本名叫查良鏞,在香港辦過明報,已經八十一歲的金庸不但拿到榮譽學位,還正在努力讀書,希望花四年時間,拿到正式學位。

金庸接受訪問的時候說,他能拿到榮譽博士主要是因為劍橋大學副校長李查茲女士是他的讀者。李查茲看過英文翻譯的鹿鼎記以後,相當喜歡,親自向榮譽博士提名委員大力推薦。

金庸還說,他雖然拿榮譽博士,卻還要拿正式的博士是因為自己想唸書。金庸還不忘消遣自己的表哥徐志摩,說他當年到劍橋,是去談情說愛的,不是去做學問的。所以,在劍橋待了一年,沒畢業,就揮一揮衣袖,悄悄的走了。金庸強調他跟徐志摩的心態是不一樣的。

Subject: RE ARCC today's (6/22/2005) meeting

Dear All,

as I am preparing for the meeting today. I would like to share the following key points with everyone (since some of the members had not been to some of the meetings)

RE: ARCC current status:

As everyone knows that ARCC E-board was able to pass motions and bring the issues regarding Treasurer's Report on Induction Ball to a closure on 6/10. Other necessary steps were also taken as followed:

1. A new By-law was adopted also on 6/10,
2. Treasurer & Vice President were removed.
3. Old bank account was closed and a new one was opened on 6/13.
4. ARCC will be able to reimburse Tess Smith for the bills she paid almost 2 months ago.
5. Planning a membership drive mixer on 7/16 (5-7pm, location to be announced)

In as far as the issues might be raised at today's meeting by non-members, following is an up date for everyone's reference.

RE: Membership status - Refund checks will be issued to the members who wish to withdraw.

1. Jasmine Guo - Not qualified as member due to no voter registration found. Will refund the membership payment.
2. Dolly De Leon - Not qualified as member due to no voter registration found. Will refund the membership payment
3. Frances - No membership payment check record.
4. Mike - Never paid to join.
5. Tess Smith - Membership payment received & will be refunded upon request.
6. Vivienne Kern - No membership payment check record.

RE: Treasurer's report.

a. The report submitted by Ziser on behalf of our Treasurer can not be accepted as a standard Treasurer's report. A sample of ARW's monthly Treasurer's report was given to our Treasurer to use as a reference to prepare her report. It is now 8 weeks passed that the Treasurer is refusing to comply with the duties called for as specified in the by-law (old one).

b. R. Ziser's report did not reflect the full accounting of the tickets sale, additionally, the monies in the bank also are co-mingled with the membership fees (see below).

c. Full accounting of the tickets sale- Here is a simple math question to help everyone to understand what is the central issue:

Total bank deposits done by J. Guo was $4,185, minus $380 checks from membership folder =$3,805 (actual amount deposited by the Treasurer for the 4/24 ticket sales).
$3,805/$35 per ticket=109 guests, add 30 VIP Free tickets= 139 guests (or 14 tables). Using Wellington's receipt of 190-200 guest count, there are 50 to 60 guests payments missing which is about $1,750 - $2,100 cash missing. I only Used ARCC RSVP record of 178 guests.

Not to be redudent, I recap the "INTERNAL" issues ARCC had to address as following:

1. A standard Treasurer's report is still not in compliance.
2. Full accounting of the tickets sales from the Treasurer for the Induction Ball is still missing.
3. Membership folder is not handed over for no reasons.
4. Due to the aboves, payment to T. Smith could not be issued.

As a conclusion, the behavior of the Jasmine Guo can not be accepted not just by ARCC, but by any "professional" organization. I have been bewildered by how many peoples involved in this situation for the past 2 months can not see the "Truth". This is the reason I have been working hard to help bring "Truth" & "Justice" to this situation in the name of the GOP & ASIAN community.

Ensign cuts deal to get leadership post if he wins re-election

WASHINGTON -- If Sen. John Ensign wins re-election to a second term next year, Nevada is likely to become the only state with senators holding leadership posts in both parties.

Ensign said Tuesday he has cut a deal that would clear the way for him to become vice chairman of the Republican conference, the fifth-ranking GOP leader in the Senate.

The move could increase Nevada's clout in the Senate, where Sen. Harry Reid is already the Democratic leader.

Ensign would become a member of the Republican management team, but he said he does not think that would make it more difficult for him to work with Reid.

"We have certain confidences that we don't violate," Ensign said.

The changes would take place at the start of the 110th Congress, which begins in January 2007. Ensign faces re-election in 2006.

As recently as last week, Ensign had been campaigning for an even higher leadership position among Republicans. But he backed off when the more senior Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas announced Friday she would not run for governor in her home state next year.

Hutchison's decision made her the favorite to head the Republican policy committee, the fourth-ranking slot that Ensign had been eyeing.

"I had actually talked to Kay last year about my plans to run (for policy chairman) only because she had decided to run for governor," Ensign said.

When Hutchison reversed course, so did Ensign.

Ensign said he entered into separate negotiations Monday and Tuesday with Hutchison and Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., the current policy chairman, who wants to move up to the number three slot of conference chairman.

"I wanted to avoid a leadership fight," Ensign said.

Currently, Hutchison is GOP conference vice chairwoman but cannot continue in that post because of term limits.

Under the agreement, Ensign will run to succeed Hutchison as conference chair. Hutchison will seek to succeed Kyl as policy chair.

"The bottom line is, I want to be in leadership to shape the direction our policy is going," Ensign said.

John Ensign honored as Vice Chairman of the Advisory Board of WBTI

North Las Vegas Justice Court Judge-elect Natalie Tyrell once wrote a letter of appreciation to Dr. Tony Lei from her Office, "....I want to share with you my favorite quote. It is by the great Winston Churchill. It exemplifies the driving force by which I start out each day. He said, 'We all make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.' ...." By the act of love itself, we are enriched. Love in action is service above self. We encourage people to make service a part of our characters and experience the abundant reward that comes from serving others.

