U. S. Congresswoman Shelley Berkley held a speech conference in Las Vegas By Cheryl Moss and Tiffany Chang U. S. Congresswoman Shelley held a speech conference on 'How We Save Social Security' at February 23, 2005 in Las Vegas. About 100 people attended the conference. Chief of Staff, Richard L. Urey; Tod J. Story, District Director; Jan Churchill, District Representative; and Gerri Schroder, District Representative/Grants Researcher from the Office of U. S. Congresswoman Shelley Berkley also presented. Many organizational and community leaders in Nevada including Dr. Tony Lei, President of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) were invited to participate.*1Congresswoman Shelley Berkley pointed out three things on her topic about "Privatizing Social Security: President Bush's Guaranteed Gamble". (1) Privatizing Social Security Cuts Monthly Benefits. (2) President's Plan Makes the Problem Worse. (3) America Would Be Forced to Borrow Nearly $5 Trillion From Foreign Countries. Shelley told the attendants to know the facts about Private Social Security Accounts: (1) a. The plan is not voluntary. b. The plan taxes 70% of an acoount. (2) Accounts will dwindle leaving little to pass along. (3) You won't control your own money. The participants of the conference showed high interest on Shelley's speech. Many of them raised important questions. Shelley answered promptly and significantly. The discussion was held on Wednesday, February 23, 2005 at 10:00 a. m. at the Cambridge Recreation Center, 3930 Cambridge Room D in Las Vegas, Nevada. Light refreshments were served at the party. The follwing is some introduction about U.S. Congresswoman Shelley Berkley by WBTI through Google.com, Aol.com, Reviewjournal.com, among others:*2 U. S. Congresswoman Shelley Berkley was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in November, 1998. Shelley represents constituents living in the First Congressional District of Nevada, including residents of Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, and unincorporated areas in Clark County. The District annually records the largest population increase in the nation. U. S. Congresswoman Shelley Berkley has A Lifetime of Commitment to Nevada. She has lived in Las Vegas for over four decades. Shelley has a deep sense of commitment to give back to the community that opened the doors of opportunity for her. She also has never forgotten that her family headed west seeking a better life, and found it in Las Vegas. She completed junior high and high school in Las Vegas, then went on to become the first member of her family to attend college when she enrolled in UNLV. Elected Student Body President, 1971-1972, she graduated with honors and a B.A. in Political Science from UNLV in 1972. After earning her law degree at the University of San Diego School of Law in 1976, she returned to Las Vegas to begin her career. U. S. Congresswoman Shelley Berkley has successfully sought appointments that enable her to meet the needs of Southern Nevada, since she swore in as a Member of Congress on January 6, 1999. Shelley is a former Vice Chair of the Nevada University and Community College System Board of Regents. Appointed to the Board in 1990 by the Governor, she was then twice elected as a Regent by Las Vegas-area voters. She completed her second term on the Board in 1998. Throughout her tenure, Shelley worked to keep higher education in Nevada affordable and accessible to all qualified students. This bright lady has devoted her energies to charitable and civic efforts ever since she was a teenager. Her work and ideas have contributed to many of Southern Nevada’s successes. On February 23, 2004, U. S. Congresswoman Shelley Berkley wrote Dr. and Mrs. Tony Lei that,"Thank you for your generous contribution to my re-election campaign. I greatly appreciate your support. Please know that your help makes a significant difference. I look forward to continuing my service in Congress and shall endeavor to serve in the manner that merits your confidence in me."*3 Shelley Berkley is born a leader. Shelley is an educated leader. Shelley is a prctical and bright leader since her college life. She received her juris doctorate degree from San Deigo Law School. She was the former Regent of University and Colleges of Nevada. She has been Executive Advisor for Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) since 1996.*4 Her successful leadership both good in work performance and human relations has won all her assistants' and followers' full and sincere respects. In order to celebrate Shelley Berkley's winning as U. S. Congresswoman, elected as a member of the International Relations Committee (IRC) of the Congress, and Dr. Tony Lei as her Senior Advisor; Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) and Chinese American Academic Association of Nevada (CAAAN) established the "Literature and Academic Forum" ("LAF") in 1999. It is brought to you now by Las Vegas Review-Journal's reviewjournal.com through the section of "LAF5"*5 (now continues in "Social & Community") at: http://communitylink.reviewjournal.com/lvrj/wbti. At the time when Shelley was elected as the Member of IRC, she told Las Vegas Review-Journal that to promote