【本報記者王善言爾灣報導】爾灣加大華裔教授余凡(Albert Yee，如圖左)及李金忠(Chin Lee，如圖右)，日前與該校另16位教授，被「湯姆森科學公司」(Thomson Scien-tific)列名為過去20年出版的學術報告最常被學術界及業界引用的學者。 湯姆森公司為獨立公司，專門在世界各地提供整合的資訊及著作給科學、會計、高等教育等領域的人士使用。該公司最近公布過去20年在專業領域上論文最常被引用的前250名學者，這些專業領域包括工程、化學、數學、心理等。 近年來聲譽漸隆的爾灣加大共有18位學者上榜，分別橫跨神經科學、基因科學、電腦、工程、化學、數學、材料科學、微生物、環境學等領域。其中有三位學者為亞裔，除余凡與李金忠外，尚有任教數學系的李彼得(Peter Li)。 來自台灣的李金忠為工程系教授，教書生涯已有22年。他指出，他發表的論文無數，也指導不少學生發表論文，他們的論文常被學術界及業界參考引用。據瞭解，如引用自己的論文，將不被湯姆森計算在最常被引用之論文的次數內。 李金忠為台灣交通大學電子工程學系畢業，擁有卡內基美倫大學電機工程博士學位。 來自香港的余凡目前為「加州電訊及資訊科技研究院」爾灣加大分院院長。 他指出，他不清楚湯姆森公司是如何遴選上榜學者，但湯姆森歷史相當悠久，在學術界相當具權威。他每年平均發表七至八篇學術論文。 余凡擁有柏克萊加大化學博士學位，他是三前年應聘到爾灣加大服務。他認為，爾灣加大為一所很有希望和前途的大學。稍早他曾任教於密西根大學，並擔任密大材料科學系系主任，也曾擔任新加坡「材料工程研究院」院長。 余凡目前並從事最尖端的奈米技術研究。 [2006-05-08] 11111111111111111

崑曲經典改編「青春版」 風靡兩岸三地 陽春白雪歷久彌新 將與加州觀眾見面 [[[談起崑曲，白先勇神采飛揚。他將把崑曲經典「牡丹亭」帶來美國，與觀眾分享。（本報記者陳青攝）]]] 本報記者陳青／專訪 過去兩年來，著名作家白先勇風塵僕僕地把崑曲經典「牡丹亭」，帶到台灣、香港和中國大陸各地上演，讓曲高和寡、幾乎奄奄一息的中國古典劇作，重新煥發青春氣息。很多美國華人都在期盼:何時可以在美國看到這齣讓兩岸三地傾倒的「牡丹亭」？ 從繁忙演出活動回到加州聖塔芭芭拉小歇的白先勇說，今年9月他會把這齣過去兩年在兩岸三地上演72場、有十萬觀眾欣賞過的青春版「牡丹亭」，帶到加州來，分別在柏克萊加大、爾灣加大、洛杉磯加大和聖塔芭芭拉市演出。 白先勇的家在柏樹掩映、茶花環繞的清幽隱谷中，客廳的牆壁上，懸掛著父親白崇禧將軍留下的典雅優美古字畫；茶几上有古樸端莊的瓷器，擺設錯落有致，處處散發著中國文人的雅趣。 半個多世紀前，與中國一同經歷了近代歷史巨變的白先勇，隨家人從中國大陸遷到台灣，又轉輾到美國留學、教書，濃郁的文化鄉愁，成就了他的「台北人」等傳世小說和散文作品。 在聖塔芭芭拉加大教書29年退休後，那份濃郁的文化鄉愁和文化使命感，驅使他重新回到兩岸三地，尋找推動文化傳承的更大舞台。 談起這兩年多來在兩岸三地，尤其中國大陸大學生中火紅的青春版「牡丹亭」，溫文儒雅的白先勇頓時神采飛揚。 「台北人」小說集中的「遊園驚夢」篇，自然是一個引子。2001年，聯合國教科文組織把崑曲定為「人類非口述非物質文化遺產」後，加強了白先勇為五百年歷史的崑曲興滅繼絕的使命感。他一直思考崑曲在現代社會萎縮的原因。崑曲是最難，但也是最美的表演藝術，但演員老了，觀眾也老化，崑曲也就漸漸脫離現代觀眾的審美觀。 2003年，白先勇應邀到香港，向1500名中學生講崑曲，這對從未教過中學生的他，想到了「崑曲中的男歡女愛」這個有趣的切入點，還自蘇州崑劇院請來一群年輕演員示範。沒想到，扮演「柳夢梅」的小青年俞玖林，正是他多年來心中追尋的柳夢梅。隨後到又到劇院「小蘭花」隊找到了他心目中扮演杜麗娘的沈豐英。 白先勇也因此有了靈感，既然「牡丹亭」是最動人的一則「愛情神話」，由充滿青春氣息及才貌俊麗的年輕演員來擔綱，而製作成青春版的「牡丹亭」，一定也能打動e世代的心。 在文化界有強烈號召力的白先勇，集合了兩岸三地優秀的製作、編劇、舞台設計、服裝設計和表演人才，把「牡丹亭」打造成連續三天的精美藝術品，並感召了有同樣文化使命感的企業家贊助。2004年，青春版「牡丹亭」在台北國家劇院首次面世，一砲而紅。 雖然在台港和大陸商業演出成績斐然，但白先勇的目標是要讓年輕一代瞭解崑曲、愛上崑曲。因此，他正在努力把「牡丹亭」帶入大學校園。 白先勇自己也沒想到，青春版「牡丹亭」有這麼大的魅力，演一場，轟動一場，學生們也跟著「瘋」一場。兩年多演下來，很多人說，崑曲的觀眾年齡層下降了30歲。 這次回美安排演出的白先勇表示，青春版「牡丹亭」所以變成兩岸三地難得一見的文化盛事，他相信是因為中國人看了一世紀西方的表演，才發現中國自己竟也有那麼美的藝術，是中國傳統的精華，牽動了觀眾的心。他希望該劇在加州上演，讓華人也有機會欣賞到既古典、又現代的中國表演藝術。 [2006-05-07] 666666666666666666

