LVRJ/wbti: Graziadio Family Heartfelt Concern for Storm Sandy Victims!

Dear Graziadio Family Member,

My heart goes out to the millions who are still without power in the Northeast and the many communities from New England to North Carolina struggling to dig out from the debris and damage following landfall this week of Storm Sandy. We know from the news that this storm is one of the region抯 most devastating ever. As I watch and read the accounts, I cannot help to remember Katrina and its horrifying impact. There is no part of the country that is not affected when nature acts so destructively. We all know someone directly touched by Sandy抯 fury, even here in Los Angeles, be it family members, friends, colleagues or classmates.

When such disasters strike it is comforting to know that there are so many willing to help those who have been affected. I encourage you to use your alumni and professional network. Do not hesitate to reach out to classmates, professors and the University if we can be of assistance.
You have numerous connections through the Graziadio School that may be in the area or that know someone who is. Your network can be a resource for information and for ensuring those in harm抯 way are safe and secure. I am also encouraging all in our community to give in this time of need to one of the many worthy organizations that are meeting the needs of the storm victims. The people displaced by this storm will need food, clothing, medical supplies and any number of things in the coming weeks.
If the University can be of assistance and you wonder where to start, contact the Graziadio School Office of Alumni Relations at GSBMalumni@pepperdine.edu, or 310-568-5532.
Please join me in keeping in your prayers and hearts the millions in the Northeast enduring this storm抯 aftermath. With Thanksgiving, Christmas and the Holiday season approaching, they will particularly need our common humanity during this season.
Bless You,

Linda A. Livingstone, Ph.D.
Dean, Graziadio School of Business and Management

LVRJ/wbti: District Judge Mark Denton pointed out -- "It's a good dinner party with Dean Dr. Linda Livingstone of Pepperdine University's Graziadio School of Business and Management in Las Vegas!"
by GSBPA of WBTI*1
Jesus said, "Everyone who bears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock." --- Matthew 7:24-25 of the "Bible"

Why our District Judge Mark Denton has enjoyed his humble character in this world with his authority and power? It's only because of his great accomplishments of professionalism, integrity, and dignity!

Dr. Tony Lei received a letter from District Judge Mark Denton soon after the first edition of this feature article was published. The letter written by him was sent to Dr. Lei by mail from his Department XIII of the Eight Judicial District Court on May 18, 2004.

"Dear Dr. Lei, Thank you so much for including me in last Friday's dinner recognition for Dean Livingstone. It was great to see you and to meet the Dean and the other Pepperdine alumni. (It's also good to meet Ms. Helen Hsueh and Mr. Robert Song.) Please give my say to your lovely wife. Sincerely," wrote District Judge Mark Denton. Mark Denton is also one of the two Vice Presidents of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI).

In winning friendship, Dr. Tony Lei used to remind us the following good words from the "Bible":

"A word aptly spoken is like apple of gold in settings of silver." --- Proverbs 25 : 11 of the "Bible"
"Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves." Romans 12 : 10 of the "Bible"
"Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart, and the pleasantness of one's friend spring from his earnest counsel." --- Proverbs 27 : 9 of the "Bible"

Welcome! Welcome our Dean Dr. Linda Livingstone of Pepperdine University's Graziadio School of Business and Management to Las Vegas!

Dear friends, let's share the following golden words of wisdom with our faculty members please:

"A (woman or a) man finds joy in giving an apt reply --- and how good is a timely word!" --- Proverbs 15 : 23 of the "Bible"
"The reward for work done is the opportunity to do more." --- Jonas Salk, MD
"Freedom is the oxygen of the soul." --- Moshe Dayan
"With sincere love, it's like living in Heaven. On the other hand, with cruel hate, it's like living in Hell. Fighting and malice for selfish gain belong to Hell. Cooperation and encouragement to promote quality of life are attitudes of Heaven." --- Dr. Tony T. Lei
"Do to others as you would have them do to you." --- Luke 6 : 31 of the "Bible"
"The great Winston Churchill said, 'We all make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.' Tony, I know that you like to exemplify this inspiration same as it's my driving force by which I start out each day." --- Judge Natalie L. Tyrrell of Nevada

Dr. Linda Livingstone, Dean of Pepperdine University's Graziadio School of Business and Management, invited several selected and achieved alumni to dinner with her at the Pietro's Gourmet Restaurant of Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 14, 2004.

