*****This is a draft for final editing. The completed article will be post in the morning on November 2, 2004. Our Asian American great leader Elaine Chao in America By Tiffany Chang ¡°To succeed in the 21st Century, our nation must be prepared to adapt to changes in our economy¡ªin how we work, where we work, and how we balance our professional and family lives.¡± ¡ªU. S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao ------------------------------------------- "Getting people back to work is what this Department does. Giving people hope in their future is our job," said Secretary Elaine L. Chao of the U. S. Department of Labor.*1 "Incentives brings us with encouragement. Encouragement brings us with good work performance. In the 5:19 on Ecclesiastes of the Bible, it stated that 'When God gives any man (or woman) wealth and possessions, and enable him (or her) to enjoy them, to accept his (or her) lot and be happy in his (or her) work---this is a gift of God,'*2" said Dr. Tony Lei, President of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI).*3 At the age of 19, Elaine Chao was elected as a Scholar of the U. S. White House. U. S. Labor Secretary Chao was Chairperson of Federal Air Transportation and Vice President of Bank of American Main Office. In addition, she has contributed many years of community service and charity endeavor notably, as President of United Way, President of Peace Corps, and Senior Fellow of Heritage Foundation.*4 Secretary Chao received her B. A. degree in Economics with straight A's for all her four years at the famous Mount Holyoke College in New England. She obtained her M. B. A. degree from Harvard University in 1979. She also studied at M.I.T., Dartmouth College, and Columbia University. At the time she was nominated by President Bush as the Secretary of Labor, she told her father that she does not intend to be an "Authoritative Official". She hoped that she could contribute to our society and nation.*5 Secretary Chao has received numerous awards for her professional accomplishments and community service. She is the recipient of 21 honorary doctoral degrees from colleges and universities around the world. Secretary Chao is married to the Majority Whip of the United States Senate, Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. "Elaine L. Chao is the nation's 24th Secretary of Labor, representing a new generation of American leadership. Since her confirmation by the United States Senate on January 29, 2001, she has been dedicated to carrying out the Department of Labor's mission of inspiring and protecting the hardworking people of America. She is respected as an effective and articulate champion of the nation's contemporary workforce, acting quickly to focus the Labor Department on the modern realities of workers' lives."*6 "When President George W. Bush nominated Elaine L. Chao, the first Asian-American woman appointed to a President's cabinet in U.S. history, he described her as an individual with strong executive talent, compassion, and commitment to helping people build better lives." According to the U. S. Department of Labor, Secretary Elaine Chao's compassionate nature stems from her own background as an immigrant to this country at the age of eight. Her family's experience transitioning to a new country, supported by one another and the kindness of friends and neighbors, taught her that encouragement is the key to fostering independence, and that Americans are naturally compassionate people. This inspired her to dedicate most of her professional life to ensuring that people have the opportunity to pursue lives of dignity and financial independence. As Director of the Peace Corps, Ms. Elaine Chao was one of the first Americans to personally embrace the people of the former communist bloc into the family of democratic nations, establishing Peace Corps programs in the Baltic nations of Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and the newly independent states of the former Soviet Union. Later, as President and Chief Executive Officer of United Way of America, she restored public trust and confidence after the organization was tarnished by mismanagement and financial abuse, thus preserving the nation's largest institution of private charitable giving. The experience Ms. Elaine Chao gained at the United Way helping communities address their local needs prepared her to mobilize the Department of Labor to promote pathways to economic freedom for individuals and families working to achieve the American Dream. She describes her vision for America's workforce as one in which everyone can participate where jobs and opportunities are available for those leaving welfare, job training is accessible for those left behind, disability never bars a qualified person from the workplace, and where