the tourism, trade, and investment with foriegn countries for Nevada and our states is her primary interest. Her emphasis is enhancing the 2004 mission of WBTI: (1). To encourage and promote academic research, community service, humane spirit, and educational programs. (2). To launch and participate events and projects for the development and cooperation of tourism, education, business, and culture. We are pleased to welcome her good wishes to all our citizens, residents, and visitors of Nevada that "I look forward to continuing my service in Congress and shall endeavor to serve in the manner that merits your confidence in me." WBTI was honored by China Business Chain, Inc. "Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart, and the pleasantness of one's friend springs from his earnest counsel," Proverbs 27:9 of the Bible taught us; and "He who loves a pure heart and whose speech is gracious will have the king for his friend," Proverb 22:11 of the Bible inspired us again. Shelley's popularlity is arising from her effective production for public service and good personal traits by nature and sincerity. Shelley Berkley is an Adjunct Professor of Administrative Strategies of the Graduate School of Business and Public Administration (GSBPA) of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI).*6 U. S. Congresswoman Shelley Berkley wrote Dr. Tony Lei that,*7 "Dear Tony: It is with great pride, pleasure, gratitude and relief that I write this letter of thanks to you for your support in the 2004 election. ........................................ I am very proud of the fact that I ran my campaign based on my record of accomplishments and on the issues confronting our nation and the people I represent in Southern Nevada. As I head back to Washington, I am very mindful of the challenges facing our great country and the confidence you have placed in me to help formulate meaningful and thoughtful solutions to confront these challenges. I shall endeavor to conduct myself and this nation's business in a manner that will make you proud that you supported me in the election." ----------------------------------------- References *1. Thursday, February 17, 2005 Copyright @ Las Vegas Review-Journal U. S. Congresswoman Shelley Berkley bill raises vets' burial benefit STEPHENS WASHINGTON BUREAU Shelley Berkley (Photo.) WASHINGTON -- A bill Rep. Shelley Berkley introduced Wednesday in Congress would boost burial benefits for military veterans and keep payments on pace with inflation. Government benefits have eroded over years, with families facing larger shares of out-of-pocket costs for funerals and cemetery fees, said Berkley, D-Nev. The bill would raise burial benefits from $2,000 to $4,100 for those who die of service-related disabilities. Benefits for veterans with nonservice-connected disabilities would go from $200 to $1,270. Burial plot allowances would increase through the legislation, with all the benefits adjusted annually for inflation. "It has been more than 25 years since the last increase in burial benefits for those veterans without a service-connected disability, and today the funds provided cover only 6 percent of the average burial cost," Berkley said in a statement. "We can end this erosion in benefits once and for all." Berkley, a member of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, last week was named the ranking Democrat on the disability and memorial affairs subcommittee that will review the bill. 22222222222222 8888888888888888888888888888 777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777 ****************************************************

I will continue to fight for our people and country By Shelley BerkleyBERKLEY E-NEWS FROM THE HALLS OF CONGRESS, DIRECTLY TO YOU As the 109th Congress re-convenes in Washington next week, I want to reaffirm my commitment to be your voice in the U.S. House of Representatives. There is much to do in the year ahead. We must work to secure democracy in Iraq, stabilize and strengthen the U.S. economy, reduce the deficit, promote retirement security for all Americans, address the rising cost of health care, establish a sound energy policy that reduces our dependency on foreign oil, improve educational opportunities and resources for our children, and safeguard our families and communities. I will also continue fighting for issues important to Nevada-stopping the nuclear waste dump at Yucca Mountain, ensuring our local veterans have a full service medical center, expanding and improving our transportation system, and making certain that Southern Nevada receives the homeland security assistance it deserves. On May 15, 2005, Las Vegas will celebrate its centennial. I look forward to joining with you as we commemorate the first 100 years of the world's most dynamic city. Las Vegas remains the fastest growing metropolitan area in the United States and more than 36 million visitors are expected this year alone. When I moved to the Valley four decades ago, it would have been hard to imagine the success and prosperity our city in the desert enjoys today. We enter our second century with unlimited promise and high hopes for all that the future holds. Don't forget to sign-up for my e-newsletter, which I provide as a free service to my constituents. This electronic bulletin will be e-mailed directly to you and will contain timely updates on important legislation and information on issues that affect Southern Nevada and the nation. Please feel free to forward this message along to your friends and neighbors. Thank you and best wishes. I look forward to hearing from you soon and continuing to serve you. Sincerely, SHELLEY BERKLEY Member of Congress 66666666666666 88888888888888888888888888 777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777 *******************************************************

