The powerful drive to acquire knowledge!
A wise man is always open to and looks for new ideas
By Jennifer Kung

The desire to persuit knowledge is for everybody. A wise man is always open to and looks for new ideas. One of the most precious human resource is the desire to improve. People can learn much by doing.

We are pleased to quote the following five short but meaningful ones:

***** It may be all right to be content with what you have; never with what you are. ---B. C. Forbes
***** "I cannot teach anybody anything, I can only make them think." ---Socrates
***** It's not where you are today that counts. It's where you are headed. ---Arthur F. Lenehan
***** Dicovery consists of looking at the same thing as everyone else and thinking something different. ---Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
***** The man who does not read books has no advantage over the man who can't read them. ---Mark Twain

It's our pleasure to post a short story and quotation from "Speaker's Source Book" by Glenn Van Ekeren. *1

A young, devoted follower of Socrates pleaded with him to share the secret of acquired knowledge. Socrates willingly consented and led the young man to a river. "This is how," Socrates stated as he pushed the young man into the river, and then jumping in himself, he held the young man's head underwater. The young man struggled frantically to free himself, but Socrates held him tight and kept his head submerged.
Finally, after the young man scratched, clawed, and fought with every ounce of his being, he was able to break loose and emerge from the water. Socrates then asked him, "When you thought you were drowning, what one thing did you want most of all?"
Still grasping for breath, the young man exclaimed, "I wanted air!" Socrates smiled and then wisely commented, "When you want knowledge as much as you wanted air, then you will get it!" *2

Usually, change and growth will come at the time when we take a conscious step forward out of the anxiety and into activity. We are not a being to stand still. We are a being in the process of becoming. The more we enable us to become, the more we fulfill our true missions.

Prof. Chi-kwan Chen passed away
Many Tunghai University alumnus are morning for him!
By Jennifer Kung

***** "No great artist ever sees things as they really are. If he did, he would cease to be an artist." --- Oscar Wilde
***** "Freedom is the oxygen of the soul." --- Moshe Dayan
***** "What would life be if we had no courage to attemp anything." --- Vincent Van Gogh

Professor Chi-kwan Chen passed away peacefully on June 5, 2007. The following are some parts of introduction about him on Google.com. Any modification on them or richness about his achievements that our readers and his family may extend to WBTI will highly be appreciated:

[[[ Chen Chi-kwan fused tradition and modernism to change the face of Chinese painting.

At National Central University's commencement ceremony last year, a raft of fresh-faced young scholars took their first steps into the world, but all eyes were fixed on an unconventional graduate. With cane in hand and a childlike grin, 83-year-old architect and artist Chen Chi-kwan was conferred an honorary doctorate from his transposed alma mater.

Unable to afford the Harvard tuition, Chen was thrilled when Gropius invited him to work at his firm. Chen seized the golden opportunity and set out to prove to Gropius that he made the right decision. A year later, with Gropius' recommendation, Chen began teaching architectural design at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

In 1954, Chen received an invitation from I.M. Pei in New York to participate in the campus design project for the newly founded Tunghai University in central Taiwan. Chen accepted the invitation on one condition, that his name be recorded together with Pei's. The idea of the project was to create a recognizably Chinese campus. It was this project that brought Chen to Taiwan for the first time and made him known for the successful incorporation of Chinese elements into modern architecture.

The Luce Chapel, built in memory of Henry W. Luce, founding publisher of Time and Life magazines, was central to the whole project. Although the design came to the public eye in the 1957 March issue of Architectural Forum, the chapel remained on paper until 1960 when funding finally came through. Chen accepted the university's invitation to establish an architectural department while overseeing the construction of the chapel. In November 1963, construction was completed on the elegant chapel that seemed to rise above the ground like two pairs of praying hands.

