By Tiffany Chang The mails for us to pick up used to be late on Monday, and thus we received the mails at about 5:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon. The following two mails are the most important ones of them: 1. Season's Greetings from Chancellor Dr. Charles Runnels To: Dr. Tony Tung-tien Lei President Washington Business and Technology Institute This card has been designed creatively! On the cover, it is the Heroes Garden. The Garden was opened to the public on September 11, 2003. It is a quite place of reflection dedicated to the heroes of 9-11 and all those who live heroic lives. The photo was taken by Ron Hall with special treatment by Keith Lungwitz. The inside photo is of the Runnels family. The Runnels family gathered at the stunning new Drescher Graduate Campus at Malibu, which opened in fall 2003. Pictured left to right are Chase, Susan, Duke, Ginger, Jessica, Megan, Alexander, Christopher, Caitlin, Jasmine, and Tyler. Amy Jo and Charles are seated in front. *1 The photo was taken by Alex Washington. (*It is shown on the next flier.) Great is the Message inside: There is a garden that brings to mind faces of Americans, courageous souls. It can remind us, too, of a heroic season: as the old, with both victories and hardships, bows to the new, with resolves to reach high, wider, deeper. And it can remind us of the coming of The Great Hero, from heaven to earth, to show us the most beautiful face of courage, forgiveness, and love. May this be your best year ever. Charles (Signature.) 2. Christmas Card from Mrs. Dr. Norvel Young To: Dr. Tony Tung-tien Lei President Washington Business and Technology Institute The cover is the photo of a colorful building. Mrs. Young stated the following for the cover: "I'm delighted to share the news of a University fund-raising effort to name the new building on the Drescher Graduate Campus that houses the Graduate School of Education and Psychology and the Center for the Family: The M. Norvel and Helen M. Young Center. Norvel would be so pleased!" *2 Dr. M. Norvel Young was Former President of Pepperdine University. His love and concern extended to the Asian Students in Pepperdine University have always been remembered. He was very pleased to be invited by Dr. Tony Lei and other alumni to a famous Japenese Restaurant for the grand "Teit Barn Sou"(in Chinese) in Taipei many years ago when Dr. Tony Lei taught Information Management at the Graduate School of Business Administration of National Chunghsing University. Inside the first page presents the words of The Holy Bible: Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to men on whom his favour rests. --- Luke 2:14. Inside the second page are good words from Mrs. Helen M. Young: Just when we think our blessings are full, God enters and blesses us with new beauties, new friends, and new horizons. He is forever the God of hope, joy, and peace. Have a blessed season! Helen (Signature.) Helen M. Young "Let me thank you very much for the beautiful way you arranged our Christmas card on your web page. It is amazing how much can be done on a computer. You must be a whiz to do all of these fancy things! Congratulations," wrote Dr. Charles Runnels, Chancellor of Pepperdine University, from his Office to Dr. Tony Lei. The credit should also go to the advice and encouragement of Dr. Runnels for WBTI to receive the Outstanding Accomplishment Award for the Pan Pacific and Asian Amrican Forum (PPAAF) from the U. S. Congress by Congresswoman Shelley Berkley. "Thanks for remembering us in such a nice way. Please visit us on our beautiful Malibu campus whenever you have an opportunity. Incidentally, General Norman Schwartzkopf will be speaking at the Pepperdine Associates Banquet this year on April 9. I hope you can plan to attend that wonderful event," Chancellor Dr. Charles Runnels*3 continued and cordially invited Dr. Tony Tung-tien Lei, President of WBTI. ---------------------------------------------------------------- References *1. "This brings to my mind the urgency of our times. We note the vanishing of a heroic generation that rebuilt the world after World War II. But the best way to honor those who have gone before us is to rise up and find the greatness in our own lives, the strength of character, the courage, the determination, the selflessness to adress the challenges that still lay before us. It is most appropriate to consider these thoughts within the context of our yearly theme, 'A Heritage of faith,'" pointed out Dr. Andrew Benton, President of Pepperdine University, at the first page of the beautiful magazine with elegant standard of publication.*1 The magazine is published to inform donors and friends of the development and accomplishments of Pepperdine University and its people. A copy was sent to Dr. Tony Tung-tien Lei, President of Washington Business and Technology Institute from Pepperdine University. "Young men and women of vision, tenacity, and generosity are already taking their places in the work of continuing the legacy of those vanishing giants. But more heroes are needed in order to advance our mission into the future," continued the President*2 "The question is: How can we leave the world in a better condition than we found it ? There may be many answers to that, but only a few make much sense. Near the top of such answers is this: Build a teaching institution that is grounded in timeless truths, that makes it its business to offer solutions to the puzzles that young people ponder. Or, as our mission statement expresses it, 'Pepperdine is a Christian university committed to the hightest standards of academic excellence and Christian values, where students are strenghtened for lives of purpose, service, and leadership.' that is a mission worth investing a life in," concluded Dr. Benton.