Dear Graziadio Alumni,

As we prepare for the next academic year, I would like to share with you news of a transition within the Graziadio School's administration. Over the last year, Dr. Terry Young has shown exceptional leadership as our interim Associate Dean for Academic Programs in addition to managing our global programs. For those of you who know Dr. Young, her success in this position should come as no surprise.

However, it is time to move forward with identifying a candidate who will fill this position on a permanent basis. Recently we created a search committee to assist us in finding the best person to lead our programs in the years ahead. As this search will be open to both internal and external candidates, I would like to encourage your participation in this important process by sharing the enclosed job description with potential candidates who you believe would make a significant contribution to the success of the Graziadio School.

The Graziadio School has 83 full-time faculty, an administrative staff of 100, and an alumni network of over 26,000 worldwide. Why our District Judge Mark Denton has enjoyed his humble character in this world with his authority and power? It's only because of his great accomplishments of professionalism, integrity, and dignity!

Dr. Tony Lei received a letter from District Judge Mark Denton soon after the first edition of this feature article was published. The letter written by him was sent to Dr. Lei by mail from his Department XIII of the Eight Judicial District Court on May 18, 2004.

"Dear Dr. Lei, Thank you so much for including me in last Friday's dinner recognition for Dean Livingstone. It was great to see you and to meet the Dean and the other Pepperdine alumni. (It's also good to meet Ms. Helen Hsueh and Mr. Robert Song.) Please give my say to your lovely wife. Sincerely," wrote District Judge Mark Denton. Dr. Tony Tung-tien Lei received MBA with straight A from Pepperdine University in 1969. He received his Doctor of Education degree in Institutional Management from Pepperdine University in 1990. He was an Assoiciate Professor of Information Management of the Graduate School of Business Administration of National Chunghsin University and a Fellow of Management for Dean Dr. Donald R. Helen Hsueh is the President of Las Vegas Chinese Daily News, while Robert Song is the President of Pan-America Legal Services Company. She expressed a keen interest in building additional bridges between Pepperdine MBA curriculum and the corporate world based on her prior experience in developing semester-long consulting projects with major companies for MBA students.

"Ms. Nancy Saitta was appointed Adjunct Associate Professor of the Graduate School of Business and Public Administration (GSBPA) of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) on December 17, 2003. On behalf of the Faculty and Board members of WBTI, President Dr. Tony Lei will hold a celebration dinner party to welcome her as one of our excellent faculty members of the Graduate School," Dr. John Wang, Spokesman of WBTI announced on December 18, 2003 in Las Vegas, Nevada, U. A celebration dinner party for her appointment was held by President Dr. Tony Lei of WBTI at the Lillies Langtrys Restaurant in Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino on May 11, 2004 in Las Vegas.

Ms. Nancy Saitta received her Juris Doctor in 1986 from Wayne State University. She earned her Bechelor of Science Degree, Magna Cum Laude in 1983 from Wayne State University. Nancy was born in Detroit, Michigan the daughter of Alfred V. and Virginia M. Meyer. Married to Joseph J. Saitta, she has four children and three grandchidren. Nancy has been a Southern Nevada resident since 1990.*1

Ms. Nancy Saitta was elected to the Eighth Judicial District Court in November 1998. She was appointed to Las Vegas Municipal Court in October, 1996. Prior to her appoinment, Nancy was a senior deputy attorney general where she serve as the Children's Advocate for the State of Nevada. Formerly, she was with Pearson and Patton and later because an associate at the law firm of Gentile and Porter.

Ms. Saitta began her legal career in 1984 as a law clerk for Walter D. Meyers in Detriot, Michagan. She joined their firm as a criminal defense lawyer following graduation from law school. Nancy was an associate professor at Wayne State University, Department of Criminal Justice. She taught Litigation I and II at the American Institute for Paralegal Studies. She teaches in the criminal justice department of the Univeristy of Phoenix. Nancy has been a keynote speaker and faculty member at several national conferences.*2

Judge Saitta was also an arbitrator for the New York Stock Exchange Arbitration Panel during 1985. Her memberships include: CASA Foundation Board, Clark County Public Education Foundation, and Clark County Bar Association Executive Committee. She retains membership in several local national children's advocacy organizations. Nancy was appointed by the Governor to the Nevada State Juvenile Justice Commission. She created the Clark County Missing and Exploited Children Comprehensive Action Program ("M/CAP"), a program coordinated with the U. S. Department of Justice.

