The Sunday School held by Mrs. Belinda M. Liu on October 22, 2006 was impressive. It was its seventh week. "Thank you for sharing your pictures of your missions trip to Africa. We are so happy looking those wonderful faces of African people,their smiles shows the great joy that they have in the Lord. In her speech to the Women Conference in the morning on September 22, 2006, Mrs. Belinda M. Liu dilivered an amazing testimony. "Two weeks ago in my Sunday School, I met with an elder and wise man (Dr. Tony Lei). He told me that WBTI (Washington Business and Technology Institute) was interested in opening a special section for me which would emphasize the educational and spiritual value. As I read his business card, praise Lord! he's the President. I was quite excited and scared. I was worry not being able to answer him appoximately. I told him that I had no formal education from a bible college. As you know I've been eager to enhance my teaching in Bible with a special website for many years. As the river that flows from the Holy Place, and the beauty of holiness brings worship anew. The 2006 theme is "Arise & Shine - Prepare the Way of the Lord." The Worship was directed by Rev. Stephen Hah. MC was Rev. Tong Liu.

Digging Up Our Past: Chinese Communities in Lumbering and Mining in late 19th Century California and Nevada

Have you ever thought about what it would be like if the community was predominantly Chinese? A 3-year project (1999-2001) with the U.S. Forest Service, UNR, UNLV, Wing Luke Museum in Seattle, and the Passport in Time volunteers provided me with the opportunity to explore life in the late 19th century Chinese mining community called Island Mountain in northeastern Nevada, about twenty-five miles from the Idaho border. Using oral histories, government documents, local records, court documents, photographs, newspapers, and archaeological finds, it has been possible to gain some insight into the character of this transitional Chinatown from 1873 until 1916.*2
In 1873 Emanuel Penrod left his ranch in Genoa in search of gold. He had been one of the original founders of the rich Comstock Lode in Virginia City, but sold out to Henry Comstock before the Lode became a bonanza. He eventually settled down with his wife and children in Genoa and worked in nearby Carson City, the capital of Nevada. When one of his sons died from a tragic accidental death in Carson City, he felt restless and hopped on the Central Pacific Railroad heading east.
The transcontinental, completed in May 1869, opened new areas for mining and among them was the new mining town of Tuscarora, Elko County, which boasted a Chinese population of 2,000, thus rivaling Virginia City and Gold Hill (the Comstock Lode). The Beard brothers had founded the site and brought Chinese workers to help develop the irrigation system needed first for placer mining and then hydraulic mining. The Chinese stayed and mined. There were two Chinatowns and several wealthy merchants, most notably Ah Lee Lake (b. 1855, immigrated 1869, still active 1910), who in the winter wore an ermine lined Chinese silk jacket and who traveled to San Francisco and China regularly to buy supplies for the miners in the area. Ah Lee Lake was the wealthiest Chinese in Elko County and had good relations with both the Chinese and non-Chinese communities. In Tuscarora, Chinese miners worked alone, in groups, or with miners of other ethnic origins. It was a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural community.
Penrod decided to search for a new placer mining site and headed in a northeastern direction after disembarking at the major Central Pacific roundhouse town of Carlin. Instead of heading toward Tuscarora, he went further to the northeast, about 75 miles, near the mining town of Bruno City that quickly became a ghost town. He came upon a 8,000 feet loaf-shaped mountain surrounded by clouds and called it ��Island Mountain.�� There, along with two friends, he discovered a rich new source of gold. He realized he needed water for more placer mining so he turned to Chinese workers, noted for their irrigation systems in China and in the Carson Valley, especially in Genoa, as well as Tuscarora. Eventually they brought in hydraulic mining equipment. A monitor had a force of 5,000 pounds under water pressure. A ��Little Giant�� monitor could blast 16,000 gallons of water a minute and wash away 4,000 cubic yards of earth in a 24-hour period. Penrod and his two associates struck it rich. With his newfound wealth, he ran for State Assembly and won a seat for one year in 1874-5. But his real success was at Island Mountain, where he, his wife, and children had settled and where he lived until 1897. Penrod estimated that during his 24 years at Island Mountain, he took out a quarter of a million dollars. He also set the precedent of allowing law abiding Chinese to remain relatively unmolested.
According to the 1875 state census, 50% of the population of Island Mountain was Euro-American and 50% was Chinese, a total of 50 people. Some of the ditch diggers and miners had come from nearby Tuscarora, Mountain City, and Placerville, Elko County. By 1880 there were 71 inhabitants of Island Mountain: 54 (76%) Chinese, of whom 45 (83%) were miners and the remainder: 4 cooks, 2 woodchoppers, 2 merchants, 1 laundryman, 1 loafer, and 1 prostitute; 6 Native Americans (2 women, 1 child, 1 medicine man, 2 hunters); and 11 Euro-Americans (2 women, 1 farmer, 2 teamsters, 6 miners), including William Allen Penrod and his wife, Rebecca. Nevada attracted the Chinese because its constitution allowed resident aliens to buy, own, and sell land. By 1897 the character of Island Mountain changed because Penrod had sold his interests to the Gold Creek Mining Company, and the company decided to develop a new town named Gold Creek about 3-5 miles away on flat land instead of hillside. There the Euro-Americans resided in their new buildings, but the local hotel had a Chinese cook (Ah Bing, b. 1854, immigrated 1880, single, replaced in 1920 by Charlie King, b. 1874, married). By 1900 there were only five Chinese officially living in Island Mountain. The Gold Creek Mining Company recognized the need to have a larger water supply and built the 137 acre Sunflower Reservoir (821/310 million gallons of water), employing approximately 200 Chinese workers and 89 other workers. Some of these Chinese workers probably remained in the area and a few moved into the recently abandoned houses in Island Mountain, now called Gold Creek��s Chinatown between 1897 and 1900. The Reservoir controlled the water from the canal system that the Chinese had built earlier and improved it to the point that it was maintained by a little boat that sailed along the canal system. Mining was possible only from approximately March to September/October, so most of the Chinese miners had other jobs or spent the winter elsewhere. According to the local newspaper, the average income from a season was $9,000 during peak years, so it was possible for miners to rest upon their laurels on a good year.