*3 At the beginging of this Message, Dr. Andrew Benton stated that, "We have completed an academic year that included notable successes." He is the seventh President of Pepperdine University. He is making the most impressive music of his life. He is a different kind of leader who harmonizes and improvises and leads a variety of wonderful "instruments" in an intricate and soaring symphony...whihc is Pepperdine University.*4 In the meantime, Dr. Tony Lei received a nice Christmas card from Dr. Andy Benton and his wife Debby stating that, "May the warmth of this special season fill your heart with joy and hope. We wish you and all those whom you love the very best in this holiday season and the coming year." *5 ---------------------------------------------------------------- References *1. Benton, Andrew. "He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling him. My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God, and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another," said the Bible.*2 The following is another example of what we would like to do for related and concerned associations in publicity: ----------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Tony, Thank you very much for your support of the Singapore Association of Nevada (a non-profit organization) during our launch year of 2003. It is with your support and encouragement that SAN has become a highly respected organization within the State of Nevada and the Republic of Singapore. When I founded SAN in 2003 it was with my strong passion and belief in the Republic of Singapore and the opportunity it provides for Singaporeans and can also provide for Nevadans (including businesses based in Nevada). SAN was formed in 2003 with the intent of creating a support mechanism for Singaporeans living in the State of Nevada (USA), providing support for Nevadans seeking to do business in Singapore (Southeast Asia), and to create government to government linkages between the Republic of Singapore and the State of Nevada. I am proud to state that we have accomplished everything that we set out to do in 2003. We now have a electronic automated database of over 920 people / organizations that have shown an interest in SAN's role and also have a growing number of paid SAN members. We have also have begun the process of having regular SAN member meetings. Remember, SAN is as much of a business networking organization as it is a social support organization; for both Nevadans and Singaporeans. I encourage you to become a paid member of SAN and to always review www.singaporenevada.com for updates. I would also ask that you update your information with SAN for 2004. You will notice in the extreme lower left corner of this e-mail a link that says 'UPDATE YOUR PROFILE', please click on that link and provide SAN with your updated contact 2004 information. I sincerely wish you a very happy and safe holiday season; we look forward to your support of SAN in 2004. United We Stand Separated We Perish By Cheryl Moss and Tiffany Chang Since the following article had been published by the "Newsbrief of WBTI", "Nevada Examiner", "Highlights of Seniors United", among others; the whole environment has been much improved for the Asian community. It is still valuable to print the feature article again for the advancement and prosperity of our community and country: --------------------------------------------------------------------- What is the status of our Asian community in U. S.? There is no problem that we have had many outstanding individuals who are very successful in each area of professions. For the view point on the whole body, the Asian community is probably backward a distance away from other racial communities. In the federal government, the cabinet of President between 1997 and 1998 had only two Asians in the main and secondary levels among the 250 people. They were only in the lowest level. Among the 845 judges only 7 of them were from Asia.*1 In colleges which has been famed as "big capital of idealists," normally, the administrators are promoted from the people who are colleagues working for the higher education. From the analysis on the basis of races, a comparison of the rate between the administrators and colleagues will show the opportunity to climb up in the adminitrative ladder of each race. The black people's rate was .21, that means there were 21 administrative personnel among the 100. Indians was .20; white people was .36; Hispanics was .15; but Asians was .06. Obviously, the bad situation was for Asians.*2 In private business, there was only one highest executive of Asian among the so called "500 Enterprises." We can find that there are highest executives who are Asian most only in those business founded by themselves. From the above statistical data, we were acknowledged that the Asian community owns 3.5% of American population has less than 1.0% people on the decision level in the government or private business. In another word, there is much less than 1/3 opportunity to be promoted to the decision level for the Asian people by comparable to other races. This is a serious problem that we should take care of.