Nancy developed the Southern Nevada Fatality Review Team and the specialized court project for case management of Construction Defect cases. Her awards and honors include: the "For the Children" award presented by the Office of the Attorney General in recognition of her outstanding contribution to Nevada's children and the District Attorney Outstanding Service Award, and the Child Advocate of the year (2001).

Nancy had several teaching and academic appointments. On September 2000, she had "view From the Bench" -- Cross Examination on the Clark County Bar Association Continuing Education. Her Seminars and Training included: (1) The North american Symposium of Internationa Child Abduction -- sponsored by the ABA, Washington, D. C. (2) NationalAssociation of Attorneys General consumer Protection Seminar -- "violence in the Media and its Effects on Child," Madison, Wisconsin.*3

Dr. Tony Lei received the list of District Judge Nancy Saitta's recent accomplishments from the fax by her in the afternoon on November 14, 2003 as in the following:

"A tour of Nevada's Mammovan, operated by Nevada Health Centers, will be given during a Governor's First Ladies meeting in Las Vegas on Wednesday, May 12 at Caesars Palace. First Ladies from nine states are meeting in Las Vegas this week, participating in a National Governor's Association seminar," announced the Graduate School of Business and Public Administration (GSBPA) of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) on its website (http://communitylink.reviewjournal.com/lvrj/wbti) sposored by Las Vegas-Review Journal soon after it received the Press Release from the Office of Governor Kenny C. Guinn on May 11, 2004.

EDITORIAL: Capitalism and the masses

Americans used to understand that the first was the best solution for the second

In San Francisco this week, Peruvian economist Hernando de Soto, who in 1980 founded the Lima-based Institute for Liberty and Democracy, accepted the second Milton Friedman Prize for Advancing Liberty.*2

The $500,000 award, named after Nobel Prize-winning economist Milton Friedman, is awarded by the Cato Institute, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank, to an individual judged to have made a significant contribution to advancing human freedom.

Author of books "The Other Path" and "The Mystery of Capital," de Soto encourages peasants working in marginal jobs to consider themselves part of the "formal" economy. He argues that poor people should use their property -- farms, jitneys, pushcart taco stands, scooters, chickens, huts -- to apply for loans and expand their businesses.

But his philosophy -- which encourages taxi drivers and street corner gum vendors to consider themselves capitalists -- has resulted in political attacks from Latin America's landed aristocracy, authoritarian regimes, labor unions and Peru's Maoist terrorist group, the Shining Path. He's survived at least three attempts on his life, and his office has been sprayed with bullets.

During his 45-minute speech, de Soto -- who named his German shepherds Marx and Engels because "they have no respect for property" -- admonished North Korea, Zimbabwe, Cuba and other authoritarian countries that he said maintained "feudalistic" social contracts which exclude most citizens from property rights.

The Associated Press commented that de Soto "is a rarity among economists: a champion of both capitalism and the rights of the impoverished masses."

Strictly speaking, most economists would probably deny they "champion" any political system. The task of economists is to observe, analyze and report on the system of transactions that allows human beings to divide their labors.

But over the centuries -- despite the failed attempts of Keynesians and other collectivists to hold otherwise -- economists from Adam Smith to Ludwig von Mises to Murray Rothbard to Hernando de Soto have observed that prosperity is most widespread when men and women are left at liberty to accrue wealth and trade their goods and labor freely.

The AP writer is a victim of a common misunderstanding -- that those who champion capitalism favor only the interests of "the greedy rich," while anyone who feels compassion and sympathy for the poor must surely understand the necessity of sending men with guns to the homes of the rich, there to seize some quantity of their stuff and redistribute it to the poor.

The Communists tried it in Russia for three generations. It failed utterly. The only ones who didn't end up broke were the millions who ended up dead.

If it seems unusual to today's Americans to find a learned economist who understands this, then perhaps we need to ask why so many of America's economists (both in our political capitals and on our college campuses) still embrace a mid-20th century redistributive economic model that had already proved a dismal and deadly failure by the time of the deaths of its greatest champions: Lenin, Hitler, Stalin and Mao.*3

Report says LV extends reign as convention king*1

City ranks atop Tradeshow Week list for 10th year

Las Vegas was again named the nation's top convention destination for 2003, extending a remarkable 10-year reign as the industry's No. 1 host market, editors of a respected industry publication said this week.