In 1903 Doctor and Mrs. Mathey visited Island Mountain and Gold Creek. A professional photographer, Hilda Mathey provided a visual of the town filled primarily with Chinese miners. Two notable residents stood out: Hong Lee and Hong Lem, two brothers who ran the local store on Peking Street for a total of 40 years. When one brother died, the other moved from Tuscarora to take over the business. When the U.S. government required a registration of Chinese businesses, the Hong Lee Store was duly recorded. They sold goods to the local population: Chinese, Native American, Euro-American. They carried American products such as sugar, maple syrup, bullets, and clothing as well as Chinese products, such as silks, rice wine, and preserved vegetables. The Hong Lee Store advertised in the newspaper. They welcomed visitors to the community and this was publicized in the newspaper, in particular, when a reporter traveled through the area and stopped at Hong Lee��s for the traditional shot of whiskey to fend off the freezing cold. Hong Lee��s was on the main route between Carlin/Elko (major Central Pacific/Southern Pacific stations) and Boise until the 1920s. The Chinese also shared their Chinese New Year��s celebration with everyone and ladies were often rewarded with silk handkerchiefs. Lem, as the merchant was called, purchased toads from the children, pickled them, and sent them to China. He probably collected pine nuts from the Native Americans and sent these back to China too.
Hong Lem��s store was well-constructed and branches of willow trees were used for the panes of the air-tight windows. There were at least two rooms in the store and in another building or room was three cooking areas �V probably for the different temperatures needed to boil hot water for tea, high heat for wok cooking, and lower heat for slow cooking, such as making soups. Shortly after 1903 Lem had made enough money to enter into the middle-class and put a middle-class wooden front on his store. His shop was a gathering place for many of the community members, most of whom had turned from mining to ranching as the years passed.
Nearby there was gambling in one of the buildings and the Chinese welcomed Native Americans and Euro-Americans to the gaming tables. Although there was one prostitute counted in 1880, it was more probable that women came to the town on a wagon from Tuscarora as the population decreased. Most of the Chinese miners were unmarried and many spent most of the lives away from women. A few probably married or lived with Native American women from the nearby Shoshone tribe.
Franklin Jesse Baker, a teamster, was among Lem��s close friends and they helped each other in time of need. For example, when Mrs. Baker��s sister was snowed-in and out of food, it was Lem who came to the rescue with provisions for the stranded family. One day Baker testified in court when two men tried to swindle Lem by selling him over $100 worth of goods for his store with the intent of never producing the products. By custom, Chinese testimony in court against whites, especially in criminal cases, were not regarded with any validity so Baker��s testimony was crucial in recovering the money for Lem. The Bakers, like the Martin family, invited Lem and his room mate to dinner and, according to Della Baker Johns, the daughter, ��Mother served what she would normally serve to the family with the exception of always including rice when they came for dinner.�� When Lem was ill, the Bakers and Martins often took him to the doctor in the neighboring town, either Tuscarora or Elko.
As isolated as it might seem to be, the Chinese of Island Mountain were concerned about larger issues. When the 1906 earthquake and fire wrecked San Francisco��s Chinatown, the Chinese in Elko raised money to help their brethen and Lem was among them. From a fragment of a book in Chinese found at the store, it was evident that someone read Chinese and was concerned with the newly established republic (post 1912). Undoubtedly it was Lem since he could sign his name in Chinese.
Lem��s roommate was known as China Joe. In 1910 he sent $1,000 back to his family in China -- $700 more than the average $300 sent to families in China. On the morning of August 2, 1910, he went duck hunting with Bob McKenzie and accidentally drowned in Sunflower Reservoir. Attempts to rescue him had been unsuccessful until the next day when they found him, a duck clutched in his hand. He was buried next to his brother in the local Chinese cemetery and from his headstone, it was revealed that the brothers came from western Guangdong. Thus differences that probably had existed in their homeland were obviously forgotten in their new homeland. Lem observed important Chinese traditions including the Qingming festival every year for the two brothers until his own death.
By 1916 the Hong Lee store disappears from the county tax rolls and one can presume that Lem either died or moved away to spend the last years of his life. With his departure, Island Mountain gradually became a ghost town and then disappeared. Gold Creek burned down in the 1920s and also became a ghost town with a sidewalk that leads nowhere. The Chinese community of Island Mountain thrived during a period of anti-Chinese movement elsewhere in the American west. The residents could establish positive relations with the larger community because of mutual economic benefits, the positive attitude of the community leaders toward other races and ethnic groups, and a frontier spirit that allowed positive interracial interactions.*3

Dr. Chung received her bachelor's degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, master's from Harvard University, and doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Chung began teaching in the history and art departments at UNLV in 1975 and was Director of International Programs (1985-1987) and Chair of the History Department (1994-1996). She has published numerous articles on Chinese and Chinese American history, co-edited a book with Priscilla Wegars, Chinese American Death Rituals: Respecting the Ancestors (Walnut Creek: Alta Mira Press, 2005) and completed a book manuscript on Chinese lumbermen in the American West.