"Dear Dr. Tony Lei: This message will confirm your attendance for dinner with Dr. Linda Livingstone, Dean of Pepperdine University's Graziadio School of Business and Management. If you have arranged with me to bring a guest, your guest (Judge Mark Denton, District Judge of Nevada) is confirmed as well. Thank you and enjoy the dinner. Sincerely," wrote Pamela Bellew, Director, Advancement and Alumni Relations.

The presented individuals as guests were Dr. Tony Lei, Mr. Hector Mon, Dr. Wanda M. Costen, Mr. David Donovan, Mr. Douglas W. Hensley, Mr. Michael Jabara, and Judge Mark Denton.

Dr. Tony Tung-tien Lei received MBA with straight A from Pepperdine University in 1969. He received his Doctor of Education degree in Institutional Management from Pepperdine University in 1990. He was an Assoiciate Professor of Information Management of the Graduate School of Business Administration of National Chunghsin University and a Fellow of Management for Dean Dr. Donald R. Sime of the School of Business and Management of Pepperdine University.

Ms. Helen Hsueh and Mr. Robert Song were invited by Dr. Tony Lei as our representative and photographer for the Chinese multimedia. Helen Hsueh is the President of Las Vegas Chinese Daily News, while Robert Song is the President of Pan-America Legal Services Company. "It's good to have more people joining us as friends of our Pepperdine family," said Dean Livingstone at the Dinner Party.

"It was a pleasure having you join us at our dinner. Thanks to for sending the pictures. They are great," wrote Dr. Livingstone to Robert Song, who sent out the pictures to all participants soon after the Dinner.

Pepperdine University is a very famous university. Its main campus at Malibu, California is the leading beauty of noted universities in the world.

"Pepperdine University has earned a reputation for its responsiveness to career-oriented professionals," said Dr. David Davenport, former President of the University.2* The Graziadio School of Business and Management has enjoined one of the highest reputation for Pepperdine University.*3 To educate executives and managers with innovative knowledge and modern technology is a core competency of the Graziadio School . "Indeed, this year has marked a number of significant benchmarks for the Graziadio School. This fall we welcomed the largest class of full-time M.B.A. students in our school's history," said Dr. Linda Livingstone. "In a time when many business schools have been challeged by decreasing student enrollment, this drasmatic increase --- up more than 305 from last year --- was both a testment to the quality of our curriculum as well as the hard work of our committed staff and faculty. This year's class boasts an average GMAT score of 636 and includes students from more than a dozen countries." *4

A distiguished group of professors is offering speeches and seminars to business owners and executives. Please join Dean Linda A. Livingstone for a special series on executive leadership hosted by the Graziadio School of Business and Management. You may learn what some of today's leading business authors have to say about effectively communicating vision and strategy, building and maintaining a company's reputation, leading an organization to greater success, and much more.

"One of the Graziadio School's core is its ability to successfully address the unique challenges of executive learning. This forum is an important part of an effort to extend Pepperdine's reputation and recognition in this arena. It provides an opportunity for world-class thought leaders in knowledge creation, knowledge dissemination, and knowledge utilization to come together in an informal setting to discuss the key challenges of executive learning and leadership development ," said Dr. Robert Fulner.*5

"Rapidly accelerating change is the critical challenge in virtually every industry today. The complexities of our world demand managers and workers with dramatically increased capavilities. The Graziadio School has been developing value-center leaders for more than a quater century. During that time, it has become the premier provider of quality business talent in California and the western United States." said Dr. Linda Livingstone*6

Pepperdine Pepperdine University MBA ranks first in 15 schools of California.*7

Recently, the Los Angeles Business Journal ranked and reported that Pepperdine University's Graziadio School of Business and Management was named "the pacesetter" in MBA education in Los Angeles County. The School retained top ranking ahead of USC's Marshall School of Business and The Anderson School at UCLA which placed second and third respectively.

As the market share leader in California, graduates of MBA annually from Graziadio School are more than any other school in the state. It is the sixth largest AACSB-accredited school in the United States. The success of this school should be credited to its fruitful efforts to delivering practical, results-oriented education that addresses the needs of working professionals and executives.

Dr. Livingstone received her B.S., M.B.A., and Ph.D. from Oklahoma State University. She assured her responsibilities as the Dean of the School on June 1, 2002.

Dr. Livingstone brought an international perspective to Pepperdine University. She helped develop and teach courses in an MBA program in Jinan, China. She expressed a keen interest in building additional bridges between Pepperdine MBA curriculum and the corporate world based on her prior experience in developing semester-long consulting projects with major companies for MBA students.

