be yours. Nevada Examiner, WBTI, and Seniors United all wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

SENIORS UNITED HIGHLIGHTS MAGAZINE December 2000 Seniors United Will Advance with Modern Management and Service Above Self By Dr. Tony T. LeiWhile President Lillian Wallace of Seniors United has been long time identified as a strong person, she used to mention her adoration of her passing husband, Julian. Her memorable event extended to the evening on May 14 of this year. She and her husband were invited by me and my wife, Judy to the famous Guadalajara Restaurant of Texas Casino and Hotel for a celebration of Mother's Day. With the best quality of food and noble atmosphere, the first lady of Seniors United enjoyed a very happy and memorable treat made possible by my thoughtfulness and generosity. Julian's joyful and talk away appearance during the party was all the time vividly impressed upon us since that dinner of reunion as a family. I and my wife have worked sincerely and contributingly for Seniors United, because we respect their valuable spirit and idea to work for the benefits of Nevadan seniors through education. The progress and development of Seniors United, since I was elected as its Executive Vice President in February, has been recognized and applauded by a great deal of people affiliated with this organization. It is primarily dedicated to the service of the political education for all our Nevadan seniors. This has greatly increased the popularity and reputation of Seniors United as an important and influential organization both for improving seniors' benefits and voting governement officials through educational activities and media like the Forum and Highlights Magazine. It was under the efforts of the Wallaces, CEO and President, and my dedication, together with all the executive board members, Seniors United has played an oustanding role in offering opportunities both for candidates for public service to deliver their constructive ideas and for the seniors in Nevada to recongnize how to make their right choice of voting. With my expertise and integrity as a famous professor of management, as evidenced by my writing college text books on management, presenting research papers to renowned international conferences, I have enjoyed the distinctive mission with philanthrophy and realized some of the good purposes and creeds of this organization through many years of accomplishment with knowledge, talents, and experiences on effective management and educational technology balanced with theoreticality and practicality. By the act of love itself, we are enriched. Love in action is service above self. Make service a part of our characters and experience the abundant reward that comes from serving others. I am one of the persons who glorify and thank the Almighty and believe we trust that God will be with those who honor Him. If a window was closed, God might re-open the window or even open a door for the people who is eager to utilize his or her knowledge and expertise to serve. Power in politics should have a direction that power based on knowledge is the power of righteousness. We wish that a pure fountain may prosper and enrich our splendid and golden country through the spirit that knowledge calls, ultimately, for a life of service. The great Winston Churchill said that we all make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. In God we trust. As I am marching to the team of seniors, life will be delightful for the purpose to serve our seniors and lovely society. After my wife and I had enjoyed a trip to Tucson, Arizona on November 14- 17 through the Senior Tripsters, Inc., we are resumed with engery to serve again our seniors. We shall have a nice celebrating party for Christmas with good entertainment. We invite heartfeltly all our members and friends to join us a joyful reunion. Wish you a Merry Christimas and a Happy New Year!

Julian, Our Dear, Come Back With Us Please By Dr. Tony T. LeiHow beautiful is this Christmas! Sunshine is always with us here in Las Vegas. The weather is also mild. "It's better than Houston," said Mike, our young son flying back home for the festival from his office in Texas. John, our old son, Hung-yin, our sister were also here from their offices in San Francisco for Christimas. Julian, our dear, we have a reunion party again this evening. Be with us please. Like every and many times of our reunion dinners, your nature and appearance have brought a lot of joyful and spiritual atmosphere. You could not imagine how thoughtful that I have arranged the best Chinese Restaurant Downtown, Gee Joon Chinese Restaurant, as our Christmas dinner party this year. We shall have a center seat for you. Your lovely and capable wife is going to be treated by Judy and me with the best quality of food and kindness in this festival dinner. "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." (Isaiah 9:6) This is a prophesy given to Isaiah, a Jewish prophet who began his ministry in 740 B.C., more than seven hundered years before the birth of Christ. The prophet Isaiah also fortold the virgin birth. "There the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel."Isaiah 7:14. The name Immanuel means "God is with us". Christians believe that Jesus is the Messiah the Jewish prophets fortold. As we celebrate Christmas, it is good to remember the reason for this Holiday. Christmas is a time of celebration and generosity. The angels appearing to the shephards in Bethelem on the night of Christ's birth sang, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests." This is a time of love, giving, and reconciliation. It's a wonderful time to restore relationships with a family member, a past friend, or a coworker. It is a time to give to those who are needy and spread the good cheers to everyone you see. It is also a time to grow closer to the Creator as we reflect on his goodness. The magic of Christmas is most vividly seen in giving to children. They all know about Santa Claus and the gifts he brings. It is the spirit of "Santa Claus" that is important to them. It is the hope of receiving something you had wished for. Receiving gifts is a way to experience love and joy. It is a time for children to experience the love of their parents, uncles, aunties, grandparents, friends, and God. In a commercialized Christmas world, it is good to step back and remember that the purpose of giving and receiving is not to satisfy our desires for good things or to fulfill our obligations but to show our love towards one another. As we pay our special tribute to Julian this Christmas season, we reflect on the gift of life that God has given us and the chances each day to use it for good and to remember the good times. Our Christmas wish is for all to have a warm and joyful celebration. We hope the God of Heaven will look upon all of us with His favor and blessings. May your Christmas always be special. On behalf of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI), Judy and I excitingly enjoyed and heartfeltly thanked Dr. and Mrs. Andrew Benton, President of Pepperdine University, for the creative Christmas card sent by them. WBTI's website is now available to the public at http://communitylink.reviewjournal.com/lvrj/wbti. Readers can read articles of WBTI and find other links to education, seniors, arts, culture, and other resources. We welcome everyone to visit our website. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