U. S. Congresswoman Shelley Berkley Succeeds in Adding Land Transfer for New Southern Nevada VA Medical Complex to Omnibus Spending Bill Will Provide Approx. 150 Acres for Hospital, Long Term Care Facility & Outpatient Clinic*1 By Office of Congresswoman Shelley Berkley[November 19, 2004] (Washington, DC -- November 19, 2004) U. S. Representative Shelley Berkley (D-NV) today successfully added legislative language to an omnibus spending bill that will provide 147 acres of land in southern Nevada for the construction of a new full-service VA hospital, outpatient clinic and long term care facility. “Attaching this land transfer to a must pass spending bill ensures that the acreage selected for our new VA medical complex will be available in the very near future. As a member of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, I have worked tirelessly to see that southern Nevada has the needed facilities to provide top-notch care for our growing population of veterans,” Berkley said. “Rather than wait for a stand-alone bill to work its way through the next Congress, I moved quickly to have legislative language added to the omnibus package. Now that this land transfer is a part of the spending package, it is all but certain to become law. The sooner we get the land, the sooner we can break ground and begin construction.” Berkley worked closely over the past weeks with Senators Reid (D) and Ensign (R) and the other members of Nevada’s Congressional Delegation to gather bipartisan support for inclusion of the land transfer language in the omnibus package. "This project is a thank-you to all those brave men and women who served our nation in uniform and an investment in the future to meet the needs of our newly created veterans from Afghanistan and Iraq,” Berkley said. "Our veterans need a single, convenient, accessible campus where they can receive high-quality health care.” A campus to house the trio of new medical facilities will be constructed in Berkley's congressional district near the Las Vegas beltway and Pecos Road, in fast-growing North Las Vegas. As a result of Berkley’s efforts, land for the complex valued at $30 million will be transferred from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to the VA at no cost, once the omnibus spending bill is signed. In addition to her work on transferring the parcel from BLM to the VA, Berkley secured $25 million in funding this Congress to carry out the advance planning necessary for construction of the medical complex. The new VA medical campus is needed to address the shortage of health care services available for veterans in southern Nevada who must currently rely on a series of temporary clinics that were designed to take the place of the A.D. Guy Clinic, which was closed in 2002. ----------------------------------------- Reference *1. Office of Congresswoman Shelley Berkley. BERKLEY E-NEWS FROM THE HALLS OF CONGRESS, DIRECTLY TO YOUBerkley Delivers 147 Acres for New Southern Nevada VA Medical Complex President Bush is expected to sign legislation soon that will provide nearly 150 acres of land to house a new VA hospital, outpatient clinic and long-term care facility to serve the Las Vegas Valley. Shelley successfully added a provision to the omnibus appropriations package passed before Thanksgiving that transfers the $30 million Bureau of Land Management parcel to the VA at no cost to taxpayers. As a member of the Veterans' Affairs Committee, Shelley has worked hand-in-hand with VA Secretary Anthony Principi to win approval for the new hospital, clinic and nursing home, which is needed to meet the health care needs of more than 200,000 local veterans. Shelley has also been instrumental in securing $25 million in federal funding for design work on the trio of facilities and she is anxious to see ground broken at the site which is located near the Las Vegas Beltway and Pecos Road. Construction on the medical complex is slated to begin in 2006. Transportation Projects Will Help Businesses Grow and Valley Residents on the Go Southern Nevada's transportation system is a key to our economic success and an important component in maintaining the quality of life our community has come to expect. Shelley is helping to modernize and expand our transportation network with important new projects and additional federal resources. Among the transportation items funded by Shelley in the Omnibus Appropriations bill are clean natural gas buses for the City of Las Vegas, work to improve the Las Vegas Beltway, upgrades to McCarran's air traffic control tower and enhanced runway lighting at the North Las Vegas