"Our Graziadio School is an outstanding business school with a national reputation. It is one of only a few schools across the country that has the potential to build a national and international reputation across all of its programs customized for executives, full-time, and fully employed students. And it is probably the only school with a faith-based mission committed to developing values-centered leaders that can accomplish this goal," said Dr. Livingstone.

At the time of Dr. Linvingstone's appointment, Dr. Tony Lei wished her endeavor to lead the Graziadio School into this millennium with academic excellence, practicality expertise, and spiritual values. A special program of MBA/PKE designed for presidents and key executives internationally is in ugent need for the cooperation of the Graziadio School and WBTI. "The spirit of both innovation and pioneers has motivated America to be a leading and prosperous country in the world. As an integrative academic program of the professional education directed to substantial gains in executive competence, modern technology, innovative knowledge, and spirit of entrepreneurship; an unique feature of one week workshop in Las Vegas for the cooperated MBA/PKE Program should be designed for the Chinese speaking business executives and owners of the international world mainly from China, Malaysia, Singapore, and Taiwan," said Dr. Tony Lei, President of Washington Business and Technology Institute.*8

Coordinated with the faculty members recently, Dr. Tony Lei has designed educational programs of the CPM and MBA/PKE with Dr. Keong Leong; the CMPA and MPA/SME with Dr. Lee Bernick; and the CEH with Dr. William Thompson for the GSBPA of WBTI.

"It's a great market in China for our MBA programs with WBTI's Graduate School of Business and Public Administration," talked Dean Livingstone with Dr. Tony Lei, who sat next to her during the Dinner Party at the Tropicana on May 14, 2004 in Las Vegas. "I'd like Dr. Terry Young go together with your Graduate School for the launching of our MBA programs. Dr. Young is in charge of the international management programs for our Graziadio School of Business and Management," she continued.*9

The Right Energy for a Change
By Jawaad Malik, MBA 2004

I recently accepted a new position as a Principal Analyst in the utilities compliance department with Sempra Energy, a fortune 500 energy company headquartered in San Diego. My new role at Sempra will focus on Sarbanes Oxley compliance, and monitoring controls over financial reporting.

Making this job change was one of the most difficult decisions for me, especially because I was happy in my current situation. I don't know if I was looking for a change or change was looking for me, but after completing my MBA degree from Pepperdine, and subsequently becoming a Certified Public Accountant, a new world of opportunities and options seemed to be available.*2

Fast Track Strategies for New Recruits

Hugh Karseras

Some of you may think your work is done once you抳e secured your first job out of business school. Think again. You抳e only stepped on to the first rung of what could be a long corporate ladder.

On the first day of my first job for a major investment bank, a senior director warned me and my fellow recruits that many of us would no longer be with the company in two years. Some of us would leave of own volition, he explained, while others would be asked to leave. We were a room full of mostly Oxford and Cambridge graduates, and despite having been selected from hundreds of applicants for our positions, the majority of us would not be staying.

This was a vivid lesson that talent and genius alone won抰 guarantee success in the business world. However, there are strategies embraced by successful executives today that can propel you past the first rung of the corporate ladder and position you for success at the top.

Project the Right Attitude

Attitude plays an important role in the success of new hires. Too often young executives damage their chances of promotion because they simply do not have the right attitude. Many times first-rungers approach their first job as if they were at the final rung of their career ladder, with a sense that certain type of work is beneath them. There is nothing that annoys colleagues more than people who complain about their work or attempt to hand off projects. Be enthusiastic and adopt a proactive approach that focuses on performance. Be flexible, be respectful, and you抣l ensure that your colleagues will want to work with you again.

Focus on Self Awareness

Self awareness is essential to effective communication, and effective communicators excel in the workplace. Be aware of how people work around you and how you fit in your workplace dynamic. If you抮e a natural talker, be cognizant of how people are responding. Does their body language change? Do you give them time to respond? As you become more self aware, you can begin to enhance your communication skills by employing such best practices as sharing a point of view without arguing, being factual without becoming too detailed, and listening attentively while still asking questions.

Connect with a Mentor

Mentoring relationships are the modern equivalent of the apprentice-master relationship. They are the vehicles through which senior executives pass on the benefit of their experiences to first-rungers. With that said, connecting with a mentor requires an element of luck. I was fortunate in my career to come across the right people who took me under their wing. You can make your own luck by identifying a person you like and have respect for, and then looking for situations to work with them. Once you抳e secured a mentoring relationship, be sure to over deliver on your promises and remain in continuous contact. After all, nepotism is alive and well in business today卆nd it抯 called mentoring.