John Ensign honored as Vice Chairman of the advisory board of WBTI By Tiffany ChangNorth Las Vegas Justice Court Judge-elect Natalie Tyrell once wrote a letter of appreciation to Dr. Lei from her Office, "....I want to share with you my favorite quote. It is by the great Winston Churchill. It exemplifies the driving force by which I start out each day. He said, 'We all make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.' ...." By the act of love itself, we are enriched. Love in action is service above self. We encourage people to make service a part of our characters and experience the abundant reward that comes from serving others. U.S. Senator-elect John Ensign's great-grandfather first came to Nevada almost a hundred years ago as a miner and labored in its towns. This respectable man worked hard to provide for his family and taught his children the value of hard work, integrity, and independence. "The significance of life is to build and educate the continuous lives of the universe," said Dr. Tony Lei, President of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI). People came to America to seek the American dream. Even though not all of them realize their American dream, eventually they could teach and help their children to accomplish their contributions to our country. As a born-again Christian, people have been inspired by his sincererity, humbleness, and credibility much more than just his wealthy and handsome appearance now. On October 15, John attended the worship service of the Liberty Baptist Church. He offered a short speech of testifmony. He said that he was very frustrated with his first taste of political failure, when he lost by a mere 428 votes to U.S. Senator Harry Reid. However, he believes God and has surrendered his fate to God. John's faith in God helped him to overcome his frustration and disappointment and enabled him to continue to strive to succeed. The Bible says "...though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith - of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire - may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed (1 Peter 1:6-7)". If a window was closed, God might re-open the window or even open a different door for those who are eager to utilize his or her knowledge and expertise to serve. As all Christians acknowledge - with God, anything is possible. People believed with John that he said, "I have the passion for the fight and the unshakable belief that together we can build a better Nevada." In the Pastor Teis' meeting Office, John agreed with Dr. Lei, also a born-again Chrisitan, that WBTI would honor him as Advisor and Vice Chairman of its Advisory Board. In the first paragraph of this column on September 15, it is stated that on September 7, U.S. Senate Candidate John Ensign wrote: "Please accept my best wishes as you come together in celebration of the Thai Performaning Arts, Appreciation Day 2000. The importance of sharing culture through art and festivities that bring people together serves to enhance all of us more by enriching our lives with the diversity of people and their customs. I especially would like to extend my appreciation to Dr. Tony T. Lei for his commitment and enthusiastic support of the Thai Performing Arts." John received Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree form the Colorado State University in 1985. He accepted Dr. Lei's invitation as a Guest Speaker to talk about protecting Social Security and Medicare for our Nevadan seniors at a Forum held by Seniors United. He believes that America must honor its words to seniors. His scholastic and gentle appearance has won a lot of applause and respect. In community service, Dr. Lei's hero is the great servant who has given all for the betterment of others' lives. Let our candles fuel a fire that will fan out an ever-lasting circles. With these circles together we can close our eyes and envision a community that is safe, peaceful, and healthy. The Bible teaches: "...let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth (1 John 3:18)." District (Family) Court Judge-elect Cheryl Moss wrote Dr. Lei, "I am delighted and honored to be appointed as an Associate Fellow of the Public Administration Institution of Washington Business and Technology Institute. Thank you for this opportunity to serve, and I hope to gain more knowledge, insight and awareness about public service and community issues through your prestigious institution. I remain dedicated to helping the community, and I am inspired by your leadership, wisdom and guidance. I am also fortunate to have met you and your wife, Judy, because you are both active and dynamic individuals in the community. Your accomplishments and achievements have demonstrated that taking part in the community does make a difference. Best wishes and thank you again for your unselfish kindness, support and encouragement." Power in politics should have a direction that the power based on knowledge is the power of righteousness. We wish that a pure fountain may prosper and enrich our spendid and golden country through the spirit that knowledge calls, ultimately, for a life of service. "In God we trust. Life is for the purpose to serve our lovely society," Dr. Lei stated. In Seniors United, we shall have a nice celebrating party for Christmas with good entertainment. We invited heartfeltly all our members and friends to join us a joyful reunion. Wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

John Ensign: a born-again Christian By Tiffany ChangIt is not very possible for anybody all the way with good luck from the beginning to the end of his or her whole life. One will enevitably face somekind of frustration. The attitude that one holds in facing one's frustration will, nevertheless, decide what would be his or her fate to be followed. If anybody gives up soon after he or she gets a frusration or difficulty, then the following days for his or her life will most probably be in dead end. John Ensign has been impressived as a handsome, strong, and rich man. He has been long time identified as son of big casino leading figure of Mandalay Bay. John believes the struglling effort to success. He used to remind us of his humble beginnings. His mother was a change girl in Reno. Supporting three children with no help from her ex-husband when she met and married Mike Ensign. She went on to become a person and now she is the wife of famous Chairman of Mandalay Bay Group. John's great-grandfather first came to Nevada almost a hundred years ago as a miner and labored in its towns. This respectable man worked hard to provide for his family and teach his children the value of hard work, integrity, and independence. "The significance of life is to build and educate the continuous lives of the universe," said Dr. Tony Lei, President of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI). People came to here even not being able for all of them to realize their American dream but eventurely they could teach and help their children to accomplish their contributions for our country. John's wife, Darlene, encouraged him into his first political race for Congress. Earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Colorado State University in 1995, his scholarstic and gentle appearance has won lots of applause and respect from knowledgeable ladies in social activities. It was when he was attending veterinarian school that John became a born-again Christian. He was urging by Darlene to become involved in a men's Christian group. In the first paragraph of this column on September 15, it stated that on September 7, U.S. Senate Candidate John Ensign wrote: "Please accept my best wishes as you come together in celebration of the Thai Performaning Arts, Appreciation Day 2000.