This project is a socio-political analysis of Chinese opera as practiced in various geo-political sites. Jenny Cheng, a rising Chinese American star of music

In June 21-27, 2005, the UNLV Wind Orchestra was invited to perform with the local Marine Band in France. Jenny Cheng joined the performance.
On November 19, 2005, Jenny received the second Prize of the Singing Contest held by Pacific Asian Plaza. She performed in the Chinese New Year's Gala at the Palace Station Casino and Hotel on January 29, 2006.
As the highlight item of the performances, Jenny sang beautiful songs in the Chinese New Year's Festival Gala. It was held by Chinese Association of Las Vegas on February 4, 2006 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Jenny will sing three English songs for Clark High School. It will do the Charity Show for its Music Band. About 500 people will attend the Concert.
As the Owner of Jenny Cheng Piano Studio, Jenny is going to hold the Examination of Music Theory in February and the Examination of Music Talent on March 2006. Twice a year, the Studio has hold Piano Recitals. Students of the Jenny Cheng Piano Studio performed the Winter Recital on December 4, 2005 at the West Sahara Library in Las Vegas, Nevada.
"My endeavor now is to help the young generation have a sound inspiration and better talent in music," said Jenny Cheng. This reminds me what the good words by John Keats that "A thing of beauty is a joy forever."
"Thanks for your email.. after we met in last internet, I had a recital for my piano students on may, and they all passed the musicianship exam on April and got trophies.. besides that, nothing much... but I would definitely give you a contact if I have activites going on.. oh... I will return to university of Las Vegas (UNLV) in coming August for master degree of music performance.. and I am thinking to register my piano students for silverstate piano competition in october.. anyway, thanks a lot for your contact.. I will talk to u soon, I guess. ^_^," wrote Miss Jenny Cheng to Washington Business and Technology Institute.*1

In her speech to the Women Conference in the morning on September 22, 2006, Mrs. Belinda M. Liu dilivered an amazing testimony. "Two weeks ago in my Sunday School, I met with an elder and wise man (Dr. Tony Lei). On a previous Sunday, Mr. David Whitney prayed, announced news, and introduced Mr. John Lei to present the Togo Mission through video. John spoke that, "Enthusiastic responses were shown by the people of the several villages that we visited. In one of them, we had more than thirty of them baptized. During the trip, we hsd more than 40 of them surrendered to believe God. The whole mission was very blessed. They were so joyful. Praise God! God worked with us during the mission through our glorification in His name." The video and presentation were very nice.

Moreover, because of the popular building of radio communication networks, wireless techniques may access important information from the web and condense it to be appeared on the small web connecting machines such as a hand-held screen. The open free software LINUX operating system can even connect various stations very easilly. All these advancement in science and technology, should be used to inspire the promotion of the quality of our daily life. In this new era of information and web works, we should add humanity concern into our thinking structures. God created the world. Everything can be decided by Him. Asking about how to open the file sent us by Pastor Hing-Chai Cheng, Ms. Jenny Long (Ms. Tao Long) wrote on August 23, 2006 that, "I can read all the articles and messages on your website. Maybe you will show me the file when we meet at the church." "I did click through the links on the site that you sent to me. I can open and read all the files there," wrote Jenny on August 22, 2006. In Proverbs 15 : 23 of the Bible, it stated that, "A man finds joy in giving an apt reply --- and how good is a timely word!" Jenny's enthusiastic concern and effort to WBTI have been highly appreciated.
"How do I go about contributing to your website? Must I create a new user-ID & then sign in? Cheers," asked Miss Orchid Soh by e-mail. Orchid was thanked and answered by WBTI that some writing or pictures through the e-mail to us would be highly welcomed.
To serve our brothers and sisters with article writing, WBTI used to inform them the draft and asked them for modification or comment. After the draft of an article (on 8/24/06) was informed to John, he replied with an e-mail that, "This is wonderful! Now more people will be blessed. Thank you!"
Innovation is practical for a real need. It is not a random process. "When it works, it works because someone has identified a real need, and found a way to bring new ideas or new technologies to bear on that need," said Lewis W. Lehr. An innovator's life is governed by "to create" lists. She or he is incessantly pursuing new possibilities and refinning existing ones.