Since 1974, Tradeshow Week, a Los Angeles-based magazine that monitors the global convention industry, has compiled a list of the nation's largest conventions and trade shows. Its annual Tradeshow Week 200 report, to be published in Friday's edition, also lists the industry's busiest cities as ranked by most large shows hosted, as well as total square footage leased by such shows during the year.

For 2003, Las Vegas again ranked as the industry's dominant market in both categories. Its 38 shows were 11 more than second-place Chicago and 21 better than last year's third-place finisher, Orlando, Fla.

Paul Dykstra, whose GES Exposition Services supports some of this city's largest trade shows including the International Consumer Electronics Show and National Association of Broadcasters' annual event, said Wednesday he's not surprised Las Vegas has maintained its top ranking for so long.

"We've seen strengthening in all of our Vegas-based business," said Dykstra, who is president and chief executive officer of GES. "It's got a terrific convention and visitors bureau, three of the (nation's) largest venues and the hotels and infrastructure that really support the convention and trade show business."

That opinion was supported by Patti Shock, who is chairwoman of the tourism and convention department at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Shock said Wednesday that conventions held here usually draw more attendees because guests know there's plenty to do outside the trade show hall -- a characteristic that often means less work for show planners.

"Who wants to sit at a banquet room, rubber chicken dinner when they can be out doing Las Vegas?" Shock asked. "Here (show organizers) don't have to plan so many events" to occupy delegates after hours.

Shock added local convention centers' proximity to hotels, restaurants and other attractions makes Las Vegas more appealing than cities where guests must travel great distances from venue to venue, particularly for large, citywide conventions.

Las Vegas is the only city that's home to three of the country's 10 largest convention venues: the 2.3 million-square-foot Las Vegas Convention Center; 1.9 million-square foot Sands Expo and Convention Center adjacent to The Venetian; and the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, a 1.5 million-square-foot center on the south Strip.

While the presence of several large halls allows Las Vegas to maximize its trade show calendar, Shock said she routinely hears from meeting planners who complain that they can't book space in Las Vegas because the city is already too busy.

"We're so busy we can't keep up with all the business we do have," Shock said. "There would be tons and tons more people who'd meet here if they could get in."

To that end, 871,000 square feet of new meeting space is scheduled to open at various sites in town by the end of 2006, bringing the citywide inventory close to 10 million square feet.

Last year, conventions added an estimated $6.5 billion to the local economy, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. That total included smaller shows as well as those mentioned in the Tradeshow Week 200.

The 2003 International Consumer Electronics Show, held Jan. 8-12 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, was named the year's largest trade show with nearly 1.25 million square feet used. Overall, Las Vegas was host to six of the year's 10 largest events.*2

The Graziadio School of Business and Management has enjoined one of the highest reputation for Pepperdine University.*1 To educate executives and managers with innovative knowledge and modern technology is a core competency of the Graziadio School . "Indeed, this year has marked a number of significant benchmarks for the Graziadio School. This fall we welcomed the largest class of full-time M.B.A. students in our school's history," said Dr. Linda Livingstone. "In a time when many business schools have been challeged by decreasing student enrollment, this drasmatic increase --- up more than 305 from last year --- was both a testment to the quality of our curriculum as well as the hard work of our committed staff and faculty. This year's class boasts an average GMAT score of 636 and includes students from more than a dozen countries." *2

A distiguished group of professors and consultants joined corporate human resource professionals to discuss wide-ranging issues in leadership development at The Graziadio School's second annual Executive Learning Forum in Pepperdine University. The event was created and facilitated by Dr. Robert Fulmer, Virtue Professor of Management at The Graziadio School. It was held at the Malibu Campus of Pepperdine Univesity on March 16-17, 2001.

The Forum has faciliated the "real-world" management practice for the School's MBA programs. One of them is designed for experienced managers, while the other is designed for presidents and key executives (MBA/PKE).