用真心追隨智慧 視挫折為學習機會 【本報系記者何佩儒報導】Google全球副總裁李開復昨28日與台北網路家庭董事長詹宏志對談，兩人面對在職場上的轉變，都是追隨「真心」及「直覺」，而且視挫折為學習的機會。李開復在聯經出版社主辦的「世界領袖論壇」上，以「與成功對話—做最好的自己」為題，與詹宏志對談。 會場人流大量湧入，許多青年學子及在職的上班族，都希望一睹Google這家全球搜尋引擎龍頭廠的高階主管風采，現場擠進了超過800位聽講者。李開復沉穩的台風、幽默的言談，加上許多精彩的實例，吸引現場的聽講者。 李開復表示，選擇成功的七種智慧，包括用中庸拒絕極端、用理智反對片面、用務實發揮影響、用冷靜掌控抉擇、用學習累積經驗、用自覺端正態度、用真心追隨智慧。 李開復回憶，他在1984年，曾經短暫出任教職，當時教導幾個高三的天才學生，他還特別拿大四的課程來教他們，結果被學生評為「講課最差的教師」。學生給他的評語是：「上課都不看學生，如果他看一下，就知道大家都在睡覺。」經過這次挫折，李開復積極學習溝通的技巧。 在用「冷靜掌控抉擇」上，李開復說，要懂得放棄才有收穫，例如他在大學時，也放棄學了一年的法律，造就他後來在資訊業20年來的研發成果；去年他放棄在微軟工作了七年的工作，因為他覺得自己在微軟已不再進步，同時希望能夠回到大陸，另外Google的創新模式，也非常吸引他，不過「我不知道這樣的放棄，會有何種成果，希望兩年後我再來演講，可以告訴大家」。 至於詹宏志，是個與李開復完全不同類型的人，詹宏志說：「李開復用中庸拒絕極端，而我向來是以極端拒絕中庸。」形容自己每次換工作，可能是因為不喜歡老闆，基於衝動而換，等到自己當了老闆，成為別人換工作的原因，才開始沉澱。 李開復認為要用冷靜掌控抉擇，詹宏志則是「用衝動抉擇，以冷靜彌補」。兩人的交集，是在「追隨真心」。李開復認為，在選擇成功的七種智慧中，他認為最重要的是用真心追隨智慧；詹宏志也強調學習的重要性，尤其網路發達，只要有心，學習的代價已相對低廉。 [2006-04-29] 11111111111111111

連膺美國藝術科學院、國家科學院院士 【本報記者徐敏子柏克萊報導】柏克萊加大物理系教授暨空間科學實驗室主任林白中（Robert Peichung Lin，見圖）25日獲選美國科學與工程界最高榮譽的國家科學院（ The National Academy of Sci-ences）院士；林白中24日也獲選另一崇高榮譽的美國藝術科學院（ American Academy of Arts and Sciences)院士。 國家科學院25日發布了72位新科院士及18位外籍院士名單，美國藝術科學院24日公布了175位新科院士名單。國家科學院是美國政府科學與技術官方智囊團，成立至今已經132年，目前共有2013位院士。 美國藝術科學院由數學、物理學、生物學、社會學、人文及藝術、公共事業及商界菁英組成，本年度新科院士中包括老布希總統和柯林頓。兩院新院士的產生均由現任院士提名、選舉決定。國家科學院主席、爾灣加大校長西瑟戎（Ralph Cicerone）表示，「入選科學院院士是美國科學及工程界最高榮譽之一」。 今年64歲的林白中在中國廣西出生，四歲時隨父母移居英國，七歲時移民美國，1962年從加州技術學院獲得學士學位，1967年獲柏克萊加大博士學位，至今一直在柏克萊加大從事天文物理研究。 林白中的研究工作主要是設計空間科學試驗標準，他從事空間物理研究40年來，設計過無數試驗設備及試驗標準，其中不少在空間飛船上使用，火星上有一個試驗設備，標準也是由他設計的。 林白中說，國家科學院和藝術科學院都是由同行的院士提名、選舉的，兩天連獲兩項崇高榮譽，說明自己長期以來的研究工作受到同行的重視和肯定，這令他感到十分欣慰。今年10月7日，他將前往位於麻州劍橋的藝術科學院接受院士證書；而國家科學院的儀式將於明年4月在華府舉行。 [2006-04-26] 666666666666666

