We Need More Care for Our Community By Tiffany Chang On March 29, 1999, Dr. Tony T. Lei presented in the Senior Advisory committee Meeting, which was held by Congresswoman Shelley Berkley, at the AARP Room of Howard Cannon Senior Center. The agenda included: A. Congresswoman Berkley's Legislative Priorities for Seniors: (1) Strengthening our Nation's Social Security & Medicare Programs. (2) Prescription Drug Coverage for Older Americans. (3) Health Care Reform and Patient Pretection Legislation. B. End of the Year "Wrap-up" of the 106th Congress. C. Open Discussion: How to Best Serve Nevada Senior & Goals for the Second Session of the 106th Congress. A list of the key votes by Congresswoman Shelley Berkley for the protecting & strenghtening social security was also presented to the meeting by her. for examples: (1) On January 6, 1999, her very first day as our Representative, she voted for a rule to bar the spending of any Social Security Trust Fund monies for any purpose other than Social Security. (2) On March 2, 1999, she voted for the Social Security Guarantee Initiative Resolution to strengthen and to protect the retirement income security of all Americans through the creation of a fair and modern Social Security Program for the 21st century. Dr. Tony T. Lei, Member of the Congresswoman Shelley Berkley's Seniors Advisory Board, is pleased to spread the word of five main accomplishments of the U.S. Representative: (1) 1000,000 new teacher initiative - recognizing the severe shortage of teachers in the Clark County School District, Rep. Berkley fought all year long for more teachers. Joining hundreds of her colleagues and President in a united front, the Rep. Berkley helped secure $7 million for 178 new teachers for Nevada. (2) Save Nevada from nuclear waste dump. (3) Improving Southern Nevada's highways. (4) Building safe and livable communitiesfor Nevada - Rep. Berkley fought for and won $29 million to protect Southern Nevada from floods which could save hundreds of million in future flood damage not to mention protential loss of life. She also helped secure more police officers for our streets. (5) Protecting our environment - Rep. Berkley helped secure federal funding to clean up Lake Mead and the Las Vegas Wash, keep Las Vegas' water supply healthy, and make our air more breathable by moving away from diesel buses toward cleaner fuel alternatives. Rep. Berkley also helped secure $470 million to buy scenic or environmentally sensitive land threatened by development. U. S. Congresswoman Berkley has good performance on community participation since her campaign for her election last year. The Faculty of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) have been encouraged by her supporting as one of our Executive Advisor of our Institute since February, 1997. President Dr. Lei of WBTI informs its concerned Asian, Pacific, and Hispanic communities that a fax to him from U.S. Senator Harry Reid in Washington, D.C. was received on December 10, 1999. Sen. Reid is Assistant Minority Leader of the Senate. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! By Tiffany ChangOn December 8, 1999, a reunion dinner party of the Directors of Board of South Shores community Association was held at the Summit Restaurant in Summerlin. The presented members and their wives were: Mr. and Mrs. Robert Beveridge, Dr. and Mrs. Tony Lei, Mr. and Mrs. Gary Lein, and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Sample. Ann Berard of Terra West Property Management and Jennine Gibbens, staff of the Association also participated. Dr. Lei and his family moved to Las Vegas on August 6, 1003. At the Annual Meeting of Delegates held on December 6, 1993, he was elected Director of the Board. Through a competitive election, Dr. Lei was elected Director again on December, 1994 by the highest votes of the whole community because of his sincere and effective work performance. He has been re-elected Director on December, 1996 and on December, 1998. Dr. lei has worked six years as Member of the Directors Board of this Association with concrete contribution to the benefits of the residents and homeowners of the community. As a result of the dedicated efforts of the Directors of Board working to improve the benefits of the community and the property value of homeowners, this Association was honored the Association of the Year by CAI in 1998. Donna Marinaccio of Terra West is its Management Agent. A Luncheon Event , for the Senior of the Quarter Program, was held by Las Vegas Senior Citizens' Advisory Board (LVSCAB) at the Showboat Hotel on December 9, 1999. LVSCAB has held Senior Quarter Luncheon continuouslly for many years. The Board has this for the recognition of seniors of Las Vegas who have made a differentce and contribution in our community. The Showboat Hotel has been proud to be the sponsor of the luncheon. The winner of the Senior of the Quarter for December, 1999 was Delories Gullickson. Members of the Board Tony Bruges, Joseph Bider, Jerry Kosbab, Dr. Tony Lei, Ed. D., Patti Swager, and Department Liaison Sydell MacKay presented. Tony Dazzio and Sydell MacKay were the MC. "Las Vegas Senior Citizen' Advisory Board developed this program for two reasons; (1) To encourage seniors to make life better for others through volunteer work. (2) To recognize these very special citizens," said Dr. Lei. "Every three months the Board selects a senior who has voluntarily contributed to the Las Vegas commuhity to receive this award. The contribution may include efforts made in the individual's church, school, senior center or any community program." To be eligible for nomination to this program, candidates must: (1) Be at