"Post by PAI....." (See our letter to you on 8/24/04 please.)From: JPontic177@aol.com Date: Fri, 1 Oct 2004 12:48:33 EDT Subject: Paradise club monthly letter September 4, 2004 Dear Club member; Our next meeting will be in conjunction with our $5 Dinner with Congresswoman Shelley Berkley and Congressional District 3 Candidate Tom Gallagher Wednesday, September 20, 2004* at 6:30 PM, at our new meeting place, the Teamsters Local #14 building, 1250 Burnham Street. See map below. Please invite your friends. (*Soon after receiving this e-mail in the morning of Friday, October 1, 2004, Dr. Tony Lei called John to correct the date from September 20 to October 20. And John corrected it soon afterward with thanks.) We are getting closer and closer to the Presidential election and we must do all we can to bring the Kerry/ Edwards campaign to victory. The most important thing we can do is to get Democrats registered and then to the polls to vote. The State of Nevada with its 5 electoral votes doesn¡¯t sound very important but we are. In 2000 we only had 4 electoral votes but if we could have carried the State for Gore he would be President of the United States right now. I have a personal stake in this election as I have the honor of being one of the 5 members of the Electoral College for the Democratic Party and will go to Carson City to cast a vote when Kerry wins. Besides the Presidential race we must also work hard to elect our other Democrats to Congress, the State Senate , Assembly, County Commission and other non Partisan races where there are Democrats against Republicans. To do volunteer work call Democratic headquarters 737-8683 or stop by their new headquarters at 1325 E. Vegas Valley Dr. ( East of Maryland Pkwy). It is imperative that we keep the County Commission Democratic. We must support Tom Collins and David Goldwater in their races, to help Tom call 645-2617, David 796-5644. The Woman¡¯s Democratic Club is having a 50th Golden Anniversary Gala Dinner on Saturday October 9th at Mandalay Bay. Tickets are $125, for more information call 615-4522. I look forward to seeing you at the dinner on the 20th . John Ponticello President MARK THE $5 DINNER DOWN ON YOUR CALENDAR SO YOU WONT FORGET IT. 5555555555555555 8888888888888888888888888 666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666 ***************************************************

"With the excellences of knowledge, humanity, and patriotism inspired by U. S. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao, Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) has contributed its many years effort and wisdom to the encouragement and promotion of academic research, community service, and humane spirit for Nevada. Nevada is honor to have WBTI under her spiritual Chairpersonship and I am especially honor to be a M.I.S. Manager of the Graduate School of Business and Public Administration (GSBPA) of WBTI," humble as he is, River Sun chatted excitedly during the celebration dinner party at the Gee Joon Chinese Restaurant of Horseshoe Club. The Moon Festival of Midautumn has been many thousand years celebrated as a day for patriotism by the Chinese people in the Far East and Southeastern Asia. The party was held by WBTI in Las Vegas on September 11, 2003.