parents have an easier time balancing the responsibilities of work and home. "Secretary Chao's previous government career includes serving as the Deputy Secretary at the U.S. Department of Transportation, Chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission, and Deputy Maritime Administrator in the U.S. Department of Transportation. She brings a wealth of business experience to the post, having worked as Vice President of Syndications at BankAmerica Capital Markets Group and a banker with Citicorp. Prior to her nomination as Secretary, she expanded her study of policy as a Distinguished Fellow at The Heritage Foundation, a Washington-based public policy research and educational institute. She was selected as a White House Fellow in 1983," states the Department.*7 Following the inspiration of the past many years of the accomplishment of Ms. Elaine Chao's contribution of humane spirit to our society, we have the persistense of Wou Shien's spirit for education here in America. If a coolie and hard woker like him could dedicate to eduction by offering all his income and life to build a school for children in his village, what should not for us to offer our efforts for our community?*8 To serve our community with wisdom and effort is the main creed of Washington Business and Technology Institute. It is our pleasure for community service to post the following introduction about Secretary Elaine Chao from the Office of U. S. Department of Labor: ÚwСÌm²¿éLº†½é*9 Meet U. S. From:Jean Liu [jeanl@kairos-usa.org] Subject: Fw: From A Medic In Iraq Fri, 29 Oct 2004 10:19:57 -0700Dear friends: I am a media worker. I know the power of the media. The forwarding message shared some good news that you'll never see in your TV. in Christ, Jean Can you circulate this? This is a letter from Ray Reynolds, a medic in the Iowa Army National Guard, serving in Iraq: As I head off to Baghdad for the final weeks of my stay in Iraq, I wanted to say thanks to all of you who did not believe the media. They have done a very poor job of covering everything that has happened. I am sorry that I have not been able to visit all of you during my two week leave back home! And just so you can rest at night knowing something is happening in Iraq that is noteworthy, I thought I would pass this on to you. This is the list of things that has happened in Iraq recently: (Please share it with your friends and compare it to the version that your paper is producing.) * Over 400,000 kids have up-to-date immunizations. * School attendance is up 80% from levels before the war. * Over 1,500 schools have been renovated and rid of the weapons stored there so education can occur. * The port of Uhm Qasar was renovated so grain can be off-loaded from ships faster. * The country had its first 2 billion barrel export of oil in August. * Over 4.5 million people have clean drinking water for the first time ever in Iraq. * The country now receives 2 times the electrical power it did before the war. * 100% of the hospitals are open and fully staffed, compared to 35% before the war. * Elections are taking place in every major city, and city councils are in place. * Sewer and water lines are installed in every major city. * Over 60,000 police are patrolling the streets. * Over 100,000 Iraqi civil defense police are securing the country. * Over 80,000 Iraqi soldiers are patrolling the streets side by side with US soldiers. * Over 400,000 people have telephones for the first time ever. * Students are taught field sanitation and hand washing techniques to prevent the spread of germs. * An interim constitution has been signed. * Girls are allowed to attend school. * Textbooks that don't mention Saddam are in the schools for the first time in 30 years. Don't believe for one second that these people do not want us there. I have met many, many people from Iraq that want us there, and in a bad way. They say they will never see the freedoms we talk about but they hope their children will. We are doing a good job in Iraq and I challenge anyone, anywhere to dispute me on these facts. If you are like me and very disgusted with how this period of rebuilding has been portrayed, email this to a friend and let them know there are good things happening. Google --- A task for entrepreneurial spirit By GSBPA of WBTI*1 "Since its IPO on Aug. 19, Google has seen one of the most impressive runups in share price since the heyday of the dot-com era - a 114 percent jump from its offering price as of Tuesday's close. But unlike the dot-com era, few investors seem to be cashing out for the quick buck," reported the Las Vegas Review-Journal on October 27, 2004.