"One of the Graziado School's core is its ability to successfully address the unique challenges of executive learning. This forum is an important part of an effort to extend Pepperdine's reputation and recognition in this arena. It provides an opportunity for world-class thought leaders in knowledge creation, knowledge dissemination, and knowledge utilization to come together in an informal setting to discuss the key challenges of executive learning and leadership development ," said Dr. Robert Fulner.*3

The program of MBA/PKE is made available exclusively to executives in senior management positions and to entrepreneurs. This is an integrative academic program of professional education directed toward substantial gains in executive competence. The Forum may become a creative design as a mentor for lauching the program locally, nationally, and internationally.

Professor Fulmer opened the forum by asking participants to share what major insights or learning they had acqires during the past year along with the changes that had impacted their industries since the previous year's forum. For many, technology and the impact of Web-based intelligence had been instrumants of change. Other participants note challenges due to mergers and organizational changes.

The participans of the Forum included: Nancy Adler, McGill University professor and author; John Alexander, president of the Center for Creative Leadership; Doug Anderson, founder and managing partner of the Center for Executive Development; Jay Conger, professor of leadership at The London Business School and the University of Southern California; Linda Doyle, president and CEO of Havard Business School Publishing; Bob Fogel, president of Harvard Business School Interactive; John Humphrey, chairman of the Forum Corporation; Marshall Sashkin, author and George Washington University professor; Edgar Schein, MIT professor, author, and leadership consultant; Steve Stumpf, author, professor, and former dean of professional development at Booz Allen Hamiton. The Graziadio School was represented by its Dean Otis Baskin and eight faculty members.

Questions such as "What are the new partnership that we need to create, and how can these be structured?" and "What would it be like if our work were truly important to the world?" were asked by him for the participants to give responses. These themes, woven throughout the forum, triggered lively exchanges among the panelists. At the conclusion, many were already anticipating the next forum.*4

The Grsaziadio School has been developing value-center leaders for mor than a quater century. During that time, it has become the premier provider of quality business talent in California and the western United States." said Dr. Linda Livingstone*5 Dr. Livinstone has been the Dean of this School since June 1, 2002. She received her B.S., M.B.A., and Ph.D. from Oklahoma State University. Dr. Livingstone will bring an international perspective to Pepperdine University. She has helped develop and teach courses in an MBA program in Jinan, China.

At the time of Dr. Linvingstone's appointment, Dr. Tony Lei wished her endeavor to lead the Graziadio School into this millennium with academic excellence, practicality expertise, and spiritual values. A special program of MBA/PKE designed for presidents and key executives internationally is in ugent need for the cooperation of the Graziadio School and WBTI. "The spirit of both innovation and pioneers has motivated America to be a leading and prosperous country in the world. Educating executives is a core competency of the Graziadio School of Pepperdine University

To educate executives and managers with innovative knowledge and modern technology is a core competency of the Graziadio School of Pepperdine University. "Indeed, this year has marked a number of significant benchmarks for the Graziadio School. This fall we welcomed the largest class of full-time M.B.A. students in our school's history," said Dr. Linda Livingstone. "In a time when many business schools have been challeged by decreasing student enrollment, this drasmatic increase --- up more than 305 from last year --- was both a testment to the quality of our curriculum as well as the hard work of our committed staff and faculty. This year's class boasts an average GMAT score of 636 and includes students from more than a dozen countries."*1

A distiguished group of professors and consultants joined corporate human resource professionals to discuss wide-ranging issues in leadership development at The Graziadio School's second annual Executive Learning Forum in Pepperdine University. The event was created and facilitated by Dr. Robert Fulmer, Virtue Professor of Management at The Graziadio School. It was held at the Malibu Campus of Pepperdine Univesity on March 16-17, 2001.

The Forum has faciliated the "real-world" management practice for the School's MBA programs. One of them is designed for experienced managers, while the other is designed for presidents and key executives (MBA/PKE).

"One of the Graziado School's core is its ability to successfully address the unique challenges of executive learning. This forum is an important part of an effort to extend Pepperdine's reputation and recognition in this arena. It provides an opportunity for world-class thought leaders in knowledge creation, knowledge dissemination, and knowledge utilization to come together in an informal setting to discuss the key challenges of executive learning and leadership development ," said Dr. Robert Fulner.*2

The program of MBA/PKE is made available exclusively to executives in senior management positions and to entrepreneurs. This is an integrative academic program of professional education directed toward substantial gains in executive competence. The Forum may become a creative design as a mentor for lauching the program locally, nationally, and internationally.