Leadership is love --- a way to reaching a goal

I searched high and low. I spoke with authority. People listened. But alas, there was one who was wiser than I, and they follow that individual.
I sought to inspire confidence, but the crowd responded, "Why should I trust you?"
I postured, and I assumed the look of leadership with a countenance that flowed with confidence and pride. But many passed me by and never noticed my air of elegance.
I ran ahead of the others, pointed the way to new heights. I demonstrated that I knew the road to greatness. And then I looked back, and I was alone.
"What shall I do?" I queried. "I've tried hard and used all that I know." And I sat down and pondered long.
And then, I listened to the voices around me. And I heard what the group was trying to accomplish. I rolled up my sleeves and joined in the work.
As we worked, I asked, "Are we all together in what we want to do and how to get the job done?"
And we thought together, and we fought together, and we struggled towards our goal.
I found myself encouraging the fainthearted. I sought the ideas of those too shy to speak out. I taught those who had little skill. I praised those who worked hard. When our task was completed, one of the group turned to me and said, "This would not have been done but for your leadership."
At first, I said, "I didn't lead. I just worked with the rest." And then I understood, leadership is not a goal. It's a way to reaching a goal.
I lead best when I help others to go where we've decide to go. I lead best when I help others to use themselves creatively. I lead best when I forget about myself as leader and focus on my group...their needs and their goals.
To lead is to serve...to give...to achieve together.

【中時電子報 】 林天送生老病死是人人必須面對的課題，我們的肉體必終會衰老敗壞，但有人顯得特別蒼老，五十來歲時就像六七十歲的老阿公或老阿嬤，走動都有困難。最近的醫學研究發現：人的衰老腳步可以調整，改變一些生活方式與細節常常就可以使你更有活力。 ★基因影響體重 沖繩人瑞的研究發現，改善了飲食內容，注意日常的運動量，往往就能改變健康狀況，延長壽命。這些研究發現：生活方式與細節比基因重要。人類的基因組合解讀已全部完成，人的基因總數是三萬左右，基因是製造蛋白質的藍圖，蛋白質包括荷爾蒙、酵素、生長因素及結構單元。人體的生理運作是靠蛋白質來推動，而蛋白質的生產量是靠基因的表現能力，當基因不能做適當表現時，製造出過多或過少蛋白時，就會帶來疾病。你我之間的基因差別不會超過0.1%，故基因必須適時、適地做適量的表現是最為重要。 人的基因的表現能力會受到許多不同因素的影響，如生理、精神、環境等。在某種情況下，基因會下令給細胞進行自殺程序，如癌症(新聞、網站)的形成是細胞忘了進行自殺程序。基因也會在環境惡劣的情況，改變基因表現能力，如在饑餓或大災難時會調整某些基因的功能去應付外來的惡劣環境。 最近醫學研究發現：有250基因會影響一個人的體重，包括嗜吃基因，有肥胖基因的人是比較容易發胖，甚至「連喝水都會發胖」，但如果能調整生活方式與細節，如以節食(新聞、網站)及運動並行，仍然有可能避免肥胖。 ★節食與運動並行 控制體重的關鍵是要注意能量的收支平衡。人身體運作需要能量，故我每天必須從飲食中求補充，但當攝取的飲食能量多於身體的消耗量，這些多餘的能量會轉變成脂肪，增加你的腰圍。飲食的內容應該以低卡路里量為主，這與於阿金斯（Atkins）的高肉食減肥(新聞、網站)法不同。 又如果身體有足夠量的瘦體素，食慾會下降，而缺乏瘦體素時則會嗜食不厭，終究肥胖。肥胖者的瘦體素受體會被過多脂肪蓋住，對瘦體素的吸收有阻力，就如糖尿病患對胰島素的吸收有阻力，這就成了惡性循環。 節食並不是一件容易的事，人體為了應付外來環境的變化經常在做調整，當降低卡路里的攝取量時，身體也同時改變基因表現能力以期調整「基準靜態代謝效率」（Basal Metabolic Rate，簡稱BMR），BMR就像身體的自動溫度調節器決定一個人的卡路里消耗速率，故節食時也會同時降低BMR。我們必須同時做運動才能提高BMR，而達成卡路里的消耗。又BMR會隨著年齡的增長而下降，這也說明人一進入中、老年時，如果不常運動，那是註定會發胖的。（作者林天送為美國聖路易華盛頓大學教授） [2006 / 04 / 21 (星期五)] 111111111111111111

