It’s been a long time since many middle class Americans could take a deep breath and relax. Because for too many, living month-to-month has become a familiar routine.

Good morning, everyone. I am delighted to send greetings to you as you discuss new ways to lead this dynamic industry through these exciting and challenging times.
The United States and Japan enjoy a strong partnership based on a history of shared experiences, common values and ties of family and friends. This partnership is as strong as ever today. We’ve worked closely with you during the past year to help rebuild after the tragic events of last March. Japan has helped so many people around the world during their own crises and catastrophes and I want to express my appreciation to all of you for meeting in Japan and spreading the message that Japan is indeed open for business, including tourism.

More than one billion people will travel around the world this year. They will help our economies grow and support new areas of cooperation. At the State Department, we’re working to support tourism through student exchanges, study abroad opportunities and our visa waiver program. Anthony leads Knicks in last visit to New Jersey

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) Carmelo Anthony saw the Knicks jerseys in the stands, heard the cheers, and felt right at home.

''It was a great Knicks atmosphere out there tonight,'' he said.

It always was whenever the Knicks played across the Hudson River.

Anthony scored 21 of his 33 points in the first quarter, and the Knicks beat the Nets 104-95 on Wednesday night in their last trip to New Jersey.

Continuing his torrid stretch without Amare Stoudemire and Jeremy Lin, Anthony hit his first six shots in front of the usual pro-New York crowd that will become an all-New York crowd next season, when the Nets move to Brooklyn.

The Nets once hoped to have Anthony in the lineup when they got there and he is showing why lately, surpassing 30 points for the third straight game and the sixth time in nine games this month. He shot 11 of 21, going 5 of 7 on 3-pointers, and finished slightly ahead of the NBA-best 32.1 points he was averaging in April.

''He's playing unbelievable right now,'' center Tyson Chandler said. ''He's playing, if not the best, definitely in the tops right now, as far as individual basketball.''

Chandler added 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Knicks, who won for the 15th time in 20 games under interim coach Mike Woodson and remained in seventh place in the Eastern Conference.

Gerald Wallace scored 21 points in his return to the starting lineup after missing four games with a strained left hamstring for the Nets, who were still without All-Star guard Deron Williams because of a sore right calf.

Mike Bibby had eight points and eight assists for the Knicks in place of Baron Davis, who sat out with a stomach virus.

Anthony followed LeBron James' spectacular finish here Monday, when he scored Miami's final 17 points in the last five minutes, with a start that was nearly as good.

The All-Star forward made his first six shots, including three 3-pointers, the crowd cheering louder with each as he nodded his head and stuck out his tongue in enjoyment of how easily it was coming. The Knicks' lead reached 21 on his three-point play with 2:02 remaining in the period, and the Nets needed the last basket of the quarter to make it 38-22 and avoid being outscored by Anthony.

It was 64-47 at halftime, but Anthony didn't get the same help he had Tuesday against Boston, when JR Smith and Novak combined for 15 of the Knicks' 19 3-pointers, and the offense stalled in the third quarter.

The Nets outscored the Knicks 24-14 in the period, limited New York to just 4-of-17 shooting, and got as close as five before heading to the fourth down 78-71.

Nets coach Avery Johnson thought the Nets did a much better job against Anthony after his explosive start.

''He was phenomenal in the first quarter. I think he hit two or three shots from half court,'' Johnson said. ''He got them off to a great start but when Anthony went out the game I thought our second unit, some of our subs did a really good job against their bench and then we got back into the game. We did a good job of guarding Anthony in the second half.''

Smith and Novak finally got going in the fourth, combining for 15 of New York's first 16 points as the Knicks regained control before the crowd chanted ''Let's go Knicks! Let's go Knicks!''

The fans, many wearing Knicks jerseys, later saluted Anthony with ''MVP! and ''Melo!'' chants.

''It felt like a home game for us,'' Anthony said. ''Most of the crowd was our fans, here in New Jersey, so it didn't really feel like a road game for us.''

The Nets are used to it, and Wallace, playing in his first Nets-Knicks game, said he had similar experiences in the NBA.

''You must (have) forgot I was (in) Charlotte for like seven years. The first three years it felt like we were somewhere,'' he said. ''Every team we played it felt like we were in their city. That's not a big thing. I'm kind of used to it.

''They're a playoff team, we're not. So obviously they're going to have more fans and their fans are going to be more energetic than our fans.''

It was the usual Knicks-Nets game in New Jersey, where the scoreboard listed the Nets as the home team but there was no reason to believe it. It's a short trip from New York across the Hudson River, and the Knicks fans' have been all too happy to take it, one of the reasons the rivalry has always been in the Knicks' favor.

The Nets had some success through the years, including sweeping the Knicks out of the 2004 playoffs, and dominated their cross-river rivals for a few years when Jason Kidd made the Nets one of the top teams in the East.

But the Knicks have owned the off-the-court battle, and scored the most recent and perhaps significant victory in February 2010, when Denver took their package instead of the Nets' when they finally decided to move Anthony. Though it was long believed his preference was the Knicks, the Nets hoped he would be convinced to accept a trade to New Jersey if the Nuggets didn't like what the Knicks were offering, knowing he needed to sign a new contract last season before a new collective bargaining agreement that was going to severely limit salaries.

The Nets rebounded from the disappointment by acquiring Williams the next day, but he insists he will test free agency this summer. His decision could determine whether the Nets arrive in Brooklyn with hopes of contending anytime soon.