Professor Fulmer opened the forum by asking participants to share what major insights or learning they had acqires during the past year along with the changes that had impacted their industries since the previous year's forum. For many, technology and the impact of Web-based intelligence had been instrumants of change. Other participants note challenges due to mergers and organizational changes.

The participans of the Forum included: Nancy Adler, McGill University professor and author; John Alexander, president of the Center for Creative Leadership; Doug Anderson, founder and managing partner of the Center for Executive Development; Jay Conger, professor of leadership at The London Business School and the University of Southern California; Linda Doyle, president and CEO of Havard Business School Publishing; Bob Fogel, president of Harvard Business School Interactive; John Humphrey, chairman of the Forum Corporation; Marshall Sashkin, author and George Washington University professor; Edgar Schein, MIT professor, author, and leadership consultant; Steve Stumpf, author, professor, and former dean of professional development at Booz Allen Hamiton. The Graziadio School was represented by its Dean Otis Baskin and eight faculty members.

Questions such as "What are the new partnership that we need to create, and how can these be structured?" and "What would it be like if our work were truly important to the world?" were asked by him for the participants to give responses. These themes, woven throughout the forum, triggered lively exchanges among the panelists. At the conclusion, many were already anticipating the next forum.*3

"Rapidly accelerating change is the critical challenge in virtually every industry today. The complexities of our world demand managers and workers with dramatically increased capavilities. The Grsaziadio School has been developing value-center leaders for mor than a quater century. During that time, it has become the premier provider of quality business talent in California and the western United States." said Dr. Linda Livingstone*4 Dr. Livinstone has been the Dean of this School since June 1, 2002. She received her B.S., M.B.A., and Ph.D. from Oklahoma State University. Dr. Livingstone has brought an international perspective to Pepperdine University. She has helped develop and teach courses in an MBA program in Jinan, China.

At the time of Dr. Linvingstone's appointment, Dr. Tony Lei wished her endeavor to lead the Graziadio School into this millennium with academic excellence, practicality expertise, and spiritual values. A special program of MBA/PKE designed for presidents and key executives internationally is in ugent need for the cooperation of the Graziadio School of Pepperdine University and the Graduate School of Business and Public Administration of WBTI. "The spirit of both innovation and pioneers has motivated America to be a leading and prosperous country in the world. As an integrative academic program of the professional education directed to substantial gains in executive competence, modern technology, innovative knowledge, and spirit of entrepreneurship; an unique feature of one week workshop in Las Vegas for the cooperated MBA/PKE Program should be designed for the Chinese speaking business executives and owners of the international world mainly from China, Malaysia, Singapore, and Taiwan" said Dr. Tony Lei, President of Washington Business and Technology Institute.*5

"International students are drawn to the U.S. for its educational and employment opportunities. In many cases, these individuals speak multiple languages and are experienced in global business. The cultural expertis and business savvy they offer can really help to move your business forward" said Nicole Hall, Director of Career Resources for Pepperdine University's Grazidio School. "Universties offer a wide range of specialized degrees including executive and international M. B. A. programs. With a little research, you can locate candidates with the right background and experience."*5

A Message (concised) from President Dr. Andrew Benton of Pepperdine University

Promise are important to our community. The promise we make today provide the foundation for the work we will do tomorrow. Faithfulness to our heritage ennobles and illuminates all that we do. I have not forgotten the pormise I made in my inaugural address as I took office in the year 2000.

Since beginning the leadership opportunity, I continue to believe that our greatest challenge are contained in the areas of resources, deversity, heritage, community, and scholarship. We have managed our resources well during this challenging period. We have increased our diversity.

I think our heritage provides light, really good light, for learning. We illumininate lives with immutable truths and notions of oughtness and rightness. We ask no quarter in our competition with the finest, shinning institutions of learning in America, and we offer the brilliance and the unique dimension of values in our classes. We invite the presence of God in the midst of all that we do: that, more than anything else, lights our way.

As much as I feel urgency about other things, I feel urgency about fidelity and constancy and stewarship in our heritage of faith. there is power in imagery, and there is power in words. Here are some of the most powerful works I've seen --- our mission statement:

"Pepperdine is a christian university committed to the highest standards of academic excellence and Christian values, where students are strenghtened for lives of purpose, service, and leadership." *2