***** "Post through PPAA18....." (See our letter to you at 8:08 a. m., August 25, 2004 please.) [Date: Thu, 30 Sep 2004 13:32:32 -0700 Subject: A Message from Governor Kenny C. Guinn - September 30, 2004] DMV ADDS NEW CONVENIENCES By Dr. Kenny C. Guinn Over the past year, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has taken aggressive steps to eliminate long lines and to improve customer service. I would like to take a moment to tell you about the two latest conveniences DMV has added. First, the department has added driver license renewals to its popular self-service kiosks in Las Vegas, Reno, and Carson City. DMV continues to encourage motorists to renew by Internet, telephone or mail when they are eligible to do so. By using kiosk renewal, motorists can renew their licenses up to 30 days after expiration and receive their renewal sticker immediately. The department¡¯s self-service kiosks for registration renewals debuted earlier this year and have been a resounding success. In August, for example, 10,416 customers avoided waiting in line and completed their registration renewal by kiosk. This number represents nearly 10 percent of the total registration renewals for the month. Motorists with a vehicle registration suspension due to an insurance lapse are only a click away from being first in line. They can now reinstate the registration online at www.dmvnv.com. Certified letters sent by the department to notify owners of the suspension now contain an access code that can be used to reinstate the registration online. Motorists are also given the opportunity to renew the vehicle registration if it is due. New services and new staff at DMV offices have resulted in dramatically reduced wait times within the past year. Wait times in the Las Vegas offices now average slightly less than one hour; the wait at the Galletti Way office in Reno is now averaging about 65 minutes. The department has set an overall goal of reducing wait times to one hour or less at all times, and it appears that DMV is on track to meet this overall goal, which is good news for our state¡¯s drivers. 66666666666 77777777777777777777 888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888 *************************************************

***** "Post through PPAA18....." (See our letter to you at 8:08 a. m., August 25, 2004 please.) The American dream realized by U. S. "Our nation needs an immigration system that serves the American economy and reflets the American dream." *2 "Elaine Chao and John Ensign are two of the most comtemporary heroes who have realized the Ameican Dream which was encouraged for a long time by U. S. Senator Harry Reid. Under the spiritual leadership of them, WBTI has a bright endeavor for its proclamation and creed on the belief that the encouragement and promotion of academic research, community service, and humane spirit will bring our effort for a peaceful and prosperous community," said Christine Hu, Esq., at the time when she was informed of her appointment as an Assistant Fellow of the Public Administration Institution (PAI) by WBTI on December 16, 2003.*3 People are interested in having a little more understanding about the successful stories of U. S. Senator John Ensign and U. S. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao after they read the above expression by Christine. It's our pleasure to offer our viewers more about it by reprinting the following three feather articles: ------------------------------- John Ensign honored as Vice Chairman of the Advisory Board of WBTI By Tiffany Chang North Las Vegas Justice Court Judge-elect Natalie Tyrrell once wrote a letter of appreciation to Dr. Tony Lei from her Office, "....I want to share with you my favorite quote. It is by the great Winston Churchill. It exemplifies the driving force by which I start out each day. He said, 'We all make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.' ...." By the act of love itself, we are enriched. Love in action is service above self. We encourage people to make service a part of our characters and experience the abundant reward that comes from serving others. U. S. Senator-elect John Ensign's great-grandfather first came to Nevada almost a hundred years ago as a miner and labored in its towns. This respectable man worked hard to provide for his family and taught his children the value of hard work, integrity, and independence. "The significance of life is to build and educate the continuous lives of the universe," said Dr. Tony Lei, President of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI). People came to America to seek the American dream. Even though not all of them can realize their American dream, eventually they could teach and help their children accomplish their contributions to our country. As a born-again Christian, people have been inspired by his sincererity, humbleness, and credibility much more than just his wealthy and handsome appearance now. On October 15, John attended the worship service of the Liberty Baptist Church. He offered a short speech of testifmony. He said that he was very frustrated with his first taste of political failure, when he lost by a mere 428 votes to