Shocking statistics on Asian American employment

Dear fellow Asian Americans,

Martin Luther King, Jr. said "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice
everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied
in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all
indirectly."

How true that is. Our nation's prosperity and strength is undermined
when any of her people is held back or obstructed from achieving their
full potential.

Asian Americans (AsAms) comprise one of the fastest growing ethnic
groups in America, and represent over 5% of the US population. Yet in
2008, before President Obama took office, only 8 - a measly 0.93%
of the 864 US federal judges - were Asian American (AsAm)! And
not a single judge on the appellate (circuit) court is AsAm. All
of the 8 Asian American judges served at the lowest federal
district court level.

Could such a pathetic under-representation reflect a lack of qualified
AsAm candidates to be appointed for federal judgeships? Heck NO! Dept
of Labor statistics shows AsAms have an above-average representation in
the legal profession, at over 5.5%. Many distinguished AsAm legal
scholars serve as law professors and even deans at renowned law schools.
If AsAm were equitably represented in the federal judiciary,
we~{!/~}d have around 45 federal judges instead of only 8!

It was not until 2006, when 80-20 Initiative took on the challenge to
reverse the gross underrepresentation of AsAms in the federal courts and
in upper management of the American workplace, that the tide finally
began to turn.

In 2008, 80-20 secured the landmark written commitment (see
http://www.80-20initiative.net/news/preselect2008_obama.jpg ) from
then-Presidential candidate Obama to remedy the inequity faced by
AsAms. Since President Obama took office, he has taken concrete steps to
nominate more AsAm judges. If all of President Obama~{!/~}s AsAm nominees
were confirmed by the Senate, we~{!/~}d have nearly doubled the number of
AsAm judges to 15, with 2 at the appellate level. Judge Denny Chin of
New York became the first Chinese American appellate court judge earlier
this year. Viet-Am and Korean Am are among the judges and nominees.

The inequity AsAms face is not limited to the federal
judiciary. Dept of Labor statistics also confirm that compared
to national average, we have only 25% to 45% chance of rising to
management ranks in private industry and academia!! Yes, you
read the horrendous numbers correctly! Did you ever think that the glass
ceiling was THAT low and that the odds against us were THAT awful?

We have a LONG ways to go before equal opportunity and
justice is enjoyed by AsAm.

Fed up? Outraged? Then do your part by becoming a dues-
paying member of 80-20 Initiative TODAY. And get your fellow
AsAm to do the same. Together, we can fight more effectively

80-20 dues paying members are a special breed who know it takes
more than lip service and moral support to get the tough job done.

about 2,000 AsAm out of 700,000 actually pay their dues that are
essential to fund the challenging landmark progress that 80-20 is
achieving on behalf of AsAms. Remember to feed your
workhorse so it can keep working for you. Pay your dues NOW!

Read | Hebrews 5:12-14

Our Father in heaven desires that we grow spiritually from infancy to maturity. He puts us in a school of faith, so to speak, teaching us to follow Him. Yesterday, we talked about the discipline of listening to God. Today, let~{!/~}s look at four more practices necessary for living a life in Christ.

First, the Lord desires that we obey Him. Some of His teachings are easy to follow, while others are difficult. Choosing our own way might feel good at first, but the end result is always regret. On the other hand, every act of obedience builds faith.

Second, the Lord teaches us to depend upon Him. In fact, He sometimes calls us to action in areas that seem humanly impossible. For instance, forgiving an atrocious act feels beyond our ability. But when we cannot achieve what He requires, we rely upon His strength to enable us.

Third, our heavenly Father wants us to wait upon Him. We want everything to happen according to our preferences and timetable, but manipulating circumstances only makes a mess. God~{!/~}s way is best, and He desires for us to trust and be patient.

Fourth, Scripture teaches us to confess failures, repent, and learn from them. God doesn~{!/~}t expect perfection, but He does want to see a healthy response to shortcomings.

The heavenly Father wants His children to have abundant, meaningful lives. For this reason, He sent His Holy Spirit to indwell, equip, and empower believers so they can reach their God-given potential. We can choose to cooperate with this plan or to live independently of His best. (www.Intouch.org)

Sharing 101

Philippians 2:1-11

As our world is getting smaller, our minds seem to be following suit. Our level of selfishness is increasing by the day. Suddenly, nobody wants you to invade his or her "space." Sharing may be the major subject in a kindergarten class, but somewhere on the way to adulthood the lessons get erased.

How easy it is to forget that thinking first of the other person did not originate with Dale Carnegie. It comes straight from the Lord our God, who led Paul to write: "Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others" (Phil. 2:3-4).

If you think most people follow that counsel, see what happens the next time you're driving into the mall and you slip into a parking spot, not realizing someone else was waiting to occupy it. We're talking borderline homicide.

This selfish attitude is also alive and well on airplanes. I remember one in particular: I was sitting on a 727 about halfway back in the coach section (three-plus-three configuration) when a family of three came aboard. Apparently they had purchased their tickets late and were unable to secure reserved seating in the same row. The airline attendant assured them that there were several empty seats . . . surely someone would be willing to swap.

Just in front of me were two empty seats, middle and window . . . and on the other side, same row, the middle and aisle seats were open. The family---all of them friendly and courteous---asked the gentleman on the aisle if he would be willing to move from the right side aisle seat to the left side aisle seat. That's all . . . just stand up, take two steps to the left, then sit back down. Just swap seat 17D for seat 17C.

Do you think he'd do it? No way. He wasn't even courteous enough to answer verbally. Just stared straight ahead as he shook his head firmly.

Just remember this the next time someone cuts in front of you, the next time you are patiently (or impatiently?) waiting your turn in the line or at the light and someone charges ahead of you.

Make it an opportunity to practice Sharing 101. "In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets" (Matt. 7:12).

Watch for an opportunity to share "your" space.