U. S. Senator-elect John Ensign's great-grandfather first came to Nevada almost a hundred years ago as a miner and labored in its towns. This respectable man worked hard to provide for his family and taught his children the value of hard work, integrity, and independence. "The significance of life is to build and educate the continuous lives of the universe," said Dr. Tony Lei, President of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI). People came to America to seek the American dream. Even though not all of them can realize their American dream, eventually they could teach and help their children accomplish their contributions to our country.

As a born-again Christian, people have been inspired by his sincererity, humbleness, and credibility much more than just his wealthy and handsome appearance now. On October 15, John attended the worship service of the Liberty Baptist Church. He offered a short speech of testifmony. He said that he was very frustrated with his first taste of political failure, when he lost by a mere 428 votes to U. S. Senator Harry Reid. However, he believes God and has surrendered his fate to God. John's faith in God helped him to overcome his frustration and disappointment and enabled him to continue to strive to succeed. The Bible says "...though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith - of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire - may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed (1 Peter 1:6-7)". If a window was closed, God might re-open the window or even open a different door for those who are eager to utilize his or her knowledge and expertise to serve. As all Christians acknowledge - with God, anything is possible.

People believed with John that he said, "I have the passion for the fight and the unshakable belief that together we can build a better Nevada." In the Pastor Teis' meeting Office, John agreed with Dr. Tony Lei, also a born-again Chrisitan, that WBTI would honor him as Advisor and Vice Chairman of its Advisory Board. In the first paragraph of this column on September 15, it is stated that on September 7, U. S. Senate Candidate John Ensign wrote: "Please accept my best wishes as you come together in celebration of the Thai Performaning Arts, Appreciation Day 2000. The importance of sharing culture through art and festivities that bring people together serves to enhance all of us more by enriching our lives with the diversity of people and their customs. I especially would like to extend my appreciation to Dr. Tony T. Lei for his commitment and enthusiastic support of the Thai Performing Arts." John received Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree form the Colorado State University in 1985. He accepted Dr. Tony Lei's invitation as a Guest Speaker to talk about protecting Social Security and Medicare for our Nevadan seniors at a Forum held by Seniors United. He believes that America must honor its words to seniors. His scholastic and gentle appearance has won a lot of applause and respect.

In community service, Dr. Tony Lei's hero is the great servant who has given all for the betterment of others' lives. Let our candles fuel a fire that will fan out an ever-lasting circles. With these circles together we can close our eyes and envision a community that is safe, peaceful, and healthy. The Bible teaches: "...let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth (1 John 3:18)." District (Family) Court Judge-elect Cheryl Moss wrote Dr. Tony Lei, "I am delighted and honored to be appointed as an Associate Fellow of the Public Administration Institution of Washington Business and Technology Institute. Thank you for this opportunity to serve, and I hope to gain more knowledge, insight and awareness about public service and community issues through your prestigious institution. I remain dedicated to helping the community, and I am inspired by your leadership, wisdom and guidance. I am also fortunate to have met you and your wife, Judy, because you are both active and dynamic individuals in the community. Your accomplishments and achievements have demonstrated that taking part in the community does make a difference. Best wishes and thank you again for your unselfish kindness, support and encouragement." Power in politics should have a direction that the power based on knowledge is the power of righteousness. John Ensign: a born-again Christian

It is not very possible for anybody all the way with good luck from the beginning to the end of his or her whole life. One will enevitably face somekind of frustration. The attitude that one holds in facing one's frustration will, nevertheless, decide what would be his or her fate to be followed. If anybody gives up soon after he or she gets a frusration or difficulty, then the following days for his or her life will most probably be in dead end.

John Ensign has been impressived as a handsome, strong, and rich man. He has been long time identified as son of big casino leading figure of Mandalay Bay. John believes the struglling effort to success. He used to remind us of his humble beginnings. His mother was a change girl in Reno. Supporting three children with no help from her ex-husband when she met and married Mike Ensign. She went on to become a person and now she is the wife of famous Chairman of Mandalay Bay Group. John's great-grandfather first came to Nevada almost a hundred years ago as a miner and labored in its towns. This respectable man worked hard to provide for his family and teach his children the value of hard work, integrity, and independence. "The significance of life is to build and educate the continuous lives of the universe," said Dr. Tony Lei, President of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI). People came to here even not being able for all of them to realize their American dream but eventurely they could teach and help their children accomplish their contributions for our country.

John's wife, Darlene, encouraged him into his first political race for Congress. CARSON CITY -- Assembly Majority Leader Barbara Buckley has been selected as the best Assembly member for the fourth consecutive legislative session, while Senate Majority Leader Bill Raggio was picked as the best senator at the 2005 Legislature.

"I guess they took pity on an old guy," quipped Raggio, R-Reno, who is 78 and has been a state senator since 1973, the longest tenure in legislative history.

He last was selected best senator during the 1997 session but has ranked near the top in every poll conducted since then by the Review-Journal.

"It is a tremendous honor to be named best Assembly person, especially four (sessions) in a row," Buckley said. "My philosophy is to work hard, be fair to everyone and look out for what is the best for the state as a whole. If you do that, people respect you."

Buckley, D-Las Vegas, is noted for her consumer protection bills. She was the primary author of the laws that regulate the payday loan industry and outlaw "yo-yo car deals," or situations where car dealers con buyers into paying high interest rates.

In addition, she authored the bill to assist Nevadans who want to purchase lower-cost prescription drugs from Canada.

A total of 130 lobbyists, press members and legislators were given ballots and asked to make their choices. Fifty responded. Review-Journal reporters did not vote. More than half of those surveyed selected Buckley and Raggio as the best legislators in their respective houses.

