Jeremy Lin's Brand Thriving With Knicks New Coach

3/25/2012 @ 10:00AM |18,076 views

There was a lot of concern about brand Linsanity when the New York Knicks fired head coach Mike D’Antoni on March 14. But the value of Lin’s brand, which I estimated to be worth $14 million in mid-February, keeps growing as the guard has continued to play well under new coach Mike Woodson and the Knicks appear likely to make the NBA playoffs.

NEW YORK, NY - MARCH 14: (R) Mike Woodson the interim head coach of the New York Knicks talks with (L) Jeremy Lin #17 of the New York Knicks during the game against the Portland Trailblazers at Madison Square Garden on March 14, 2012 in New York City. (Image credit: Getty Images via @daylife)

Not only has Lin added value to JP Morgan’s $300 million sponsorship of Madison Square Garden, but Lin’s number 17 jersey continues to be the league’s top seller. As my colleague Chris Smith recently wrote, according to an ESPN poll Lin is more popular in New York than Derek Jeter.

Moreover, Lin continues to boost sponsorship revenue. Taiwan’s Acer Inc. and the New York Knicks announced a marketing partnership in mid-March that will allow the PC vendor’s logo to be featured courtside at the Knicks’ home court for the remainder of the 2011-12 NBA season. And last week Lin inked a marketing deal for several international markets with Volvo, while Coca-Cola said it plans to use Lin’s popularity to connect with Chinese consumers.

The lesson with Lin is that the Harvard graduate doesn’t have to be an All-Star to have a powerful brand. He doesn’t even have to be the best guard on the Knicks. Given the international popularity of NBA, with his attitude, charisma and background, he just needs to be a good player on a playoff-caliber team.

Knicks bounce back with another rout of Pistons

By BRIAN MAHONEY | The Associated Press ¨C Sat, Mar 24, 2012 11:34 PM EDT

NEW YORK (AP) The New York Knicks entered their locker room Saturday to find pictures of the Larry O'Brien trophy hanging above their lockers.

Before the Knicks can entertain any thoughts of competing for an NBA championship, they needed to know Amare Stoudemire's back was OK.

''There's nothing to be worried about,'' Stoudemire said.

There never was this season against the Detroit Pistons.

Tyson Chandler had 15 points and tied a season high with 17 rebounds, and the Knicks rebounded from their first loss under Mike Woodson by routing the Pistons for the third time this season, 101-79.

Stoudemire scored 17 points for the Knicks before sitting out the fourth quarter after his back stiffened up. Any hopes the Knicks had of advancing in last season's playoffs were wrecked when he injured his back in Game 2 of an eventual first-round sweep by the Boston Celtics, and with Stoudemire finally playing well recently after a subpar 2 1/2 months, New York can't afford him to go out now - especially with a potentially pivotal game against Milwaukee coming Monday.

''I saw him after the game and he said everything was cool,'' Carmelo Anthony said. ''He just (said) it tightened up on him and he didn't want to take no chances.''

The Knicks improved to 6-1 since Mike D'Antoni resigned heading into Monday's game against the Bucks, whom they lead by 1 1/2 games for eighth place in the Eastern Conference. The Knicks lost 96-79 on Friday night in Toronto, which apparently became the inspiration for the new decorations in their recently renovated locker room that went up sometime during the game.

''We felt like we let one go and we didn't come out with the energy that we needed to in that game,'' Chandler said. ''We wanted to come out tonight with a purpose and get back on the right track.''

Anthony finally got his shot to fall in the third quarter and finished with 15 points, while Jeremy Lin had 13. The bench put it away early in the fourth, allowing some banged-up Knicks to get some extra rest. Lin sat down with a sore left knee but could have returned, and he also said afterward he expected to be OK.

Dear Fellow Nevadan

Two years ago, President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law. It was the greatest single step in generations toward ensuring access to affordable, quality health care for every American – regardless of where they live or how much money they make.

Millions of Americans have already felt the benefits of this law. Seniors are saving money on their prescriptions and checkups. Insurance companies can no longer set arbitrary lifetime caps on benefits, putting millions of Americans one car accident or heart attack away from bankruptcy. Children can no longer be denied insurance because they have a preexisting condition, a protection that will soon extend to all Americans. And in two shorts years, virtually every American will have access to health insurance they can afford and the vital care they need. No longer will millions of Americans live in fear of losing their insurance because they lose their job. And no longer will tens of millions more rely on emergency room care – or go without care entirely – because they have no insurance at all.

Unfortunately, many of my colleagues on the other side of the aisle continue to target the rights and benefits guaranteed under this law. If they have their way, insurance companies will once again be allowed to deny care to a sick child because he or she has asthma or diabetes. In Nevada, thousands of children with preexisting conditions would once again be at the whim of insurance companies that care more about making a profit than about making people healthier.

If opponents of health insurance reform have their way, young adults just out of college will be kicked off their parents’ insurance plans. Almost 23,000 young adults in Nevada could be at risk of not having health care coverage.

