S. Senator Harry Reid fights for the people of Nevada and America By PAI of WBTI*1 As U. S. Senator Harry Reid fights for the people of Nevada and America, "We'd like to share with our friends some of the golden words of wisdom from the Bible: 'Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun,'" said Dr. Tony Lei, President of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI). It's our pleasure to post the most recent "WHIP ROUND UP" as in the following: "Reid for Nevada" Reid Unveils Website on Veterans History Project*3 *Senator Harry Reid has been working with the Nevada Historical Society and the U.S. Library of Congress to honor Nevada veterans, and he unveiled a new website this week to advance the cause. The Veterans History Project was established to collect and preserve the personal stories and experiences of veterans. Senator Reid would like to encourage the 200,000 veterans in Nevada to participate in this project. His new website can be found at: http://reid.senate.gov/veterans/index.cfm Reid, Ensign Gain Support for Gold and Silver Investments *The U.S. Senate passed legislation by Senators Reid and John Ensign to end unfair tax penalties on investments in precious metals. Reid and Ensign hope that the reduction of taxes on gold, silver, platinum, and palladium will bolster the value of the metals, which would help Nevada's mining industry. Senators Applaud McCarran Airport Grant *Senators Reid and Ensign applauded the announcement that the U.S. Department of Transportation will award a $24.4 million grant for McCarran International Airport. The funds will repair and improve the airport's runways and taxiways, helping the airport keep pace with the demand of Southern Nevada's booming tourism industry Working with Nevadans *Michael Cleveland and Paul Villa of the Reno Police Protection Association and Kelley Reynolds of the Nevada Peace Officers Research Association met with Senator Reid to state their opposition to the transportation of nuclear waste through Nevada to Yucca Mountain, calling the shipments a safety and security risk. *Senator Reid met with Sparks City Council member Ron Schmitt and Assistant City Manager Stephen Driscoll while they were visiting Washington D.C. this week. *Members of the Nevada Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Stores Association met with Senator Reid to discuss their concerns about skyrocketing gas prices. *Clark County District Attorney David Roger and Deputy District Attorney Susan Pate visited Senator Reid in his Capitol office prior to attending the National District Attorneys Association Conference being held this week in Washington, D.C. ***Senators John Ensign and Harry Reid (at right) meet with Realtors from all over Nevada in Senator Reid's U.S. Capitol office. "Week in Review" Senate Extends Special Education Programs - *By an overwhelming majority, the Senate this week reauthorized the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). This common sense approach commits the federal government to work with states to provide education opportunities for children with disabilities. The extension of IDEA was timely, as next Monday marks the 50th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education, the landmark Supreme Court ruling that required educational equality for all children. Corporate Tax Measure Includes Reid Renewable Energy Incentive - *A corporate tax measure that cleared the Senate this week includes a provision by Senator Reid that would create a tax credit for production of renewable energy from wind, solar or geothermal sources. Nevada is rich in renewable resources, and the tax credit would create thousands of jobs in the Silver State while providing a reliable source of power for consumers. The measure now goes to the House. Senators Briefed on Iraq Prison Pictures- *In the wake of allegations of prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad, Senators attended a private briefing with top Pentagon officials where they viewed photographs from the prison that have not been made public. Senator Reid joined Senator John McCain and others in saying that he believes the pictures will ultimately have to be released. Cutting Small Business Health Costs- *May 17-21 is Small Business Week, and Senator Reid is working to help small businesses cut their health care costs. He has introduced the Healthy Employees, Healthy Small Businesses (HEHSB) Act, which would give companies with 50 or fewer employees a tax credit for up to half the cost of their workers' health insurance. "INSIDER'S CALENDAR" The Senate will convene Monday, May 17, at 12:00 noon with a period of morning business until 2:30 p.m. At 2:30 p.m. the Senate will begin consideration of S. 2400, the Department of Defense Authorization bill. A roll call vote in relation to an amendment to the authorization bill is expected to occur at approximately 5:30 p.m. The Senate will consider the DOD Authorization bill throughout the week. The Senate may also consider Bioshield legislation on Monday. Cloture was filed on the nomination of Marcia Cooke to be a District Judge for the Southern District of Florida. An agreement in relation to a number of Executive and Judicial Nominations is being negotiated. If agreement is reached, the cloture vote will be vitiated, however, if no agreement is reached, the Senate will vote on cloture on the nomination on Tuesday at 2:15 p.m. In addition, the Senate will consider H.R. 3104, regarding campaign medals on Tuesday under a short time agreement. "Reid's Words" The pictures I saw from Abu Ghraib prison depicted conduct that was wrong. All those involved, whether civilian, military, officer or enlisted, must be held accountable. But there is no comparison or connection between these actions and the cold-blooded murder of a young American by terrorists. We will hunt down and eliminate these barbaric killers.