*2 "The number of people who have bought Google and held on to it is really surprising," said Jeff Seely, chief executive officer of Sharebuilder.com, an online brokerage that allows individual investors to accumulate shares through regular partial payments. "It's a new stock, but it's regularly in our top 10 stocks that our customers want to accumulate." "Seely said that of the more than 5,000 Sharebuilder.com customers who have accumulated Google stock, only 13 percent have sold part or all of their shares," the newspaper continued. "I think it shows a lot of maturity among investors, and it certainly shows that Google has matured as a stock," Seely said.*3 "Google Inc. on Thursday became the first tech heavyweight to tackle the daunting task of uncluttering computers, introducing a program that quickly scours hard drives for documents, e-mails, instant messages and past Web searches," reported MICHAEL LIEDTKE, an AP Business Writer, on October 15, 2004.*4 "UNLESS YOU'VE BEEN LIVING IN A CAVE, you've seen enormous changes in communications technology over the past two decades. From orbiting satellites routing long distance phone calls to email to undreamed-of growth of the Internet, the age of communicating online, using computers and networks, is upon us all," stated at the first paragraphy of the 'Introduction' of the book, "How to say it online: everything you need to know to master the new language of cyberspac," written by Kim Baker and Sunny Baker.*5 "And what could be better news? To keep in touch, there's nothing faster or cheaper than email. To gain access to information and people, the power of online communication expands your reach from the local to the global. To meet new friends and even romance a potential life partner, online venues provide rich opportunities (if you know the right things to say and the best way to say them). At school, the Internet places volumes of knowledge on ever subject at your fingertips, and at work, computer networks make business communication more efficient than ever." *6 Whether you are in business or in non-profit organization, you need to have a Web site. This seems to be a common wisdom in now- a-days. Think seriously about the needs of your market before you go onto the Web to make more money for business, to develop better non-profit organization, or to contribute to more community service. "It's hard to believe that Fred's Service Station really needs a Web Site to reap new profits. However, for some businesses and professional service firms, the Internet and web to gether offer viable marketing and distribution opportunities. Software companies, online magazines, and email order businesses can do quite well from the Web --- if the owners know how to say the right things on their sites. The Secrets of a Successful Web Site: Just having a site on the Web will do almost nothing to sell your products or services. To promote your Web site, there are three things you must do: (1). You must register your Web site with the best search engines. (2). You should consider using the many free and not free advertising opportunities on the Web. (3) You should search the Web regularly for competitive and related sites, where you can attach a link to your site."*7 To be more successful for your Web site, you need to be favored by the famous search engine services like Yahoo! (www.yahoo.com), Aol! (www.aol.com), Google! (www.google.com), Infoseek! (www.infoseek.com), among others. "With the free desktop program, Google hopes to build upon the popularity of its Internet-leading search engine and become even more indispensable to the millions of people who entrust the Mountain View-based company to find virtually anything online. The new product, available at http://desktop.google.com , ups the ante in Google's intensifying battle with software giant Microsoft Corp. and Yahoo Inc., which owns the world's second most popular search engine," Writer MICHAEL LIEDTKE continued.*8 "There is no longer any such thing as a purely national economy. The rest of the world is just too big to ignore, either as a market or as a competitor. If business schools do nothing other than to train their students to think internationally, they would have accomplished an important task," said John Young, CEO, Hewlett-Packard.