Secretary's Remarks: Pardons in Malawi
Sun, 30 May 2010 14:07:48 -0500

Pardons in Malawi

Hillary Rodham Clinton
Secretary of State
Washington, DC

May 30, 2010

I join President Obama in applauding President Bingu wa Mutharika for his wise and courageous decision to pardon Tiwonge Chimbalanga and Steven Monjeza. He has provided an example for nations across Africa and the world as they debate laws that criminalize sexual orientation.

Human rights belong to all, and must be respected by all. Sexual orientation and gender identity should under no circumstances be the basis for criminal penalties, in particular executions, arrests or detention.

This is a good day for Malawi, for Africa, and for people of conscience everywhere.

July 30, 2010
Congresswoman Shelley Berkley - Representing Nevada's 1st Congressional District

Dear Tony,

I am writing to update you on some legislation I supported this week that funds Military Construction and Veterans Affairs programs. Linked is a summary of the 2011 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations, which outlines programs and projects of critical importance to America's veterans and members of the military and their families. The funding includes veterans benefits and healthcare, and military family housing, barracks, and mission critical facilities.

Within the 2011 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Act, I worked to secure $8.8 million to construct a Nevada Army National Guard Civil Support Team Ready Building. The Nevada National Guard Civil Support Team is designed to provide immediate response in the case of a chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear attack.

I hope you find this update informative and as always, If you have any questions or concerns about this or any other matter, please do not hesitate to contact me or Ms. Jessi Hotchkiss in my Las Vegas office at the address and phone number above.

Sincerely,

Congresswoman Shelley Berkley

Senator Harry Reid Putting Nevada First

Dear Fellow Nevadan,

This year the Senate has been focused on jobs and the economy. And this week, the Senate took several steps forward to help Nevadas long term unemployed and the state budget crisis.

Today, the Senate passed legislation that will protect the jobs of teachers in Nevada and provide funding for Medicaid recipients. The Education Jobs fund is projected to bring $83 million to Nevada schools to keep teachers working, and $79 million in Medicaid funds to ensure that our state's 160,000 Medicaid recipients have access to quality, affordable care. Although the FMAP money is directed to Medicaid, this funding will free up money the state otherwise would have had to spend, reducing the need for further budget cuts and layoffs in other areas. Any legislation thats good for the country and saving jobs is good for Nevada. To hear my remarks after the passage of this important legislation, please click here.

Yesterday, I joined my colleague from Michigan, Senator Debbie Stabenow, in introducing the Americans Want to Work Act. This bill would help long-term unemployed Nevadans by providing 20 additional weeks of unemployment benefits, extending the HIRE Act payroll relief tax through next year, and doubling the per employee tax credit for businesses that retain long-term unemployed workers for at least one year. The measures in this bill will strengthen and extend programs that help unemployed Nevadans and provide incentives for businesses to hire them. Earlier this week, the Treasury Department announced that nearly 70,000 Nevadans have been hired this year because of the HIRE Act, which passed in March of this year. Click here for more information on the HIRE Act.

The Senate also passed S. 3307 today, the Healthy and Hunger-Free Kids Act. ... local governments dont have to absorb the increased cost of school meals. In Nevada, nearly 100,000 children dont know where they will get their next meal, and nearly 200,000 Nevada children depend on free or reduced lunch programs. At a time when many families are struggling to get by, this bill ensures children get something healthy to eat.

And today, the Senate confirmed Elena Kagan as the next Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. This is the first time that the U.S. Supreme Court will have three women justices serving at the same time. I was proud to cast my vote in favor of Elena Kagan today. Click here to read my remarks on the Senate floor.

The Senate will keep its focus on strengthening our economy, creating jobs, and supporting middle-class families throughout the rest of the year. I assure you, I will keep fighting until every worker in Nevada and across America who wants a job has one. As always, thank you for reading this update. Please visit my website, reid.senate.gov, for more information on my work in the Senate.

Sincerely,

HARRY REID
U.S. Senator for Nevada

Help NSDP Chairman Sam Lieberman Celebrate 30 Years in Nevada!

From: Sam Lieberman [osrsig@aol.com]Add to Contacts
To: Tony Lei [tojulei@yahoo.com]

Dear Friend,

Today marks a significant day in my personal history. Thirty years ago I first moved to Nevada. Since then, my personal, political, and community experiences have changed my life. I can only hope to have helped shape the progress of the state I proudly call my home.

In those thirty years, I have fought for higher education priorities at Board of Regents meetings in Elko, Ely, Reno, and Las Vegas. I have campaigned across the entire state for and with Senator Harry Reid, Congresswoman Shelley Berkley, Congresswoman Dina Titus, Rory Reid, our state constitutional officers, and our Democratic legislators and legislative candidates. I have worked side-by-side with many of you over the years on campaigns and activities, building up the Democratic Party in all 17 counties.

As we prepare for victory this November, help us build the foundation for what the Democratic Party in Nevada will accomplish now and in the next 30 years. In the past 30 years, you've probably heard me ask often for your "time, talent, and treasure" to elect our Democratic candidates and promote the values and ideals of the Democratic Party. And once more, I am asking. PLEASE CONTRIBUTE $30 today to fund our statewide get-out-the-vote efforts this fall. Your contribution will help fund the voter contact and education efforts that will lead to victories for our Democratic candidates this November.

CLICK HERE TO DONATE $30 TODAY

For 30 years, I have been proud to call Nevada home. Please help me celebrate this anniversary with your contribution of $30. Thank you for your continued support!

Sincerely,

(Autograph)
Sam Lieberman
Chair, Nevada State Democratic Party

NEVADA TO RECEIVE $83.1 MILLION FOR K-12 SCHOOLS!
By Office of the Govrnor(NV), Daniel Burns, Valerie , and Jennifer Kung

FOR THE CURRENT SCHOOL YEAR

Carson City - Governor Jim Gibbons received official notification today that Nevada will receive $83.1 million in one-time federal funding for the 2010-2011 school year. The funding is part of the gEdujobsh bill passed by Congress and signed into law on August 10, 2010. Application documents were received by the Governorfs Office on Friday, August 13, and Nevada applied for funding on Monday, August 16. Nevada was one of the first five states to apply for the funding.

gI will move quickly to distribute this money to our schools and our children. The school year is underway and the jobs created by these funds are needed now. Our students need this support now,h Governor Gibbons said, gWe appreciate the speedy approval process established U.S. Department of Education and we will expeditiously distribute this money to our school districts.h

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan commended Nevada for being one of the first states to apply for this special federal funding. The funding is expected to create 1,400 teaching and teaching support jobs statewide during the current school year.

Governor Gibbons has received assurances from the superintendents of both Clark County and Washoe County School Districts that the new federal funds will be used to create new teaching jobs and not to fund raises for existing teacher positions.

Governor Gibbons has communicated to school superintendents and school boards that his preference is to fund additional teaching positions to reduce class sizes, not only in primary grades but also in upper elementary grades, and in important subject areas such as high school mathematics.