U. S. Senator Harry Reid. However, he believes God and has surrendered his fate to God. John's faith in God helped him to overcome his frustration and disappointment and enabled him to continue to strive to succeed. The Bible says "...though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith - of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire - may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed (1 Peter 1:6-7)". If a window was closed, God might re-open the window or even open a different door for those who are eager to utilize his or her knowledge and expertise to serve. As all Christians acknowledge - with God, anything is possible. People believed with John that he said, "I have the passion for the fight and the unshakable belief that together we can build a better Nevada." In the Pastor Teis' meeting Office, John agreed with Dr. Tony Lei, also a born-again Chrisitan, that WBTI would honor him as Advisor and Vice Chairman of its Advisory Board. In the first paragraph of this column on September 15, it is stated that on September 7, U. S. Senate Candidate John Ensign wrote: "Please accept my best wishes as you come together in celebration of the Thai Performaning Arts, Appreciation Day 2000. The importance of sharing culture through art and festivities that bring people together serves to enhance all of us more by enriching our lives with the diversity of people and their customs. I especially would like to extend my appreciation to Dr. Tony T. Lei for his commitment and enthusiastic support of the Thai Performing Arts." John received Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree form the Colorado State University in 1985. He accepted Dr. Tony Lei's invitation as a Guest Speaker to talk about protecting Social Security and Medicare for our Nevadan seniors at a Forum held by Seniors United. He believes that America must honor its words to seniors. His scholastic and gentle appearance has won a lot of applause and respect. In community service, Dr. Tony Lei's hero is the great servant who has given all for the betterment of others' lives. Let our candles fuel a fire that will fan out an ever-lasting circles. With these circles together we can close our eyes and envision a community that is safe, peaceful, and healthy. The Bible teaches: "...let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth (1 John 3:18)." District (Family) Court Judge-elect Cheryl Moss wrote Dr. Tony Lei, "I am delighted and honored to be appointed as an Associate Fellow of the Public Administration Institution of Washington Business and Technology Institute. Thank you for this opportunity to serve, and I hope to gain more knowledge, insight and awareness about public service and community issues through your prestigious institution. I remain dedicated to helping the community, and I am inspired by your leadership, wisdom and guidance. I am also fortunate to have met you and your wife, Judy, because you are both active and dynamic individuals in the community. Your accomplishments and achievements have demonstrated that taking part in the community does make a difference. Best wishes and thank you again for your unselfish kindness, support and encouragement." Power in politics should have a direction that the power based on knowledge is the power of righteousness. We wish that a pure fountain may prosper and enrich our spendid and golden country through the spirit that knowledge calls, ultimately, for a life of service. "In God we trust. Life is for the purpose to serve our lovely society," Dr. Tony Lei stated. In Seniors United, we shall have a nice celebrating party for Christmas with good entertainment. We invited heartfeltly all our members and friends to join us a joyful reunion. Wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!*4 --------------------------------------- John Ensign: a born-again Christian By Tiffany Chang It is not very possible for anybody all the way with good luck from the beginning to the end of his or her whole life. One will enevitably face somekind of frustration. The attitude that one holds in facing one's frustration will, nevertheless, decide what would be his or her fate to be followed. If anybody gives up soon after he or she gets a frusration or difficulty, then the following days for his or her life will most probably be in dead end. John Ensign has been impressived as a handsome, strong, and rich man. He has been long time identified as son of big casino leading figure of Mandalay Bay. John believes the struglling effort to success. He used to remind us of his humble beginnings. His mother was a change girl in Reno. Supporting three children with no help from her ex-husband when she met and married Mike Ensign. She went on to become a person and now she is the wife of famous Chairman of Mandalay Bay Group. John's great-grandfather first came to Nevada almost a hundred years ago as a miner and labored in its towns. This respectable man worked hard to provide for his family and teach his children the value of hard work, integrity, and independence. "The significance of life is to build and educate the continuous lives of the universe," said Dr. Tony Lei, President