High school girls learn about work culture at three-day camp

Yang, a local high schooler whose family immigrated to the United States from China when she was 6, plans to launch an anesthesiology practice and work for Doctors Without Borders in rural China, Africa or South America. After she's had her fill of the medical world, Yang expects to leap into publishing, where she'd like to serve as an editor for a major book imprint. Yang's career trajectory might sound ambitious. But thanks to a crash course in business leadership, Yang has a firmer grasp on how to realize her myriad goals. Yang and about 20 other area high school girls recently attended the Girl Scouts of Frontier Council's Camp CEO, a three-day immersion in the corporate world. Campers spent a long weekend at the Frontier Council's Harris Avenue headquarters, where they met with local women business leaders from companies such as Sprint, SunWest Bank, MGM Mirage, Realty Executives and LF Harris & Co. General Contractors. The students received tips on networking, owning a business and managing personal finances. They also attended workshops on dressing appropriately for business and writing a resume, and took personality tests to assess how they'll work with people they meet on the job. Camp CEO culminated in product-in-a-box, an exercise that asked small groups of girls to develop a business idea based on the miscellaneous contents of a prepackaged container. Once they created their products -- which included a housecleaning robot, an office in a box and an all-purpose toy and game console -- the students had to write business plans with competitive analysis, product differentiation, pricing analysis, a human-resource strategy and startup budgets. The purpose, said Frontier Council Chief Executive Officer Patricia Miller, was to get high school girls to start thinking early about career success. "We want to help young girls look down the road a ways," Miller said. "As they get ready to leave high school and start college or enter business, we want them to be able to see what they have to do to move up the business ladder or own a company. Camp CEO gives them the opportunity to see what it took for other women to get where they are and understand how they can get there, too." For Yang, it was a mission accomplished. "All the women told us to follow our passions and have fun at what we're doing," said Yang, a senior at Advanced Technologies Academy who's heading off to Wellesley College in Massachusetts this fall to study bioscience and English literature. "There are so many pressures to do what your parents want you to do or to go for a job that pays a lot of money, because that offers stability. But you really have to think about where you want to go. Camp CEO will help me go for my dreams and not be afraid to fail. I'll keep those lessons with me for the rest of my life." Robin Schofield, a sophomore at Shadow Ridge High School, found out about Camp CEO through her mother, a troop leader for the Girl Scouts. Schofield signed up for the program for its educational potential; she found the tips on networking especially useful. "I really wanted to learn what it takes to run a business, and I wanted to learn how other women got to their positions," said Schofield, who aspires to start a career in computer engineering and transition into ownership of a horse-training business. "They told us that networking has a lot to do with their success. If you have people around you who know your skills, and if you're willing to take risks, others will help you move up in the business world." For Meg Pearson, fielding tips on writing a resume and mastering job interviews proved valuable. Pearson also picked up fresh leadership ideas that she'll take back to Green Valley High School, where she's a sophomore serving on the Student Council. "I would like to be a business executive, and coming (to Camp CEO) was a step on the right path," said Pearson, who is mulling careers in accounting and marketing. "We made bonds with new friends and we learned lessons we'll get to use in real-life situations." Frontier Council executives hope to offer those benefits to even more girls in 2007. They're planning a second installment of Camp CEO for a year from now, and they plan to boost participation to between 50 and 100 attendees by promoting the event through local chapters of Future Business Leaders of America and other entrepreneurship-oriented clubs. Taking part in the camp doesn't require membership in the Girl Scouts. Serving more girls will require additional community support. Camp CEO cost the Frontier Council about $10,000, most of which came from corporate sponsorships that started at $500. Miller said she's looking for additional sponsors for the 2007 Camp CEO; she's also seeking businesses willing to help defray charges for students who can't afford the $25 attendance fee. Camp CEO will also need speakers willing to discuss their career paths, as well as judge and advise product-in-a-box activities. "The girls who attend Camp CEO are really the cream of the crop. That they would give up a whole weekend to spend time bettering themselves is a testament to them," Miller said. "I'm guessing there are a lot more girls out there who could benefit from this as well." The executives who volunteered at Camp CEO said they believe the program has positive implications for the entire business community. Punam Mathur, senior vice president of corporate diversity and community affairs for MGM Mirage, counseled the students on the importance of professional integrity. Mathur called Camp CEO's participants "inspirational." "They're so young, and if they can refine their values and skills, they'll be in a much better position to rise to their full leadership potential," Mathur said. "The corporate scandals we've seen in America hurt the fabric of this country. If we have young people who focus on their character, convictions and values as much as they focus on developing skills and building knowledge, the nation will have much more effective future leaders." 1111111111111111

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS CARSON CITY -- Chinese laborers who helped to build the Virginia & Truckee Railroad in 1869 were honored Thursday at a Nevada State Railroad Museum event that focused on a $40 million revival of the V&T and a $50 million museum complex to commemorate the workers. Gov. Kenny Guinn, in remarks to Peng Keyu, consul general of the Chinese consulate in San Francisco, and others at the event, said the efforts of the laborers made it possible to complete the Comstock Lode-era short line in less than a year. Advertisement But Guinn said the workers, including many who hoped to "find mountains made of gold" in the West, instead faced "a mountain of barriers" in the form of discrimination. Guinn said the revived V&T will be a major tourist attraction, and the museum that will be linked to the train station here will honor the Chinese workers who built the old railroad. Peng said he hoped the two projects will help bring China and the United States closer and expressed appreciation for the effort to recognize the Chinese who built railroads throughout the West. 111111111111111

