Dear Fellow Nevadan,
Yesterday it was reported that nearly 2,000 employers and unions have been accepted into the Early Retiree Reinsurance Program created by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The employers accepted into the program will begin receiving reimbursements for employee claims this fall, giving them the ability to use the savings to reduce health care costs and premiums for workers and their families.
This announcement is good news for early retirees in the Silver State and the latest example of how the new health reform law is already working for Nevada. Click here to view a list of Nevada companies that have been accepted into the program so far. In addition to helping businesses provide coverage for early retirees who are not yet eligible for Medicare, this week we also learned that one million Medicare beneficiaries who have fallen into the prescription drug doughnut hole have received their $250 rebate check to help cover the cost of their medication.
Earlier this week, I was pleased to announce that Nevada will receive $83.1 million to protect and support the jobs of teachers, administrators and support professionals through the Education Jobs Fund. I am proud to have led the Senate in passing the Jobs Fund to protect 1,400 education jobs in Nevada and thousands more around the country. Thanks to the timely application submitted by the State of Nevada, and Secretary Duncan�s efforts to distribute these funds quickly, teachers and students can have the peace of mind and support they need to be successful in the classroom.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to join industry leaders, policy experts, investors, public officials, the media, and citizens like you to participate in the National Clean Energy Summit 3.0 next Tuesday, September 7, 2010 in Las Vegas, Nevada. On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I congratulate the Sammarinese people as you celebrate the Feast of San Marino on September 3.
The United States has a special respect for San Marino as one of the world~{!/~}s oldest republics. The Republic of San Marino has flourished politically and economically since its founding through a strong tradition of independence and self-governance. From the time that the Captains Regent of San Marino conferred honorary citizenship on President Abraham Lincoln as a show of solidarity during our Civil War, our relationship has been a source of strength and encouragement for both our countries.
I wish all the people of San Marino a happy holiday and a successful year to come as the friendship between our nations continues to grow.

Last night President Obama marked the end of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
As the President said, the struggle for peace is not over, but the progress we've made is undeniable.
This moment also represents a promise kept. As a candidate, President Obama laid out a vision for this country -- and bringing our troops home from Iraq was a defining part of that vision. It was one of the reasons that all of us knocked on doors, made phone calls, and voted.
Keeping that promise is important, not only for our brave women and men in uniform, but also for their loved ones, and for all Americans who have hoped and prayed for a resolution to this war.