*9 Innovation is the key to success, managers are looking everywhere in the global organization for new ideas. Modern companies would view Information technology (IT) as a major competitive differentiator. Strategic businesses emphazise the ueses of information technology for management. International companies develop their global IT platforms by integrating worldwide hardware, software, and Internet-based network architecture. Commuunication technology, for example the teleconferencing and computer networks, is making it possible for people from subsidiaries around the world to work together on project. Many business are becoming global companies and moving toward transnational e-business strategies in which they integrate the global business activities of their subsidiaries and headquarters. The international dimemsions of managing global e-business technologies include dealing with cultural, political, and geoeconomic challenges posed by various countries for global marketplace. The e-business technologies are changing the distribution, relatonships, resources, and responsibilities of managers. Information Technology is helping managers of e-business to eliminate layers of amangement, enabling more collaborative forms of management, providing them with significant information technology resources, and confront them with major e-business and e-commerce challenge. Innovation is the key to success, managers are looking everywhere in the global organization for new ideas. Modern companies would view Information technology (IT) as a major competitive differentiator. Strategic businesses emphazise the ueses of information technology for management. International companies develop their global IT platforms by integrating worldwide hardware, software, and Internet-based network architecture. Commuunication technology, for example the teleconferencing and computer networks, is making it possible for people from subsidiaries around the world to work together on project.*10 In order to keep the online universe a productive, safe, communicative environment, it is interesting and worth to post the ten commandments for computer ethics. They were created by the Computer Ethics Institute: (1). Thou shalt not use a computer to harm other people. (2). Thou shalt not interfere with other people's computer work. (3). Thou shalt not snoop around in other people's files. (4). Thou shalt not use a computer to steal. (5). Thou shalt not use a computer to bear false witness. (6). Thou shalt not use or copy softwear for which you have not paid. (7). Thou shalt not use other people's computer resources without authorization. (8). Thou shalt not appropriate other people's intellectual output. (9). Thou shalt think about the social consequences of the program you write. (10). Thou shalt use a computer in ways that show consideration and respect. A sucessful businessperson always know the old rule that says "It's easier to keep an existing customer than to find a new one." In online customer relationships, this rule is just as important. Your goal should not only to get new visitors, but to cultivate your customer base to yield repeat sales, services, and referrals from satisfied purchasers, clients, and patronagers. "Besides a good product or service, there are only three things you need for successful online customer relations: strong communication, common courtesy, and exemplary customer service. Unfortunately, these old-fashioned values are often missing in many companies' online promotional communication." *11 --------------------------- References *1. Dr. Tony Lei received the Proclamation of Clark County Board of Commissioners By GSBPA of WBTI*1Tue, 26 Oct 2004 08:39:25 -0700 "Judi O'Leary" JUO@Co.Clark.NV.US Good Morning, The proclamation is done and can be picked up at the Clark County Government Center any time...or I can mail it to you, whichever you prefer. Just let me know! Thanks, Judi*2 It is our pleasure to post the following article with a some modication (the renewal proclamation was given on October 26, 2004) after one year of the time: Chief Justice Bill Maupin names Dr. Tony Lei as a 'Son of Nevada'*3 By Cheryl Moss, Jessie Walsh, and Tiffany Chang It is not unusual here in Nevada to have an individual who always gives herself or himself to the work both for the people and in Lord, because she or he knows that her or his labor for the people and in Lord is not in vain. Whenever we do, work at it with all our heart, as working for the Lord, not solely for men, since we know that we will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. "WHEREAS, it is an honor and privileg for the Board of County Commissioners to recognize those extraordinary individuals, groups, or programs which enrich the lives of many in our community; and WHEREAS, Dr. Tony T. Lei, Ed. D., a famous resident of Clark County for more than eleven years, has served the community through a variety of venues including: President of Washington Business and Technology Institute; Senior Advisor for Congresswoman Shelley Berkley, Office of Clark County District Attorney, Constanble's Office of Las Vegas Township, and Raleigh, Hunt, McGarry & Drizin, P.C.; Director and Secretary of South Shores Community Association; Honorary President of Great Wall College and Xiamen Straits Foreign Language College; Chairman of Chinese American Academic Association of Nevada; Contributing Editor and Columnist of "Nevada Examiner" and "Reviewjournal.com - WBTI website"; and WHEREAS, Dr. Tony