徐大麟認為投資的成功\與失敗都是短暫的，他最重視與感恩的是與沈悅的婚姻，與兩人共同建立的家庭。圖為年輕的徐大麟與沈悅步出結婚禮堂的一刻，攜手邁向未來的人生。(徐大麟提供)]]] 【本報記者高南心專訪】去年開始讓成千上萬中西遊客在萬里長城八達嶺上也可以喝到「星巴克咖啡」的徐大麟(見圖，本報記者高南心攝)，最近剛被美國「富比世」雜誌選為全美排名第18位的最佳科技創業投資家，也是全美國排名最前面的華裔人士。 漢鼎亞太近募五億美元 目前是「漢鼎亞太」(H&Q Pa-cific Asia)董事長的徐大麟（Dr. Ta-Lin Hsu）新近完成的亞太第五號成長基金（APGFV）與H&Q-NPS基金一號，為北亞地區募得五億美元，投資範圍包括日本、南韓與大中華地^在內的北亞市場。漢鼎亞太總共管理過19個基金，總額為21億美元。 若用一句話來形容他30多年來的美國移民生活，60出頭的徐大麟不假思索地說：「努力，努力，再努力。」對仍在奮鬥中的華人移民來講，這句話再平常不過了，但對被喻為「亞洲創投教父」的徐大麟，這樣一位早已事業有成，且於美國主流投資業界占有一席之地的創投家，仍以「努力，努力，再努力」來自我勉勵，並不常見，頗令人感到好奇。 重慶出生，台北成長的徐大麟，亦有台灣創投教父之稱，也是最早進入大陸市場的華人創投業者。他在1985年加入漢鼎，在台灣成立「漢通基金」，並創辦台灣漢鼎，是台灣第一家美式創投，漢鼎的第一個成功案子，就是享譽全球的宏碁。 徐大麟記得30多年前移民到美國時，第一個晚上住在洛杉磯，「我花了五美元住旅館，折合台幣兩百元（當時美元兌換台幣是1:40），在台灣可以吃好多碗牛肉麵，我覺得好可惜！」如今坐在矽谷高級住宅區阿瑟頓（Atherton）豪宅內，徐大麟對30多年前踏上美國土地的往事，記憶猶新。 全球奔波整天與錢為伍 「我第一次出國門，覺得好貴呀！心情上產生很大的震撼！」這件事，也開啟徐大麟對金錢價值新的認識，如今他從事的更是在全球奔波投資，整天與金錢為伍的創投家繁忙事業。 「但是，美國是充滿機會的地方，把握就有成功機會。」徐大麟深有所感地說：「機會就像火車一樣，這一班有機會，下一班也有機會，機會是無窮地、不斷地來。」 成功投資過宏碁、旺宏、華邦等電腦公司的漢鼎亞太，於六、七年前計畫開拓中國大陸的投資，發現與台灣投資的模式很不同。徐大麟在接受「世界日報30周年社慶」的「名人訪談」時說：「我們決定投資中國最具有潛力的消費性市場。幾經運作與布局，選擇投資星巴克咖啡（Starbucks），這是一種新的生活型態，不光是賣一杯咖啡而已。」1999年1月11日，漢鼎亞太把第一家星巴克咖啡帶進北京國貿大樓商圈，目前已擁有57家分店，除了故宮，去年更在長城八達嶺開設星巴克咖啡店，在大北京一帶掀起一股咖啡新生活文化。 徐大麟強調，在美奮鬥多年，他並未忘掉故鄉，且持續回饋鄉里，這是他身為僑民所能做的貢獻與最大的喜悅。 回想自己移民美國的年代，已經有不少機會了，今日的移民，機會更多、更廣泛。徐大麟說，當年移民最好的選擇是讀理工，不但可拿獎學金，畢業後容易找到工作，在美國立足。「現在的新移民，則有機會在政治、文化、慈善、傳媒、戲劇等發展，甚至對人權維護的抱負等」。 徐大麟強調，他特別要提到世界日報在報導社會回饋上所扮演的重要角色，30年來，世界日報支持華人社團與各項活動，讓華人之間有所聯繫，也鼓勵在美社團與僑民，「讓我們這一輩的僑民，多做一些好事」。 值得一提的是，二兒子徐牧衡今年剛好30歲，看著兒子長大成人，也看到世界日報的成長。「世界日報從開創與台灣新聞的連線、版面調整、邁向彩色印刷，以及到現在每天都看到當天的世界日報，而不是像過去看『昨天的歷史』等變革，世報不斷地在改革與進步」。徐大麟談到世界日報的每一個成長腳步的心情，不亞於數算自己兒子成長的每一個重要階段的喜悅。 事業有成歸功妻子支持 「投資的成功或失敗，其實都是短暫的」，徐大麟強調：「經歷事業的高潮、低點後，最值得的是，也是我一天到晚感謝的，是我與沈悅的婚姻。」 (系列完) [2006-02-26] 5555555555555555

