NEVADA GOVERNORˇ¦S POINTS OF LIGHT NOMINATIONS DUE AUG. 25 By Kenny Guinn and his Office*1The Nevada Commission for National & Community Service is currently accepting nominations for the Governorˇ¦s Points of Light Award. Nominations must be submitted no later than Aug. 25, and honorees will be announced at an awards dinner on Oct. 14 in Las Vegas.*2 The Governorˇ¦s Points of Light Award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated ongoing dedication, commitment, and determination in promoting and supporting volunteerism throughout Nevada. It is the highest honor bestowed by the Nevada Commission for National & Community Service, and is a way of inspiring individuals to make a positive impact in the lives of others. Nomination criteria includes: Achievement. The nomination must reflect the accomplishments achieved through the voluntary service performed by the individual, business, or agency. Need. The voluntary service must address human, educational, environmental, or public safety needs. Innovation. The voluntary service should reflect innovative or unique approaches to solving serious social problems. Mobilization. The voluntary service should result in or present opportunities for mobilizing other volunteers. Endurance. The voluntary service must be hands-on and ongoing rather than a one-time activity, with exception of short-term crisis situations. Ibid. ***About Governor Kenny Guinn (by the Editor of this flier): Kenny Guinn, 67, earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in Physical Education from Fresno State University and later obtained a doctorate in Education from Utah State University in Logan. He was named Superintendent of Schools in Clark County and served with distinction in that position until 1978. In his work for the Clark County School District, Guinn was recognized as an effective administrator committed to educational excellence at a time when the county was experiencing exponential student growth. His service to Clark County students was honored when Kenny C. Guinn Junior High School was named for him. In 1978, Guinn began applying his management skills in business as Administrative Vice President for Nevada Savings and Loan in Las Vegas, which later became PriMerit Bank. At PriMerit, he was appointed as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Las Vegas-based bank. Soon thereafter, Guinn was recruited to the energy business as the President of Southwest Gas Corporation and eventually became Chairman of the Board of Directors of that utility in 1993. In 1994, Guinn was recruited by the University of Nevada Board of Regents to serve as interim president of the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. In addition to his one-year term at UNLV, Guinn served the state in leadership roles on a variety of committees and commissions, including the Clark County Community College Advisory Committee, the UNLV Foundation Board of Trustees, the White House Conference on Children and Youth, among others. Guinn has also worked in his community in a variety of volunteer roles, ranging from involvement in the Boy Scouts and Pop Warner Football to the United Way of Southern Nevada and the Southern Nevada Independent Youth Athletic Association. Kenny spent his boyhood in the small, Central Valley town of Exeter, California where he met Dema, his wife of 47 years. Kenny Guinn believes in families. Dr. Kenny Guinn is now the Governor of Nevada, U. S. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock." --- Matthew 7:24-25 of the "Bible" In greetings to the event, celebration of Singapore's National Day, held by the Singapore Association of Nevada (SAN), a team of six people led by Dr. Tony Lei, President of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) were welcomed sincerely by Jonathan V. Galaviz, President of SAN. The celebration party was held in the meeting room of Spring Valley Library, Las Vegas, Nevada on August 14, 2004. The members of the Team included: (1) Dr. and Mrs. Tony Lei; Tony Lei; (2) Ms. Helen Hsueh, Publisher and President of Las Vegas Chinese Daily News (Represented by Mrs. Judy Lei); (3) Ms. Mindy Gao, Reporter and Acting Director of the Las Vegas Office of the Chinese Daily News (World Journal), (4) Miss Audrey Cheng, Reporter and Representative of SNCW and Rep. of President Robert Song of Pan-American LFSC; (5) Miss Iris Zhang, Agent and Representative of America Asia Travel Center Inc.; and (6) Mr. Roger Ku, President of CRK Inc. It was the largest team among the many ones from the American and Asian communities of Nevada in the celebration party. The following is an e-mail to Dr. Tony Lei from President Jonathan Galaviz on August 16, 2004: Dear Tony, The Las Vegas, Nevada celebration of Singapore's National Day on August 14, 2004 (organized by the Singapore Association of Nevada) was a great success. We had over 65 guests; many Americans attended and showed their support for the further development of economic and political relations between the State of Nevada and the Republic of Singapore. The Honorable Mr. Jai S. Sohan, the Consul-General of Singapore (San Francisco Mission), was the guest-of-honor and gave a wonderful speech outlining his agenda for substantial increases in economic and cultural ties between Nevada and Singapore.*2 I would like to thank the Singaporeans who worked so hard on August 14th to ensure that a favorable impression of Singapore was presented to guests and governmental officials on our celebration of Singapore's 39th National Day.