The Coffee/Tea Fellowship of the four Sundays in August, 2006 were highlightened by the "to serve and to give heartily" of Lei's family: John helped promote the Sevice and Fellowship. Judy coocked the whole things of the "Chau Mien" (chau noddles) and prepared the salad. Tony has inspired the the spirit and value of the English Service and Fellowship of River of Life Christian Church through publications locally, natioally, and internationally.
Miss Vivian Chao joined Judy in preparing for the food of the Coffee/Tea Fellowship. She prepared the fruits and cakes.
Ms. Jenny Long served the food for English Service Fellowship on October 2006.
As a sincere believer of God, we found that we can even live as in the heaven in this World at the present. Whether people is living in the Heaven or in the Hell is up to his or her selection. With sincere love, you are likely to live in the Heaven. With cruel hate, you are likely live in the Hell. To fight and destroy each others for property and fame is where the place called Hell. To cooperate with each others to promote our quality of life will be the place where we people may make it as a Heaven.*10
Therefore, the Heaven is where the place full of love while the Hell is where the place full of hate. It is all depending on your heart to see whether you are in the Heaven or in the Hell. By using this standard, you may measure the quality or depth of yours in the Heaven or your in the Hell.
Accordng to the oriental (not Asian) ways of life, people would suspect the one who always find out and praise the good characters and accomplishment of others. In the many thousand years of the past, it was one of the factor that hurt the encouragement for innovation and science development for the Asian people and countries.
After a full applause by the audience at his speech, a professor automatically spoke his mind: "The people who enthusiastically give a hand to others, will certainly one day get a lot of more applauses!"
Everytime when he was encouraged and praised by an individual, Dr. Tony Lei used to remind: "The one who knows how to praise other people, is the one herself or himself having certainly lots of more goodness which are worth for us to praise for!" *11
With honor as the Assistant Democratic Leader (now the Democratic Leader) of U. S. Senate, Senator Harry Reid wrote Dr. and Mrs. Tony Tung-tien Lei on January 11, 2001 from his office in Washington, D. C.: "The holiday season is a time for remembering the good things that have happened during the year, for reflecting on the many blessings of our lives, and for renewing the bonds of love and friendship that make our lives special."
The famous political leader from Nevada continued his literary and intimate writing that, "This year has been eventful for the Reid family. So, as you can see, we have the pleasure of grandchildren in each of our frequent stops, Las Vegas, Reno and Washington."
The Bible says: "Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?" (Matthew 6:26) Take what the Senator said to Dr. Tony T. Lei in his letter that, "On behalf of Landra and our family, I want to thank you thinking of us during this holiday season. Each holiday greeting reminds us that we are truly fortunate to have so many friends and loved ones with whom to share this special time." If a humble individual like Dr. Lei may be treated so friendly by our Senator Reid, obviously everyone of us in Nevada and California would be taken care by his extended kindness. And this be our mode: "In God is our trust!"
His love to his family and his friends revealled his dignified and humane spirit through his words in the letter. For a great and powerful person like him to have such a beautiful and kind heart is really the glory of God. "Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil, cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves," says the Bible. (Romans 12:9-10) At the end of the letter, the famous U.S. Senator said that, "The Reid family has been richly blessed and we look forward to the years ahead. I hope that the season brings happiness and good fortune to you and your loved ones. With warmest regards." *12

U. S. Senator-elect John Ensign's great-grandfather first came to Nevada almost a hundred years ago as a miner and labored in its towns. He said that he was very frustrated with his first taste of political failure, when he lost by a mere 428 votes to U. S. Senator Harry Reid. However, he believes God and has surrendered his fate to God. John's faith in God helped him to overcome his frustration and disappointment and enabled him to continue to strive to succeed. The Bible says "...though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith - of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire - may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed (1 Peter 1:6-7)". If a window was closed, God might re-open the window or even open a different door for those who are eager to utilize his or her knowledge and expertise to serve. As all Christians acknowledge - with God, anything is possible.

Ms. Weber was selected to fill this position which was previously held by Nevada State Controller, Kathy Augustine, following Kathy's untimely passing away on July 11, 2006." Originally from California, Nevada Assemblywoman Valerie Weber moved to Nevada in 1990. She attained an undergraduate degree in biological science, with a specialty in the field of transfusion medicine, which earned several medical journal authorships. Valerie is a 1998 graduate of the Chamber of Commerce's Leadership Las Vegas program. She was recently appointed to the Governor's Workforce Investment Board and recently completed a four-year term on the Board of Displaced Homemakers.
Valerie is the owner of Collaborating Solutions, an organizational development company that utilizes Emotional Intelligence (ECI) in developing
leaders. An avid student of both Peter Senge of MIT and Daniel Goleman of Harvard University, she has working knowledge in business consulting.*1
As an active Assemblywoman and the Minority Whip of the Nevada Assembly, Valerie Weber also has been a professional member of the Public Administration Institution (PAI) of the Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) for ethe past five years. She also teaches at the University of Phoenix.
Ms. Weber was also recently honored as an Advisor to the International Cities Business Council (ICBC) of the Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI).*2

The Sunday School held by Mrs. Belinda M. Liu on October 15, 2006 was impressive. We had many sisters and brothers including Miss Ying-Min Huang, Mr. Yang Shao, Mrs. Judy Lei, Miss Vanessa Li, Mr. John Lei, Miss Angel Lo, Dr. Tony Lei, and among others.

In her speech to the Women Conference in the morning on September 22, 2006, Mrs. Belinda M. Liu dilivered an amazing testimony. "Two weeks ago in my Sunday School, I met with an elder and wise man (Dr. Tony Lei). He told me that WBTI (Washington Business and Technology Institute) was interested in opening a special section for me which would emphasize the educational and spiritual value. As I read his business card, praise Lord! he's the President. I was quite excited and scared. I was worry not being able to answer him appoximately. I told him that I had no formal education from a bible college. As you know I've been eager to enhance my teaching in Bible with a special website for many years. On a previous Sunday, Mr. David Whitney prayed, announced news, and introduced Mr. John Lei to present the Togo Mission through video. John spoke that, "Enthusiastic responses were shown by the people of the several villages that we visited. In one of them, we had more than thirty of them baptized. During the trip, we hsd more than 40 of them surrendered to believe God. The whole mission was very blessed. They were so joyful. Praise God! God worked with us during the mission through our glorification in His name." The video and presentation were very nice.
"We need and thank sincerely your presence and effort to join River of Life Christian Church's world missions in order to glorify our God," pointed out John.
The 2006 9/10-11/12 Sunday School was held by Mrs. Belinda M. Liu the sixth week on October 15, 2006. The subject was on the advanced part in the chapter of "Numbers" of the Bible. Many enthusiatic individuals attended the Class.*7

