NORM: Wynn extended service to Leigh

Janet Leigh's most famous scene, for the movie "Psycho," was so terrifying it put her off showers for the rest of her life. (Check the newspaper please.)

Actress and animal lover Janet Leigh never forgot Steve Wynn for treating her dog like a VIP.

Back in the 1980s, Leigh arrived in Las Vegas by car with her dog and couldn't find a hotel or motel that allowed mutts.

After an exhausting search, Leigh remembered Wynn owned the Golden Nugget.

He not only dropped the no-pets policy, but sent a "doggy burger" to the room.

Early the next morning, Leigh had heads turning when she walked through the casino to take her pooch for a walk.

"They looked like they were seeing an apparition," Leigh told freelance writer Darlene Arden.

Leigh was married to actor Tony Curtis, now a Las Vegas resident, from 1951 to 1962. They co-starred in five films, including "Houdini" in 1953, but she is best remembered for the shower-slashing scene in the 1960 thriller "Psycho."

Leigh died Sunday at her Beverly Hills, Calif., home. She was 77.

JANE ANN MORRISON: Boggs McDonald: Public records don't tell true story of family finances

Public records say Lynette Boggs McDonald and her husband, Steven McDonald, stopped paying their mortgage beginning in November 2002 and faced two notices in 2003 that the breaches could result in foreclosure on their former Summerlin home.

Public records also say Steven McDonald failed to pay an $8,800 credit card debt.

And public records say his wife paid him $6,900 from her campaign account after Citibank sued him in District Court in April 2003.

Public records suggest this is a couple with financial woes.

Boggs McDonald insisted Friday that public records don't tell the full story.

The county commissioner admitted they might have paid their mortgage late, but there was no way they missed 10 months of mortgage payments as two breach notices at the Clark County recorder's office suggest.

She said there was a glitch when their mortgage loan was sold and they wrote checks to the wrong loan company. Boggs McDonald said the problem was resolved before they sold the home in August 2003. "I know for a fact I never defaulted, and there were never any liens placed on the home or any foreclosures."

Yes, her husband, who handles their family finances, was sued for failing to pay his Citibank debt, but she said he paid it in May 2003.

The $6,900 she paid him from her campaign account was a sum they agreed to pay him, calculated at $300 a month, for prior campaign-related expenses, the former Ward 2 Las Vegas city councilwoman said.

She said she paid him then because the money was available from her March 2003 fund-raiser. (It's not unusual to see a relative paid with campaign dollars, although personal use of campaign dollars is illegal.)

The McDonalds were unable to produce their own records proving they paid the mortgage during the 10 months in question. Nor could they show proof he paid his credit card debt. Even though the records are less than 2 years old, they can't locate them. A search of a storage locker was fruitless.

She asked their credit union to provide their checking account records, but that takes time.

The Republican county commissioner is in the midst of a heated battle with Democratic Assemblyman David Goldwater, and debts are a character issue for some voters.

If she can't manage her money, can she be trusted to manage yours?

Boggs McDonald, 41, was appointed to the Las Vegas City Council in 1999. The next year, the McDonalds, with the help of an inheritance, moved from their modest $135,000 home to a lavish $505,000 home on Sable Mist Court in Summerlin.

By the time she ran for Congress in 2002, federal finance reports showed the McDonalds had a combined annual income of about $163,000 with a credit card debt of about $20,000, primarily her husband's debt.

In February 2003, a breach notice was filed advising the couple that they hadn't paid their mortgage on the Summerlin home since Nov. 1, 2002 (just days before she lost her congressional race), and if they didn't pay up, their home would go into foreclosure.

A second breach notice was filed in August 2003.

Later that month, the McDonalds sold the Summerlin home for $600,500, and in September 2003, the default notice was rescinded.

"The reason for selling the house was not because of financial difficulties; we made a lifestyle decision," she said.

In 2003, she had medical problems, and after tumors were removed, decided to have a second child through in vitro fertilization, which is not covered by insurance. She decided against working, other than as a commissioner.

Today, they live on her $54,000 a year commissioner's salary and her husband's $52,000 a year salary as a law clerk in Family Court. (He was unemployed for nine months after Treasurer Brian Krolicki forced him to resign from his $78,000 a year job as deputy state treasurer. The reasons for the mandatory departure have not become public.)

Currently, the McDonalds own no property but rent a $162,000 home.

When she gets the checks from her credit union, she assured me she can verify the public records were misleading. "The paperwork will hopefully get this all straightened out," she said.

Goldwater doubtlessly hopes it won't get straightened out, at least not before Nov. 2.