*3 http://reid.senate.gov The following is something new about our U. S. Senator Harry Reid. We post it for our Friends for Harry Reid. It's good to post the following news of arts here in Las Vegas: Friday, May 14, 2004 Copyright @ Las Vegas Review-Journal Dance and Romance Nevada Ballet Theatre presents the romantic ballet 'Giselle' this weekend By KEN WHITE REVIEW-JOURNAL ***Natalia Chapourskaya performs the title role in Nevada Ballet Theatre's season-finale production of "Giselle." Nevada Ballet Theatre's production of the classic romantic ballet "Giselle," first performed by the company in 2001, returns this weekend to the Judy Bayley Theatre at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.*2 As in 2001, Natalia Chapourskaya dances the title role while Kyu Dong Kwak is the male lead, Albrecht. To date, Chapourskaya has danced the "Giselle" lead in only two productions, the first time seven years ago while a prima ballerina with the St. Petersburg Company in Russia, and the Nevada Ballet Theatre. This will be Kwak's second full-length production of "Giselle" -- he had only danced the second act while with the Universal Ballet in South Korea before dancing Albrecht three years ago with the local ballet company. Featuring the original libretto by Theophile Gautier and librettist Vernoy de Saint-Georges on a theme by Heinrich Heine, with music by Adolphe Adam and choreography by Nevada Ballet Theatre artistic director Bruce Steivel, "Giselle" is based on choreography by Jean Coralli, Jules Perrot and Marius Petipa. The ballet had its world premiere more than 160 years ago at the Theatre de l'Academie Royale de Musique in Paris, with an original cast consisting of Carlotta Grisi as Giselle and Lucien Petipa as Albrecht. "Giselle" was created for Grisi because Gautier was in love with more than just her dancing ability. The original production was such a success that a style of hat and a type of fabric were named after it. In the story, Albrecht is a prince who dons a disguise as a commoner and seeks the love of a peasant girl, Giselle, against a rival suitor, Hillarion. Eventually, Albrecht is exposed for what he is, Giselle finds out he is promised to another woman, and she goes mad, collapses and dies. The second act takes place in a woodland inhabited by the Wilis, girls who have been jilted and died before being wed. Any mortal who enters is doomed to die. Albrecht does so, and the Wilis attempt to dance him to death, but Giselle rescues him. The ballet wraps up with a dose of irony when Giselle dies again with Albrecht looking on. It's a very physical role, Chapourskaya said of Giselle. "You must be calm but very light." Kwak likes it for its drama. "I love a story ballet, you can really get into it. We both enjoy it very much. You don't just pretend, you get into the ballet. It's one of the most famous pure, classical ballets."*3 ------------------------- PREVIEW what: Nevada Ballet Theatre's "Giselle" when: 8 p.m. today; 2 p.m., 8 p.m. Saturday; 1, 4:30 p.m. Sunday where: Judy Bayley Theatre, UNLV, 4505 S. Phillippians 4:6 1. Rev. George Olson, former Chairman of the Kairos Board officially retired during the March Kairos Board meeting. For 20 years, Rev. Olson has faithfully been involved in the planning, development & fundraising of the Kairos ministry. We offer our sincere gratitude and appreciation to Rev. Olson for the love given to and the sacrifices he has made to Kairos. May God continue to watch over Rev. and Mrs. Olson in their retirement years & bless them with good health.*2 2. The new Chairperson of the Kairos Board is Mrs. Susan Chen. We are thankful to Mrs. Chen who has been faithfully supporting Kairos ministry in the past. We appreciate her willingness to take up this important responsibility as Chairperson of the Board. Here, we would also like to thank all of our past and present Board members for their love for the Lord and Kairos. 3. For those of you who listen to our monthly Melody of Life cassettes/cds---you will remember the mini dramas we sometimes have in the programs. The various characters in the mini dramas were voices of many volunteers. We thank them for sacrificing their precious time for this ministry. They are such a blessing and encouragement to us. 4. We are also thankful for all the volunteers who come monthly to help package and mail out our Melody of Life casettees/cds. We especially want to thank Mrs. Carol Chao (wife of General Secretary Emiritus, Rev. David Chao) who leads a group of volunteers each month. We hope that you can help introduce these cassettes/cds to your friends so that more listeners can benefit from them. It takes great effort to produce 8 devotional messages each month to meet the spiritual needs of listeners of varied backgrounds. We thank God for the talent He gave to Ms. Liu in producing these programs. Please continue to uphold her in your prayers. 5. In our Feb newsletter, we mentioned that 88 churches in Singapore will be receiving our Gospel materials. We have received word that many of the churches have already received the materials. Please continue to pray that more Chinese Christians in China and all over the world will benefit from our Gospel materials. 6. Thank you for remembering our Bible Study Video ministry. The special planning committee has completed a proposed plan of action to proceed with the project. May God give us strength, faith and courage as we face difficult challenges ahead.*3 You are welcome to contact me at: P.O.
