CAMPAIGN 2008: Tourism gets push in election
Media blitz will put focus on Las Vegas, Orlando, Fla.
By BENJAMIN SPILLMAN
REVIEW-JOURNAL

Elections
The lobbying arm of the nation's $740 billion travel industry will use Las Vegas and Orlando, Fla., to gain a stronger foothold in the presidential race.

Officials from the Travel Industry Association announced Thursday they would spend nearly $500,000 to engage voters in Nevada and Florida, two important swing states in the campaign, which are also economically dependent on the travel industry.

The outreach, mostly composed of print advertising, will provide voters with scorecards to track how Democratic candidate Barack Obama and Republican candidate John McCain intend to reverse a travel decline that started in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, and lately has been aggravated by rising oil prices and waning consumer confidence.

The confluence of a close election and anxiety over the economy, especially in places such as Las Vegas, prompted the industry group to jump into the presidential fray.

"In each media market the presidential race is too close to call," said Mike Murphy, a prominent Republican strategist working on the travel campaign.

"The voters in these markets are very concerned," he added.

Although Murphy is known primarily for working with Republicans, officials from the Travel Industry Association stressed the campaign is bipartisan.

The idea is to urge candidates to address issues that have contributed to a travel decline the industry group said has cost the American economy $140 billion in spending and 230,000 tourism jobs since 2000. The slowdown in international visitation to America comes despite a global increase in travel, something the industry says is reflective of government policies that make it inconvenient and uncomfortable for foreigners to visit the United States.

"It is high time the candidates really address this," said Roger Dow, president and chief executive officer of the Travel Industry Association.

Hassles with customs and homeland security issues and delays in the visa process are blamed for lagging visitation numbers by foreign tourists.

"They are afraid they are going to let (Osama) bin Laden in; sometimes they are less than pleasant," said Rep. Jon Porter, R-Nev.

Porter said reports of incidents in which airport security officers search the contents of laptop computers have the potential to dissuade visitation to the United states.

"If that is happening, it has to stop," Porter said. "We want to make the experience comfortable for traveling."

Also, the United States doesn't have a coordinated advertising campaign to attract tourists. The travel group is behind a bill that would raise $200 million annually from private and public sources to create a marketing campaign to promote the United States abroad.

The latest outreach coincides with a poll the association conducted in Nevada and Florida to gauge voters' knowledge and opinions on travel and the presidential race.

The Nevada poll was taken in the Las Vegas media market, an area that comprises Las Vegas, Clark County and some surrounding communities.

It showed Obama with a five-point lead over McCain, 42 to 38 percent with 19 percent of those polled undecided.

According to the travel industry poll, 95 percent of people who responded said travel and tourism are important to the state's economy.

"You have got a rip-snorting race there," Murphy said. "It is in the interest of both candidates to go after these voters hook, line and sinker."

The campaign is designed to peak during the Democratic and Republican conventions.

Sharing stage, Obama and McCain split on abortion
By CHARLES BABINGTON and BETH FOUHY
Associated Press Writers

LAKE FOREST, Calif. (AP) -- Presidential contenders Barack Obama and John McCain differed on abortion Saturday, with McCain saying a baby's human rights begin "at conception," while Obama restated his support for legalized abortion.

Appearing on the same stage for the first time in months, although they overlapped only briefly, the two men shared their views on a range of moral, foreign and domestic issues.

Obama said he would limit abortions in the late stages of pregnancy if there are exceptions for the mother's health. He said he knew that people who consider themselves pro-life will find his stance "inadequate."

He said the government should do more to prevent unwanted pregnancies and to help women who give birth, such as provide needed resources to the poor, as well as better adoption services.

McCain expressed his anti-abortion stand simply and quickly, saying human rights begin the instant that a human egg is fertilized. McCain, who adopted a daughter from Bangladesh, also called for making adoption easier.

Their comments came at a two-hour forum on faith hosted by the minister Rick Warren at his megachurch in Orange County, Calif. Obama joined Warren for the first hour, and Obama for the second. The two men briefly shook hands and hugged each other during the switch.

Warren asked both men the same questions. McCain said he did not see or hear Obama's session, which might have given him an advantage.

