Mayor Goodman encourages Asian community to work for the elegancy of Las Vegas By Tiffany ChangMayor Oscar Goodman of Las Vegas was honored as the Kenote Speaker in a dinner party for a special tribute to him by the Asian community organized by CAN-DO (Concerned Asians for Nevada Developmental Organization). The event was held in the Harbor Palace Seafood Restaurant in Chinatown Plaza on October 17, 2000. The dinner party was crowded with more than 200 participants included Justices of the Supreme Court Myron Leavitt, Nancy Becker; District Judge Mark Denton; Las Vegas Municipal Court Judges Michelle Fitzpatric, Jessie Walsh, Besty Kolkoski, Clark County School Board Trustee Lois Tarkanian, government officials, community leaders, business owners, professionals, among others. Dr. R. D. Prabhu, Chairman of CAN-DO, chaired the event. Dr. Peter Lok was the Event Coordinator. The Hosts included: David Amesbury, Anil Batra, Henda Chau, Steven Kwon, Dolly DeLeon, Leonie Domingo, Larry Espinueva, Clyde Hogan, Michael Khanna, Ben Kim, Sae Eun Lee, Steven Lee, Ann Melton, R. D. Prabhu, Tonie Sison, Ben Torres, Joey Villaflor, Rita Vaswani, Roddy Wong, and Saniel Yung. The Mayor was accompanied by Ann Melton to shake hand with each and every one of the Asian people. Justice of the Supreme Court and Fellow of Washington Business and Technology Institute Nancy Becker, and Judges Walsh and Kolkoski also shaked hand and chatted with all the 40 Chinese people and others being invited. The whole party full with social warmth and good communication. Besides the hosts being introduced one by one with each of their titles of organizations, every coordinator was also introduced with their organizations in representing the entire population of the pan Asian and Pacific communties. The event was successful under the emphasis both of the persons paying the money and coordinating the attendants by the ideal from Dr. Peter Lok and Dr. R.D. Prabhu. Dr. Joey Villaflor, Tonie Sison, Ben Toress, Dolly DeLeon, Ann Melton, Rita Vaswani, among others also played good roles to effectute the processing. The Mayor was born in Philadephia and received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He has an extensive Record of defending the Constitutional rights of all citizens. The driving forces of his legal career are the principles of freedom and justice. He has spent his entire career assuring that government action is just. He has been recognized for his distinguished legal career by being named one of the "Fifteen Best Trial Lawyers in America" by the National Law Journal and listed annually in the "Best Lawyer in America." His leadership styles and skills impressed his peers and scholars who selected him to serve as past President of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, a Fellow of the American Board of Criminal Lawyers, Executive Advisor of Washington Business and Technology Institute, among others. His extensive knowledge of the law, brilliant legal strategies and charisma were profiled in a British documentary on his life as well as in numerous television programs, books, and films. Elected as Mayor in June 1999, Goodman lead one of the fastest growing cities in the United States into the next millenium. He is committed to preserving Las Vegas' status as the "most Livable City in America." "I've raised a family in Las Vegas and built a successful law practice here. Now, I want my legacy to include building a community where future generations will have even more opportunities and advantages to live a prosperous life," said the mayor who moved to Las Vegas in 1963. Mayor Goodman is a lifelong friend of the community. He and his family believe in education. He and his wife Carolyn helped created one of the finest educational institutions in Southern Nevada. Carolyn is the Founder and President of the Board of the Meadows School. It is the only non-profit, non-sectarian private school in Nevada. During his bright speech on his administrative policy and development, the Mayor announced and emphasized his constructive perspectives that, "I promise you that you will have a voice in our government. Moreover, an Asian Center has been on scheduled to be built in Downtown, Las Vegas with beautiful design and good facilities." Thunders of applause from all the guests and Asian people brought a climax of this Event in greeting and tributing to our brilliant leader__ Mayor Oscar Goodman, who had his landslide victory as Las Vegas Mayor in the elction of 1999 with all these people of Asian Community through the great and cooperative effort and wisdom. |  | |