Chen was dean of the university's architectural department for four years before he started his own firm in 1964. ]]] *1

藝術大師陳其寬病逝
{藍景嚴}

陳其寬追思會於9日上午11時在Chapel of the Highlands舉行,地址:194 Millwood Drive, San Mateo。*5

As we state in the letter head of this article that, "It's our pleasure to pay a tribute to the above officials who dedicate to the civic and community service aspects of our organization (WBTI) in an honorary or adjunct capacity." For Nevada, we need bright vision and enthusiasm with love and integrity. Our mutual cooperation and development between the officials and people will bring us a peaceful, happy, and healthy community. Thanks to the high-ranking officials who are in honor as co-authors of this presentation.*5

How brilliant! The articles such as "...to honor Attorney General Catherine Cortez ...", "Restoring America's Competitive Advantage By Harry M. "The willingness to create a new vision is a statement of your belief in your potential," pointed out David McNally. Carl Schutz told us that, "Ideals are like stars. You will not succeed in touching them with your hands. But like the seafaring man on the desert of waters, you choose them as your guides and following them you will reach your destiny." It is our pleasure to inspire the significance of the idea, "The world of tomorrow belongs to the person who has the vision today," which was stated by Robert Schuller. Having good vision, we will bring it together with us to help promote a peaceful, happy, and healthy community.

"Vision seems to be an elusive yet import life principle. Your vision describes the ideal future for you to attain. It provides meaning and direction while forcing you to break through present limitations. Holding a clear picture in your mind of the desired future will mobilize your creative efforts and generate the desire and energy to perform," edited Glenn Ekeren in his book entitled "Speaker's Source Book II".

Vision may develop its power to direct what tommorrow will look like. Vision is having an acute sense of the possible. The thing what others can not see, it can be seen by vision. Something extraordinary will occur when those with similar visions are drawn together. The goal of John F. Kennedy set in 1060 to place a man on the moon by 1970 drew many million people's efforts in achieving the dream. John had the vision. The result is now history with reality.

"I've joined the faculty of Public Administration Institution to work with its intellectuals such as Shelley Berkley, Dina Titus, Nancy Becker, Frankie Sue Del Papa, Dr. Roy Adamson, Mark Denton, Nancy Saitta, Valoerie Vega, Jennifer Togliatti, Michelle Leavitt, among others under the leadership of U. S. Senator Harry Reid and Nevada Governor Kenny Guinn with Dr. William Thompson as its Director and Fellow. It's one of our added assets that we have the excellent caliber of President Dr. Tony T. Lei of WBTI as our Senior Advisor of our Office of Assistant District Attorney. Obviously, we're winning prestige for our efficient work performance for our residents and visitors of Southern Nevada together with WBTI and its PAI's modern knowledge, rigtheous wisdom, and professional integrity," said Steward Bell, District Attorney, for the event and dinner party chaired by Dr. Tony Lei, Dr. R. D. Prabhu, David Amesbuy, Esq., and among others. It was held by the Asian American Community on June 18, 2002 at the Harbor Palace Restaurant in Las Vegas.*6

On September 23, 2002, District Attorney Stewart Bell wrote in his Office to President Dr. Tony Tung-tien Lei that "Dear Dr. Lei, I am honor and prviledged to accept your appointment as Honorary Chairman of the Clark County Distrct Attorney and Police Civil Commission (CCDAPCC) of the Washington Business and Technology Institute. I look forward to meeting on October 7th." In a second letter he wrote on the same day was that, "Dear Dr. Lei, I am honor and prviledged to accept your appointment as Senior Advisor of the Clark County Distrct Attorney and Police Civil Commission (CCDAPCC) of the Washington Business and Technology Institute. I look forward to meeting on October 7th." The two original letters were shown in the section of "Photos & Pictures". An elegant dinner party was held by WBTI to celebrate the appointments at the Steak House of Binion Horseshoe Club on October 7, 2002 in Las Vegas, Nevada.*7

Enthusiasm is important, especially very important to many things in our lives. We need to push our valuable vision through enthusiasm. We are pleased to quote the following three short but meaningful ones:

***** There is nothing greater than enthusiasm. ---Henry Moore
***** If you don't have enthusiasm, you don't have anything. ---Kemmons Wilson, Sr.
***** Nothing good or great can be done in the absence of enthusiasm. ---Tom Peters

We are quite inspired by the words of wisdom as said by Alan Loy McGinnis that, "There is no more noble occupation in the world than to assist another human being--to help someone succeed." Vision with enthusiasm may bring us with hope to serve our people, community, and country!

We may like to agree with what Dr. Thomas Dooley said that, "Dedicate some of your life to others. Your dedication will not be a sacrifice. It will be an exhilarating experience because it is intense effort applied toward a meaningful end."