Eric Herzik, interim dean of the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Nevada, Reno, agreed with the selections.

"Raggio got business done," he said. "If Buckley is a liberal, she hides it well. She is best at working the caucus and the rules."

Named as worst Assembly member was Assemblywoman Sharron Angle, R-Reno, who announced her candidacy last week for the Congressional District 2 seat being vacated by Rep. Jim Gibbons, R-Nev.

Selected as the worst senator was Sandra Tiffany, R-Henderson.

Angle was the only Assembly member to vote against the bill that lowered tax increases on owner-operated residential property to 3 percent and 8 percent on commercial property.

Tiffany's ethics were questioned by several voters. To end a growing controversy, Tiffany severed a $10,000 state contract in March that allowed her to sell surplus government vehicles on eBay.

A state law forbids legislators from holding contracts with state government unless they are the sole source for a service or product. Tiffany had been designated by the state Purchasing Division as the sole source for Internet auto sales, although many people sell vehicles on eBay.

Buckley, 44, is a Philadelphia native, a lawyer and has served as executive director of Clark County Legal Services since 1996. She was elected to the Legislature in 1994 and became the first female majority leader in 2001.

With Assembly Speaker Richard Perkins, D-Henderson, leaving his position to run for governor, Buckley is in line to become the first female speaker in 2007. Perkins himself tabbed Buckley as his replacement in a speech just before the Legislature adjourned.

Raggio is a Reno native, a Marine Corps veteran who served in World War II and a lawyer. He spent 12 years as Washoe County district attorney before being elected to the Legislature. He has been the Senate majority leader in nine different sessions and the minority leader in five sessions.

Neither Perkins nor Senate Minority Leader Dina Titus, D-Las Vegas, fared well in the poll. Both are candidates for governor in 2006. Each ranked among the five best legislators in 2003.

Titus conjectured people who back Perkins in the governor's race deliberately graded her low. Her supporters also may have decided against ranking Perkins high, she added.

"Perkins' rating makes sense," Herzik said. "He didn't have a bad session or a good session. His power faded as the session went on."

Titus might have been hurt because of her "acerbic comments in poking fun at Perkins," Herzik added. "They both spent too much time working on how they looked with thoughts to the governor's race."

FATHER扴 DAY LETTER JUNE 2005

Dear Dad,

I feel so blessed that you only asked us to write something for Father抯 Day. You didn抰 ask for money. You didn抰 ask for a new computer. You didn抰 ask for a big dinner to be held in your honor. Dad, this is just one of your good qualities. You are content with little as well as much. Like Apostle Paul, who says 揑 know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. (Philippians 4:12) You have learned not to complain when things don抰 go well. You can laugh at what happens because you have are always grateful about life. You are able to see the silver-lining in things. You rarely complains about anything or feel down when things don抰 go well. You always have a positive outlook on life. You always look to a better future. Like in Philippians, it says 搘hatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable 杋f anything is excellent or praiseworthy think about such things. (Phil 4:8)*2

Because of your ATTITUDE towards life, you are able to take our family where it is today. You kept your vision for a better future. You didn抰 give up. You always move ahead. Like in Philippians 3:13: 揊orgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize. You didn抰 settle down in Taiwan 30 years ago. You pressed forward to pursue the American dream. You gave up the comforts and riches of working in Taiwan and choose to give them up coming to America for the greater goals of the American life and better opportunities for the family. I want to emphasize your dream is not just for yourself, but for the whole family. You didn抰 do it just for yourself, but sacrificed your goals for a better future for the family. May God remember your sacrifices for your family. You didn抰 look back at what you will miss in Taiwan, but look forward and strive towards fulfilling your dream of settling in America. I never hear a word of regret from you about your decision to come to the U.S. You know your dream in life is greater than just being like everyone else. You didn抰 want to just be mediocre. You know life is from God to make something of it. So, you worked hard to make the most of it. Today, you can see how your dream is being fulfilled and your faith in God make all these even more meaningful.
I thank you for taking us to America because here I gained so much, not only opportunities, but my faith in Jesus Christ. Now, I hope to follow in your footsteps to make the most of my life - to give up the temporary comforts of ordinary life for the greater purposes God has made me for.

From your example, I can no longer be satisfied with a mediocre existence. You have shown me that to be exceptional, one must make the sacrifices to pursue the greater goals. I know life is an opportunity from God to make the most of it. I hope to be like you in following my dreams, not being afraid to give up comforts or security and pursue what God is calling me to do. Like Paul says, 揑 press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. (Phil 3:14)

I hope to be like you so that when I run towards the goal, I will not look back. I will not regret and miss what I had given up. But I will forget what is behind and strive on towards the prize. You have trained me well for this race. You have shown me how to stay focused on the goal and make the most of it. Despite what others may say, you stepped up to the challenge and overcame the barriers. I want to follow your example, Dad. I need your prayers and support as I pursue the goals God put into my heart. I thank you that through the years, you have shown your support for us. You have encouraged us to pursue the higher goals and make the most of our life.

I thank you for everything you have done for me and will continue to do. May the Lord bless you richly and help you continue to run to win the prize! Happy Father抯 Day!*3

Happy Father抯 Day! I would like to sincerely thank you for the many years you invested in me as my father and mentor. I appreciate your love for our family and your diligence and efforts to provide for our needs. I pray that God grant you a fabulous day to celebrate this special occasion. You deserve the highest honor and admiration for being a great Dad!*2

I have clearly seen confirmations that the Spirit of God touched your heart in the past year. God truly has answered our prayers. I often give praise and thanks to our Lord for your transformation and share this wonderful testimony with people around me. Please continue to spend time with Mom to pray and read the Bible together.