of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI). People came to here even not being able for all of them to realize their American dream but eventurely they could teach and help their children accomplish their contributions for our country. John's wife, Darlene, encouraged him into his first political race for Congress. Earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Colorado State University in 1995, his scholarstic and gentle appearance has won lots of applause and respect from knowledgeable ladies in social activities. It was when he was attending veterinarian school that John became a born-again Christian. He was urging by Darlene to become involved in a men's Christian group. In the first paragraph of this column on September 15, it stated that on September 7, U. Tony T. Lei for his commitment and enthusiantic support of the Thai Performing Arts." He accepted Dr. Tony Lei's invitation as a Guest Speaker to talk about protecting Social Security and Medicare for our Nevadan seniors at a Forum held by Seniors United. He believes that America must honor its word to seniors. On October 15, John attended the worship service of the Liberty Baptist Church. He offered a short speech of testifmony. He said that he was so frustrated of his first time to taste political failure, when he lost by a mere 428 votes to U. S. Senator Harry Reid. He believes God. He has surrenderring his fate to God. As a born-again Christian, people has inspired of his sincererity, humbleness, and credibility much more than just of his appearance now. In the Pastor Teis' meeting Office, John agreed with Dr. Tony Lei that WBTI would honor him as Advisor (effective on 10/17) and Vice Chairman (effective on 11/08 when elected as Senator) of its Advisory Board. If a window was closed, God might re-open the window or even open a door for the people who is eager to utilize his or her knowledge and expertise to serve. The matter is that we should believe God. Congretulations! Republican U.S. Senator-elect Honorable John Ensign. By the act of love itself, we are enriched. Love in action is service above self. Make service a part of our character and experience the abundant reward that comes from serving others. "I am delighted and honored to be appointed as an Associate Fellow of the Public Administration Institution of Washington Business and Technology Institute. Best wishes and thank you again for your unselfish kindness, support and encouragement," wrote District (Family) Court Judge-elect Cheryl Moss to Dr. Tony Lei. Power in politics should have a direction that power based on knowledge is the power of righteousness. We wish that a pure fountain may prosper and enrich our spendid and golden country through the spirit that knowledge calls, ultimately , for a life of service. "In God we trust. Life is for the purpose to serve our lovely society," Dr. Tony Lei points out.*5 ---------------------------------------- References *1. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao says foreign-owned companies employ millions of American By GSBPA of WBTI "Foreign companies have created millions of jobs in the United States, far overpacing the amount of work that American business have shifted abroad," said U. S. Labor Secretary Ealine Chao on September 1, 2004. According to "The Associate Press," Chao said the administration is concerned about every lost job, but realizes job shuffling is part of a dynamic economy that constantly requires workers to get new training. She said the Bush administration spends $23 billion on more than 30 job training programs. "We understand the concern and the anxiety on this issue," Chao said. "My point also is we live and work in a worldwide economy..... If we isolate ourselves from the worldwide economy, we will put in jeopardy the 9 million jobs that american currently hold in foreign-owned companies."*9 It is our pleasure to post the the following feature article which was shown on the PPAA18 at July 12, 2004 (a concise by the delete of Labor Department's Press Release): U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao Outlines Accomplishments of High-Level U.S. Department of Labor Delegation to China By GSBPA of WBTI*1 At the invitation of the Chinese Ministry of Labor and Social Security, U. S. Secretary of Labor, Ms. Elaine Chao, visited China from June 21 to 24 in 2004. The U. S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao said in Beijing on Thursday, June 24, 2004 that her visit to China was fruitful. "Chao signed four agreements during her trip to enhance cooperation in raising the living standard and working conditions for employees. She also announced the US would donate 3.5 million US dollars to China to help combat AIDS through workplace education program," reported the Xinhua News Agency on Thursday, June 24, 2004.*2 "She hoped through exchanging information, the two sides can raise living standards for workers, foster safe working environment for workers, and protect workers' rights in accordance with relevant international labor principles while respecting the national laws of both the United States and China," the Agency continued.*3 U. S. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao received her B. A. degree in Economics with straight A's for all her four years at the famous Mount Holyoke College in New England. She obtained her M. B. A. degree from Harvard University in 1979. She also studied at M.I.T., Dartmouth College, and Columbia University. At the time she was nominated by President Bush as the Secretary of Labor, she told her father that she does not intend to be an "Authoritative Official". She hoped that she could contribute to our society and nation.*4 Secretary Chao has received numerous awards for her professional accomplishments and community service. She is the recipient of 21 honorary doctoral degrees from colleges and universities around the world. Secretary Chao is married to the Majority Whip of the United States Senate, Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. "Elaine L. Chao is the nation's 24th Secretary of Labor, representing a new generation of American leadership. Since her confirmation by the United States Senate on January 29, 2001, she has been dedicated to carrying out the Department of Labor's mission of inspiring and protecting the hardworking people of America. She is respected as an effective and articulate champion of the nation's contemporary workforce, acting quickly to focus the Labor Department on the modern realities of workers' lives." *5 "When President George W. Bush nominated Elaine L. Chao, the first Asian-American woman appointed to a President's cabinet in U.S. history, he described her as an individual with “sstrong executive talent, compassion, and commitment to helping people build better lives." According to the U. S. Department of Labor, Secretary Elaine Chao's compassionate nature stems from her own background as an immigrant to this country at the age of eight. Her family's experience transitioning to a new country, supported by one another and the kindness of friends and neighbors, taught her that encouragement is the key to fostering independence, and that Americans are naturally compassionate people. This inspired her to dedicate most of her professional life to ensuring that people have the opportunity to pursue lives of dignity and financial independence. As Director of the Peace Corps, Ms. Elaine Chao was one of the first Americans to personally embrace the people of the former communist bloc into the family of democratic nations, establishing Peace Corps programs in the Baltic nations of Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and the newly independent states of the former Soviet Union. Later, as President and Chief Executive Officer of United Way of America, she restored public trust and confidence after the organization was tarnished by mismanagement and financial abuse, thus preserving the nation's largest institution of private charitable giving. The experience Ms. Elaine Chao gained at the United Way helping communities address their local needs prepared her to mobilize the Department of Labor to promote pathways to economic freedom for individuals and families working to achieve the American Dream. She describes her vision for America's workforce as “oone in which everyone can participate where jobs and opportunities are available for those leaving welfare, job training is accessible for those left behind, disability never bars a qualified person from the workplace, and where parents have an easier time balancing the responsibilities of work and home. "Secretary Chao's previous government career includes serving as the Deputy Secretary at the U.S. Department of Transportation, Chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission, and Deputy Maritime Administrator in the U.S. Department of Transportation. She brings a wealth of business experience to the post, having worked as Vice President of Syndications at BankAmerica Capital Markets Group and a banker with Citicorp. Prior to her nomination as Secretary, she expanded her study of policy as a Distinguished Fellow at The Heritage Foundation, a Washington-based public policy research and educational institute. She was selected as a White House Fellow in 1983," states the Department.*6 "With the excellency of knowledge, humanity, and patriotism inspired by Elaine Chao, Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) has continued its many years effort to community service and spiritual belief. Nevada is honor to have WBTI under her spiritual Chairpersonship and I am especially honor to be a M.I.S. Manager of the Graduate School of Business and Public Administration of WBTI," humble as he is, River Sun chatted excitedly during the celebration dinner party at the Gee Joon Chinese Restaurant of Horseshoe Club. The Moon Festival of Midautumn has been many thousand years celebrated as a day for patriotism by the Chinese people in the Far East and Southeastern Asia. The party was held by WBTI in Las Vegas on September 11, 2003. Following the inspiration of the past many years of the accomplishment of Ms. Elaine Chao's contribution of humane spirit to our society, we have the persistense of Wou Shien's spirit for education here in America. If a coolie and hard woker like him could dedicate to eduction by offering all his income and life to build a school for children in his village, what should not for us to offer our efforts for our community? *7 "The mission of this School [Graduate School of Business and Public Administration (GSBPA) of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI)] will emphasize the humanitarian orientation of public administration and the social responsibility of business management. Through academic entrepreneurship, we may expect the endeavor of this School for the community service based on humane spirit, led by Chairperson Elaine Chao of WBTI," said Dr. Dina Titus, Adjunct Professor of Administrative Strategies in GSBPA.