"Dear Dr. Lei, I have read the wonderful article below and have learned so much about what is going on in our local community as well as world wide. There are so many important people who do good things for the community, and they should be commended for all of their efforts. I am highly impressed that you have so many friends and colleagues who communicate with you about their projects and activities for the betterment of society, including our Asian community. Best wishes," pointed out Cheryl Moss, District Court Judge of Nevada.

Entitled with "Michael Douglas: Igniting the city through the cooperation and development with our expertise, integrity, and professionalism is on the way!", the artitle was written by Valerie Weber, Cheryl Moss, Ingrid Ou, and Jennifer Kung.

"It's my great honor to be named by President Dr. Tony Lei as a Fellow of the Public Administration Institution (PAI) and an Honorary Chairman of the Clark County District and Police Civil Commission (CCDAPCC) of Washington Business and Technolgy Institute (WBTI)," pointed out the Chief Justice of Nevada Supreme Court William Maupin at the Celebration Party to "Nevada Examiner" and "Communitylink of Reviewjournal.com" at the Steak House of Binion's Horseshoe Club, Las Vegas, Nevada on October 10, 2002. The Party was held by WBTI to celebrate William Maupin's being appointed as its Fellow of the Public Administration Institution (PAI) and as its Honorary Chairman of the Clark County District Attorney and Police Civil Commission (CCDAPCC). "Please know that I irrevocably stand by my personal commitment to diversity issues in this state and that my sense of patriotism and faith in America stems from its embrace of that diversity." *8

"Our next meeting will be combined with our $5 Spaghetti Dinner 'Special Tribute to Justice Bob Rose' on Wednesday, May 16 at the Italian American Club at 2333 E. Sahara Ave. No host (cash) cocktails at 6 PM at the Italian American Club bar with dinner at 6:30 PM. Please invite your Democratic friends, Judges, lawyers, candidates and office holders you know to attend. Bob has recently retired from the Nevada Supreme Court. He is a former Lt Gov District Court Judge, Democratic Party State Party Chair and long time Paradise Club member," announced John Ponticello, President of Paradise Democratic Club of Las Vegas (PDCLV), on May 1, 2007 in Las Vegas, Nevada.*7

"Articles of WBTI's website (at http://communitylink.reviewjournal.com/lvrj/wbti) for community service through the publication by the leading search engines have been achieved for many years. To serve our community with the spirit of love is an inspiration. Their vision and enthusiasm are significant!" said Michael Douglas, Justice of Nevada Supreme Court.*14

Wish the wisdom and effort of WBTI and PDCLV a great success!

Having good vision, we will bring it together with us to help promote a peaceful, happy, and healthy community.*1

"Vision seems to be an elusive yet import life principle. Your vision describes the ideal future for you to attain. It provides meaning and direction while forcing you to break through present limitations. Holding a clear picture in your mind of the desired future will mobilize your creative efforts and generate the desire and energy to perform," edited Glenn Ekeren in his book.*2

We are quite inspired by the words of wisdom as said by Alan Loy McGinnis that, "There is no more noble occupation in the world than to assist another human being--to help someone succeed." Vision with enthusiasm may bring us with hope to serve our people, community, and country!*6

SHELLEY PARTICIPATES IN THE MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. PARADE

Shelley once again participated in the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade in downtown Las Vegas, NV. Shelley made her way down the parade route waving to the thousands of Nevadans who lined the streets to celebrate the life and accomplishments of Dr. King. This was the 26th year that the Martin Luther King Jr. Committee has sponsored the parade.*1

SHELLEY SPEAKS TO THE emergeNEVADA 2007 CLASS

Shelley was the guest speaker for the class of candidates for emergeNevada, a political leadership training program for Democratic women in Nevada. Shelley shared her experiences with the women from her days as a member of the Nevada State Assembly, to a University Regent, and currently as a member of the United States House of Representative. ALWAYS WORKING FOR YOU

BERKLEY VOTES YES ON RESOLUTION OPPOSING "SURGE" IN IRAQ

Congresswoman Shelley Berkley (D-NV) voted in favor of a Democratic resolution that praises the efforts of American troops fighting in Iraq, but also condemned the President's plan for a so-called "surge" in Iraq. The non-binding resolution passed the U.S. House of Representatives on a vote of 246-182.