杜紀川與孫大衛打造的金士頓公司，是全球最大的記憶體模組獨立製造商。(本報記者王善言攝)]]] 【本報記者王善言專訪】全球最大的記憶體模組獨立製造廠「金士頓科技公司」(Kingston Technology Company, Inc.)創辦人杜紀川(John Tu)，中國大陸出生、台灣長大、移民美國30多年。他與夥伴孫大衛(David Sun)在加州矽谷打造的企業，涉足兩岸三地及全球各地，展現的機動性和以員工為尊的獨特企業文化，使員工向心力極強，公司也快速成長，締造上億元營業佳績。 杜紀川2月16日宣布2005年的公司業績激增22%，首次衝破30億美元大關，是公司1987年成立以來最高的營收。 億元分紅 震驚業界 「金士頓」名聲響亮，部分原因是總裁杜紀川和副總裁孫大衛，在幾年前拿出一億美元分紅給所有員工，震驚全美；2004年台灣總統大選爭議，他們又捐出一億元新台幣，協助查驗選票，轟動台灣。 金士頓已在上海設置25萬平方呎的廠房，且將產品觸角延伸到Flash記憶體等數位媒體產品，多項產品皆成為市場龍頭老大。杜紀川與孫大衛雖然早就是億萬富翁，仍一本初衷，在橙縣芳泉谷總部開放式辦公室，捲起袖子與員工一起埋頭苦幹。 他們的崛起過程頗具傳奇色彩，1987年10月19日華爾街股市崩盤的這天，反而是他們實現美國夢的開始。原來杜紀川與孫大衛因早年從事的個人電腦生意，由當時在電腦業叱吒風雲的AST公司收購，取得五百萬元後，全數投資於股市，結果一夕之間變得一無所有。 篤信「危機就是轉機」的杜紀川，只有與孫大衛重新出發，成立金士頓，採取步步為營、穩紮穩打的策略，力爭上游。杜紀川把公司的成功歸功於知人善用，擁有一群向心力極強的員工。其實，這股向心力的來源，正是由於公司一向把員工當成是最大資產、善待員工，並且提供員工最佳福利。 金士頓在1996年底一度被日本軟體銀行併購，當時杜紀川與孫大衛拿出一億美元與員工分享，震撼全美業界，讓人稱羡不已，也讓金士頓聲名大噪，令求職者十分嚮往。後來日本軟體銀行因擴張過度，資金陷入窘境，營運方向改變，杜紀川與孫大衛再將金士頓買回。 愛好音樂 頗有建樹 外表看來沉穩內斂、文質彬彬的杜紀川，工作之餘喜歡打籃球，他還是一名好鼓手。這位喜愛西洋音樂的企業家，成立極具專業水準的「加州夢幻大樂團」，經常在華人社區的慈善籌款會義務演出。 杜紀川的父親杜桐蓀當年曾任中華民國電影檢查處處長，他的母親朱莉早年畢業於北平師範學院，是老牌影星，藝名威莉，曾主演「出賣影子的人」等片，定居台灣後，曾與「小咪姐」李麗華合作演出電影「盲戀」。 杜紀川從小接觸娛樂圈，就讀高中時就曾組織樂團，擔任吉他手。但他不諱言，高中學業成績不佳，曾轉了多所學校，父親也不鼓勵他玩樂隊。他在上大學後又曾組織另一支樂團，並因興趣轉向，擔任鼓手。 杜紀川在移民美國之前，曾留學德國，並在親戚經營的中餐館打工，受到客人冷嘲熱諷，體會了人情冷暖。但他認為，這項經驗讓他日後懂得如何應付各項挑戰和挫折。 杜紀川與美麗的妻子王曼齡育有一子，他們兩人平素熱心公益，都是社區楷模。 杜紀川每天都會抽空閱讀「世界日報」，他對世界日報提出精準及深入淺出的分析和建言，從另一個角度折射出他在商場上的成功絕不是偶然。 用心讀報 真誠建言 杜紀川在接受「世界日報30周年社慶」「名人訪談」時說，他來美不久，世界日報就創刊了。當時與父母親同住的他還記得，家裡總是有一疊疊的世界日報，他的父親和母親都是世界日報的忠實讀者。 杜紀川說：「我父親最關心台灣和中國大陸的政治新聞，我母親則喜歡閱讀社會新聞。」他自己則喜歡閱讀與時事有關的報導，也關心台海兩岸各項發展。 杜紀川說：「我還記得世界日報對美國前總統尼克森中國大陸的破冰之旅，有很深刻及翔實的報導。」他認為，世界日報這幾年進步很多，五年前，世界日報對有關台灣政治的新聞立場似乎偏向泛藍，近年來則比較中立及客觀。 杜紀川還指出，世界日報的分類廣告深具威力，真的是為初來乍到的新移民提供安家立業的資訊管道。 由於是籃球健將，杜紀川對與籃球有關的訊息特別關注。他對世界日報每逢姚明出賽，就會在頭版「廣角鏡」圖文並茂的提示內頁新聞，表示很欣賞。他說，這項做法讓籃球迷馬上可翻到內頁，一睹為快。 公司產品暢銷全世界的杜紀川並從行銷角度建議，世界日報不妨多刊一點八卦新聞。如之前林志玲墜馬，許多人關心，即為典型的八卦新聞。不過他不贊成缺乏事實根據的八卦新聞，他認為媒體的任何報導，都應求證當事人或有信用的根據，才能建立權威性。 杜紀川在肯定世界日報多年來對社區的貢獻之餘，並從讀者角度建議，世界日報應加強如時尚、旅遊等題材的報導。在世界日報邁進30周年之際，杜紀川恭喜世界日報，並表示將一如既往，繼續支持世界日報和閱讀世界日報。他祝福世界日報百尺竿頭，更進一步。 （系列之十二） [2006-02-23] 555555555555555555

