To Whom It May Concern:

I watched in horror these past several days like so many other
Nevadans,
Americans and friends in the international community the results of
great
devastation from the earthquake and tsunami in the Indian Ocean
countries. My
heartfelt concern goes out to those families experiencing loss during
this
recent disaster in Southeast Asia including Thailand amongst others.

I called Dr. Tony Lei this morning and was inspired that through Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI)
our
concern for the Thai people could be shared through the local Chinese
newspaper.

I understand that "Next Weekly" is a Chinese newspaper that
emphasizes the
importance of literature and education to its enthusiastic readers and
has the
largest circulation amongst six Chinese newspapers in the southwest
United
States.

Again, let me express my deeply felt sorrow for the people in affected
countries in Southeast Asia; you are in our prayers and relief efforts.

Most Sincerely,

Valerie E Weber

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., took office on Tuesday as the Senate's top Democrat, proposing to work with President Bush and Republicans "to make this country a better place," but readying to fight on matters where the offer may fall flat.

"There are bipartisan opportunities for us," Reid said in his maiden speech as Senate minority leader. "I speak on behalf of 45 Democrats. We are here with our arms open to work with the administration, the (House) speaker and the (Senate) Republican leader to accomplish things for this country."

Reid said he and Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., were working to identify issues on which the parties might cooperate, such as renewal of highway legislation that would distribute billions of dollars to the states.

But, Reid said, "I also understand there will be times when we will not agree, and each of us will have to stand up for what we believe." Democrats and Republicans were scheduled to convene separate conferences today to strategize on divisive issues such as Social Security overhaul and confirmations for some of the president's more conservative judicial nominees.

As Congress convened for a new two-year session, Reid, 65, renewed his oath of office for a fourth six-year term, with 33 other senators who were elected in November. Escorted by Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., in a Senate ceremony, Reid was sworn in by Vice President Dick Cheney.

Nevada's three U.S. House members, Republicans Jim Gibbons and Jon Porter and Democrat Shelley Berkley, also were installed for new office terms during a separate House ceremony.

In his speech afterwards, Reid said, "Americans are counting on us to make the right decisions" on health care, Social Security, education and the environment.

U. S. Congresswoman Shelley Berkley Succeeds in Adding Land Transfer for New Southern Nevada VA Medical Complex to Omnibus Spending Bill
Will Provide Approx. 150 Acres for Hospital, Long Term Care Facility & Outpatient Clinic*1
By Office of Congresswoman Shelley Berkley

[November 19, 2004]
(Washington, DC -- November 19, 2004) U. S. Representative Shelley Berkley*2 (D-NV) today successfully added legislative language to an omnibus spending bill that will provide 147 acres of land in southern Nevada for the construction of a new full-service VA hospital, outpatient clinic and long term care facility.

揂ttaching this land transfer to a must pass spending bill ensures that the acreage selected for our new VA medical complex will be available in the very near future. As a member of the Veterans Affairs Committee, I have worked tirelessly to see that southern Nevada has the needed facilities to provide top-notch care for our growing population of veterans, Berkley said. 揜ather than wait for a stand-alone bill to work its way through the next Congress, I moved quickly to have legislative language added to the omnibus package. Now that this land transfer is a part of the spending package, it is all but certain to become law. The sooner we get the land, the sooner we can break ground and begin construction.

Berkley worked closely over the past weeks with Senators Reid (D) and Ensign (R) and the other members of Nevada抯 Congressional Delegation to gather bipartisan support for inclusion of the land transfer language in the omnibus package.

"This project is a thank-you to all those brave men and women who served our nation in uniform and an investment in the future to meet the needs of our newly created veterans from Afghanistan and Iraq, Berkley said. "Our veterans need a single, convenient, accessible campus where they can receive high-quality health care.

A campus to house the trio of new medical facilities will be constructed in Berkley's congressional district near the Las Vegas beltway and Pecos Road, in fast-growing North Las Vegas. As a result of Berkley抯 efforts, land for the complex valued at $30 million will be transferred from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to the VA at no cost, once the omnibus spending bill is signed.

In addition to her work on transferring the parcel from BLM to the VA, Berkley secured $25 million in funding this Congress to carry out the advance planning necessary for construction of the medical complex. The new VA medical campus is needed to address the shortage of health care services available for veterans in southern Nevada who must currently rely on a series of temporary clinics that were designed to take the place of the A.D. Guy Clinic, which was closed in 2002.

and the pleasantness of one's friend
springs from his earnest counsel,"