All these advancement in science and technology, should be used to inspire the promotion of the quality of our daily life. Asking about how to open the file sent us by Pastor Hing-Chai Cheng, Ms. Jenny Long (Ms. Tao Long) wrote on August 23, 2006 that, "I can read all the articles and messages on your website. Maybe you will show me the file when we meet at the church." "I did click through the links on the site that you sent to me. I can open and read all the files there," wrote Jenny on August 22, 2006. In Proverbs 15 : 23 of the Bible, it stated that, "A man finds joy in giving an apt reply --- and how good is a timely word!" Jenny's enthusiastic concern and effort to WBTI have been highly appreciated.

To serve our brothers and sisters with article writing, WBTI used to inform them the draft and asked them for modification or comment. After the draft of an article (on 8/24/06) was informed to John, he replied with an e-mail that, "This is wonderful! Now more people will be blessed. Thank you!"

A young, devoted follower of Socrates pleaded with him to share the secret of acquired knowledge. Socrates willingly consented and led the young man to a river. "This is how," Socrates stated as he pushed the young man into the river, and then jumping in himself, he held the young man's head underwater. The young man struggled frantically to free himself, but Socrates held him tight and kept his head submerged.
Finally, after the young man scratched, clawed, and fought with every ounce of his being, he was able to break loose and emerge from the water. Socrates then asked him, "When you thought you were drowning, what one thing did you want most of all?"

What is serendipity? It is discovering something totally unrelated to the problem you are trying to solve. Call it an accident, dumb luck, or fate--serendipity has given our world great products, new hope, and better ways of doing things.

U. S. Senator-elect John Ensign's great-grandfather first came to Nevada almost a hundred years ago as a miner and labored in its towns. As a born-again Christian, people have been inspired by his sincererity, humbleness, and credibility much more than just his wealthy and handsome appearance now. On October 15, John attended the worship service of the Liberty Baptist Church. He offered a short speech of testifmony. He said that he was very frustrated with his first taste of political failure, when he lost by a mere 428 votes to U. S. Senator Harry Reid. However, he believes God and has surrendered his fate to God. John's faith in God helped him to overcome his frustration and disappointment and enabled him to continue to strive to succeed. The Sunday School held by Mrs. Belinda M. Liu on October 8, 2006 was impressive. We had many sisters and brothers including Miss Ying-Min Huang, Mr. Yang Shao, Mrs. Judy Lei, Miss Vanessa Li, Mr. John Lei, Miss Angel Lo, Dr. Tony Lei, and among others.
"Thank you for sharing your pictures of your missions trip to Africa. We are so happy looking those wonderful faces of African people,their smiles shows the great joy that they have in the Lord. Truly, God's love is for everybody and that every tribes and every nations will praise the name of the Lord. We rejoice and greatly encourage of God's wonderful works in Africa. We are going to show this picture to our brethren here in Cambodia to let them know we are one big family in the Lord all over the world. Thanks and God Bless. In her speech to the Women Conference in the morning on September 22, 2006, Mrs. Belinda M. Liu dilivered an amazing testimony. "Two weeks ago in my Sunday School, I met with an elder and wise man (Dr. Tony Lei). He told me that WBTI (Washington Business and Technology Institute) was interested in opening a special section for me which would emphasize the educational and spiritual value. As I read his business card, praise Lord! he's the President. I was quite excited and scared. I was worry not being able to answer him appoximately. I told him that I had no formal education from a bible college. As you know I've been eager to enhance my teaching in Bible with a special website for many years. Now, an angel has been sent from God for me. Just this Monday (9/18/06), I clicked on the Section ("Belinda Liu's Spiritual World" at
http://communitylink.reviewjournal.com/lvrj/wbti) and I found a wonderful performance of my many years accomplishments with nice pictures has been implemented. Hallelujah! (The daily website is established and supported by the largest English newspaper in Nevada, Las Vegas Review-Journal). On a previous Sunday, Mr. David Whitney prayed, announced news, and introduced Mr. John Lei to present the Togo Mission through video. John spoke that, "Enthusiastic responses were shown by the people of the several villages that we visited. In one of them, we had more than thirty of them baptized. During the trip, we hsd more than 40 of them surrendered to believe God. The whole mission was very blessed. They were so joyful. Praise God! God worked with us during the mission through our glorification in His name." The video and presentation were very nice.
"We need and thank sincerely your presence and effort to join River of Life Christian Church's world missions in order to glorify our God," pointed out John.
The 2006 9/10-11/12 Sunday School was held by Mrs. Belinda M. Liu the fifth week on October 8, 2006. The subject is on the advanced part in the chapter of "Numbers" of the Bible. Many enthusiatic individuals attended the Class.*7