Adopt a No-Enemy Policy

This is a very simple rule avoid conflict at work. After all, when you抮e in the first few years of your career, conflict is usually found not with your peers but with your boss. And it is not surprising that is usually the junior executive who will suffer more. Sometimes it will require you to bite your tongue when you want to answer back or accept work that you抎 prefer not to do. In general, by being cooperative and exerting a high level of tolerance, you抣l be able to move on and past difficult situations.

The True Meaning of Success

Kim Clark, the former dean of Harvard Business School, would state to each graduating class of MBA students: 揘o success in the workplace can compensate for failure at home. Building on this point, recognize that in every career there will be trade-offs. To find the true meaning of success you will need to manage your own expectations. If you do not, you will become increasingly frustrated and disappointed in your career. If you do, you抣l discover the secret behind a long and productive journey up and beyond the corporate ladder.

Hugh Karseras is author of From New Recruit to High Flyer. He began his career as an investment banking analyst and holds a degree cum laude in chemistry from Princeton University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Success Story - In My Words

By Jessmy D扴ouza, MBA 2007

When I completed my undergraduate degree in Economics, I had to choose between continuing graduate studies in Finance at Mumbai University and undertaking a six-month internship in Japan through AIESEC Mumbai. AIESEC (www.aiesec.org) is the world抯 largest student run organization that provides an international platform to build cultural understanding by through internships in both corporate and non-profit organizations. Therefore, at the age of 21, I set off for Tokyo.

The Japanese company with whom I interned with offered a full-time position and I worked with them for about seven years before deciding to move on California to pursue my personal goal of a MBA degree. Adapting to a new culture, different perspectives of looking at life and learning a new language was the biggest training ground on dealing with ambiguities in life. In the time, that I spent in Japan I traveled to over 15 countries and integrated myself in the Japanese society through networking and organizations.

The purpose for the MBA was to develop my technical skills in finance and accounting. However, education for me is not only an academic experience but also process of learning through networking events, student groups on campus and interactions with the international student body.

Dr. Chuck McPeak, professor of my advanced accounting class, taught me more than just making sure that debits were always on the left hand side. 揥hat is the right answer was the running joke in the class. Our case studies showed us that there were always going to be grey areas that could not be solved by a right answer. 揗anaging your earnings is going down a slippery slope拻 so says Prof. McPeak. In an effort to drive equity value, have higher EPS numbers any efforts to managing earnings is where the line between ethical corporate practice and fraud is blurred.

Ethics is important to me, which is why I chose to be part of the Value Centered Leadership Lab (VCLL.) The VCLL is a 揝tudent driven, faculty sponsored, organization that focuses on corporate governance, social enterprise, and business ethics. In short, VCLL provides an opportunity to integrate the MBA degree with the importance of ethical management practices through lecture series, case studies and competition.

The Graziadio Case Competition was the first value-based competition, co-sponsored by the School of Law抯 Geoffrey H. Palmer Center for Entrepreneurship and the Law. The competition allotted teams of graduate students less than two hours to analyze their first round cases and prepare strategic solutions using no technology beyond overhead transparencies. In the final round, three teams presented to a live audience in the Drescher Auditorium on Pepperdine抯 graduate campus in Malibu. I am proud to have been a member of the winning team that designed an ethics-centered recommendation considering both financial and legal implications. My team was recognized by the Graziadio School Board of Visitors for epitomizing school values.

He Does Know Jack
By Keith Guilbault

Having a clown for a boss may not top the list of your dream job, but then again, you don't know Jack the way Pepperdine alumnus Keith Guilbault knows Jack.

As Division Vice President of Brand Innovation for Jack in the Box, Inc., Guilbault is responsible for the long-term planning, development, and execution of the company's marketing vision and future direction of the Jack in the Box brand. This includes capitalizing on existing and new market opportunities for one of the nation's leading hamburger chains.

And while Jack may be a fictional CEO, the company's commitment to redefine and lead the fast food industry is very real. 揟he board of directors made a decision to create this position to help the company be more aggressive and cutting edge to truly satisfy our customers' needs, said Guilbault. 揟he job is designed to help determine what Jack in the Box will look like in three to five years.