I am very proud that you are my father. You are a family and community leader who is intelligent, productive, focused, visionary, admirable and successful. You have impacted many lives in positive ways, including Mom, Mike and myself. Mere words cannot adequately explain your influence and accomplishments. Besides the many books you have written, your Presidency in the Washington Business & Technology Institute, Professorship in Taiwan, Doctoral degree, numerous governmental awards/honors, and contribution to the community, you have successfully held our family together and raised two God-serving sons. Congratulations! God has really blessed us through you, from our humble beginnings at the old Pepperdine campus to His abundant provisions to our family today.

I will always remember the times you encourage me to study hard and get good grades. You also supported me to pursue a business-related career. I am very thankful since I know your caring played a role in me obtaining the good job I have right now. I will also always remember your prayers to God during my last trip home. Your prayers are sincere, personal, heart-felt -- truly like you are having a conversation with God. I want to learn from that. Our family now is getting closer and closer together. There is nothing better than all four of us praying, studying the Bible, and go to church together in one heart.

Even though this is a simple letter, I hope it will bring you happiness. I will leave you with these words of blessings from Bible:

Taiwan Benevolent Association of America (TBAA) is going to hold its great 28th Annual Coference on July 29-31, 2005 in Las Vegas, Nevada.*2

全美台灣同鄉聯誼會4/23/2005舉行第27屆第二次理事顧問會議,約有60人與會,與會各地代表包括來自華府DC、新澤西、芝加哥、洛杉磯、舊金山、聖荷西、加州、西雅圖及波士頓分會、橙縣分會籌辦人代表、及拉斯維加斯本地等11個地區,均派代表於會上報告各地會務。會中完成本屆年會的工作分配,同時通過一份關心台灣宣言。該宣言由郎德渝、盧景林、雷動天三人起草。並經大會討論通過,重申台聯會相容和合、不分省級、相互友愛提攜的宗旨。*3

宣言中強調,台聯會希望美國社會與朝野研討未來如何推展美台雙方在經貿、工商、文化、科技交流之合作與實質關係。全美台聯會秘書長陳惠青表示,年會預期有來自全美各地和當地鄉親500多人參與,籌備會細分十幾個小組,這次理事會議確定了責任分工之外,2006年年會已確定將由新澤西分會主辦。*4

Nevada Governor Kenny Guinn appoints Michael Wixom to BOARD OF REGENTS

CARSON CITY Gov. Kenny Guinn today announced the appointment of Las Vegas attorney Michael B. Wixom to the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents. Wixom replaces Douglas Seastrand, who announced last month he would be leaving the Regents to join the faculty at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

揗ichael Wixom is uniquely qualified to serve on the Board of Regents, Gov. Guinn said. 揌e is not only a respected member of the Las Vegas law community, he has a clear understanding and vision for what it will take to continue to elevate higher education in our state. Michael has a deep and underlying passion for education, and for the young people who are going to college in record numbers. I believe he will make an excellent addition to the Board of Regents.

Wixom, 49, graduated with high honors with a degree in Political Science and Economics from Idaho State University in 1980. He was a William L. Leary Scholar and member of the Law Review upon graduation from the University of Utah College of Law in 1986.

揑 am honored to have been appointed by Gov. Guinn to serve on the Board of Regents, Wixom said. 揑 look forward to the opportunity of working with the other Regents and Chancellor Jim Rogers to make Nevada抯 system of higher education the best that it can possibly be.

揗y primary focus as a Regent will be to listen to, to understand and to respond to the concerns of students, faculty and administration. I commit that I will do my best to be thoughtful, thorough and fair-minded. The recent session of the Nevada Legislature has extended significant resources to higher education, and those resources will give us some exciting opportunities. My overall objective will be to maximize those resources and opportunities.

He began practicing law in Nevada in 1986 and was an associate with Jones, Jones Close and Brown of Las Vegas from 1986-88, before moving to First Interstate Bank of Nevada as Vice President and Senior Counsel from 1988-93. He was then Of Counsel at Streich Lang of Las Vegas from 1993-96. He has been Shareholder at Smith, Larsen & Wixom of Las Vegas since 1996.

Wixom is married and has six children and two grandchildren.

台灣加油!

這幾天台灣上空一片陰霾,看不到溫馨的陽光。一會兒是陳水扁「朕躬有罪,罪在萬方」的指責朋友與同志;一會兒是倪敏然為情而自裁,這些令人沮喪和無奈的新聞,帶給台灣社會莫名的震撼,甚至造成撕裂、對立與是非觀念的混淆,也逐步把台灣帶往壓力鍋的臨界點。陰天的日子如果太久太久,會直到太陽再度露臉,才想起世界上還有陽光。感謝洋基 的王建民,我們終於能夠重新認識台灣;感謝王建民,我們終於想起,海內外仍然都還是一家人。*2

而這是隔了多久的陰霾,我們幾乎已無法追憶。太久太久,直到再度體會,我們才發現差點忘了這種海內外同舟一命的感覺。喧嚷噴灑的政治口水,污染了曾有的民主願景;益趨尖銳的族群動員,在台灣人民與海外僑界間擂起戰鼓;藍綠紅黑的各色旗幟與帽子,不斷在撕裂台灣人民、標誌海外僑界。 帄Z選票的政治人物,競相以或高明或笨拙的手段,切割那片土地上的台灣人民。

台灣人民彼此之間,突然擴大了距離,添入了對立。國家定位將變,大多數台灣人民還沒打算選擇,就必須面對後果。政治動員對社會產生的震盪,也讓關心台灣的旅美僑胞變得焦慮。一天到晚,總是有人提醒我們,誰在賣台、誰愛台灣、誰最正港、國家是什麼、我們叫什麼、誰是敵人、誰是同志。喊喊喊,喊了這麼久,台灣人民不見得對自己辨識得比較清楚,卻因此而失去了彼此的溫暖。