The Women Conference was held in Septmber 21-23, 2006 at River of Life Christian Church in Santa Clara, California. Mrs. Belinda M. Liu was one of the most important three Speakers. Moreover, because of the popular building of radio communication networks, wireless techniques may access important information from the web and condense it to be appeared on the small web connecting machines such as a hand-held screen. The open free software LINUX operating system can even connect various stations very easilly. All these advancement in science and technology, should be used to inspire the promotion of the quality of our daily life. In this new era of information and web works, we should add humanity concern into our thinking structures. God created the world. Everything can be decided by Him. As the value of the fellowship of Public Administration Institution of WBTI growing, we the people with intelligence and knowledge in administration, technology, science should enjoy a valuable and joyful life to serve our community and society with our efforts and wisdom.*13
Asking about how to open the file sent us by Pastor Hing-Chai Cheng, Ms. Jenny Long (Ms. Tao Long) wrote on August 23, 2006 that, "I can read all the articles and messages on your website. Maybe you will show me the file when we meet at the church." "I did click through the links on the site that you sent to me. I can open and read all the files there," wrote Jenny on August 22, 2006. In Proverbs 15 : 23 of the Bible, it stated that, "A man finds joy in giving an apt reply --- and how good is a timely word!" Jenny's enthusiastic concern and effort to WBTI have been highly appreciated.
"How do I go about contributing to your website? Must I create a new user-ID & then sign in? Cheers," asked Miss Orchid Soh by e-mail. Orchid was thanked and answered by WBTI that some writing or pictures through the e-mail to us would be highly welcomed.

To serve our brothers and sisters with article writing, WBTI used to inform them the draft and asked them for modification or comment. After the draft of an article (on 8/24/06) was informed to John, he replied with an e-mail that, "This is wonderful! Now more people will be blessed. Thank you!"
[[[Leadership is love --- a way to reaching a goal]]]: In our real world, people are led by leaders. A successful leader is consistently follwed by others. People follow because they have a belief in the direction, intergrity, and competence of the one leading.

I went on a search to become a leader.
I searched high and low. I spoke with authority. People listened. But alas, there was one who was wiser than I, and they follow that individual.
I sought to inspire confidence, but the crowd responded, "Why should I trust you?"
I postured, and I assumed the look of leadership with a countenance that flowed with confidence and pride. But many passed me by and never noticed my air of elegance.
I ran ahead of the others, pointed the way to new heights. I demonstrated that I knew the road to greatness. And then I looked back, and I was alone.
"What shall I do?" I queried. "I've tried hard and used all that I know." And I sat down and pondered long.
And then, I listened to the voices around me. And I heard what the group was trying to accomplish. I rolled up my sleeves and joined in the work.
As we worked, I asked, "Are we all together in what we want to do and how to get the job done?"
And we thought together, and we fought together, and we struggled towards our goal.
I found myself encouraging the fainthearted. I sought the ideas of those too shy to speak out. I taught those who had little skill. I praised those who worked hard. When our task was completed, one of the group turned to me and said, "This would not have been done but for your leadership."
At first, I said, "I didn't lead. I just worked with the rest." And then I understood, leadership is not a goal. It's a way to reaching a goal.
I lead best when I help others to go where we've decide to go. I lead best when I help others to use themselves creatively. I lead best when I forget about myself as leader and focus on my group...their needs and their goals.
To lead is to serve...to give...to achieve together.

"I have to thank my parents for never giving up on me and for all the rentless prayers that they had prayed for me. I look back and realize that it's been almost 5 years that my mom has been interceding for me," wrote Miss Frances Liu, Berlinda's daughter.*5 It is quoted from one of the prefaces of the book "��麢�ӵČ��`Ʒ��\�桹". This Sunday October 8, 2006, the Sermon was delivered by Rev. Tong Liu, Senior Pastor of River of Life Christian Church. The subject was "The Outpouring Promise of God". "For I will poure water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground." He said that we need something new. We need some innovation. As the river that flows from the Holy Place, and the beauty of holiness brings worship anew. The 2006 theme is "Arise & Shine - Prepare the Way of the Lord." On a previous Sunday, Mr. David Whitney prayed, announced news, and introduced Mr. John Lei to present the Togo Mission through video. John spoke that, "Enthusiastic responses were shown by the people of the several villages that we visited. In one of them, we had more than thirty of them baptized. During the trip, we hsd more than 40 of them surrendered to believe God. The whole mission was very blessed. They were so joyful. Praise God! God worked with us during the mission through our glorification in His name." The video and presentation were very nice.

All these advancement in science and technology, should be used to inspire the promotion of the quality of our daily life. In this new era of information and web works, we should add humanity concern into our thinking structures. God created the world. Everything can be decided by Him. To serve our brothers and sisters with article writing, WBTI used to inform them the draft and asked them for modification or comment. After the draft of an article (on 8/24/06) was informed to John, he replied with an e-mail that, "This is wonderful! Now more people will be blessed. Thank you!"
Innovation is practical for a real need. It is not a random process. "When it works, it works because someone has identified a real need, and found a way to bring new ideas or new technologies to bear on that need," said Lewis W. Lehr. An innovator's life is governed by "to create" lists. She or he is incessantly pursuing new possibilities and refinning existing ones.