Lei received his M.B.A. and Doctor of Education in Institutional Management degrees from Pepperdine University in 1969 and 1990, respectively. He had been an Associate Professor of Information Management and a Fellow of Management of the Graduate School of Business Administration of National Chung Hsing University and Pepperdine University from 1985 to 1991 and 1991 to 1996, respectively. Now, THEREFORE, WE, the Board of County Commissioners of Clark County, on this occasion, October 26, 2004, in celebration and recognition of his distingueshed professionalism and outstanding accomplishments, do hereby recognize and honor Dr. Tony T. Lei, Ed. D. and urge all citizens to join us wishing him a succesful and bright future." "The above Proclamation*4 was signed by the Clark County Chairman Chip Maxfield, Vice-Chair Myrna Williams, Commissioners Bruce L. Woodbury, Marry Kincaid-Chauncey, Yvonne Atkinson Gate, Lynette Boggs Mcdonald, and Rory Reid. It was attested by County Clerk Shirley B. Parraguirre. (The above proclamation is a renewal at October 26, 2004. The paragraphs are an update.) As a humble and sincere American Coolie (hardworking man) like him, Dr. Tony Lei has given freely of his time, energy, knowledge, and talents, working on projects and events that contribute to the quality of life in Nevada and has dedicated himself to public service to not only the Asian Community but to all citizens. It's my great pleasure to name Dr. Tony Lei as a Son of Nevada," said the Chief Justice of Nevada Supreme Court William Maupin at the Celebration Party to "Nevada Examiner" and "Reviewjournal.com" at the Steak House of Binion's Horseshoe Club, Las Vegas on October 10, 2002. The Party was held by WBTI to celebrate William Maupin's being appointed as its Fellow of the Public Administration Institution (PAI) and as its Honorary Chairman of the Clark County District Attorney and Police Civil Commission (CCDAPCC). After the 911 last year, we need to encourage the launching of activities to promote and attract tourism, trade, and investment from foreign countries to Nevada by Dr. Tony Lei. He has been honored by Xiamen, Fukien, China; China Business Chain, Inc.; Shanghai People's Municipal Government Cooperation Office; and China State Development and Planning Commission as Chairman of Nevada Expo Mission to China to attend Sisters Universities Establishment Celebration; the Annual International Mayors for City Development Forum; and the Shanghai International Industrial Fair and Yangtze Investment Project Expo. Dr. Tony Lei will organize a sound team joined by many high-ranking officials both of Nevada and California. U. S. Congresswoman Shelley Berkley, Lt. Governor Lorraine Hunt, and Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman have been honored by WBTI as Honorary Chairpersons of our Nevada Expo Mission to China.*5 As the "Bible" inspired us that, "When God gives any man wealth and possesions, and enables him to enjoy them, to accept his lot and be happy in his work --- this is a gift of God." *6 --------------------------------------------------------------- References *1. *****This is a part of draft for final editing. It will probably be post with modification in the morning on or before October 25, 2004. Lynette McDonald has been appointed Adjunct Assistant Professor of GSBPA by WBTI By Bill Young, Jessie Walsh, and Tiffany Chang The Graduate School of Business and Public Administration (GSBPA) of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) was established early in 2003. Drs. E. Lee Bernick and Keong Leong were appointed as Deans of the School by WBTI on March 11, 2003. "The mission of this School will emphasize the humanitarian orientation of public administration adn social responsibility of business management . Throuugh academic entrepreneurship, we may expect the endeavor of this school for the community service based on humane spirit, led by Chairperson Elaine Chao of WBTI," said Dr. Dina Titus, Professor of Administrative Strategies in GSBPA. Dina is a Senator of Nevada Senate and Adjunct Professor of Political Science of UNLV.*1 "Through the recommendation by our faculty members including District Judge Jessie Walsh and Clak County Sheriff Bill Young, Ms. Lynette Boggs McDonald has been appointed Adjunct Assistant Professor of the Graduate School of Business and Public Administration (GSBPA) of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) on October 21, 2004," announced Dr. John Wang, Spokesman of WBTI, on Friday, October 22, 2004 in Las Vegas, Nevada. "It's my great pleasure to accept the task, responsibility, and practice," said Lynette McDonald at the time when she was informed by President of WBTI Dr. Tony Lei for the appointment. "With the capacity on adjunct basis, it's good for me to develop my entrepreneurial spirit by utilizing both my advanced education in public adminstration and practical experience in managerial responsibilities at UNLV." A self-described "Army brat," Boggs McDonald spent her childhood on American Army bases in Germany and Italy, and has lived in Las Vegas for the last 13 years. She is a business graduate of the University of Notre Dame, attended the University of Oregon Graduate School of Journalism and received a Master's of Public Administration degree from UNLV.