Nets officials hope the move to the Barclays Center, scheduled to open in September, and its easy accessibility via a number of subway lines will help them establish a fan base that they never consistently count on in the Meadowlands or during their two years at the Prudential Center.

They will play their final game in New Jersey on Monday against Philadelphia.

Smith finished with 15 points for the Knicks. Sundiata Gaines, starting for Williams, finished with 18.

Notes: Stoudemire will work out Thursday with the expectation that he will return from a bulging disk in his back Friday against Cleveland. ... Knicks reserve forward Jared Jeffries was a late scratch with a sore right knee. ... The Nets are 1-7 without Williams this season.

Jeremy Lin's story is a great lesson for kids everywhere because it debunks and defangs so many of the prejudices and stereotypes that unfairly hold children back. He's dispelled the idea that Asian-American guards somehow couldn't hack it in the NBA — and that being a world-class athlete on the court is somehow at odds with being an excellent student off the court.

Contrary to what you might read, Jeremy, 23, is no overnight sensation. In fact, he achieved success the old-fashioned way: he earned it. He worked hard and stayed humble. He lives the right way; he plays the right way.

It's great to see good values rewarded in professional sports because that's not always the case. Often it's the bling, the glam, the individual that gets celebrated — not the team and working together to advance a goal bigger than oneself. Jeremy cares only about one thing — winning. And I don't care whether you are an Asian-American kid, white, black or Hispanic, Jeremy's story tells you that if you show grit, discipline and integrity, you too can get an opportunity to overcome the odds.

Thank you very much, and it¡¯s a great pleasure to be here at this first high-level conference of the Open Government Partnership. And I want to commend and thank Brazil, in particular President Rousseff, for the leadership that they have given to this initiative.

As co-chair of the Open Government Partnership for the past year, Brazil and the United States have had a front-row seat to see how swiftly and enthusiastically the community of nations has come together. Fifty-five countries now belong, 47 of which joined in the past eight months alone. A quarter of the world¡¯s people now live in OGP countries, each of which has outlined concrete, credible steps that it will take to open the work of government so citizens are empowered, problems are solved, democracy is strengthened.

I particularly want to thank the Brazilian team. Minister Hage, thank you for your leadership, along with Under Secretary Maria Otero of the State Department. The two of you have worked very hard leading this process, and we are grateful. I want to thank my colleague and friend, the foreign minister of Brazil, and also welcome the other foreign ministers who are representing their country. Thank you very much. And it is, for me, a great pleasure to be here in Brasilia with leaders from government and business who are committed to strengthening the ties between our two countries.

And I am so pleased that I could be here only one week after some of you were in Washington at the event that was held there for businesses and the very successful visit of President Dilma Rousseff to Washington with President Obama. I see some faces that I saw in the crowd at the American Chamber of Commerce when I addressed you just a week ago, which is no surprise to me, because this is such a critical partnership in so many dimensions. And the economic dimension is growing increasingly important, not only to the two countries that are represented here, but indeed to the region and the world.

As many of you know, last year, trade between Brazil and the United States reached nearly $75 billion, much of that in sectors that are driving innovation and creating jobs in both our countries. And Brazilian investment in the United States has grown considerably in recent years, now standing at 15.5 billion, making it one of the largest sources of investment from Latin America.

So this partnership is already benefitting both countries, and I thank the National Confederation of Industry and our co-hosts from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for working to strengthen economic ties. But I’m here because I think we can do so much more. I believe that the opportunities and potential for greater investment, trade, growth, and jobs is only now being tapped.

I was delighted this morning to meet with Gracas Foster, the head of Petrobras, to talk about the exciting future that lies ahead of Brazil because of the extraordinary reserves on your coastline. And this opportunity carries with it a lot of responsibility, which she is shouldering. Of course, for me, it’s exciting to be in a country where the head of your government and the head of your oil company are both led by such visionary, hard-working leaders who happen to be women. That’s a good – another good way in which Brazil is leading.

It was 96 years ago today – this very day – that the U.S. Chamber opened its doors in Brazil. American companies like General Electric were just beginning to explore markets beyond America’s border. And those industrial pioneers knew that doing business in ...

The New York Knicks are coming off a critical victory over their chief pursuer in their battle to make the playoffs. A matchup with the woeful Washington Wizards, however, also could turn out to be a crucial contest.

The Knicks seek their fourth win in five games when they host the Wizards on Friday night, just before a pair of first-place teams visit Madison Square Garden.

New York (30-28) won 111-107 at Milwaukee on Wednesday, moving two games ahead of the Bucks for eighth place in the Eastern Conference with eight games left for both teams. J.R. Smith's 3-pointer with 1:04 left gave the Knicks the lead, and Carmelo Anthony had 32 points and 10 rebounds.

Tyson Chandler added 19 points and 11 boards for New York, which also is one game behind Philadelphia for the seventh spot.

"This is a game we had to have," coach Mike Woodson said.

It's possible Woodson sees Friday's meeting with Washington in similar terms. A home loss to the woeful Wizards (14-44) would leave the Knicks trying to get back on track Sunday against Miami or Tuesday versus Boston, which has won four in a row and 11 of 14.

The Knicks rebounded Wednesday from a defeat at Chicago the previous night to improve to 12-4 under Woodson. They'll now try to avoid a letdown against the Wizards, whom they've beaten eight straight times and twice this season.

New York has won seven in a row in the series at Madison Square Garden, averaging 114.7 points.