The Coffee/Tea Fellowship of the four Sundays in August, 2006 were highlightened by the "to serve and to give heartily" of Lei's family: John helped promote the Sevice and Fellowship. Judy coocked the whole things of the "Chau Mien" (chau noddles) and prepared the salad. Tony has inspired the the spirit and value of the English Service and Fellowship of River of Life Christian Church through publications locally, natioally, and internationally.
Miss Vivian Chao joined Judy in preparing for the food of the Coffee/Tea Fellowship. She prepared the fruits and cakes.
Ms. Jenny Long served the food for English Service Fellowship on October 2006.
As a sincere believer of God, we found that we can even live as in the heaven in this World at the present. Whether people is living in the Heaven or in the Hell is up to his or her selection. With sincere love, you are likely to live in the Heaven. With cruel hate, you are likely live in the Hell. To fight and destroy each others for property and fame is where the place called Hell. To cooperate with each others to promote our quality of life will be the place where we people may make it as a Heaven.*10
Therfore, the Heaven is where the place full of love while the Hell is where the place full of hate. It is all depending on your heart to see whether you are in the Heaven or in the Hell. By using this standard, you may measure the quality or depth of yours in the Heaven or your in the Hell.
Accordng to the oriental (not Asian) ways of life, people would suspect the one who always find out and praise the good characters and accomplishment of others. In the many thousand years of the past, it was one of the factor that hurt the encouragement for innovation and science development for the Asian people and countries.
After a full applause by the audience at his speech, a professor automatically spoke his mind: "The people who enthusiastically give a hand to others, will certainly one day get a lot of more applauses!"
Everytime when he was encouraged and praised by an individual, Dr. Tony Lei used to remind: "The one who knows how to praise other people, is the one herself or himself having certainly lots of more goodness which are worth for us to praise for!" *11
With honor as the Assistant Democratic Leader (now the Democratic Leader) of U. S. Senate, Senator Harry Reid wrote Dr. and Mrs. Tony Tung-tien Lei on January 11, 2001 from his office in Washington, D. C.: "The holiday season is a time for remembering the good things that have happened during the year, for reflecting on the many blessings of our lives, and for renewing the bonds of love and friendship that make our lives special."
The famous political leader from Nevada continued his literary and intimate writing that, "This year has been eventful for the Reid family. So, as you can see, we have the pleasure of grandchildren in each of our frequent stops, Las Vegas, Reno and Washington."
The Bible says: "Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?" (Matthew 6:26) Take what the Senator said to Dr. Tony T. Lei in his letter that, "On behalf of Landra and our family, I want to thank you thinking of us during this holiday season. Each holiday greeting reminds us that we are truly fortunate to have so many friends and loved ones with whom to share this special time." If a humble individual like Dr. Lei may be treated so friendly by our Senator Reid, obviously everyone of us in Nevada and California would be taken care by his extended kindness. And this be our mode: "In God is our trust!"
His love to his family and his friends revealled his dignified and humane spirit through his words in the letter. For a great and powerful person like him to have such a beautiful and kind heart is really the glory of God. "Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil, cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves," says the Bible. (Romans 12:9-10) At the end of the letter, the famous U.S. Senator said that, "The Reid family has been richly blessed and we look forward to the years ahead. I hope that the season brings happiness and good fortune to you and your loved ones. With warmest regards." *12

U. S. Senator-elect John Ensign's great-grandfather first came to Nevada almost a hundred years ago as a miner and labored in its towns. This respectable man worked hard to provide for his family and taught his children the value of hard work, integrity, and independence. "The significance of life is to inspire and educate the continuous lives of the universe," said Dr. Tony Lei, President of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI). People came to America to seek the American dream. Even though not all of them can realize their American dream, eventually they could teach and help their children accomplish their contributions to our country.*15
As a born-again Christian, people have been inspired by his sincererity, humbleness, and credibility much more than just his wealthy and handsome appearance now. On October 15, John attended the worship service of the Liberty Baptist Church. He offered a short speech of testifmony. He said that he was very frustrated with his first taste of political failure, when he lost by a mere 428 votes to U. S. Senator Harry Reid. However, he believes God and has surrendered his fate to God. John's faith in God helped him to overcome his frustration and disappointment and enabled him to continue to strive to succeed. The Bible says "...though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith - of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire - may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed (1 Peter 1:6-7)". If a window was closed, God might re-open the window or even open a different door for those who are eager to utilize his or her knowledge and expertise to serve. As all Christians acknowledge - with God, anything is possible.
As a famous U. S. Senator of Nevada, John Ensign has been Advisor and vice Chairman of the Advisory Board of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) since 2000.