*2 From 1994 to 1997 Lynette served as the Assistant City Manager for the City of Las Vegas. She was the first woman to lead a city council ward in the history of the city of Las Vegas, receiving 70 percent of the vote in Ward 2 during the 2001 election. In April of 2004 she was appointed by Governor Guinn to serve as County Commissioner in District F. Having served over the past decade in local government makes her uniquely prepared to deal with the challenges facing her district and our community. As our County Commissioner, Lynette is working with community stakeholders to update neighborhood master plans so that responsible and predictable land-use decisions can be made. She negotiated a land exchange with the BLM and a local developer to preserve Red Rock Canyon. When a developer failed to keep his commitment to donate land for a new school, she blocked his building permits until he made good on that promise. Lynette will continue fighting to ensure developers live up to their agreements with Clark County residents, especially on the issue of identifying sites for schools, fire stations, police substations and parks.*3 Clark County Commissioner Lynette Boggs McDonald was appointed by President Bush to serve on a national commission related to international study programs. Boggs McDonald, a Republican appointed to the County Commission in March, said she is "honored and humbled" to be one of four people chosen by Bush for the Commission on the Abraham Lincoln Study Abroad Fellowship Program.*4 The commission will launch the new program, which is designed to expose Americans to international cultures, governments and economic systems, and which will probably work with the U.S. State Department. "To encourage the cooperation and development of English and Chinese speaking countries with Nevada has been particularly important to our country at this critical period of time. The establishment of GSBPA will launch our effort that emphasizes the value of humane and administrative orientation. The creed of this School is both on the spirit of educational excellence and academic entrepreneurship. We're forecasting the smoth and efficient growth of this School together with the growth of the tourism industry and the economy of Nevada after the 911 and SARS," Dr. E. Lee Bernick, Dean of GSBPA, who is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Public Administration of UNLV, said at the Summer 2003 Symposium and Dinner Party. It was held by WBTI at the Zax Restaurant of Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino on May 19, 2003 in Las Vegas, Nevada.*5 ---------------------------------------------------- References *1. Tony T. Lei, Ed. D., a famous resident of Clark County for more than nine years, has served the community through a variety of venues including: President of Washington Business and Technology Institute; Senior Advisor for Congresswoman Shelley Berkley, Office of Clark County District Attorney, and Constanble's Office of Las Vegas Township; Director and Secretary of South Shores Community Association; Honorary President of Great Wall College and Xiamen Straits Foreign Language College; Chairman of Chinese American Academic Association of Nevada; Contributing Editor and Columnist of "Nevada Examiner"; and WHEREAS, Dr. Tony Lei received his M.B.A. and Doctor of Education in Institutional Management degrees from Pepperdine University in 1969 and 1980, respectively. He had been an Associate Professor of Information Management and a Fellow of Management of the Graduate School of Business Administration of National Chung Hsing University and Pepperdine University from 1985 to 1991 and 1991 to 1996, respectively. Now, THEREFORE, WE, the Board of County Commissioners of Clark County, on this occasion, October 1, 2002, in celebration and recognition of his distingueshed professionalism and outstanding accomplishments, do hereby recognize and honor Dr. Tony T. Lei, Ed. D. and urge all citizens to join us wishing him a succesful and bright future." "The above Proclamation was signed by the Clark County Chairman Dario Herera, Vice-Chair Myrna Williams, Commissioners Yvonne Atkinson Gate, Marry Kincaid- Chauncey, Chip Maxfield, Erin Kenny, Bruce L Woodbury, and attested by County Clerk Shirley B. Parraguirre. As a humble and sincere American Coolie (hardworking man) like him, Dr. Governor Lorraine Hunt, and Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman have been honored by WBTI as Honorary Chairpersons of our Nevada Expo Mission to China.