我從電視轉播 到播報員不斷的介紹來自台灣的建民王,並讚賞和肯定他全場的優異表現,心中真是無比舒暢。海外僑胞緊盯著電視轉播,一起為王建民祈禱。失分了!僑胞從東岸到西岸抽了多少口氣;一路苦追,台灣人民從北到南捏了多少冷汗;安打!台灣從西到東響起多少喝采;勝利!全體旅美僑胞同時淹沒在歡騰若狂中;落敗,全台灣一起感受著遺憾。終於,我們又緊緊靠在一起,為同樣的悲喜轉折所 縿樱兄疽煌貫閬碜蕴车倪x手喊加油,萬千顆心同步跳動著希望與拚搏。終於,海內外我們又在一起歡呼了。

王建民在美國這個棒球王國擔任一級強 洋基的先發投手,還首勝贏球,成為美國 幭嘧撁赖膫髌嫒宋铮以陔娨暀C前也與有榮焉地起立鼓掌致敬。這時才突然發覺,我已好久好久未曾這樣,為身為台灣的一分子感到驕傲和榮耀。美國職棒在全美27個城市共有30支球 ,王建民倘若站穩洋基 投手丘,並持續在主客場發光發熱,等於是台灣千金難買的免費親善大使,對於MIT與台灣形象的正面意義與宣傳價值,老實說,絕對超過去年雅典奧運的兩面金牌。

「愛台灣」成為這幾年最熱門,也最具 幾h性的話題。海外僑社到處有人追問別人「愛不愛台灣?」也隨時有人指控別人「不愛台灣」,標榜自己「最愛台灣」。這樣的討論,往往漏掉了更重要、更關鍵的問題沒有去問,那就是「為什麼愛台灣?」若只是把台灣當作圖騰來膜拜,不問理由地愛台灣,不可能培養出真正高貴的情操吧!愛台灣,應該是因為台灣有具體的成就、品質,值得珍惜,甚至值得我們為了保護這些成就與品質,而奉獻我們的心力。

與那些空泛的口號相比較,真正「愛台灣」的人,更應該愛王建民,應該為王建民在紐約洋基球場上贏得四萬觀眾起立鼓掌的表現,感激感動吧。在棒球王國最為神聖的洋基殿堂上,王建民不只為自己的前途奮戰,還代表了台灣過去幾十年間,一代代棒球選手們累積起來的成就。王建民得到的掌聲,必然分享給所有這一代代為棒球奮鬥過的台灣人,也必然要分享給所有這一代代關心台灣的每一位海外僑胞。

政治人物聲嘶力竭地告訴我們,什麼才是台灣人民的幸福。但他們所做的,似乎是先拿走台灣人民的幸福,再讓台灣人民對幸福格外渴望。其實,台灣人民要的並沒有那麼複雜,儘管簡單卑微,大部分人希望的只是平穩安定的生活,有歸屬感的社會,有希望的未來。海外僑胞不想在彼此間尋找敵人,那讓人疲憊而寒冷;同樣的,台灣人民更不希望下一代還要繼續如此的切割,那會是台灣人民最可怕的遺產。

筆者認為,中華民國政府及朝野人士必須要有一個深切的體認,亦即棒球已然毫無疑問的是中華民國的「國球」,中壯齡的台灣人幾乎都曾有過熬夜觀看台灣棒球 在國際出賽的記憶,這是超越了族群、黨派及性別的人民共同記憶,更是得以凝塑台灣命運共同體的珍貴觸媒;因此,執政當局應要把環繞著棒球周邊的人事物,真正當做一回事的去經 I。筆者更希望所有的台灣人民能在「國球」之芯钘壸迦骸Ⅻh派的意識形態成見,進而向國際社會展現台灣是個愛好運動、尊重民主的文明國家。

My trip to HK is sort of like 慡ex and the City combined with 4 weddings & a funeral.*2

I was born and raised in HK. March 2005 was a very intense month for me. However, God turn the disaster into my advantage. There are people to see and family matter to take care of. Finally I have time to accomplish them all.

Chee, my best friend who works for HK Times and Fuzi, my big brother抯 college friend who married to an Italian jeweler, are my unofficial social directors in HK. Every morning I either had breakfast prepared by my aunt or had dim-sum with my uncle. The rest of the day, I got to explore the City with 2 trendy, independent, and professional women.

So, what to do and where to go when the HK weather was hot and drizzling thru out the day? A lot because the Smart Card can take you everywhere! To name a few as follows:

Admiralty Centre /Time Square, there is this one-of- a-kind Chinese restaurant that serves unique northern style cuisine. The d閏or is a mix of modern oriental with Euro furnishing. Food is excellent and there are 5 well-trained servers stand-by all time.

Luk Yu Tea House on Stanley Street off Theatre Lane, is the Who抯 Who place where PLU (people-like-us) are often turned away because they do not take new customers. Fortunately, Billy (Chee抯 former associate) is a regular and has his own table so we got to enjoy the old charm tea house 3 times in a role. We even made it our routine to browse around the closed by Shanghai Tang Tailor Shop where we could take a tea break served by Ah Ma (old-fashion servant) and glanced at the movie stars trying out their ready-made.

Then, the Secret Society Hideout where is for members only. My favorite is Chinese Tee Club in Central District. Overlooking those commercial buildings and having our high tea while we were served by professional butlers in a Casablanca surrounding. Imagine those multimillion dollars business deals were in the making at the moment. So much for high tea, let抯 talk about lunch in the very exclusive HK Jockey Club, Happy Valley. A family friend took me there for Chinese dim-sum along with his 83 years old mother who lives in a mansion on Jardin Hill. The food was excellent. I found out later that the Club had an award winning world famous chef.