Dear Club member;

Our next meeting will be in conjunction with our $5 Dinner with Congresswoman Shelley Berkley and Congressional District 3 Candidate Tom Gallagher Wednesday, September 20, 2004* at 6:30 PM, at our new meeting place, the Teamsters Local #14 building, 1250 Burnham Street. See map below. Please invite your friends.
(*Soon after receiving this e-mail in the morning of Friday, October 1, 2004, Dr. Tony Lei called John to correct the date from September 20 to October 20. And John corrected it soon afterward with thanks.)

We are getting closer and closer to the Presidential election and we must do all we can to bring the Kerry/ Edwards campaign to victory. The most important thing we can do is to get Democrats registered and then to the polls to vote.

The State of Nevada with its 5 electoral votes doesn’t sound very important but we are. In 2000 we only had 4 electoral votes but if we could have carried the State for Gore he would be President of the United States right now. I have a personal stake in this election as I have the honor of being one of the 5 members of the Electoral College for the Democratic Party and will go to Carson City to cast a vote when Kerry wins.

Besides the Presidential race we must also work hard to elect our other Democrats to Congress, the State Senate , Assembly, County Commission and other non Partisan races where there are Democrats against Republicans. To do volunteer work call Democratic headquarters 737-8683 or stop by their new headquarters at 1325 E. Vegas Valley Dr. ( East of Maryland Pkwy).

It is imperative that we keep the County Commission Democratic. We must support Tom Collins and David Goldwater in their races, to help Tom call 645-2617, David 796-5644.

The Woman’s Democratic Club is having a 50th Golden Anniversary Gala Dinner on Saturday October 9th at Mandalay Bay. Tickets are $125, for more information call 615-4522.

I look forward to seeing you at the dinner on the 20th .

John Ponticello

First lady campaigns for husband
Laura Bush encourages women to get out Republican vote
By ERIN NEFF
REVIEW-JOURNAL

First lady Laura Bush signs autographs and meets with supporters following her 20-minute speech at the Henderson Pavilion on Tuesday. (Check it with the newspaper please.)

First lady Laura Bush rallied supporters Tuesday when her pep talk about women's issues turned into a political endorsement for her husband's re-election as he preps for his first debate with John Kerry.

"This Thursday night in Miami, the American people will see the strong, decisive man I've known for the last 27 years," she said to applause. "He's a man who says what he means and does what he says."

She took the stage in a fuchsia blazer, tailored black pants and slingback heels and smiled often to the estimated crowd of 2,000 at the Henderson Pavilion in Green Valley.

On this, her third visit to Southern Nevada this year, Bush encouraged the largely female crowd to talk to their neighbors about the election in the five weeks until Election Day.

Thanks for inviting me to the karaoke party next Sunday. I have another party at the St. Rose Dominican hospital that evening but for sure I'll meet you at your karaoke party. Henry has just sent me the pictures that he took at the Harbor Palace Restaurant and at the tradeshow.

I had a great time in Hawaii. Can you believe that everybody who sees me here thought that I'm Hawaiian because of the dark tan. Hope things are great for you. I'll see you next Sunday.

Take care.

NEWSMAKERS: Las Vegan captures first place in regional chef competition
Stephen Gillanders, a junior at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, has been cooking since he was 15
By MONIQUE FRIGARD
REVIEW-JOURNAL

Stephen Gillanders served up salmon and walked away with the win at the third annual San Pelligrino Almost Famous Chef Competition Sept. 19 at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Gillanders, 21, competed against six other aspiring chefs to grab the regional win. He will compete in the Almost Famous Chef national competition Oct. 14-17 at Mandalay Bay.

Gillanders, a junior in culinary arts management at UNLV, prepared a crispy skin-cured salmon with Parmesan spinach cakes, Yukon gold potato puree, mushroom ragout, smoked salmon rillette and port wine beurre rouge sauce, that won over a panel of judges.

In the national competition, regional winners will compete a la "Iron Chef" style, in which a mystery ingredient is presented and contestants have two hours to prepare a dish. Other categories will include a signature dish contest and a people's choice contest.

But for the San Pelligrino competition, the students had ample time to prepare their menus.

"I had about two months in recipe development," Gillanders said. "But once I was there I had about three hours in prep, two hours (to cook) and 15 minutes for plate (presentation)."

Gillanders actually started learning about the kitchen at 15, when he entered the Culinary Arts Institute, where he took afternoon cooking classes in an accelerated program after a full day of school at Bishop Alemany High School in Granada Hills, Calif.

"I told my friends I was in skating camp, because it doesn't sound that cool to say you are in cooking class at 15," he said, laughing.

After receiving his certificate at 15 in 1998, he graduated from high school in 2001 and went on to attend Mission College in Los Angeles where he received his associate's degree in culinary arts in 2003.

When deciding on a transfer college, he took a look at Las Vegas and noticed that many influential chefs are working in Southern Nevada. At that point, he chose UNLV.