Build Your Network

Guilbault attributes securing his current position to the value of his MBA as well as nurturing a professional network. 揑 wouldn't classify myself as a great networker, however, I've built strong business relationships, observed Guilbault. 揈very one of my serious job opportunities have been directly linked to a network of friends, former coworkers, and former peers from the Graziadio School. One thing that Guilbault suggests is inherent in networking is the fact that you don't directly ask network contacts for a job, but rather you ask their advice. If they know of a job at their company, and think you are a good fit, they will bring it up, he advises.

One technique that Guilbault used successfully in networking was utilizing a two-page document that outlined: the type of position he felt he was qualified for (e.g., V.P. of Operations or V.P. of Franchising); listed his key competencies and skills; and included a sample of companies in the region and industry that held his interest. According to Guilbault, this document accomplished two things. First, it minimized any defensiveness of network contacts that he was asking them for a job. Second, it allowed his contacts to make suggestions on additional contacts they knew on his list. 揑t is then up to you to ask your contacts if they will give a heads-up call which gets you in the door, said Guilbault.

Build Your Track Record

To students and recent graduates alike, he suggests that a professional network is even more valuable when you have a strong track record. According to Guilbault, a positive reputation for getting the job done while working in a team environment makes it easier for members of your network to refer you to new job opportunities. Although his resume did not include food retail experience at the time of his hiring at Jack in the Box, Guilbault's reputation for being open-minded and a creative thinker helped get his foot in the door. 揃eing able to look at the glass half full and look beyond the obstacles to see possibilities is critical for a job in innovation, he said. When someone tells Guilbault it has never been done before, he thinks, 揟his may be an opportunity.

Leverage Your Education

Guilbault also points to his MBA degree as part of his success. His experience at the Graziadio School taught him how to effectively work in and lead diverse teams. In addition, he credits learning from his classmates' experiences and applying their expertise to his own industry. After graduation, he continued to stay in contact with peers from Pepperdine to help guide his career search which would include both a transition into a new industry and a move from the East to the West Coast.

When recruiting new hires, Guilbault follows his own advice and looks for a track record of success and a candidate's ability to articulate how he or she can impact the business. 揥hen I hire, I look at my leadership team and I see where this candidate may fit and what role he or she would play within the team. Guilbault also suggests that in today's marketplace achieving your goal may require you to work for a number of different companies. 揅onsider where you are today and what experience and skill will be necessary for you to achieve your career goals.

Finally, he suggests that job seekers be deliberate in their search. 揇o your homework on what you like to do and what type of culture would be a good fit. If I have someone in front of me who can't tell me why they want to work at Jack in the Box more than any other company in the fast food industry, it will be hard to win me over.

Which means you need to know Jack, too.

"I graduated from Pepperdine Graziadio School of Business & Management with my MBA in December 2003. My MBA gave me the knowledge and confidence to start my own consulting firm in Spring 2005, today it is thriving. I specialize in marketing, publishing and public relations. The GSBM way of teaching was instrumental in expanding my knowledge base, meeting lifelong friends to give me encouragement and sage counsel as well as provide an ongoing network of continuous education."

I co-authored a recently published book with George D. Wells, "The American Dream in a Kilt" - CEO Shares Secrets on Leadership, Life & Laughter. It is available on www.dreaminakilt.com and www.amazon.com.

New York Times Reports On Pepperdine's E2B Program

It's Good Advice, and the Price Is Right

marketing strategy for a chain of auto dealerships to Doreen
Shanahan, director of the university's Education to Business
program.

As a general rule, you can't get something for nothing. But there are exceptions, as the people at Ironclad Performance Wear discovered three years ago. Since starting up in 1998, the company in El Segundo, Calif., had made a splash selling work gloves that incorporate technology and materials usually used for, say, mountain climbing. But, the company also knew that to fuel growth, it would need to expand into highly specialized new markets. How best to determine the next step?

The answer was to tap the insights of an unconventional group of consultants. Instead of approaching the usual high-ticket McKinsey types, the company's vice president for sales and marketing, Kent Pachl, decided to try another source: a course for M.B.A.'s taught at the Graziadio School of Business and Management at nearby Pepperdine University. The course offered management consulting services to selected companies, free of charge.

After getting approval from the faculty, Mr. Pachl spent an hour explaining his problem to the class, which was divided into five teams. After 15 weeks, each group presented a proposal on what markets should be the company's focus and how to go about pursuing them.

