Season's Greetings from Chancellor Dr. Charles Runnels and Mrs. Dr. Norvel Young of Pepperdine University (Modified Edition.)
By Tiffany Chang

The mails for us to pick up used to be late on Monday, and thus we received the mails at about 5:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon. The following two mails are the most important ones of them:

1. Season's Greetings from Chancellor Dr. Charles Runnels
To: Dr. Tony Tung-tien Lei
President
Washington Business and Technology Institute

This card has been designed creatively! On the cover, it is the Heroes Garden. The Garden was opened to the public on September 11, 2003. It is a quite place of reflection dedicated to the heroes of 9-11 and all those who live heroic lives. The photo was taken by Ron Hall with special treatment by Keith Lungwitz.

The inside photo is of the Runnels family. The Runnels family gathered at the stunning new Drescher Graduate Campus at Malibu, which opened in fall 2003. Pictured left to right are Chase, Susan, Duke, Ginger, Jessica, Megan, Alexander, Christopher, Caitlin, Jasmine, and Tyler. Amy Jo and Charles are seated in front. *1 The photo was taken by Alex Washington. (*It is shown on the next flier.)

Great is the Message inside:
There is a garden that brings to mind
faces of Americans, courageous souls.

It can remind us, too, of a heroic season:
as the old, with both victories and hardships,
bows to the new, with resolves to reach
high, wider, deeper.

And it can remind us of the coming of
The Great Hero, from heaven to earth,
to show us the most beautiful face
of courage, forgiveness, and love.

May this be your best year ever.

Charles (Signature.)

2. Christmas Card from Mrs. Dr. Norvel Young
To: Dr. Tony Tung-tien Lei
President
Washington Business and Technology Institute

The cover is the photo of a colorful building. Mrs. Young stated the following for the cover: "I'm delighted to share the news of a University fund-raising effort to name the new building on the Drescher Graduate Campus that houses the Graduate School of Education and Psychology and the Center for the Family: The M. Norvel and Helen M. Young Center. Norvel would be so pleased!" *2 Dr. M. Norvel Young was Former President of Pepperdine University. His love and concern extended to the Asian Students in Pepperdine University have always been remembered. He was very pleased to be invited by Dr. Tony Lei and other alumni to a famous Japenese Restaurant for the grand "Teit Barn Sou"(in Chinese) in Taipei many years ago when Dr. Tony Lei taught Information Management at the Graduate School of Business Administration of National Chunghsing University.

Inside the first page presents the words of The Holy Bible: Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to men on whom his favour rests. --- Luke 2:14.

Inside the second page are good words from Mrs. Helen M. Young:
Just when we think
our blessings are full,
God enters
and blesses us with new beauties,
new friends, and new horizons.
He is forever the God of hope,
joy, and peace.

Have a blessed season!

"Let me thank you very much for the beautiful way you arranged our Christmas card on your web page. It is amazing how much can be done on a computer. You must be a whiz to do all of these fancy things! Congratulations," wrote Dr. Charles Runnels, Chancellor of Pepperdine University, from his Office to Dr. Tony Lei. The credit should also go to the advice and encouragement of Dr. Runnels for WBTI to receive the Outstanding Accomplishment Award for the Pan Pacific and Asian Amrican Forum (PPAAF) from the U. S. Congress by Congresswoman Shelley Berkley.

"Thanks for remembering us in such a nice way. Please visit us on our beautiful Malibu campus whenever you have an opportunity. Incidentally, General Norman Schwartzkopf will be speaking at the Pepperdine Associates Banquet this year on April 9. I hope you can plan to attend that wonderful event," Chancellor Dr. Charles Runnels*3 continued and cordially invited Dr. Tony Tung-tien Lei, President of WBTI.

A Heritage of faith for Pepperdine University
By Tiffany Chang

The Fall 2003 Issue of "Pepperdine People" is great! "This brings to my mind the urgency of our times. We note the vanishing of a heroic generation that rebuilt the world after World War II. But the best way to honor those who have gone before us is to rise up and find the greatness in our own lives, the strength of character, the courage, the determination, the selflessness to adress the challenges that still lay before us. It is most appropriate to consider these thoughts within the context of our yearly theme, 'A Heritage of faith,'" pointed out Dr. Andrew Benton, President of Pepperdine University, at the first page of the beautiful magazine with elegant standard of publication.*1 The magazine is published to inform donors and friends of the development and accomplishments of Pepperdine University and its people. A copy was sent to Dr. Tony Tung-tien Lei, President of Washington Business and Technology Institute from Pepperdine University.

"Young men and women of vision, tenacity, and generosity are already taking their places in the work of continuing the legacy of those vanishing giants. But more heroes are needed in order to advance our mission into the future," continued the President*2

"The question is: How can we leave the world in a better condition than we found it ? There may be many answers to that, but only a few make much sense. Near the top of such answers is this: Build a teaching institution that is grounded in timeless truths, that makes it its business to offer solutions to the puzzles that young people ponder. Or, as our mission statement expresses it, 'Pepperdine is a Christian university committed to the hightest standards of academic excellence and Christian values, where students are strenghtened for lives of purpose, service, and leadership.' that is a mission worth investing a life in," concluded Dr. Benton.*3

At the beginging of this Message, Dr. Andrew Benton stated that, "We have completed an academic year that included notable successes." He is the seventh President of Pepperdine University. He is making the most impressive music of his life. He is a different kind of leader who harmonizes and improvises and leads a variety of wonderful "instruments" in an intricate and soaring symphony...whihc is Pepperdine University.*4 In the meantime, Dr. Tony Lei received a nice Christmas card from Dr. Andy Benton and his wife Debby stating that, "May the warmth of this special season fill your heart with joy and hope. We wish you and all those whom you love the very best in this holiday season and the coming year." *5