"This resolution says thank you to our troops, but it also clearly says no to a surge in Iraq. The President wants to send 20,000 more U.S. troops into a civil war with an open-ended mission and a bulls-eye on their back and I do not support his policy. President Bush has yet to put forth a strategy that outlines where we're going, how we're going to get there, how long it's going to take, how much it's going to cost and at what sacrifice to the American people," Berkley said. "The bottom line remains that I will not give this President a blank check for a surge when he has yet to provide us a clear understanding of why such an increase is needed or how it will help us to succeed." *2

NEVADA EARLY CAUCUS UPDATE

In 2006 the Democratic National Committee chose the great state of Nevada to be one of the new early caucus states that will help choose the next Democratic nominee for President of the United States.

As a member of the Nevada Caucus Commission Shelley will be working hard to make sure that all the Democratic presidential candidates know the issues and concerns that are important to the voters in Nevada抯 1st Congressional District and also ensure that the Caucus is a success.

In an effort to keep you, the voter, up-to-date with the Caucus we will feature stories of presidential candidate visits and also have survey questions so we know what is on your mind.

Our first survey question is:

What issue would you like to see the presidential candidates address when visiting Nevada?

Send in your answers to shelley@sberkley.com and we will have the results in the next newsletter.

Dr. Peter C. C. Wang received Peace Builder Award from Pacific Lutheran University
王成钊博士荣获太平洋路德大学“和平建设奖”
By Jennifer Kung

"Hi Tony, I just realized that was your email address. How are you? Sending my original acceptance speech as attachment below. Warm regards, Peter," wrote Dr. Peter C. C. Wang, Founder, Chairman & President of Wang Foundation to President Dr. Tony T. Lei of Wahington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) in the evening on March 7, 2007 from Pebble Beach, California.*1

The following is the "Acceptance Speech" for the Peace Builder Award on February 23, 2007 at PLU (Pacific Lutheran University) by Peter C. C. Wang:

[[[ Loren and MaryAnn, Honorable Vice President Mondale, George and Dion Russell, distinguished guests and my fellow colleagues and students:

Grace and I are deeply honored with the Peace Builder Award.

Thank you, Loren, for the wonderful introduction and we gratefully accept this award as encouragement for our future work. Thank you.

The true meaning of poverty alleviation stems from the motto of Tsinghua University -- Self discipline and Social commitment.

"Self discipline" begins with an openness to new ideas, a willingness to learn. It requires curiosity to explore uncharted intellectual territory, capacity to understand and honor multiple viewpoints, and an interest in things new and unexpected. It requires the courage to accept new ways of thinking and the challenge to construct complex new understandings. One example would be the new discovery of a vast community of bacteria and clams on the Antarctic Ocean floor, in an area isolated under ice for ten thousand years. Another example would be the recent possible discovery of the 10th planet.

Self discipline means to take challenges and take risks. It can be uncomfortable but persists when I step beyond my comfort zone so that I might learn and grow, and go further than I ever thought I could. That is my understanding of "Self discipline" from the Tsinghua motto.

"Social commitment" can be illustrated by the following story, recently told by Loren in a convocation speech, about the Seattle Special Olympics. This lovely story illustrates the importance of commitment and connection:

For the 100-yard dash there were nine contestants. All nine of them assembled at the starting line. At the sound of the gun, they took off. But one little boy didn抰 get very far. He stumbled and fell and hurt his knee and began to cry. The other eight children heard the boy crying. They slowed down, turned around and ran back to him ?every one of them ran back to him. One little girl with Down抯 syndrome bent down and kissed the boy and said, "This will make it better." The little boy got up, and he and the rest of the runners linked their arms together and joyfully walked to the finish line.

They all finished the race at the same time. And when they did, everyone in the stadium stood and clapped and whistled and cheered for卆 very long time. People who were there are still telling the story with obvious delight. And you know why?

Because deep down we know that what matters in life more than winning for ourselves is what we achieve through our efforts in self discipline and social commitment. What really matters is helping others win too, even if it means slowing down and changing our course. From these 9 kids, we have learned the essence of social commitment which is the cornerstone of the poverty alleviation work at Tsinghua.

Thank you for coming to help us celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Wang Center. Special thanks go to Walter F. Mondale, Former Vice President of The United States, whose special luncheon speech has energized us all.*2 ]]]

An e-mail was sent by Dr. Peter C. C. Wang, Founder, Chairman & President of Wang Foundation to Wahington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) in the morning on March 7, 2007 from Pebble Beach, California.*3 The following is the good translation of his acceptance speech recently:
