Alumna Returns to Training Roots
By Graduate School of Education and Psychology, Pepperdine University and Jennifer Kung

It is our pleasure to post the following information from the Graduate School of Education and Psychology of Pepperdine University:

Current News Releases
August 2006

The Pepperdine University motto – Freely ye received, freely give, resonates with Shannon Hanrahan (M ’95 GSEP). As an alumna of the Graduate School of Education and Psychology (GSEP), Hanrahan’s life as a psychologist was off to a great start. GSEP had placed her in an internship at the Hollywood Wilshire YMCA. Once there, Hanrahan obtained her necessary 3,000 hours of counseling to receive licensing and passed the state licensing exam on the first try. "GSEP prepared me not only in the classroom, but through the hands-on training opportunities I was afforded," comments Hanrahan. "I was more than prepared to become a psychologist." *1

Knowing that her therapy focus would be children, Hanrahan worked at an HIV Testing and Counseling facility in LA County, and at a residential boy’s home. She then began a private practice. "My private practice was thriving, I did not need another job," says Hanrahan. "But when the YMCA I worked with during my days at Pepperdine came calling, I felt a need to give back to the community."

Hanrahan now serves the Hollywood Wilshire YMCA Counseling Center as the Clinical Director. Returning to the YMCA was like coming home for Hanrahan. She had grown tremendously during her training days there as a GSEP student intern, and now had the chance to mentor other interns in the same manner.

In her role as Clinical Director, Hanrahan designs and maintains the training programs, supervises all interns and trainees and counsels low economic clients. The Hollywood Wilshire YMCA serves the Hollywood community with an emphasis on children. In addition to serving clients in the YMCA clinics, Hanrahan and her staff counsel students at local elementary schools.

Since rejoining the YMCA as Clinical Director in May 2006, Hanrahan finds her group supervision the most rewarding aspect of her job. "While my private practice keeps me busy, the opportunity to work at the YMCA, mentoring interns and receiving good feedback from them on how I assist their learning process, in turn helps me to be a better clinician. It truly is a give and take situation, where everyone benefits," she says passionately. Hanrahan has also grown through supporting interns in not just learning about psychological methods, but understanding the boundaries one needs as a clinician and human being.

Balancing a private practice and a fulltime position at the YMCA is not an easy task, but if you ask Hanrahan, both opportunities are adventures of a lifetime.*2

This issue of the "Colleague" highlights alumni and students who are undertaking the important job of building international connections and working abroad. I think this shows not only the incredible value that our scholar-practioner programs have for our individual students and local populations, but the way that this value is amplified when our alumni reach beyond the borders of this country to collaborate as part of a global community.*2
