It's time to put on your walking shoes!

If you'll be in Las Vegas this weekend, I hope you will join me to "walk the vote" this Saturday! Congressional candidate Tessa Hafen and other special guests will join the fun as we talk about issues and encourage voter registration and turnout.

The event will take place this Saturday, September 16 at Desert Breeze Park. We'll meet at north end of the park (Desert Inn and Durango) at 9:30 a.m. We would love to see you there with your families, dogs and friends for a great time at the park.

If you aren't in Las Vegas or can't attend this event, rest assured there will be many more great activities planned leading up to the election. And while we love to see the turnout and support at our events, please remember there are many ways you can get involved in the campaign and help us on our road to victory in November. The time and talent you can offer will make a tremendous difference.

To get involved or for more information, please call our headquarters in Las Vegas at (702) 369-0074, or in Reno at (775) 323-2006 - or you can sign up via our website, www.dinatitus.com.

Please know how much your enthusiasm and support are appreciated.

GOP CONVENTION: Faithful spread optimism
Despite party setbacks, attendees keep outlook upbeat at county gathering
By DAVID MCGRATH SCHWARTZ
REVIEW-JOURNAL

Even the most hard-core GOP enthusiast had cause for moping Saturday.

Republican Attorney General George Chanos made a last-minute decision to drop out of the race, leaving the party without a candidate for the office. Republican Recorder Fran Deane is accused of using her elected post to sell sensitive documents before they were made public. And the president's poll numbers are dropping.

But an event such as Saturday's Clark County Republican Convention is meant for the party's optimists. About 140 people showed up at Palace Station to hear GOP candidates speak and determine the county party's platform and bylaws.

"I'm hearing a lot of optimism," said Norman Yeager, a Republican delegate and president of the Las Vegas Townhall Group, a conservative political action committee.

He pointed to an economy that was doing "extremely well" and dismissed recent local and national corruption scandals as bipartisan affairs.

Despite some rosy projections, even many of the faithful are anxious about the possibility of losing their monopoly on state offices.

"There's a significant amount of apprehensions," said John Stranhagen, a county central committee member. "Both sides are apprehensive."

The two headliners at the event were U.S. Sen. John Ensign and Rep. Jon Porter. In their 15-minute speeches, neither one mentioned President Bush, whose approval ratings remain sluggish, according to polls.

That led one delegate, a grandmotherly woman under 5 feet tall, to confront each one after their speeches.

"Who's our president?" she asked Ensign in the hallway outside the banquet room.

"Excuse me?" the senator responded, leaning closer to the woman to hear her better.

"Who's our president?"

"Who's our president? George W. Bush."

"Good. I didn't hear his name in there."

When confronted by the woman, who didn't give her name, Porter said not to read anything into the omission. "I was here to talk about congressional issues."

Ensign, who received a couple of standing ovations, criticized his Senate colleagues for voting Thursday to raise the federal debt limit and then adding more money to the budget.

"It's really a shame," he told the audience. "We're in the majority. You'd think we could control spending."

He was just one of three Republican senators to join Democrats in voting against increasing the debt ceiling.

After the speech, Ensign said, "George Bush is a great president in many ways. I guess I'm upset with the Republican Party. ... It's a matter of waking up and realizing we have a huge problem."

He said he is concerned that the Republican base will get discouraged. "There's no question (that) if we lose these elections, it's because Republicans stay at home," he said.

Paul Adams, chairman of the state political party, said, "There's a certain concern about limited government and low taxes. But as long as we're not distracted and depressed, we'll be OK."

He pointed to the ongoing political corruption trial involving Democrats Mary Kincaid-Chauncey and Dario Herrera, whom Adams called "Harry Reid's former protege."

He also said that even though a Republican attorney general candidate would get a late start because of Chanos' late withdrawal, the party will be able to get a viable candidate in the race.

The event failed to develop into a debate among the party's candidates for governor.

Rep. Jim Gibbons canceled a scheduled speech, electing to welcome back Nevada troops arriving from Afghanistan. Lt. Gov. Lorraine Hunt also decided to welcome the troops home instead of attend the convention.

That left state Sen. Bob Beers as the lone Republican candidate for governor at the convention.

In a well-received speech, Beers highlighted his Tax and Spending Control, or TASC, constitutional amendment initiative as a way to reign in government. The state senator appeared to have the most delegates sporting stickers out of the gubernatorial candidates.