If opponents of health insurance reform have their way, seniors will pay more for prescriptions and checkups. More than 230,000 Nevada seniors would once again be forced to pay for wellness visits, cancer screenings and other preventive services. And tens of thousands of seniors, who saved $12 million on prescription drugs last year, will once again be forced to choose between buying food and buying medicine.

This law makes certain that the richest nation in the world never again turns its back on the despair, helplessness and suffering of the least among us. And it guarantees that no insurance company will ever again put a price tag on a human life.

For more information on the benefits of health insurance reform in Nevada, please click here or visit my Responsible Health Care Reform webpage. Friend --

I'm officially back on the campaign trail. And it feels great to be out there.

Because really, what being on the campaign trail means to me is simple: talking to you.

What supporters across the country are thinking about right now is what's going to be on our minds every day between now and Election Day. And for four years after that.

So I'd like to ask you one question right now: Of all the issues important to you, what's the bottom-line reason you're with us in this fight?

You can answer that question here.

We've all got a dog in this fight.

For some folks, it's making sure we're continuing to create millions of good jobs here at home, and building an economy that's made to last -- not for the next election cycle or the next couple years, but for the long run. Or the idea that we ought to be protecting and strengthening Social Security and Medicare for future generations of Americans.

We want to take each of those reasons, and drill them into this thing we're building together.

And right now, I'm asking for your help. Let us know what's on your mind, and help shape the conversation in the months to come:

http://my.barackobama.com/Your-Bottom-Line-Issue

I'll see you out there.

Dear Friend:

Just a quick note (appropriately short given that the subject is Twitter). Our johnkerry.com community has been ahead of the technological curve in a lot of ways; 3 million people strong, we've banded together online to do everything from raising money to help tsunami victims and fight cancer, to electing veterans and fighting disgusting smears against Barack Obama in 2008. Technology has continued to be the tip of the spear in so many ways when it comes to organizing -- and now a lot of that is happening in real time on Twitter. So, please sign up to follow me on Twitter on @JohnKerry.

It's a chance to have honest and open-ended conversations on everything from politics to the Senate and, yes, occasionally New England sports.

And hey, it's a rare chance to see a United States Senator struggle to express those thoughts in 140 characters or less!

So, give it a shot, feel free to send a tweet to @JohnKerry or just weigh in on whatever is on your mind. And you can also follow members of my team there on Twitter as well, so let's make it a Kerry family enterprise!

Thanks.
JK

Friend --

At this point you probably know about Dinner with Barack and how cool it is, so I will spare you.

However, since the campaign is picking the third guest in just a few hours, and, assuming it won't be me, I will say one thing:

If you win, fantastic. To be honest, what I really care about is the campaign's budget -- thanks to you and everyone who pitches in, we're able to open new field offices, hire more organizers across the country, and in places like Virginia, Colorado, and Arizona, lay the groundwork for the biggest grassroots campaign these states have ever seen.

That's why you should donate $3 or whatever you can today to be automatically entered to have dinner with President Obama:

I see this happen a lot:

Someone in a crowd yells at my husband, "We love you, Barack."

That's when he interrupts himself, smiles really big, and says, "I love you back." And he does.

That's why Barack's dinners with supporters mean so much to him -- because they give him a chance to show it and to say thanks.

I can say from experience you won't want to miss out on the next dinner. I hope you'll consider donating $3 -- or whatever you can to support the campaign -- and be automatically entered today:

Secretary's Remarks: Message for World Heritage Convention

Message for World Heritage Convention

Press Statement

Hillary Rodham Clinton
Secretary of State

Washington, DC

March 16, 2012

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

140 years ago, the United States established Yellowstone as our first national park. A century later, as a charter member of UNESCO, we proposed the World Heritage Convention, initiating a global movement to protect the earth’s irreplaceable resources and treasures.
Since then, the World Heritage Convention has been the most widely accepted international conservation treaty in history. In the United States alone, over twenty landmarks have been added to the World Heritage List, inspiring people from across the globe.

I have had the honor of visiting many of these sights and the opportunity to meet those who have dedicated their lives to this important preservation. As we celebrate this 40th anniversary, let us pay tribute to those who have worked to preserve and protect sites in the United States and around the world. And let us renew our commitment to the next 40 years so that future generations have an opportunity to experience the places that reflect our unique heritage, and tell the story of the ties we all share.

Thank you.

Tony,

The Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United opened the floodgates to unlimited amounts of corporate money in politics. The decision has taken its toll -- it was reported this week that 91% of the advertising in the Alabama and Mississippi presidential primaries has come from third party entities.

That might work for other parts of the country, but it doesn’t have to be how Nevada picks its next U.S. Senator.