*3 It is worth for us to unite and struggle once when we know our Asian status and situation. Lots of other racial people got promoted more fastly than Asians in the public and private sectors. This is another reason that we Asian community should more be united for the best guarantee to climb up in the higher ladder. We Asian are mostly good by nature, but we have never competed against any other race without on the basis of knowledge and talent. We follow the founded spirit of U. S. as a country. Here everybody has an equal opportunity for development of his or her own business in spite of the discrimination of classes, religons, sex, and races. What we should ask for is to set up on the basis of equal opportunity by virtue of humane, reasonable, and legal. How can we attain this purpose? The best policy is to unite each other with good work performance, reasonable human relations, and better American education. In the recent ten years, Asian communities have contributed significant result to the winning of elected important officials in Nevada. Asian Community has won recognition for contribution to Nevada by American mainstream. The main reason for this recognition is the great and cooperative wisdom and effort that the Asian communities have continuously participated and offered to the mainstream society. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- References *1. In order to advance the proclamation and creed of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI), it has also launched and participated a series of event and dinner parties for a special tribute to the people who contribute to the peomotion of the quality of life of all our residents and visitors of Nevada. WBTI emphasizes the encouragement and promotion of academic research, community service, and humane spirit since its establishment in January 8, 1996. Feature articles had published by "Nevada Examiner", "Seniors United Highlights Maganzine", among others for many times to unite all the Asian American communities for the event and party to pay a special tribute to Harry Reid as U. S. Senator and Majority Whip of the Senate. In perspective, we need to follow the above two examples of the united forces of all our Asian Americans to win the recognition by the Mainstream of our efforts and wisdom for our community involvement in Nevada. Viewing the following record, it is encouraged that we all the Asian Americans did build our "Great Wall" in this Silver State for community involvement: -----------------------------------------------------

I just want to share with you what Christmas means to me. When my family came to the U.S., we didn't buy a Christmas tree that first Christmas. They were cutting Christmas trees from the campus where we lived. So, we went out and found a small tree they had left on the ground. We brought it home and put whatever decorations we can find- yarns and popcorn . In my second year at UNLV, someone invited my brother and I to a Christmas party. It was hosted by a church youth group. We started going to the youth group and soon received the gift of eternal life. Christmas has become more meaningful for me since then. Why do they exchange presents during Christmas time? Is it because of the Magi who gave gifts to the child Jesus? I'm not sure, but I know the greatest gift is the reason for Christmas. The bible says "the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 6:23b). This free gift is available to everyone. A free gift is not earned or deserved. The reason is because "all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God"(Romans 3:23). So, no one can get to heaven by their good works because all have sinned. God's justice makes it necessary to punish the sin, yet His love provided a way for us to have eternal life. That is why God sent his only Son Christ (fully God and fully man) to die on the cross to pay for the penalty of our sins. If you were to die today, do you know for sure if you will go to heaven? You can receive this gift and know for sure you will go to heaven. How? I'm glad you asked. First, you need to turn from depending on what you have done to get to heaven to what Christ did on the cross for you. Second, you need to receive Jesus as Savior. Third, you need to receive Jesus as Lord (as the Person who has control of your life). Lastly, you need to repent from your sins and turn to follow God. Here is a simple prayer to receive this free gift. "Lord Jesus, I know I'm a sinner and do not deserve to go to heaven. Thank you for dying on the cross for my sins. Please come be my Lord and Savior. I turn from my sins to follow You. Thank you for this gift. In Jesus' name, Amen." This is my simple way of explanation the gift of Christmas. I hope you will keep in touch and let me know if you have been touched by this letter. I can be reached at leimih@yahoo.com. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Sincerely, Mike Lei (Mike currently works as design engineer at Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. and volunteers as church deacon and youth worker at Carrollton Chinese Church in Carrollton, Texas.) 55555555555555555555555555555555555555555555555 77777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777 999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 ******************************************************************************