Obama said America's greatest moral failure is its insufficient help to the disadvantaged. He noted that the Bible quotes Jesus as saying "whatever you do for the least of my brothers, you do for me." He said the maxim should apply to victims of poverty, sexism and racism.

McCain said the nation's greatest moral shortcoming is its failure to "devote ourselves to causes greater than our self-interests."

After the September 2001 terrorist attacks, McCain said, there should have been a national push for joining the Peace Corps and other volunteer organizations. His comment seemed an indirect criticism of President Bush, who had urged tax cuts and more shopping to stimulate the economy at the time.

He also said he would pursue Osama bin Laden "to the gates of Hell," another goal that might be seen as a swipe at Bush's administration.

Both men said marriage is a union between a man and a woman. Obama added that he supports civil unions for gay partners, giving them rights such as hospital visits with one another.

In several cases, Obama gave a Christian interpretation to his generally liberal political views. He showed some familiarity with the Scripture, and said Jesus died for his sins.

McCain tended to give shorter, less complex answers. On domestic matters, he restated his call to "drill now" in U.S. lands and waters for oil and natural gas.

When Warren asked Obama to define the word "rich," the Illinois senator teased him about the mammoth sales of his book, "The Purpose Driven Life." He noted his plan to add a Social Security payroll tax to incomes above $250,000 a year.

McCain said, "some of the richest people I've ever known in my life are the most unhappy."

He said being rich should be defined by having a home and a prosperous and safe world. Without mentioning Obama, he said some want to increase taxes.

"I don't want to take any money from the rich. I want everybody to get rich," McCain said. "I don't want to raise anybody's taxes. I really don't."

When pushed on an exact number, he turned to his humor. "If you're just talking about income, how about five million?" he joked, before pivoting to clarify: "I'm sure that comment will be distorted."

Asked to name three wise people they would listen to, Obama named his wife, Michelle; his maternal grandmother, who lives in Hawaii; and, not limiting himself to only a third, named several Democratic and Republican lawmakers.

McCain named Gen. David Petreaus, head of U.S. troops in Iraq; U.S. Rep. and veteran civil rights leader John Lewis, D-Ga.; and former eBay CEO Meg Whitman, a top adviser to his campaign.

He lauded her as a woman who took a five-person business into a billion-dollar piece of the economy. "It's one of these great economic success stories," McCain said.

Obama, asked his most significant policy shift in the last 10 years, cited welfare reform. As an Illinois state senator, he worked to mitigate what he thought could be "disastrous" effects of President Clinton's welfare reform effort, but over time came to embrace Clinton's approach.

"We have to have work as a centerpiece of any social policy," Obama said.

The forum carried opportunities and risks for both candidates. It gave Obama a chance to discuss his Christian faith and counter inaccurate beliefs that he is a Muslim. But it also may have highlighted his positions on issues such as supporting abortion rights, which Warren and many other evangelicals oppose.

McCain's positions are more in line with evangelical Christians. But he often seems uncomfortable talking about his faith and other personal beliefs, and the Christian right shows less enthusiasm for him than for past GOP contenders.

According to Saddleback Church officials, there are 2,200 people in the main room and a total of 4,200 including those watching from satellite locations.

Both parties reach for center on abortion debate
By CHARLES BABINGTON
Associated Press Writer

ASPEN, Colo. (AP) -- As Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain compete for centrist voters in their presidential race, both parties have made intriguing nods to the political center on the emotional issue of abortion.

McCain startled conservatives this week, and pleased some moderates, by suggesting he might pick a running mate who supports abortion rights, such as former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge.

Democrats, meanwhile, had it both ways in revising their party platform ahead of this month's nominating convention in Denver. Platform-writers said the party "unequivocally" supports legalized abortion, a stronger phrase than the 2004 platform contained.

But they also bolstered the section on reducing the need for abortions. The version awaiting approval in Denver says the party "strongly supports access to comprehensive affordable family planning services and age-appropriate sex education." It says the party "strongly supports a woman's decision to have a child by ensuring access to and availability of programs for pre- and postnatal health care, parenting skills, income support and caring adoption programs."

Democratic officials also gave a convention speaking slot to Sen. Bob Casey Jr., D-Pa., who opposes abortion rights. His father, the late Pennsylvania Gov. Robert P. Casey, was denied a coveted slot at the 1992 convention because of his opposition to abortion rights.

The recent developments are hardly seismic shifts in the nation's long-running but largely static debate over abortion rights. Still, they suggest that both parties sense that a large, if vaguely defined, middle group of Americans would like to see abortion vanish, but not by legal decree.

Indeed, polls consistently show that most Americans strongly dislike abortion but do not want it outlawed in the early stages of pregnancy.

Many Republicans were unsure what to make of McCain's remarks this week to the conservative magazine The Weekly Standard, in which he said Ridge's pro-choice position would not rule him out as a running mate. While McCain said in 1999 that Roe v. Wade - the landmark Supreme Court ruling legalizing abortion - should not be overturned, he otherwise has consistently opposed such rights.

He repeatedly has voted against federal funding for abortion and has opposed federal Medicaid funds for abortion even in cases of rape or incest.

Some conservative groups howled about McCain's comments this week. The American Family Association asked readers of its Web site what they would do if he had a pro-abortion-rights running mate. More than 5,000 people responded, with 37 percent saying they would vote for McCain as "the lesser of two evils." One percent backed Obama, 16 percent said they would not vote and 46 percent said they would seriously consider a third-party candidate.

Some less dogmatic conservatives were open to the idea. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., a frequent guest on McCain's campaign plane, said he opposes legalized abortion but thinks McCain is wise to consider running mates who differ.

"Our party needs to be open-minded" about such a choice, Graham said in an interview this week on the plane. Parties that rigidly support or oppose abortion rights, he said, "are out of sync with where most Americans are."

On the Democratic front, the revised convention platform language was hailed this week by some Republicans who are backing Obama.

Douglas Kmiec, a former Reagan administration official and Roman Catholic, said the new language moves the debate beyond the "legal dead end and a moral dead end" of being for or against Roe v. Wade.

"What this does, most importantly, is to commit the Democratic Party to supply real support for the child, for the woman facing this question," said Kmiec, a constitutional law professor at Pepperdine University.

Kmiec, who opposes abortion, said no political party platform fits exactly with Catholic teaching. "We pursue the art of the possible, and if we move to protect even a single life, we've done a good thing," he said.

Obama, McCain Set for First Joint Election Appearance at California Megachurch
by FOXNews.com
Monday, July 21, 2008

Facebook Stumble Upon del.icio.us Digg Email

Barack Obama and John McCain have agreed to their first joint general election appearance, meeting at Saddleback Church on Aug. 16 for a two-hour forum that is being billed as a ~{!0~}non-debate,~{!1~} according to the church.

Founding pastor and moderator Rick Warren will exclusively pose questions during the Saddleback Civil Forum on Leadership and Compassion to the presumptive presidential nominees. Warren will speak with each candidate for one hour, reads a press release on the event.

Promising to avoid ~{!0!.~}gotcha~{!/~} questions that typically produce heat instead of light,~{!1~} Warren said he would focus on how the candidates~{!/~} make their leadership decisions rather than having them staking out their political positions, the release states.

~{!0~}The primaries proved that Americans care deeply about the faith, values, character and leadership convictions of candidates as much as they do about the issues,~{!1~} Warren said. ~{!0~}While I know both men as friends and they recognize I will be frank, but fair, they also know I will be raising questions in these four areas beyond what political reporters typically ask. This includes pressing issues that are bridging divides in our nation, such as poverty, HIV/AIDS, climate and human rights.~{!1~}

Warren said the candidates didn~{!/~}t want a debate format but rather the two-hour forum. The candidates are expected to appear together briefly before each takes questions from Warren for about an hour. Obama will answer questions for the first hour with McCain following, an order determined by coin toss.

Joshua DuBois, Obama~{!/~}s director of religious affairs, said the senator was ~{!0~}looking forward to going back to Saddleback with his good friend Pastor Rick Warren.~{!1~} Obama spoke at Saddleback in 2006.

The church said approximately 6,500 tickets will be allotted for seating in six different venues throughout the Saddleback campus in Orange County, Calif.