The first time I met Chee抯 boyfriend was at the Foreign Correspondents Club. The menu is a combination of traditional Chinese and 50抯 American. After the doorman let us in, the manager asked us to show our membership card prior to be seated. Similar to all other private clubs, they are computer accessible in the dining room hallway. Down below is a cozy jazz club. Of course, we just had to drop by for some fine music.

Among all these private clubs, my least favorite was the Charter Club where Fuzi picked out for her college reunion. All dishes were tasteless and there was a long wait in between them. The dinner was a disappointment but the company was fun. Afterwards Marco, Fuzi抯 husband, treated us saki in Lan Kwai Fong. None of us was driving that night so we emptied out several big bottles and laughed till the end of dawn inside the private room.

Since Fuzi is a fashion police and Chee is a high tea frantic, we spent days window shopping and had high tea in Causeway Bay, Cheung Chau, Soho, Repulse Bay, and Clear Water Bay.

One final note, those people that my late mother asked me to contact and I did. I also met up with a special long time friend, Frank. All IN all, you can say that this trip is mission accomplished.*3

North Las Vegas mayor re-elected
Republican accused challenger of dirty politics while easily winning third term

North Las Vegas Mayor Michael Montandon on Tuesday claimed victory over challenger Andres Ramirez, after a campaign marked on both sides by accusations of dirty politics.

Montandon, a Republican, won a third term with 59 percent of the vote, according to unofficial results from the Clark County Elections Department.

"I felt really confident all along, but that doesn't take away from the high," Montandon said as he celebrated his win at Jerry's Nugget Casino with friends and family.

As for his plans for the upcoming term, Montandon said, "Nothing really changes from this point forward. We're just going ahead like we've been doing."

Those voting for Montandon said they either didn't like Ramirez's campaign tactics or they felt Montandon was doing a good job.

After conceding defeat about 8:30 p.m., when nearly complete results had him trailing Montandon by 17 percentage points, Ramirez said he was proud of his campaign.

"We wanted to give voters an opportunity to chose, to give them an option, and to hold the mayor accountable," Ramirez said. "I think we did that. We just didn't have enough voters turn out for us."

Bill Beatty, 65, who was only the ninth voter to cast a ballot at Squires Elementary School, said he was drawn to the polls to vote for mayor.

"I'm a Democrat, but I didn't vote for the Democrat," he said. "I voted for Montandon, mainly because I didn't like a lot of the political crap the other guy was pulling."

Toni Lopez, a 40-year-old Democrat voting at Lincoln-Edison Elementary, said although she liked Ramirez personally, she still felt Montandon should stay in office.

"The mayor's race isn't just about the mayor," Lopez said. "He's part of the City Council, part of the team. I think Montandon should stay with the team."

Even with substantially lighter campaign coffers than the incumbent, Ramirez riled the mayor by purchasing Internet domain names Montandon could have used for his campaign Web site. Ramirez also accused the mayor of illegally placing political signs on public property.

Then, as the campaign season started winding down in May, Montandon filed a criminal complaint alleging Ramirez stole Montandon campaign signs and replaced them with Ramirez signs. Police later recovered 48 signs from Ramirez's campaign headquarters.

Those who supported Ramirez, a Democrat, said they either felt the establishment needed some new blood or that they wanted a Hispanic in office so the fastest growing and largest minority group in the community would have a voice in city government.

Salvador Romero, a 44-year-old voter who said he is nonpartisan, said Ramirez won his vote largely because he appealed to Hispanics.

"I wanted someone who might start to give us Hispanics a voice," Romero said in Spanish. "There's hardly anyone out there advocating for us, and there are a lot of us out here in North Las Vegas now."

In North Las Vegas, the second fastest-growing large city in the country, Hispanics represent about 38 percent of the population and blacks about 19 percent.

Eddie Flores, a 31-year-old Democrat voting at Tom Williams Elementary School, said Ramirez's being Hispanic helped sway his vote toward the challenger. But, he added, "I'm always for the underdog."

Councilwoman eyes several plans

North Las Vegas City Councilwoman Stephanie Smith on Tuesday won her third term in a blowout against challenger Jean Withers.

"I feel very fortunate," Smith said from her home.

Smith, a Democrat, won more than 75 percent of the vote, according to unofficial results.

Smith's challenger, Jean Withers, a relative newcomer to the city, said her defeat Tuesday would not deter her from continuing to attend City Council meetings.

"I'm keeping my hand in this business," she said. "They haven't heard the last of me yet."

Smith, a middle school music teacher in the Clark County School District, said she is excited to start her third term, in which she hopes to play a role in getting a senior center built in North Las Vegas.

She said she also plans to help shape the newly acquired Craig Ranch Golf Course into a regional park with an amphitheater.

"I'm looking forward to continuing all the good things we've started," she said.

Among other city plans she said she wants to be involved in are building a new veterans hospital, overseeing redevelopment efforts and planning for the next Bureau of Land Management acreage release.

Most of the voters casting ballots for Smith said she won their vote either because they thought she was doing a good job or because they had seen her billboards and recognized her name.

Roy Brown, a 60-year-old Democrat, said he voted for Smith because "I know Stephanie, and I hear a lot about how she's doing a good job for us and that she's showing herself to be clean."

"Her opponent, Withers, I didn't know much about her," he said. "She should've showed herself more."

Becky Hansen, a 36-year-old Democrat, voted for Smith "just because that's who my mom told me to vote for," she said. "But to be honest, I hadn't heard anything about either candidate."

It is not far away from Taipei. Yangmingshan, the Grass Mountain, is a scenic place with a beautiful park.