and Henderson Airports. Despite months of negotiations, GOP leaders in Congress have yet to resolve conflicts among key Republican lawmakers that have stalled a six-year federal transportation bill. Once passed, the legislation will provide increased funding for Nevada airports, roads, highways and public transportation systems. Berkley Votes No on $800 Billion Debt Increase, Seeks Pay as You Go Fiscal Policy Despite record deficits, Congressional Republicans recently approved an $800 billion increase in the amount that the U.S. can borrow. The move raises the total national debt ceiling to more than $8.2 trillion. Shelley voted no to the debt limit increase, and yes on restoring the concept of Pay-As-You-Go budgeting or PAYGO. Such a move would require that programs in the future be funded through budget cuts or new sources of revenue. Such PAYGO provisions helped to successfully eliminate the national debt under President Bill Clinton. Shelley believes that future generations of Americans will literally pay the price if the current spending spree, led by the GOP-led Congress and President Bush, is not brought under control. Yucca Mountain Budget Frozen for 2005, DOE Will Not File for License In an about face, the Department of Energy (DOE) has announced it will not submit an application to move forward on Yucca Mountain this year. The news comes as the latest budget fight over funding for the proposed dump has come to an end. Rather than provide the record funding called for by President Bush, spending on Yucca Mountain has been frozen at last year's level. DOE's decision to scrap its plans to move forward on a license signals mounting problems at Yucca Mountain, including the recent court ruling in Nevada's favor that found radiation standards established under the pro-Yucca Bush Administration were not based on science and failed to protect families living in the Silver State. Know Your Limits This Holiday Season The Holidays are a time for fun, friends and family, but they can turn deadly when drinking and driving are involved. Shelley, who serves as a co-chair of the Congressional Stop DUI Caucus, wants all drivers to stay safe and to know their limits. At a recent event on Capitol Hill, Shelley teamed with the Century Council to raise awareness about new, tougher DUI laws in many states, including Nevada. As part of the effort, holiday revelers are encouraged to visit www.b4udrink.org. This website contains information for individuals on evaluating their blood alcohol level, which may be used to determine whether or not a driver is impaired. Shelley would like to remind everyone that, "The holiday season is full of fun and good cheer, but it can turn to tragedy when drinking and driving are involved. Drunk driving is illegal, but it is also avoidable. Know your own limits, exercise personal responsibility and remind your friends and family, neighbors and colleagues that it is not safe to drive if they've had too much to drink at a holiday gathering. Together, we can play our part in a nationwide effort to reduce the number of lives lost to this preventable tragedy." U.S. Congresswoman Shelley Berkley Announced New Partnership for America's Future By Office of the U.S. Representative and PAI of WBTI*1New Plan To Address Challenges of Middle Class Families September 22, 2004 (Washington, DC -- September 22, 2004) U.S. Representative Shelley Berkley*2 (D-NV) joined other House Democrats and Americans from across the country today in unveiling the New Partnership for America's Future. The new agenda was developed by House Democrats to address the needs of today's middle class families, including safe communities, good jobs and affordable health care. "The Partnership for America's Future is based on six core values: prosperity, national security, fairness, community, opportunity and accountability. House Democrats have crafted proposals to improve homeland security, reduce health care costs, support our veterans, create jobs and address the challenges families face each day. Democrats are united and we are committed to taking the bold steps necessary to strengthen the middle class," Berkley said. "Security in our hometowns means first responders who are well trained and well equipped, and Democrats will provide the funding to ensure our police and firefighters can get the job done," Berkley said. "And we will expand cargo screening for our airlines and at American seaports and continue to strengthen our border security." "These policies will mean help for families in Las Vegas and across our nation struggling with the rising cost of health care, for seniors who cannot afford high-priced prescription medicines and for individuals who lack access to insurance. And it will mean fairness for our veterans still waiting for an end to the disabled veterans tax and waiting in line to access the VA benefits they were promised in return for their service to the nation," said Berkley. Berkley joined with fellow House Democrats in a rally on the steps of the U.S. Capitol this morning to introduce the New Partnership for American's Future, which includes a strong emphasis on homeland security. ---------------------------------------------------- References *1.