Meet Nancy Becker, Fellow of the PAI of WBTI

Who was the most respectful person in judicial affair of the best judgment and righteous in Chinese history by novel and drama? Who was the greatest Judge of righteousness respected and loved by all the people in Chinese literature and show? Both of them was Boa Ching Tien. Who is "Boa Chin Tien" of Nevada favored by so many people? She is our Justice Nancy Becker!*1
Justice Nancy Becker received her Juris Doctor degree from George Washington University National Law Center in 1979. She received her B. A. degree with a major of International Relations from United States International University, San Diego, CA. in 1976. She ranked No. 1 in the graduating class.*2
Nancy Becker is now the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nevada. On May 2, 2000, Nancy Becker was named Fellow of Public Administration Institution (PAI) of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) by President Dr. Tony Tung-tien Lei of WBTI.*3
Nancy is the recipient of numerous honors including the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce Woman of Achievement Award, Jurist of the Year Award, the Liberty Bell Award from the American Bar Association, J.C. Penny Golden Rule Award and recognized as one of the top ten businesswomen in the Nation from the American Businesswomen's Association. She received Distinguished Service Award from Nevada District Judges' Association in 1997. She was Distinguished Woman of Southern Nevada, 1990, 1995, 1997, 1998,and 1999. "It is our honor to invite a famous person of Justice Nancy Becker's excellent caliber whose expertise, integrity, and good personal traits will bring to this Institute with a perspective of millennium," said President Dr. Tony Lei of WBTI. "Throughout her distinguished career, she has accomplished a great deal of judicial practices together with social services and has earned a good reputation of conscientious and dedicated professionalism."
In 1985, Nancy was appointed by the Clark County Bar Association to be the president of a new program that helped people with family problems cope with the justice system. The Clark County Pro Bono Project is a nonprofit organization that provides legal assistance to people with domestic cases. She served in that capacity for ten years and during her presidency the organization helped close to 50,000 people and provided millions in free legal services.
She was elected to the Las Vegas Municipal Court in 1987. That was a history to make her the first woman to serve as a Municipal Judge. In her capacity, Nancy continued to work hard for the improvement of the justice system. While maintaining the impartiality required by the Code of Judicial Conduct, she again worked closely with the Legislature to expand the powers of local judges to combat DUI's and domestic violence.
She earned a fame for being a tough, but fair judge. Using common sense, compassion and commitment to tackle the growing caseload in the municipal court gained her the respect of law enforcement and the legal community. As a result of her efforts, Governor Robert Miller appointed her to the District Court bench in 1989. She was the first woman to be so honored. For ten years, she served with distinction as District Court Judge. She continually received high marks for her performance with a 90% approval rating. Judicial evaluations placed her as one of the top judges of that court.*4
"Justice Nancy Becker has been very happy that she was invited by Dr. and Mrs. Tony Lei for a dinner party at the Center Stage Restaurant of Plaza Casino and Hotel in congratulating her birthday (5/23) and appointment (5/02) on May 22, 2000. The Faculty of WBTI joined President Dr. Tony Lei to welcome Justice Becker being one of our famous fellows at PAI with the bright leadership of its Director and Fellow Dr. William Thompson who is the chair and professor of the Department of Public Administration of UNLV. Following the appointment of a famous professor from Pepperdine University Dr. Roy Adamson as the Fellow of PAI on March 3, 2000, Justice Becker was the third person and first lady who had been honored with such a reputable prestige," reported the Nevada Examiner.*5
WBTI has been founded since January 8, 1996, dedicated to: (1) Inviting achieved and excellent faculty members, (2) Motivating special research projects, and (3) Encouraging good community services. Governor of Nevada Dr. Kenny Guinn is Chairman of the Advisory Board. U. S. Senators Honorable Harry Reid and Honorable John Ensign are Vice Chairmen of the Board. U. S. Representatives Honorable James Gibbons and Honorable Shelley Berkley are Executive Directors.*6
"Public Administration Institution (PAI) of WBTI has played the role as a private NPO (Non Profit Organization) to promote the study and reseach of public administration and strategy for social and public profit. With the effort of the Faculty and under the brilliant leadership of Dr. Tony Lei, WBTI has accomplished a valueable contribution to the academic research and community service for Nevada. We share a great deal of honor also as what Justice Becker does for her prestige as a PAI Fellow. Her participation to this Institution will enrich and enhance its academic production featured with practicality and adaptability as an efficient "intelligence Tank" through her excellent and fruitful public administration experience and contribution," said the President of Seniors United, Lillian Wallace.
In paying a special tribute to Nancy Becker, Dr. Tony Lei had Dr. Peter Lok in charge of the coordinating of an Asian Dinner Party for the event. Dr. Lok is famous as our "King of Coordinating" for Dinner Party. The Functions were: (1) A special tribute to Nancy Becker, Justice of the Supreme Court. (2) An induction of the faculty members of Public Administration Institution of WBTI. The Keynote Speaker was Nancy Becker. Special Guests were : Dr. William Thompson, UNLV Prefesoor of Public Administration, Dr. Roy Adamson, Emeritus Professor of Pepperdine University (represented by Miss Iris Zhang); Terry Care, Nevada Senator; Mark Denton and Valorie Vega, District Judges; Lisa Brown and Cheryl Moss, District Judges (Family Court); Lynette McDonald, Las Vegas Ciy Councilwoman; Michelle Leavitt-fitzpatrick,Cedric Kerns, Jessie Walsh, Ann Zimmerman, and Betsy Kolkoski, Las Vegas Municipal Court Judges; and Natalie Tyrrell, North Las Vegas Justice Court Judge.*7
The Dinner Party was held by WBTI and Asian American communities at the Harbor Palace Seafood Restaurant on May 23, 2001 in Las Vegas. President Dr. Tony Tung-tien Lei of Washington Business and Technology Institute was the Chairman. The Party was successful with a great deal of attendants about 300 such as high-ranking officials, business owners, community leaders, and multimedia executives.
"I truly appreciate your efforts on my behalf and your commitment to bring 100 people to the event at Cashman field on March 26th. It is only with the dedication and commitment of good people like youself that I will achieve my goal of becoming Governor of this great state. Dema and I can't thank you enough for your assistance and your positive activities in the community," wrote Governor Kenny C. Guinn to Dr. Tony Lei on March 6, 1998.*8
Director Bud Cranor of the Las Vegas Office of Nevada Governor presented the Distinguished Achievement Award from Governor Kenny C. Guinn to Dr. Tony Tung-tien Lei in honoring his contribution for enriching the lives of many in our community.