least 55 year old. (2) Reside in Clark County. Dr. Lei did recommend the President of Thai Cultural Arts Association of Las Vegas to compete with others for the honor in June, 1998. Dr. Lei's recommendation realized the President's dream to have the award which named June 11 the Sapatra Chemprachum Day by the City and Council of Las Vegas. Seniors United Held a Happy Holiday Event By Taffany Chang The Seniors United (SU) had a Christmas and Chanukah celebrating party on December 8, 1999 at the West Flamingo Senior Center, Las Vegas. The presented Advisory Board members of SU were: Dr. Tony Lei, Judy Lei, Denis Brodsky, and Jackie Seip. The attended Executive Board members were: Paul Burr, Maria Manning, William Lackey, Mae Kipnis, Ellen Freas, Richard Denison, and Henry Kipnis. There were many important guests: Nancy Saitta, Barbara Cegavske, Mark Manendo, Genie Ohrenschall, Michelle Fitzpatrick, Jessie Walsh, Bobby G. Gronauer, Laura Fitzpatrick, Judy Vandever, Sheri Vogel, Natalie Tyrrell, Janice Miller (for U.S. Senator Harry Reid), Judith Ray (for U.S.Congressman Jim Gibbons), Denis Brodsky (for Clark County Vice-Chair Erin Kenny), Sonya Douglass (for Las Vegas Councilwoman Lynette McDonald), U.S. Congresswoman Shelley Berkely's mother, George Gilbert and his mother, Nadia Contreras, Y. W. Chiao, Jackson Chao, Alan Poon, among others. Because of the traffic reason, the traditional Thai dances brought to the party by the President of TCAALV were a little late. All the people were very excited and interesting to watch the three special dances with beautiful costumes. Dr. Lei thanked the contribution of TCAALV to offer such an enjoyable entertainment for our seniors. The forum and party were held by President and CEO of SU, Lillian and Julian Wallace. Paul Burr and Ellen Freas were the MC. Vice-Chair and Commissioner of Clark County Erin Kenny owns a great deal of good personal traits in political and business world: Appearance, popularlity, sociability, originality, judgement, aggresiveness, desire to excel, humour, cooperativeness, liveliness, athletic ability, and height. She is now working for her Juris Doctor (J. D.) degree at UNLV. She brought the Highlight to the nationwide Event of Fil-Am Chamber of Commerce (FACC) on December 5, 1999 at the Monte Carlo Resort and Casino. She annouced that a proclamation of Clark County was giving to Dr. Tony T. Lei, Ed. D. of Pepperdine Univewrsity, by its Board of Commissioners. She stated that the Board of County Commissioners honors and recognizes an distinguished scholar, Dr. Tony Lei for his outstanding performance in academic achievevement and social service. Following by nice dinner, induction, and awards, the Event was continued by a lot of arts performances and the night social dance. Presenters of the Event were full the hall with high rank governmental officials, organizational leaders, and business executives both from local and out of the state. One of the important functions of Washington Business and Technology Institute is to spread the word for the benefits of our residents and communities. We have done those by spreading the word from U.S. Senator Harry Reid, U.S. Congresswoman Shelley Berkely, Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa, among others. Vice-Chair Erin Kenny and District Judge Mark Denton Made Heighlight of FACC Event By Tiffany Chang The Formal Dinner Induction and Awards Night was held by Fil-Am Chamber of Commerce of Las Vegas at Monte Carlo Resort on December 5, 1999. The Event was co-sponsored by Clark County and Washington Business & Technology Institute. Clark County Vice-Chair Erin Kenny and Nevada District Judge Mark Denton were invited by Dr. Tony Lei to present awards and induce directors. Dr. Tony Lei was presented with a Proclamation by Vice-Chair Erin Kenny from Clark County. The Proclamation was signed and given by the Honorable Clark County Board of Commissioners: Chairman Bruce L. Woodbury, Vice-Chair Erin Kenny, Commissioners Yvonne Atkinson Gates, Mary J. Kinkaid, Lance M. Malone, Myrna Williams, and Dario Herrara. It stated: "WHEREAS, it is the policy and pleasure of the Board of County Commissioners to honor and recognize those extraordinary individuals, group, or programs, which enrich the lives of many in our community; and "WHEREAS, Dr. Tony T. Lei, Ed. D., a resident of Clark County for more than six years, has served our community through a variety of venues including: President of the Washington Business and Technology Institute; Adviser for Information Integration Inc.; Director for the South Shores Community Association; Chairman of the Chinese American Academic Association; Member of the Las Vegas Senior Citizens' Advisory Board; First Advisor for Seniors United; and Member of U. S. Representative Shelley Berkley's Seniors Advisory Board. "WHEREAS, Dr. Lei has given freely of his time, energy, knowledge, and talents, working on project and events that contribute to the quality of life in Clark County and has dedicated himself to public service to not only the Asian Community but to all citizens; and "NOW, THEREFORE, WE, the Board of County Communioners, on this occasion, December 5, 1999, in celebration and recognition of his special accomplishments, do hereby recognize and honor DR. Dr. Whiston and Judge Denton Invited Fellows and Chairpersons by WBTI By Tiffany ChangOn December 16, 1999, Dr. Susan C. Whiston was invited Fellow of Culture Institution and Chairperson of Career Counseling Study Committee by Washington Business and technology Instiitute (WBTI). "It's our honor to make the invitation because of her outstanding expertise and integrity both in Career Counseling and educational