*2 As the "Bible" inspired us that, "When God gives any man wealth and possesions, and enables him to enjoy them, to accept his lot and be happy in his work --- this is a gift of God." *3 --------------------------------------------------------------- References *1. September 4, 2004 Dear Club member; Our next meeting will be in conjunction with our $5 Dinner with Congresswoman Shelley Berkley and Congressional District 3 Candidate Tom Gallagher Wednesday, September 20, 2004* at 6:30 PM, at our new meeting place, the Teamsters Local #14 building, 1250 Burnham Street. See map below. Please invite your friends. (*Soon after receiving this e-mail in the morning of Friday, October 1, 2004, Dr. Tony Lei called John to correct the date from September 20 to October 20. And John corrected it soon afterward with thanks.) We are getting closer and closer to the Presidential election and we must do all we can to bring the Kerry/ Edwards campaign to victory. The most important thing we can do is to get Democrats registered and then to the polls to vote. The State of Nevada with its 5 electoral votes doesn¡¯t sound very important but we are. In 2000 we only had 4 electoral votes but if we could have carried the State for Gore he would be President of the United States right now. I have a personal stake in this election as I have the honor of being one of the 5 members of the Electoral College for the Democratic Party and will go to Carson City to cast a vote when Kerry wins. Besides the Presidential race we must also work hard to elect our other Democrats to Congress, the State Senate , Assembly, County Commission and other non Partisan races where there are Democrats against Republicans. To do volunteer work call Democratic headquarters 737-8683 or stop by their new headquarters at 1325 E. Vegas Valley Dr. ( East of Maryland Pkwy). It is imperative that we keep the County Commission Democratic. We must support Tom Collins and David Goldwater in their races, to help Tom call 645-2617, David 796-5644. The Woman¡¯s Democratic Club is having a 50th Golden Anniversary Gala Dinner on Saturday October 9th at Mandalay Bay. Tickets are $125, for more information call 615-4522. Guinn calls for Augustine to resign GovernoR RECOMMENDS LEGISLATURE PREPARE FOR IMPEACHMENT PROCEEDING CARSON CITY - Gov. Kenny Guinn today called for Kathy Augustine to resign immediately, citing the State Controller¡¯s admitted guilt to three willful violations of state law before the Nevada Commission on Ethics. Last week, Augustine agreed to pay a $15,000 fine issued by the Ethics Commission for her transgressions. Barring the State Controller¡¯s resignation, Gov. Guinn would call for a Special Session of the Nevada Legislature for the second week of November, in order to allow adequate preparation time for all parties involved. Because the State Controller admitted guilt to three willful violations of state law, the Nevada Commission on Ethics was required to forward its findings to the Nevada State Assembly for impeachment consideration. Gov. Guinn is prepared to call for a special session of the State Legislature so the Assembly may carry out impeachment proceedings. ¡°You cannot place a price tag on ethics when it comes to the people¡¯s business,¡± Gov. Guinn said. ¡°This matter cannot linger until the start of the upcoming legislative session.¡± Gov. Guinn stressed that the matter of the State Controller must be addressed soon so that the State Legislature can focus on the important business of the state in the constitutionally limited 120-day session that is held every two years. ¡°Should Kathy Augustine decide not to resign, she does deserve a fair hearing,¡± Gov. Guinn said. ¡°The legislature needs to resolve this matter as soon as possible because it is faced with important budget and tax issues such as a proposed cap on property taxes - a far-reaching issue that touches every property and business owner in our state. The legislature also needs to clarify and/or restructure parts of tax legislation taken in the last legislative session. These and other issues require the legislature¡¯s undivided attention. It is my hope the legislature can proceed during the regular session without being impeded by the distraction of an impeachment proceeding.¡± Office of the Governor Grant Sawyer State Office Building 101 North Carson Street 555 East Washington, Suite 5100 Carson City, NV 89701 Las Vegas, NV 89101 Fax: 775-684-7198 Fax: 702-486-2505 99999999999999 0000000000000000000000000 111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111 ************************************************* | |