"It made sense to come here, with all the great chefs in town," he said.

Besides competitions and regular classes, Gillanders also works as one of three instructors at Creative Cooking School.

"After I graduate, I plan on going to culinary school in Paris," Gillanders said. "Maybe spending some time on the East Coast and eventually settling down in Los Angeles."

TRIP OF THE WEEK: There is plenty of fall foliage to see throughout Nevada

Nevadans enjoy an extended fall color season starting about now in the high mountains and ending when the last leaves fall in the lower desert in December. If you want to see high-country color, plan fall foliage outings soon, for the best of the mountain color disappears by mid-October.

Wherever the high-forested mountains have stands of quaking aspen, the autumn color will be good. Few other trees in Nevada put on as fancy dress for fall as these stately, white-trunked natives. Their leaves take on yellow hues ranging from palest butter to bright persimmon. Autumn breezes scatter the falling leaves like gold pieces carelessly flung.

The Spring Mountains west of Las Vegas provide plenty of color during their brief autumn, all less than an hour's drive from town. Stands of aspen in Kyle, Deer Creek and Lee canyons bear swaths of color. Look for the first color among the snow-stunted groves on high rocky slopes. The show ends with the trees protected in the canyons. Drive up into Kyle and Lee canyons to the ends of the highways for the best views. Hikers following trails in the Spring Mountains reap scenic rewards.

Other vegetation provides mountain color as well. The kinds of oaks and maples native to Nevada do not take on the brilliant hues of their relations in other parts of the country. They change to more subtle tones of amber and russet. Throughout much of Nevada, the native rabbit brush grows unobtrusively all year. In autumn, it clothes itself in ochre blossoms, creating glorious roadside color.

Head north into White Pine and Elko counties for other notable samples of high-mountain color in Nevada. Folks around Ely boast of brilliant displays along the Success Summit Loop and at Great Basin National Park. Residents of Elko say you can't match the color in Lamoille Canyon and elsewhere in the Ruby Mountains.

One of the most scenic drives in the Silver State, the Success Summit Loop begins north of Ely off U.S. 93. It follows a beautiful valley at the foot of the Schell Creek Range to a high summit, then drops down to cave Lake State Park and returns to U.S. 93. If you get there at the right time, every canyon blazes with color. The excursion, popular with locals, takes just a couple of hours.

Great Basin National Park lies about 190 miles from Las Vegas by way of U.S. 93, U.S. 6 and a short spur through the town of Baker. Take the 12-mile Wheeler Peak Scenic Road for the best of colorful foliage, dramatic mountains and panoramic overviews. Several foot trails accessed from the road provide wider access to fall color views. Inquire at the park office for the best hikes and places to see fall color.

Often called "Nevada's Alps," the high, jagged Ruby Mountains shelter some of the most spectacular scenery in the state. Predicting the duration of the fall color season there is chancy, for the heavy snows of winter are never long off. To reach the area, Southern Nevadans drive the length of the state, 430 miles to Elko and 32 miles more through old Lamoille Canyon.

A well-kept scenic secret, remote Fish Lake Valley near Boundary Peak in western Esmeralda County offers gorgeous fall color. Vegetation filling canyons in the White Mountains briefly overflows into the valley with seasonal brilliance.

Cousins of the aspen growing at lower elevations, cottonwoods and poplars turn various shades of yellow and orange, extending autumnal displays. Ash and willows frequently grow in the same areas. They brighten canyons, lake shores and water courses later in the fall across the state.

Long after the aspens lose their leaves and snow dusts the high peaks, the cottonwoods and their neighbors defy oncoming winter with bright raiment. Look for the groves of cottonwoods around the Pahranagat Lakes near Alamo on U.S. 93 to glow brightly against brilliant autumn skies. Still lake waters reflecting their images double the beauty. Follow the Meadow Valley Wash south from Caliente through Rainbow Canyon toward Elgin for late season brilliance. Autumn color breaks up the long trip to Reno on U.S. 95 along the Amargosa River near Beatty, the Walker River near Schurz and in the canyons and valleys along the Truckee River. There is still plenty of gold in Nevada, if you know where to look.

Margo Bartlett Pesek's Trip of the Week column appears Sundays.

Dearest Tony & Judy,

Thanks for inviting me to the karaoke party next Sunday. I have another party at the St. Rose Dominican hospital that evening but for sure I'll meet you at your karaoke party. Henry has just sent me the pictures that he took at the Harbor Palace Restaurant and at the tradeshow.

I had a great time in Hawaii. Can you believe that everybody who sees me here thought that I'm Hawaiian because of the dark tan. Hope things are great for you. I'll see you next Sunday.

Take care.

Jennilee :-)