This, the newest of Acme Physical Dance Theatre抯 National Park series reveals a handful of the mysteries surrounding Yangmingshan or "Grass Mountain". This park is significant for many reasons. The most immediate of these is in its function as a natural sanctuary to the residents of Taipei City. Its close physical proximity acts as a huge garden for city dwellers to escape their busy and stressful lives. Indeed, historically, it has served this function since the beginning of Japanese rule (1895.)

Grass Mountain is also unique in its geological makeup. Volcanoes and fuming crevices steam and fume through a barren tortured landscape, while a stone抯 throw away,butterflies dance among masses of vibrant trees, shrubs and greenery. Owing to this layered nature of Yangmingshan park, choreographer Shih Gee-Tze has chosen to present the multiple aspects of meaning through 4 separate acts: 揃lossoming, 揜ed Mountain, 揘ight Scenery, and 揗ountain Living. *2

Nevada Governor Kenny Guinn: 2005 BUDGET OFFERS ROADMAP TO PROSPEROUS FUTURE FOR NEVADA

The efforts of a good number of legislators, department heads, staff members and citizens culminated on Tuesday, June 7, with the final approval of the budget for the 2005-2007 biennium. I am eternally grateful to all of the individuals who were part of this process.

In January, during my State of the State address, I asked our legislators to look beyond party lines and to work together in order to better the future for all Nevadans. I believe that the 2005 Legislature has accomplished this goal. The next two years promises to be one of the most productive in our state抯 history, as we continue to benefit from a strong economy, great population growth and a strong feeling of optimism about the future among our citizens.

I would like to highlight a few of the more important pieces of legislation that are contained within the budget. I believe these items clearly reflect a shared sense of responsibility by our legislators over the past 121 days, and will serve in the coming months and years as excellent building blocks for continued prosperity and opportunity for the people of Nevada.

n I went on record early, even before the session began, that a $300 million rebate to the citizens of Nevada, along with a plan to address rising property taxes in the state, would be the most important work of the 2005 Legislature. I am happy to report that both the Senate and Assembly had rigorous and lively debate regarding the $300 million rebate. The bottom line: Nevadans will benefit from this unprecedented windfall that the state has experienced, and that checks, administered through the Department of Motor Vehicles, will soon be arriving in the mail. Individuals eligible for the rebate can receive a minimum of $75 and up to a $275 cap.

n The passage of Assembly Bill 489, which offered the citizens of Nevada property tax relief, was important for two reasons. First, it came in time to have an immediate impact. Second, in what has been called its 揾ybrid form, it offers tax relief for three important segments of our population businesses, homeowners, and renters. I said publicly that AB 489 is not perfect, but it is an important and timely first step in offering the people of Nevada relief from rising property taxes.

n Thanks to a bipartisan effort among leadership in both the Senate and the Assembly, it was announced early in the session that a plan to save the Millennium Scholarship had been reached. Some fine-tuning of the program抯 requirements occurred early Tuesday morning, with a 12-credit cap established, as well as a 2.75 grade point average requirement for a student抯 second year in college. Also under the agreement, record-setting revenues generated by the state, coupled with reallocation in several budgetary areas as well as money from abandoned property, will be appropriated for the Millennium Scholarship. The families of Nevada can rest assured that the Millennium Scholarship will have a life well into the next decade, if not further.

n During my State of the State Address, I stressed that an initiative to set aside $100 million in remediation funding would give our troubled schools greater flexibility in meeting goals they have set for themselves and for meeting goals under No Child Left Behind. I purposely left this initiative open-ended, with the hope that the $100 million could be used in a variety of ways. Already, with at least $22 million of this fund earmarked for all-day kindergarten, we are moving into an era of stricter accountability and strategically targeted funding initiatives to meet the needs of our troubled schools.

n Classified and unclassified employees will be granted a 2 percent COLA effective July 1, 2005 and an additional 4 percent COLA effective July 1, 2006. Perhaps even more importantly, classes that have experienced a significant market pay disparity, have high turnover, and recruitment difficulty, will be granted a 2-grade increase. Groups receiving the grade increase include: peace officers, nurses, dispatchers and correctional classes.

n The approved 2005 Capital Improvement Program (CIP) included funding for 26 new construction projects, 43 maintenance projects, and seven statewide projects in the amount of more than $419 million. This represents the largest CIP ever approved by the Legislature. Included in the record CIP is a substantial and record-setting investment in higher education, with $200 million in new buildings.

n The budget represents the largest investment the State of Nevada has ever made in the areas of human resources and mental health, totaling more than $4.7 billion in the 2006-2007 biennium. The budget is some $814 million more than the current biennium, and some $316 million of this budget is from general fund dollars. New initiatives include the new psychiatric hospital in Las Vegas, scheduled to open in May 2006; staffing to operate 217 psychiatric beds; funding to address mental health caseload growth; increases for medication clinics, establishment of the first-ever Suicide Prevention Office; expanded services for people with disabilities; funding to cover waiting lists for Early Childhood Services; reduced foster care case management workloads; a new automated system for Child Care.

n State matching funds for construction of new southern Nevada Readiness Center for the Nevada Office of the Military. Legislature also made permanent the Board of Regents waiver of tuition for National Guard members attending Nevada抯 colleges.

n The budget for the Nevada Department of Transportation includes nearly $1 billion in capital outlay for highway improvements and preservation, and is supported by $400 million in bonds. It represents the most ambitious highway project in the state抯 history. NDOT抯 only bill, AB 82, which allows the designation and penalties for high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lands, and regulates oversized farm equipment on interstate highways was approved unanimously by both houses. AB 82 will help improve traffic operations and safety on Nevada抯 highways.

n About $10 million in economic development money has been made available to the primary economic development entities of southern Nevada and northern Nevada the Nevada Development Authority and the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada.

n Excellent progress was made regarding my affordable housing initiative. Positive dialogue with local government and federal officials has begun, support is evident in both houses, and I am optimistic that soon affordable housing will be made available to the citizens of Clark County through the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act.

n The passage of AB 458 authorizes the issuance of general obligation bonds for the state to continue to carry out the Environmental Improvement Program at Lake Tahoe, in areas such as forest restoration, creation of hiking trails and habitat enhancement.

n The Department of Cultural Affairs will receive an increase of $400,000 per biennium for Arts Council Grants Programs the first significant increase to deal with population growth since 1997. Also, SB 4 reauthorizes and increases annual grants to be awarded under the Commission for Cultural Affairs program from $2 million to $3 million. A new building was included in the CIP to connect the Nevada State Museum Mint building to the new North building.