It is in this spirit of fairness that I have proposed the Free Nevada Pact. This Pact will ensure that no millionaire, billionaire, shadowy corporation or narrow special interest group on either side of the aisle can parachute in and hijack this race. It will free our state from an onslaught of unaccountable attacks and leave Nevada voters free to make up their own minds in this election.

I've signed the Pact, and sent the proposal to my opponent (see below). But I want to go further -- I want to show the entire country that my supporters stand with me.

So I'm asking for your help. Add your voice today, and tell third party spenders on both sides of the aisle that the Nevada Senate election won’t be bought and sold.

Hard working people built the state of Nevada, making it a place where ordinary folks can turn hard work into opportunity. These are the people who should be free to decide who represents them in the Senate -- not secretive millionaires and corporations who have unlimited cash and no one to answer to. Nevadans deserve better than that.

I know you have the same hope for this election as I do -- that we can have a real, substantive debate on the issues rather than a super-charged smear campaign financed by outside groups on both sides. So stand with me now, and tell all those groups waiting in the wings -- thanks, but no thanks.

Click here and show your support for the Free Nevada Pact today.

Thanks for everything you do.

Shelley

U.S. Rep. Shelley Berkley on Monday stood beside Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman and a gaming executive to promote a House bill to let more international tourists visit the United States without visas, which could boost Southern Nevada's economy and create jobs.

Six months ago, U.S. Rep. Joe Heck was flanked by the same two leaders as he used the backdrop of the "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign to pitch his own legislation to speed U.S. visa processing to draw more free-spending international tourists.

Berkley, a Democrat, signed on to Republican Heck's bill. She and Heck also are among three dozen co-sponsors of the separate visa waiver bill she touted on Monday.

"Anything we can do to get people back to work is important," Berkley said, noting visitors fuel Nevada's economy. "Tourism is our No. 1 industry, and we need to expand our tourism base."

While Nevada Democrats and Republicans are at odds on a host of issues, voters are seeing an election-year bounty of dueling legislation written or backed by candidates seeking support at the ballot box. The bills are largely aimed at energizing the recovering economy, dealing with the housing crisis or creating jobs as the state still suffers the nation's highest unemployment rate at 12.7 percent.

Secretary's Remarks: Remarks at the United Nations Security Council

Remarks at the United Nations Security Council

Remarks

Hillary Rodham Clinton
Secretary of State

United Nations

New York City, DC

March 12, 2012

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you very much Foreign Secretary Hague for calling us together. Secretary General, thank you very much for your leadership.

Today, we gather to discuss the wave of change that has swept the Middle East and North Africa. While each country’s experience has been unique, all of these democratic movements have sprung from a common desire for rights, freedom, economic hope, and human dignity. These universal aspirations are enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and in the UN Charter, and they are fundamental to my country’s identity and history and to those of many countries. These principles – and the people who struggle to realize them in their own societies – deserve and demand our collective support. We are inspired by the courage of the people of the region, as they have shown their determination to move forward, and we believe that their efforts should be supported.

Now I approach these conversations with a healthy dose of humility, because we know that these revolutions are not ours. They are not by us, for us, or against us. But we also know that, as an international community, we do have the resources and capabilities to support those who seek peaceful, meaningful, democratic change. We must also have the will.

Now of course, change is unfolding in different ways in different places, and in each unique case, our tools have to be matched with the circumstances. Here at the UN Security Council, three cases in particular demand our attention today.

Let me start with Libya and the encouraging vote this morning to renew and update the UN Support Mission in Libya, UNSMIL. Last year, this council – backed by the Arab League and countries around the world – acted to support the Libyan people at the hour of their greatest need. Today’s vote reflects our continued commitment to Libya and its transitional government, which has made tremendous strides. And it also reflects the recognition that our work is not yet done.

Friend --

Across the country this election is heating up. The organization we're putting together in our state right now will make a big difference this November.

Whether you're just starting to get involved in this organization or you've been pounding the pavement to talk to voters for months, now is the perfect time to meet up with other supporters and help celebrate the opening of our brand-new office for Northwest Las Vegas and Summerlin.

Come out and help build this office from the start:

What: OFA Northwest Las Vegas and Summerlin office opening party

Where: OFA Northwest Las Vegas office
7469 W. Lake Mead, Ste. 170
Las Vegas, NV 89128

When: Wednesday, March 14th
6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

We won't work you too hard this Wednesday -- there's plenty of hard work to do in the months ahead. We'll relax with some food and drinks, and chat about the issues that matter most here in Nevada, like affordable health care and support for homeowners who are struggling to keep their homes.

This new office in Northwest Las Vegas will be your local hub for building our base of volunteers, connecting with undecided voters, and making sure we secure the 270 electoral votes we need for a win on November 6th. That work won't just re-elect the President -- it'll have a real impact for Democrats in races across the state. But it won't happen unless we get our organizing off the ground now.

It's time to prepare for the tough fight ahead -- so don't miss the office opening for Northwest Las Vegas and Summerlin this Wednesday:

Hope you'll be there,

Luke