After hearing their presentations, Mr. Pachl decided to further study two of the suggested industries - oil services and the military - and eventually, to go after them. Now, according to Mr. Pachl, about 10 percent of the company's $7 million in revenue is from sales to those areas, and he expects that number to rise to 25 percent over the next two years. The experience was such a success, in fact, that, last spring, Mr. Pachl worked on another project with a Pepperdine class, this time analyzing the most effective ways to distribute a new line of apparel. "The program's cost savings have meant we can spend more on launching the product, and less on paying consultants," he said.

Ironclad is not the only small business to take advantage of such services. While no exact numbers exist, well over 100 of the 900 graduate business schools in the country include for-credit courses in which students provide consulting services to companies, according to John Fernandes, chief executive of AACSB International - Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, in Tampa, Fla.

Not all the programs are free. But even the ones that come with a fee - the Kogod School of Business at American University, for example, charges companies $5,000 - can be a godsend for time- and cash-short small businesses looking for a helping hand. M.B.A. students work on anything from creating a new business plan to tackling succession issues, providing resources that many businesses "simply wouldn't have access to otherwise," said Doreen Shanahan, Pepperdine's Education to Business program director.

Why are so many M.B.A. schools doing this? Quite simply, the programs are a response to the wishes of employers who are looking to hire M.B.A.'s with more hands-on experience. "Companies need graduates to hit the ground running, to be better able to apply business theory immediately," Mr. Fernandes said.

At the same time, there's no cookie-cutter model for these programs. At Pepperdine, for example, as Mr. Pachl discovered, there's a competition, in which students all tackle a problem faced by the same company, dividing up into teams to devise a proposal. It is also a required course. On the other hand, American University has an elective, in which faculty members choose companies to work with, then advertise each project to students and select teams from applicants.

Occasionally, projects also develop from a professor's particular areas of interest. Four years ago, David Gay, a professor of economics at the Sam M. Walton College of Business Administration at the University of Arkansas, who studies the economics of the wine industry, decided the wineries in the area would make a good consulting project. So, he approached the Arkansas Wine Producers' Council, a group of five small family-owned wineries, about using his class to study how the industry could attract more tourism.

The companies agreed, and Professor Gay then worked with his students to divide the assignment into small pieces: marketing, legal issues, technology and the like. At the end of the semester, the class made a final presentation to the consortium, with suggestions ranging from starting a Web site to using so-called neck holders on bottles, with information about each wine.

In most cases, faculty or program administrators start off by working with companies to fine-tune the focus of the project. That is especially important for small businesses, according to the schools. "They're so stretched on multiple levels, they often come to us with extremely broad requests," said Robert Krapfel, associate professor of marketing at the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland. "My job is to home in and narrow the scope."

Consider Travis Schneider, founder of a three-year-old company, StarBrand Media, in Pacific Palisades, Calif., which provides an online shopping source for fashions and other products featured in television shows and movies. Last spring, he worked with Pepperdine's program to devise a marketing strategy, focusing on how to make the brand more interesting to consumer-products companies. But, when he first approached the school, "He just told us, he wanted to grow revenues," Ms. Shanahan said. Through a series of meetings, the two came up with a more narrow focus.

Not every small business that wants to participate in these programs is appropriate, however. Take the University of Arkansas. Situated down the road from the headquarters of Wal-Mart, it is surrounded by offices of major corporations, which provide the majority of the applicant pool. More important, participating businesses have to be facing a challenge appropriate for high-level analysis. In most cases, companies must also be past the start-up stage, with a product they have already brought to market.

Of course, there are downsides. A big one has to do with timing. "If a business needs advice tomorrow and it's springtime, they may be out of luck if the class isn't meeting until the fall," said James Nolen, senior lecturer in the finance department at the McCombs School of Business of the University of Texas at Austin. There's also the time commitment. Businesses have to be prepared to meet with students throughout the semester.

Another potential problem is the students' level of sophistication. Even those with a few years of work under their belt probably lack the experience and industry knowledge of a more conventional consultant.

Still, there are ways around some of these issues. To streamline the process, for example, a team usually picks one student to be the leader, responsible for funneling questions to a point person at the company.

Daniel Abraham took another tack. Mr. Abraham is the chief executive of Fortius One, a one-year-old firm based in Washington that provides analysis for business decisions involving geography. He recently worked with a team of students at the University of Maryland to study which of six specific vertical markets the company should enter. To make sure the students were as focused as possible, he kicked off the project by developing separate mission statements laying out the needs that each market had to address.

"If I didn't do that, I think it might have ended up being a waste of time," he said. Ultimately, according to Mr. Abraham, the students came up with many useful insights that helped the company decide which areas to focus on first.