All of this would not have been possible without the bipartisan efforts of the Senate and Assembly. A year ago, given some of the fracture that had occurred during the last legislative session, many wondered if we could have a productive 2005 session. The work of the members of the Senate and Assembly has proven the doubters wrong; together, we have created a formidable roadmap for our state抯 future.

This was my fourth and final legislative session, and I am eternally grateful to all of the members of our Legislature for their hard work. I believe the members of our Legislature are diligent, thoughtful and talented people. It has been a distinct pleasure to work with all of you. I believe each and every one of you has helped lay before the people of Nevada an exciting and bold roadmap to the future. I would also like to highlight the work of a host of department heads, individual staff, and all of the members of the Legislative Counsel Bureau, who as always proved to be an invaluable resource during the budget proceedings. Thanks to the work of these people and scores of others over the past 121 days, the future for Nevada is very bright indeed.

I will not soon forget the 2005 Legislature, and what it has meant to the lives of the citizens of our great state. You have all made a difference, and you should be proud of your work.

Green Lake ---a beautiful place in Taiwan

One of the highlights of living in Taipei is the city's ability to surprise and delight you with adventure and discovery at every nook and corner. Colorful temples set apart from a background of plain, drab buildings; snaking rivers and bubbling streams crisscrossing sprawling streets; enormous parks forming islands of green in congested neighborhoods; crowded apartment buildings filled with friendly faces -- all result in a love-hate relationship between the city and its people.

At times, the busy-ness of life gets too much to handle and the "hate" emotion becomes dominant. Though the best solution seems a hop on the next plane off the island or a short trip down South, this is not always possible. Fortunately the city presents the antidotes to its own problems, as it is scattered with peaceful havens sure to take your mind off the torments of urban life.

Situated mid-stream of Hsin Tien river is one such place -- the green lake, once renowned as one of the twelve most beautiful tourist landscapes of Taiwan. Also known as Bitan or Chi Pi Lake, this popular recreation spot is located in the north of Hsintien city, just a stone's throw from the Hsintien MRT station.

The water at Bitan is green and smooth. Sheer cliffs loom over the tranquil lake and on a clear day, the calm surface is glazed with the reflection of white, puffy clouds. A 200 meter long suspended bridge stretches like a rainbow across the river, linking the east and west banks.

On the weekends, the banks of Green Lake are thronged with crowds eager to have a fun-filled day. The surface of the water is dotted with dainty swan-shaped pedal boats, which operate everyday late into the night. At NT$300 per hour, they prove to be good value for money. Apart from getting some exercise, one can also venture down the river and explore the stunning beauty that lies ahead.

Apparently, boating isn't the only preferred activity. Dutiful dog owners can be seen walking their canine friends of all shapes and sizes. Adults and children of all ages enjoy cycling on the cemented paths along the east bank. Toddlers squeal with delight as they gyrate on various rides, blow bubbles or simply run on the grassy banks.

Zealous fish catchers sit dead-still holding their fishing rods amongst the flurry of activities around them. Singing enthusiasts exhibit their vocal skills at the karaoke stalls. People looking for some harmless fun spend hours at the scores of game stalls that have mushroomed on the east side of the river.

Hungry visitors relish the culinary delights offered by various restaurants, cafes, shops and roadside stalls. Tea lovers sip tea, including the famous Pouchong tea of Hsintien, at a large teahouse overlooking the river. In short there is something for everyone here.

No trip to the Green Lake can be complete without having a leisurely meal at one of the river front eateries. From hot pot to stinky tofu, from Italian cuisine to a local Taiwanese affair -- there are a range of options to choose from.

After exploring the area, we settled for the "Riverside Bistro" -- an Italian restaurant situated at the east bank amongst a row of others. The ambience was relaxing and the service was good. Our seat offered a stunning view of the riverbank, as we were lucky enough to get a corner table at the crowded place.

Having a delicious, aromatic meal while overlooking the pristine water, with egrets venturing into the now almost-deserted waters, and a few swan boats zigzagging their way around, was a treat for the senses and arguably the best part of my day trip.

Though not a place where one can escape the crowds (at least on weekends), a visit to the Green Lake can nonetheless prove to be a fun-filled family outing. A candlelight dinner at one of the restaurants on the riverbank can even make for a delightful romantic date. Since the boat quay and the shops are open late into the night, this is an ideal place to visit on a day when you get up too late to visit other tourist spots of the city.*2 [2005/4/21]

Pepperdine University ---The Graduate School of Education and Psychology (GSEP)
Acknowledges Student Workers*1

Faculty and staff gathered at the West Los Angeles Graduate Campus on Wednesday, May 11, to recognize the service of thosegraduate assistants who will be walking in the commencement ceremony on May 21 and July 9. Dean Margaret J. Weber shared a few words of appreciation to start the event and GSEP staff members spoke about the contributions of individual assistants, who then received certificates of appreciation.

The GSEP Alumni Association sponsored the event, and alumni director, Margaret Mary Mayer, conveyed her gratitude for the students and informed them of the many benefits they receive as a Pepperdine University Alumni.*2