*17 Nina Titus was born May 23, 1950 in Thomasville, Georgia. She graduated from College of William and Mary with A.B.. She received her M. A. and Ph. D. degrees from University of Georgia and Florida State University, respectively. She is a Senator and Minority Floor Leader of Nevada Senate. Dina is also a professor of Political Science in UNLV.*8 --------------------------- References *1. Our economic health, our physical health, and our children's future rely on common sense legislation and accountability in state government By Valerie Weber, Bill Young, and Tiffany ChangFri, 17 Sep 2004 12:02:32 -0700 Hi Dr Lei, It was a pleasure to see you at the Thai dinner on Wednesday this week. Thank you for the invitation to sit at your table and your great hospitality. Find attached the picture of you, Judy and me at the dinner! Hope to see you soon; I am working hard to keep my seat in the Legislature! Warm regards, Valerie E Weber Nevada Assemblywoman Clark County District 5 Originally from California, Valerie moved to Nevada in 1990 after transferring with her former company, United Blood Services (UBS). She served there as the Technical Director for 10 years. Her undergraduate degree in biological science and specialty in the field of transfusion medicine earned her several medical journal authorships.*1 She is a 1998 graduate of the Chamber of Commerce's Leadership Las Vegas program, participated in the Leadership Las Vegas Youth Program, served as a Board member of Habitat for Humanity and just completed a four-year term as a member of the Board of Displaced Homemakers, appointed by Governor Guinn in 2000. Valerie is the owner of Collaborating Solutions, an organizational development (OD) company in Las Vegas, Nevada, creating solid solutions for business improvement. Her greatest strengths are tackling complex problems, determining "root causes" and "blind spots" by offering solutions to improve people and the bottom line. She is accredited in Dr Goleman’s 360-competency assessment instrument in Emotional Intelligence (ECI). An avid student of both Peter Senge of MIT and Daniel Goleman of Harvard University she can provide guidance in the following areas of business: *Assess and coach emotional Intelligence (EQ) in leadership *Evaluate short term and long term market strategies *Provide "organizational needs" assessment for growing, struggling or recently merged companies *Evaluate organizational design, structure and culture *Integrate "systems thinking" throughout the organization *Combine personal mastery and team learning action plans *Recognize and overcome negative cultural barriers *Recommend human resource strategies in talent management and performance One of Valerie's proudest accomplishments was earning her Master's degree in Organizational Management in 2001. Valerie believes strongly that people in any organization long for positive, constructive feedback and coaching on individual performance and continued development for organizational success. Valerie has lived in Las Vegas for almost 14 years and considers this the greatest place on earth to live. "Our growing community continues to face serious challenges that must be met if we are going to have the quality of life that we deserve," points out Assemblywoman Valerie Weber.*2 Valerie has been active in community involvement especially in Las Vegas, Nevada. She attended enthusiastically the Event and Dinner Party for Thai Performing Arts-Appreciation Day 2004 on September 15, 2004. A feature report with her colorful photo on Valerie's perspective and accomplishment has been published by Las Vegas Chinese Daily News (LVCDN) on September 23, 2004 in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was written by a reporter, Maggie Liu, of LVCDN. "I agree with Lt. Governor Lorraine Hunt that 'Freedom, democracy, and Justice have constituted a legacy that we should keep, not because it is a legacy, but because it is right and justice. It has made the United States of America the freest and most prosperous country in history. As U. S. Senator John Ensign and Justice of Supreme Court Bill Maupin emphasized the value of diversity, it's my responsibility and our effors togethr to make Nevada one of the peaceful, happy, and prosperous state of America through the cooperation and development of culture, tourism, and invesment with our Asian countries,'*3 As one of its contribution to Nevadan community service, it is impressive that Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) has continuouly supported Thai