Beers' remarks about limiting government spending drew the biggest applause.

Following Beers' speech, William Cushard, a Republican delegate, said he was optimistic about the party's candidates for governor.

"I'm disenchanted with the (current) governor -- I have been for three years. I'm disenchanted with the president -- just not enough to vote for a Democrat," he said.

ERIN NEFF: Team Titus is on the ball

The reason Dina Titus will win the Democratic gubernatorial primary can be summed up by looking at her schedule for today, Friday and Saturday. No statewide candidate, on either side of the aisle, is working harder to cover all bases of the campaign -- fundraising, grass-roots, securing the base and visiting rural Nevada.

But it is not just her ability to move through all of these areas; it is the way she has designed the issues that are now resounding that have given her this advantage.

Her legislative career drew the attention of EMILY's List, the pro-choice organization that raises money for Democratic women running for office. So tonight, Titus embarks on the first leg of her whirlwind three days by flying to San Francisco for an EMILY's List fundraiser. Titus is one of about three Democratic candidates who will be featured at the "Making Change Happen" event, hosted by EMILY's List president Ellen Malcolm for Bay area donors.

The group's endorsement has already boosted Titus' fundraising, bringing tens of thousands in small donations from around the country to her campaign coffers. Most EMILY's List donors have found her on the organization's list of preferred candidates on its Web site.

After the EMILY's List event, Titus will be back on a plane to Nevada for some legislative work that benefits her campaign.

Last year, Titus authored Senate Concurrent Resolution 35, which gave the Legislative Commission one of its interim study topics -- the "protection of natural treasures." That's actually the name of the committee, not just Titus' environmental talk.

The Natural Treasures committee meets tomorrow at the El Capitan Hotel and Casino in Hawthorne to delve into nearby Walker Lake and discuss plans for a new state park at Monte Cristo's Castle in Esmeralda County. The committee has already met in Pahrump and has a future meeting scheduled for Ely.

Talk about a rural tour.

Titus said the study committee was not created to give her better access to rural Nevada -- and the voters who will swing the 2006 election. "I'm on the water committee, too," she said. "Besides, this is so keeping with everything I've ever done."

Titus clearly has the environmental record to back that up, noted best by her proposed ring around the valley and her 2003 battle with developer Jim Rhodes to restrict major home building near the Red Rock conservation area. Titus said the Red Rock fight led her to worry about lesser-noticed natural areas in the state and the threats they face from development.

The first meetings of the committee, which Titus chairs, examined the problems with trash, traffic and a lack of resources on Mount Charleston. The Ely meeting will focus on how tourism related to nearby Great Basin National Park can help spur economic development in White Pine County.

Again, this is not a campaign event.

Tomorrow's meeting will include discussion on the U.S. Department of Defense's plan to store "toxic mercury" at the Hawthorne Army and Ammunition Depot, according to the agenda. "Regardless of where you stand on this issue, we agree that the people of Nevada must be fully informed and our natural treasures protected from any environmental hazards that may result from toxic mercury," Titus said in the legislative committee's news release.

Titus believes that focusing attention on the environmental issues, from mercury to parks to wildlife, will help drum up statewide momentum for new legislation in 2007. A move to create the park in Esmeralda, for example, failed in the 2005 Legislature. This committee will have several bill drafts that bear the imprimatur of a Legislative Commission study and a better chance for passage.

After the meeting in Hawthorne on Friday, Titus is off to Reno for Saturday's Washoe County Democratic Party Convention. After speaking in the morning, she'll fly to Las Vegas to hit the Clark County Democratic Party convention.

Her primary opponent, Henderson Mayor Jim Gibson, was tweaking his schedule Wednesday to try to accommodate a morning speech at the Clark County convention and an afternoon one in Washoe. The dual speaking gigs appeared an afterthought, but it was the only thought on the minds of Team Titus. As a state legislator, Titus has worked on higher-profile issues over the years than has Gibson in his capacity as a mayor.

Another example of this came to fruition Wednesday when a nonprofit organization opened a new housing facility for the disabled. Titus has sponsored several pieces of legislation over the years dealing with access and opportunities for people with disabilities. On Wednesday, Accessible Space Inc., unveiled a low-income, 19-unit facility for adult residents with brain injuries and mobility impairments.

It's called Dina Titus Estates, and it's the kind of clout she has rightly earned for championing disability issues. But it's also more bona fides in her bid to win the Democratic nomination.