Tulane transfer eyes fresh start

Photo by Isaac Brekken/Review-Journal]]] As the daughter of a South Korean diplomat, Kasi Lee is used to moving around. But she thought she had found a semi-permanent home last year when she decided to play golf for Tulane. "I fell in love with the people and the place," Lee said of her visit to the New Orleans school. "It's where I wanted to be." But Lee was on the move again only months after choosing Tulane over offers from Louisiana State, Arizona State and Auburn, and it had nothing to do with her father's job as a diplomat. Tulane opted to suspend eight of its varsity sports programs, including women's golf, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. An NCAA ruling allowed Green Wave players to transfer without sitting out a year, as normally required, but that was little consolation to Lee. She was on the move before she really had a chance to settle in. "I'm devastated, honestly," she said. "There's no more Tulane golf. I really thought that was the situation for me." Once free to transfer, Lee had limited options. It wasn't because her game wasn't good enough -- she was rated 27th in the country as a high school senior in Paramus, N.J. -- but rather because most schools no longer had roster space. UNLV coach Missy Ringler had no such problem. She not only had a roster spot, but a position in her lineup that needed to be filled. But Ringler had to resist the urge to pick up the phone immediately upon learning Tulane's players were effectively free agents. It wasn't long, though, before Ringler got a call from Tulane coach Sue Bower with the news that Lee was interested in UNLV. Ringler didn't waste time expressing her interest. "Once she got her release, we were in touch fairly quickly and things kind of came together," Ringler said. "Each side realized we were good for the other." Lee is an athletic player who is long off the tee and a good putter. She could compete for the fifth spot on UNLV's travel squad, a position that was a nagging problem in the fall for the 12th-ranked Rebels. Because of her father's job, Lee lived in South Korea, Switzerland, Ireland and Argentina before moving to the United States in 2002. She learned to play on different types of course styles and grasses and developed an impressive amateur resume. She was an American Junior Golf Association All-American and placed second in the New Jersey girls state tournament and fourth in the boys state tournament. Tulane played its fall season, but Lee didn't get off to a great start. Things were hectic after she was forced to evacuate New Orleans two days before the hurricane struck. "Actually, I was never really in the bad weather because I got out before it was too bad," she said. "The problem was, nobody really knew what was happening." She's settled in now, though, and hopes her days of moving around are over. "I'll always have Tulane in my heart, but I'm really excited about the school and the team here," Lee said. "I was ready for a fresh start and UNLV is giving it to me." 555555555555555

造訪皮拉特斯山 搭乘蒸汽船、齒軌火車及纜車 體驗不同交通工具樂趣 [[[阿潘那奇斯達的齒軌火車起點。
從琉森搭船出發前往阿潘那奇斯達，海鳥熱情送行。]]] ●一次賞遍瑞士湖光山色勝景並不困難，瑞士人推薦「金三角」遊程，以美麗的城市盧森（Luzern）為起迄點，造訪皮拉特斯山（Pilatus）風光，以遊船、齒軌火車及纜車等三種交通工具連接，形成美麗的金三角旅遊路線，在賞玩美景之際，也可體驗不同的交通工具。 這趟行程可以彈性安排半天或一天的時間，早上從盧森碼頭搭乘充滿懷舊風味的蒸汽船，約一個半小時抵達阿潘那奇斯達（Alpnachstad）接著轉乘世界最陡峭的齒軌火車上山，軌道全長4618公尺，約半個小時後抵達山頂的皮拉特斯山，在山上逛逛，呼吸新鮮空氣，天氣晴朗時候，從山上可以看到阿爾卑斯山73座山峰。接著在山上用午餐，餐後搭乘纜車下山，約半小時抵達克里恩芝（Kriens），步行數分鐘到巴士站搭巴士，約12分鐘返抵盧森。 整個旅行過程令人愉悅。從盧森湖上船的那一刻，即刻被度假的氣氛所包圍。首先是湖邊戲水的純白天鵝及水鳥，悠閒而自由自在的姿態，把人導入歡悅的情緒中，船一開航，水鳥發出嘎啦嘎啦的叫聲，圍繞著船尾飛翔著、玩耍著，不論誰看了都開心。 蒸汽船緩緩開進湖心，景物從盧森市中心古典的城市建築，逐漸轉換成幽靜的鄉間景致，從湖邊延伸到山頂的綠油油草地上，零星散佈著一座座典型的瑞士木屋，各色花朵在窗檯上綻放，偶有三兩牛羊映入眼簾。在湖岸上，陸續出現幾座房舍，湖邊設有數個船位，停放著小艇，瑞士人說，這裡的房價很高，尤其設有船位的湖邊木屋更是，只有有錢人才住得起。 抵達阿潘那奇斯達後，轉搭建成於1889年的齒軌火車上山，這是全世界最陡峭的齒軌登山火車，最陡的坡度達到48%，火車駕駛人位置在最前方，他禮貌地等候旅客全數上車後，協助從外方關好車門，接著火車駛出車站，皮拉特斯山美景在眼前呈現，火車緩慢攀登而上的景色，令人感動。 約半小時火車車程，抵達海拔2132公尺的皮拉特斯庫爾姆（Pilatus Kulm），一出火車，皮拉特斯山的指示牌立在前方，並以簡體中文、英文、日文、德文、法文等多種語言書寫，遊客喜歡在此拍照留念，從此地望向四方，山頂壯麗的景致，交織著秋天經常造訪的雲霧，隨著風力吹拂，美景時隱時現。 接著展開攀爬行動，一層層石階，引領旅客穿越過早年施工期的艱辛時程，兩邊牆上並以照片展示皮拉特斯山的傳說，從山上，可以俯瞰下方的一座教堂及少數農家。天氣晴朗時，周圍包括鐵力士山、少女峰等73座山峰全在視線中，從此還可以看得到黑森林。 皮拉特斯山之旅，在搭纜車下山的過程中，讓旅客體驗到另一個高潮，從山頂到纜車位在克里恩茲的起迄點，行程超過半個小時，途中必須在中間站克里恩茲格（Krienseregg）轉乘另一個纜車，旅客也可以在此下纜車登山。 纜車抵達克里恩茲後，步行數分鐘搭上巴士，只消10分鐘車程，便可以回到盧森市區。由於此一行程中，從地圖上看，盧森市區位在右下方，平行延伸過去的阿潘那奇斯達在左下方，和北上方的皮拉特斯山串連成一個正三角形，因此這個遊程得到「金三角」美稱。 [2006-01-21] 111111111111111111