Performing Arts-Appreciation Day annually for already eleven years," said Nevada Assemblywoman Valerie Weber at the Event and Dinner Party for Thai Performing Arts-Appreciation Day 2004. It was held by TCAALV and co-sponsered by City of Las Vegas, WBTI, Asian leaders, among others at Charleston Height Arts Center on September 15, 2004 in Las Vegas. "I'm pleased to be the visitors' number at #82,801 of the WBTI website," Assemblywoman Valerie Weber said sincerely. -------------------------------------- References *1. Weber, Velerie. "Post through PAI....." (See our letter to you on 8/25/04 please.)Sunday, September 26, 2004 Copyright @ Las Vegas Review-Journal TRIP OF THE WEEK: There is plenty of fall foliage to see throughout Nevada Nevadans enjoy an extended fall color season starting about now in the high mountains and ending when the last leaves fall in the lower desert in December. If you want to see high-country color, plan fall foliage outings soon, for the best of the mountain color disappears by mid-October. Wherever the high-forested mountains have stands of quaking aspen, the autumn color will be good. Few other trees in Nevada put on as fancy dress for fall as these stately, white-trunked natives. Their leaves take on yellow hues ranging from palest butter to bright persimmon. Autumn breezes scatter the falling leaves like gold pieces carelessly flung. The Spring Mountains west of Las Vegas provide plenty of color during their brief autumn, all less than an hour's drive from town. Stands of aspen in Kyle, Deer Creek and Lee canyons bear swaths of color. Look for the first color among the snow-stunted groves on high rocky slopes. The show ends with the trees protected in the canyons. Drive up into Kyle and Lee canyons to the ends of the highways for the best views. Hikers following trails in the Spring Mountains reap scenic rewards. Other vegetation provides mountain color as well. The kinds of oaks and maples native to Nevada do not take on the brilliant hues of their relations in other parts of the country. They change to more subtle tones of amber and russet. Throughout much of Nevada, the native rabbit brush grows unobtrusively all year. In autumn, it clothes itself in ochre blossoms, creating glorious roadside color. Head north into White Pine and Elko counties for other notable samples of high-mountain color in Nevada. Folks around Ely boast of brilliant displays along the Success Summit Loop and at Great Basin National Park. Residents of Elko say you can't match the color in Lamoille Canyon and elsewhere in the Ruby Mountains. One of the most scenic drives in the Silver State, the Success Summit Loop begins north of Ely off U.S. 93. It follows a beautiful valley at the foot of the Schell Creek Range to a high summit, then drops down to cave Lake State Park and returns to U.S. 93. If you get there at the right time, every canyon blazes with color. The excursion, popular with locals, takes just a couple of hours. Great Basin National Park lies about 190 miles from Las Vegas by way of U.S. 93, U.S. 6 and a short spur through the town of Baker. Take the 12-mile Wheeler Peak Scenic Road for the best of colorful foliage, dramatic mountains and panoramic overviews. Several foot trails accessed from the road provide wider access to fall color views. Inquire at the park office for the best hikes and places to see fall color. Often called "Nevada's Alps," the high, jagged Ruby Mountains shelter some of the most spectacular scenery in the state. Predicting the duration of the fall color season there is chancy, for the heavy snows of winter are never long off. To reach the area, Southern Nevadans drive the length of the state, 430 miles to Elko and 32 miles more through old Lamoille Canyon. A well-kept scenic secret, remote Fish Lake Valley near Boundary Peak in western Esmeralda County offers gorgeous fall color. Vegetation filling canyons in the White Mountains briefly overflows into the valley with seasonal brilliance. Cousins of the aspen growing at lower elevations, cottonwoods and poplars turn various shades of yellow and orange, extending autumnal displays. Ash and willows frequently grow in the same areas. They brighten canyons, lake shores and water courses later in the fall across the state. Long after the aspens lose their leaves and snow dusts the high peaks, the cottonwoods and their neighbors defy oncoming winter with bright raiment. Look for the groves of cottonwoods around the Pahranagat Lakes near Alamo on U.S. 93 to glow brightly against brilliant autumn skies. Still lake waters reflecting their images double the beauty. Follow the Meadow Valley Wash south from Caliente through Rainbow Canyon toward Elgin for late season brilliance. Autumn color breaks up the long trip to Reno on U.S. 95 along the Amargosa River near Beatty, the Walker River near Schurz and in the canyons and valleys along the Truckee River. There is still plenty of gold in Nevada, if you know where to look. Margo Bartlett Pesek's Trip of the Week column appears Sundays. 11111111111111111 8888888888888888888888888888 777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777 ****************************************************