Ultimately, many small businesses say the pros simply outweigh the cons. "We got some fresh ideas from a group of 20-somethings at a tremendous cost savings," Mr. Pachl said. "I've already told the school, next time they're looking for a new project to work on, we'll do it again."

The Power of First Impressions
By Carole Shaw White

Long before you抳e said 揾ello to a potential employer, you抳e already introduced yourself through your body language, clothing, attitude and demeanor. These subtle, nonverbal messages make up more than 70 percent of a conversation, and yet are often overlooked by job seekers today.

More than any other aspect of your professional life, your first impression is one area where you, and you alone, are in control. It takes practice to emerge looking like the accomplished, consummate professional you know yourself to be.

While an exemplary resume may qualify you as a candidate for a position, it is your non-verbal communication and personal marketing that ultimately will influence people抯 perception of you.

Every day is a marketing opportunity to be seen, recognized and remembered.

In an average day you will be seen by hundreds of people, yet you抣l only get to talk with a few. You don抰 know who has seen you, noticed you or remembered you for the right or wrong reasons. If you抮e always prepared to present yourself as a consummate business professional, your networking opportunities expand ten-fold.

Whether you are an undergraduate, an MBA candidate or are already progressing in your career, your professional image requires constant and consistent attention.

Top 10 Ways to Make Your Best First Impression:

Walk, talk and smile with confidence. The way you enter or exit a room, your posture and your handshake all convey your presence.
Maintain steady eye contact. If you wear glasses, choose a pair that expedites eye contact. The shape of your frames and lens color determine how people see you.
Select appropriate clothing. Select clothing styles that flatter your body and fit well梟ot too tight or baggy. Above all, make sure that your clothing is impeccably clean and well-pressed.
Wear colors that flatter your complexion and fit within different contexts. For example, a flame orange top or patterned sports shirt might be perfect for a barbeque, but it won抰 work well at the accounting firm where you might serve as an intern.
Find accessories that convey professionalism. Choose a watch, pen, or other jewelry that are tasteful and indicate you should be taken seriously.
Display positive facial expressions and gestures. Look in the mirror and see how you respond to others comments and gestures. You might be surprised how your feelings may be conveyed.
Practice positioning. How you use personal space, whether you stand too close or too far from others, sends a strong message about your confidence and comfort level.
Moderate your tone of voice. Distinguish yourself by how you talk, neither too loud nor too soft. Enunciate and project.
Use scent carefully. A subtle, pleasant scent will create a comfortable mood and positive image.
Be an active listener. If you talk constantly, others may assume you抮e nervous, insecure or immature. By listening to what others have to say, you show that you抮e interested and confident.
You are unique. There isn抰 a pre-packaged image that you can 憄ut on. However, as you work toward realizing your highest career goals, it is essential that you begin now to develop a personal marketing strategy. The corporate world is waiting for you, and opportunities abound. Will you be ready?

A report on Education: MBA programs attract more men
By Dana Knight and Jennifer Kung

It is our pleasure to post the following information from Pepperdine Univeristy - Graziadio School of Business and Management:

Indianapolis Star
August 21, 2006

MBA doesn't stand for men of business administration, but a survey of master's of business administration programs shows the student body definitely has a masculine appearance. About two-thirds of the MBA population is male, according to a July study from the American Council on Education.*1

But the outlook for women is changing in other master's degree programs. At the graduate level, the study showed, women have a slight majority in enrollment in medicine (51 percent) and other health science professional programs (53 percent). Overall, women make up 58 percent of total graduate-level enrollment.

So why are men taking up more than 66 percent of MBA slots? Linda Livingstone, the business school dean at Pepperdine University, says programs need to do more to appeal to female candidates by offering more flexible programs, hours and locations.*2

Sink or Swim: New Job, New Boss, 12 Weeks to Get it Right
By Thuy Sindell PhD and Milo Sindell

Starting a new job in the not so distant future or thinking about hiring someone? Here are some startling statistics:

About 25% of all new hires won't make it through their first year (Employment Policy Foundation).
Almost half - 46% - of rookies wash out in the first 18 months (Leadership IQ).
53% of managers and executives brought on board from outside are gone within a year, according HR consultants (Development Dimensions International).
Ouch! What happened? Here are three major causes of new employee failure that are hot issues whether you are fresh out of college or on your third VP assignment in fifteen years:

New employees isolate themselves through the perception that they can demonstrate results faster on their own as opposed to focusing on quickly establishing relationships and a network of coworkers at various levels and throughout the company.
New employees fail to decipher the culture of their new company including how to tailor their communication, image and contribution in a way that it will have positive impact.
New employees fail to confirm and define what success looks like with their managers or the board. The eagerness to quickly demonstrate competence and results overshadows the critical need to clearly define success metrics and expectations.
Here is what can you should do to start off on the right foot and stay in step:

Define Success: Whether you are working on your first big assignment or initiating your 10th cross-company initiative in five years, it is crucial that you have confirmed with your boss the exact results of your work.
Understand Your Environment: In order to make a lasting positive contribution that gets noticed and has impact you must first understand the unique traits of the culture and create a plan that ensures that the culture will support your objectives.
Identify Your Contribution and What You Want In Return: When you are clear on what you contribute and what you want in exchange for your contribution your job becomes a place of opportunity and your work has new meaning and significance.
Continually Expand and Reinforce Your Network: An ever expanding network is vital to not only getting day to day activities done but critical to large strategic initiatives when collaboration and support is needed from individuals across the company.
Look the Part: No matter if your new job is in the corner office or your first break in the stockroom, you need to convey the right professional image. The right professional image is a combination of how you dress, groom, communicate, and behave. If you are already in the corner office, the right professional image will help keep you there. If you are just starting out, the right professional image will help you stand out and communicate that you are competent and serious about your success.
About the authors: Thuy Sindell PhD and Milo Sindell are authors of the ground breaking book for new employees: Sink or Swim: New Job, New Boss, Twelve Weeks to get it Right (Adams Media). They are also founders of Hit The Ground Running LLC, which offers comprehensive solutions for new employee integration and employee engagement. Visit www.HitTheGroundRunning.com. Milo is a 1995 graduate of the Pepperdine MSOD program.

HR's Strategic Partnership with Line Management
Human Resources plays an important, strategic role in supporting organizations.
Robert Fulmer, PhD and Steven Genson, MBA

Although many HR functions have begun to play a strategic role in guiding succession management, knowledge retention, and other enterprise-wide initiatives, there is still opportunity for such functions to improve and truly transform key influencers and decision-makers. The pressing need for organizations to maintain a diverse pool of talented leaders, capture expertise from exiting employees, and outsource transactional activities to focus on core capabilities has heightened the importance of the HR function.

Business Survival Skills
What lessons can be learned from a year of natural disasters?
Jaime Michaelson, MBA and David M. Smith, PhD

In the wake of the extraordinarily destructive 2005 Gulf Coast hurricane season (roughly from June to November), U.S. businesses are now more aware of the wide variety of perils they may be exposed to on a daily basis. These risks can be related to economic, technological, political, or even biological forces. Some such risks may be controllable, while others are not. Consider the impact that events as unrelated as a global epidemic, a spike in exchange rates, a war, labor strikes, a computer virus, crime waves, or an earthquake could have on any given business or industry. Not only does the possibility of such perils impact companies directly, but the increased speed of economic activity and response to such events also make ever more relevant the risks borne by business partners and strategic allies.

Six Components of a Model for Workplace Spirituality
The idea of pursuing spirituality in the workplace has grown from fad to trend within many organizations.
Kent Rhodes, EdD

Workplace spirituality has continued to gain acceptance as a topic of study in business schools across the country, presumably with application to practice within organizations. Though initially the topic of spirituality in the workplace may have been viewed as a passing fad, it now seems to have reached trend status. Management textbooks routinely include sections about workplace spirituality, and professional organizations such as the Academy of Management offer membership in special interest groups emphasizing spirituality.

Obesity, Social Responsibility, and Economic Value
When the public became more aware of the impact of obesity and health concerns, people reacted with different purchasing choices.
Donald Atwater, PhD and Shizuka Suzuki

Market change and social change are processes that become intertwined over time. An interesting but unanswerable question is whether economic change leads to social change or vice versa. In this article, a case is made that social issues can present businesses with opportunities to increase economic performance.

Graziadio Faculty Discuss Ethics
Are there rules to ethical conduct?
Linnea McCord, JD, Mark Mallinger, PhD, Kurt Motamedi, PhD, Steven M. Sommer, PhD, Ray Valadez, EdD, Ariane David, PhD

The state of ethics in America today is of grave concern to many people. In the past decade it seems corporate scandals, media fabrication, student cheating, and disreputable conduct have become common occurrences rather than abnormal behavior. Several members of the Graziadio faculty recently engaged in a hearty dialogue on ethics in America and about teaching ethics to students.