Governor Lorraine Hunt By Tiffany Chang Governor Kenny Guinn of Nevada reminds us that tourism is the bedrock of Nevada's economy. To expand and diversify our domestic and international markets are absolutely essential to our long-term economic growth and stability.*1 The annual "Governor's Conference on Tourism" was held by the Governor at Caesears Palace on December 15-17. He joined the members of the Commission on Tourism to examine the latest tourism industry issue and trends. The theme was "Celebrating Deversity". It was chosen to draw attention to Nevada's efforts to broaden both its tourism product and market. The Conference on December 15-17 was held in celebrating the diversity that would make the Silver State a perennial leader in worldwide tourism. Governor Kenny Guinn and Lt. Govenor Lorraine Hunt said that Nevada's tourism industry must continue to expand its offerings and reach out to diverse markets that range from outdoor enthusiasts to residents of the world's most populous nation. Speaking at the general session of the Governor's Conference on Tourism at Caesars Palace, he and she each praised Nevada's continuing efforts to supplement its gaming-based core with non-gaming amenities such as shopping, dinning, and outdoor recreation.*2 "I can't overstate the significance of China's potential as a visitor market for Nevada," Lt. Governor Hunt said. "I found modern cities rife with elements of Western culture such as Starbucks Coffee, MTV, the Rat Pack-era music of Frank Sinatra, etc. Up to 10 percent of the country's approximately 1.4 billion residents can now afford to travel overseas, which has positioned China as Nevada's "newest and most-modern market" for tourism." In mid-October, the second top official of the State of Nevada and Nevada Commission on Tourism Exective Director Bruce Bommarito led an approximately 20-member delegation of state tourism, hotel, and private industry representatives on a ten days tour through Beijing, Hong Kong, Macau, and Shanghai. Governor Guinn expresses that he can not overemphasize the significance and importance of bringing attention to all the attractions to Nevada at a time when it faces unprecedented competition for gaming customers. He believes that we are wise to expand our marketing efforts and focus on developing markets in places such as Asia. It is significant for him to point out that in addition to gaming, Nevada has phenomenal cultural, historic, and recreational resources that we must continue to promote. The Governor emphasizes that for our state's economy to thrive, all of the Silver State's tourism opportunities must be effectively marketed to both domestic and international visitors.*3 Lt. Governor Lorraine Hunt points out that she sees the will in the Chinese people and elected officials to make more opportunities and conviences for them to travel America. "They know they want to participate in the world economy," said the Lt. Governor. In addition to the efforts of the City, County, and State of Nevada, Washington Business and Technology Institute has dedicated to help promote the cooperation and development of culture, education, and tourism among Asian countries and Nevada since its establishment on January 8, 1996. With Lt. Governor Lorraine Hunt's inspiration, Dr. Tony Lei and Sally Yu assisted successfully the establishments of the Sister States of Qinghai of China and Nevada, and the Sister Cities of Jiayuguan of China and North Las Vegas. Dr. Tony Lei, President of WBTI, has been honored by China Business Chain, Inc. (CBCI), Shangshai Development and Municipal Government Cooperation Office (SPMGCO), and China State Development and Planning Commission as Chairman of Nevada Expo Mission to China. He is also invited by Xiamen, Fuchien, China to organize a team with high-ranking officials for both educational and business cooperation and development. U. S. Congresswoman Shelley Berkely, Nevada Lt. Governor Lorraine Hunt, and Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman have been invited as its honorable Chairpersons.*4 Lt. Governor Hunt also plans to work with Nevada's congressional delegation to improve the likelihood of opening the travel corridors between the United States and China. Members of the Civil Aviation Administration of China agreed to study the feasibility of direct air service to and from Las Vegas, as well as cargo flights through Reno/Tahoe International Airport. An Office in Beijubg will be opened by the Nevada tourism commission in March 2004 to further develop the Chinese market. In reference to separate resort now being developed by Las Vegas Sands and Wynn Resorts, Lt. Governor Hunt pointed that, "With all of the Nevada gaming companies's casino projects going up in Macau, we're definitely on the Chinese radar." Dr. Bill Eadington, Professor of University of Nevada, Reno, addressed the Governor's Conference on Tourism at Caesars Palace that the profitability of Wynn Las Vegas and the continuing transformation of the California tribal casino market are the biggest question marks facing the Las Vegas economy. "People are attracted to Las Vegas when there's something spectacular to see, " Professor Eadington said.*5 Impressed by the Chinese tourists' saying that "If you didn't visit Las Vegas, you didn't visit America," we need to put more efforts and wisdom together for the development and prosperity of our tourism through the multiple cooperation of construction industry, business organizations, cultural facilities, and educational institutions in Nevada. "Through the perspectives by the nature and in reality, effective lauching for our tourism on the Chinese markets will be more practical with an enphasize on the cooperation and development of business, cultural, and education among China, Taiwan, and Sigapore. We can't just expecting them to come for visit or gaming. Good programs in education for them by the time at their visiting will be reallly one of the strenuous and fruitful reasons for many people to come to Nevada," said Dr. Tony Lei, Peresident of Washington Business and Technology Institute. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- References *1.