By Tiffany Chang U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine Chao, a Taiwanese-born immigrant, encouraged Asian-Americans to speak up, and to work on their communication skills during a summit hosted by the Asian Pacific Americans Federal Career Advancement.*1 While speaking at the career advancement summit dedicated to Asian-American federal workers, the U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine Chao said that it is vital for Asian Americans to acquire the skills of marketing, human relations and report briefing in order to advance in their career with the federal government. Chao also praised the Asian-American work force for its contribution to the development of the U.S. economy. At the same time, Chao emphasized that it is important for Asian-Americans to improve both their verbal and written communications skills. Chao says that Asian-Americans must learn about the American ideology of team-spirit in the work environment, while also participating in meaningful community work. The latest statistics show that Asian-Americans currently make up 4.8% of all federal employees. Chao is hoping that the career advancement summit will help Asian-Americans improve upon their career skills, while also furthering their understanding of the different methods for advancing into high positions within the government. Ever since Chao took office with the advent of the Bush administration, she has dedicated herself to raising public awareness of the minority Asian workforce struggling to advance in the American society.*2 Secretary Chao received her B. A. degree in Economics with straight A's for all her four years at the famous Mount Holyoke College in New England. She obtained her M. B. A. degree from Harvard University in 1979. She also studied at M.I.T., Dartmouth College, and Columbia University. "With the excellency of knowledge, humanity, and patriotism inspired by Elaine Chao, Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) has continued its many years effort to community service and spiritual belief. Nevada is honor to have WBTI under her spiritual Chairpersonship and I am especially honor to be a M.I.S. Manager of the Graduate School of Business and Public Administration of WBTI," humble as he is, River Sun chatted excitedly during the celebration dinner party at the Gee Joon Chinese Restaurant of Horseshoe Club. The Moon Festival of Midautumn has been many thousand years celebrated as a day for patriotism by the Chinese people in the Far East and Southeastern Asia. The party was held by WBTI in Las Vegas on September 11, 2003. Following the inspiration of the past many years of the accomplishment of Ms. Elaine Chao's contribution of humane spirit to our society, we have the persistense of Wou Shien's spirit for education here in America. If a coolie and hard woker like him could dedicate to eduction by offering all his income and life to build a school for children in his village, what should not for us to offer our efforts for our community? *3 "As an Assistant Fellow of the Culture Institution of Washington Business and Technology Institute, it's my precious opportunity to realize my potential of entrepreneuship to work with all these outstanding faculty members of WBTI under the encouragement and spiritual leadeship of Elaine Chao who has been honored as the Chairperson of this Institute," said Ms. Becky Ung.*4 Becky Ung is the former President and Member of the School Board for Unified School District of San Morino, California. She is a national and international famous Speaker in California, United States; Taipei, Taiwan; and Beijing, Shanghai, Amoy, China. Becky has published a numerious Vidio Tapes, feature articles, and books. Her recent famous book named "What you Wish is What you Get" was published by Songan Publishing Inc. in 2001 at Taipei, Taiwan. The next one of hers, "E. Q. Unlimited," will be published by Franklin Publications at Taipei in the fall of 2002. She is an expert of E. Q. (Emotional Intelligence). "The mission of this School [Graduate School of Business and Public Administration (GSBPA) of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI)] will emphasize the humanitarian orientation of public administration and the social responsibility of business management. Through academic entrepreneurship, we may expect the endeavor of this School for the community service based on humane spirit, led by Chairperson Elaine Chao*5 of WBTI," said Dr. Dina Titus, Adjunct Professor of Administrative Strategies in GSBPA. Dina Titus was born May 23, 1950 in Thomasville, Georgia. She graduated from College of William and Mary with A.B.. She received her M. A. and Ph. D. degrees from University of Georgia and Florida State University, respectively. She is a Senator and Minority Floor Leader of Nevada Senate. 僑聯總會舉辦 促進文化事業 獎勵優良著作 【本報紐約訊】華僑救國聯合總會為復興中華文化，促進海外華人文化事業，獎勵優良華文著述，舉辦「中華民國95年海外華人著述獎」，自1月1日起至6月30日接受申請，獎項分為「學術論著獎」、「文藝創作獎」、「新聞寫作獎」等三大類。主辦單位鼓勵海外僑團及華僑救國總會成員推荐佳作。