psychology," said Dr. Tony Lei, President of WBTI. "We are expecting that she will advance her accomplishment to provide further leadership in planning, developing, evaluating, and refining learning environments in a variety of settings to include schools, business, government agencies, and hospitals." Dr. Whiston is now Professor and Chairperson of Educational Psychology at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. Since December 19, 1999, Judge Mark R. Denton has been invited Fellow of Financial Management Institution and Chairman of Civil Law Study Committee by WBTI. Judge Denton is now District Judge of Eighth Judicial District Court of Nevada. Mark was born in 1951 at Elko, Nevada. He graduatedfrom University of Nevada, Reno with distingction in spring of 1973 (Junior year in paris, France, through an affiliate of UNR, the Institute of European Studies; courses taken in French at The Institute's facility and at the Institut d' Studes Politiques, a faculty of the Universite de Paris.) He received Juris Doctor (J.D.) in May of 1976 from Georgetown University Law Center, Washington, D. C. Until assuming district court bench, Mark was with the firm of Denton & Denton, Ltd. since admission to the bar in 1976. He has been engaged in the general practice of law with emphasis on the civil areas of business, commercial, corporate, real estate, probatee, local government, banking and personal injury law, including litigation in such fields. Firm has expertise in the areas of water and mining law as well, and has handled both state and federal criminal law matters also. "It has been a good gratifying to invite a gentleman of Judge Denton's both expertise and integrity with international perspective to this Institute," said WBTI President Dr. Lei. The President was very pleased to make the appointment because he thought that throughout Judge Denton's distinguished career the Judge has been earned a reputation as a conscientious and dedicated professional. Ms. Lisa Surber, a Branch Manager of the First Republic Bank, has been appointed by Dr. Lei as an Associate Fellow of Financial Management Institution of WBTI on November 3, 1999. She has recently trained and helped one of her subordinate, Torben Cohrs, become a branch manager in New York. She has managed the Branch of First Republic Bank on West Charleston of Las Vegas with creative effort for a substantial period of time. With good personal traits and capable work performance, a lady of Lisa is surely to be encouraged by Dr. Lei to attain the art of a successful management--to achieve the peak both good of production and human relations in balance. | |

Community Service Brings with Peace and Love By Tifanny Chang Dr. Tony T. Lei, President of Washington Business Technology Institute, earned M.B.A. and Ed.D. in Institutional Management from Pepperdine University. During the past five years, besides his professional work, Dr. Lei has contributed significant achievement for cultural exchanges and community services. He has been twice consecutively elected the Director of South Shores Community Association with concrete contribution to the benefits of the residents and homeowners of the community. He has achieved of good work performance for this community on: (1)Safety, traffic signals, transportation, sanitation, mail service, disposal services, and environment protection. (2)Good property management and landscape maintenance. (3)Motivation of good work performance between our Association and the Management Company. As a result of the dedicated efforts of the Directors of Board working to improve the benefits of the community and the property value of homeowners, this Association was recently honored as the Association of the Year by CAI. Dr. Tony Lei has been appointed Member of Senior Citizens' Advisory Board in the May 4, 1997. With his sincere and diligent work for the Board, he has been respected as an effective and loyal Advisor and has been elected Secretary of the Board since February 12, 1998. Dr. Lei is developing good ideas to put effort and wisdom for improving the quality of life of our Las Vegas Seniors. On September 17, 1998, City of Las Vegas and Thai Cultural Arts Association of Las Vegas presented the Thai Performance Arts__Appreciation Day 1998. In the event, Dr. Tony Lei received an Award for being a Supporter of the Thai and Asian Cultures with 11 other honorees: Dr. Raj Chanderraj, Mr. James Chen, Ms. Dolly de Leon, Mr Steven Kwon, Benson Lee, Esq., Mr. Charlie Lee, Dr. R. D. Prabhu, Dr. J.A. Villaflor, Mr. Buck Wong, Dr. Roddy Wong, and Mr. Tonie Sison. The highlight of this event was certificates of award presented by U.S. Senator Harry Reid to the Thai Cultural Arts Association of LasVegas and Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI). On behalf of WBTI, Dr. Lei received the Award through Dr. Roger Owen. The Award honored WBTI's contribution to cultural and social services for the community of Nevada. On June 21, 1998, Dr. Lei received the All American Humor Award. He was one of the distinguished award honorees because of his outstanding ability to characterize pride, dignity, and respect for fatherhood. He was honored also because of his achievement in successful academic endeavor. He is proficient in teaching and research with an excellent aptitude in organization skills and leadership. He points out that technology is one of the most important revolution to hit education, and education is key to economic development. As a person on the list of Honorary Alumni of Pepperdine University, and on this coming of the information era, Dr. Lei affirms that knowledge calls, ultimately, for a life of service.
