July 4th and PatriotismThursday, July 3, 2008 12:34 PM
From: "S.B.Woo" Add sender to Contacts To: tojulei@yahoo.com

On July 4th, we celebrate the blessings of liberty which we enjoy as
Americans. Let's all display a flag, shall we?

Patriotism is "love and devotion to country. The questions are how we
love it and how we express our devotion."

There is a great article in Time magazine by Peter Beinart on patriotism
(July 7 issue). I can't do it justice by summarizing it. Nevertheless, I'll try
with the aim to entice you to read the article itself. He wrote and I
paraphrase liberally:

American patriotism wears tow faces. Conservatives prefer the
patriotism of affirmation. Liberals choose the patriotism of dissent.
Conservatives think that being born into a nation is like being born into
a family. You love it because it is yours. Liberals think patriotism is a
struggle to narrow the gap between American ideals and America's
reality. To conservatives, the devotion to America must come first,
struggle to improve it is secondary. To liberals, America must earn our
devotion by making good on its ideals.

Both brands of patriotism have defects. Celebrating America too
unabashedly risks becoming self-righteous and turn patriotism into
nationalism. However, loving America purely because of its ideals could
lead to switching allegiance to other nations too easily.

America needs a mixture of both brands, because love of country
requires both affirmation and criticism.

Many Asian Americans are personal embodiments of this ideal
mix. We give America our primary allegiance*. At the same time, we are
engaged in a great struggle prodding America to fulfill its core value --
equal opportunity for all Americans.

Please display a flag. July 4th is affirmation time.
Commets are welcome at
http://www.80-20educationalfoundation.org/politicaledu/posterboard.asp

Warmest regards,

S. B. Woo
President, 80-20 Educational Foundation, Inc.

* What if a naturalized citizen still has strong feelings for his/her old
country? That is quite OK, so long as he/she gives first allegiance to
America. America is a great and wise nation. It knows that people who
can forget their old country over one naturalization ceremony could easily
forget America the next moment.

<<< An e-mail from Dr. Dina Titus to WBTI. >>>
July 3, 2008

Dear Tony,

Tomorrow on July 4th we will celebrate our nation~{!/~}s birthday with fireworks, parades, and barbeques. It is a day for rejoicing and remembering. It is a time to put aside partisan politics and begin to work together to turn this country in a new direction, so every child can attain his/her god given potential, seniors can get the medicine they need, our fighting men and women can come home from Iraq and Afghanistan, and working families can afford to buy gas and groceries without worrying about losing their homes.

To celebrate, our team will be marching in the Boulder City Damboree Parade and attending events across the valley. Come join us or let us know where you and your family will be and we~{!/~}ll try to stop by.

I want to thank you again for your generous support of this campaign. With your help we have reached our goal and will be turning in a strong financial report, showing how much can be accomplished in a short time when people desperately want change.

Tonight I will be appearing on the 9:00 news with Jeff Gillan of Las Vegas One. Stay Tuned.

Finally, we are looking for people to host house parties. If you or someone you know would like to host a party in the district, please let us know.

Thank you for everything; I~{!/~}ll talk to you soon.

Happy Fourth of July!

Dina

Fw: An incredible love story

An incredible love story has come out of China recently and managed to touch the world.

It is a story of a man and an older woman who ran off to live and love each other in peace for over half a century.

The 70-year-old Chinese man who hand-carved over 6,000 stairs up a mountain for his 80-year-old wife has passed away in the cave which has been the couple's home for the last 50 years.

Over 50 years ago, Liu Guojiang a 19 year-old boy, fell in love with a 29 year-old widowed mother named Xu Chaoqin..

In a twist worthy of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, friends and relatives criticized the relationship because of the age difference and the fact that Xu already had children.

At that time, it was unacceptable and immoral for a young man to love an older woman.. To avoid the market gossip and the scorn of their communities, the couple decided to elope and lived in a cave in Jiangjin County in Southern ChongQing Municipality.

In the beginning, life was harsh as hey had nothing, no electricity or even food. They had to eat grass and roots they found in the mountain, and Liu made a kerosene lamp that they used to light up their lives.

Xu felt that she had tied Liu down and repeatedly asked him, 'Are you regretful? Liu always replied, 'As long as we are industrious, life will improve.'

In the second year of living in the mountain, Liu began and continued for over 50 years, to hand-carve the steps so that his wife could get down the mountain easily.
Half a century later in 2001, a group of adventurers were exploring the forest and were surprised to find the elderly couple and the over 6,000 hand-carved steps. Liu MingSheng, one of their seven children said, 'My parents loved each other so much, they have lived in seclusion for over 50 years and never been apart a single day. He hand carved more than 6,000 steps over the years for my mother's convenience, although she doesn't go down the mountain that much.'

The couple had lived in peace for over 50 years until last week. Liu, now 72 years, returned from his daily farm work and collapsed. Xu sat and prayed with her husband as he passed away in her arms. So in love with Xu, was Liu, that no one was able to release the grip he had on his wife's hand even after he had passed away.

'You promised me you'll take care of me, you'll always be with me until the day I died, now you left before me, how am I going to live without you?'

Xu spent days softly repeating this sentence and touching her husband's black coffin with tears rolling down her cheeks.
In 2006, their story became one of the top 10 love stories from China , collected by the Chinese Women Weekly. The local government has decided to preserve the love ladder and the place they lived as a museum, so this love story can live forever.

Once you send the message, press F6 and you will see what appear .... unbelievable but true .....

Send this to at least 15 pe ople , and then press F6 ; the name of the person you love will appear...

615 N. Santa Cruz Ave., Los Gatos.

Addressing High Gas Prices

Skyrocketing gas and energy prices are hurting Nevada抯 working families. That抯 why I am pushing Congress to pass legislation to address the root causes of the problem and reduce the burden on consumers and the economy. Excessive speculation on Wall Street and around the world has helped drive dramatic increases in oil and energy prices. The bill I introduced would curb speculation, go after OPEC for collusion, and convince the oil companies to start investing their huge profits in clean, affordable alternatives like wind, solar and geothermal energy to power our economy. I've forced votes at least five times this year on legislation to help restrain energy prices and help the consumers. For those who say we should drill more at home, I believe the oil companies should start using the 68 million acres of onshore and off-shore leases they already own, before asking for more land. But let me be clear, we can't simply drill our way to lower prices or to real energy independence because America has less than 3% of the world's oil supplies and uses more than 25% of its production. That is why we must increase our investment in renewable energy sources like the ones that are so abundant in Nevada.*3

Fighting for Nevada抯 Homeowners

Nevada has been hit harder than any other state by the national foreclosure crisis, which is why I am working to ensure that the Senate passes legislation to help our homeowners. The Senate Housing Bill gives first time homebuyers an $8,000 tax-credit, and requires mortgage lenders to be up-front with homeowners about potential maximum payments. We also created a new program under the Federal Housing Authority that allows people to move from adjustable- to fixed-rate mortgages. I am proud of this bipartisan legislation and am confident that it will pass the Senate soon and help thousands of Nevadans.

Keeping Medicare Working for Nevada抯 Doctors and Patients

Yesterday, we made history. The Senate passed a bill, by a veto-proof, bipartisan majority, to halt the 10.6% cut in payments to physicians under Medicare. This will protect not only our seniors and people with disabilities, but also our veterans and military families who use TRICARE ?more than 350,000 Nevadans in all. The legislation provides key improvements for beneficiaries, including reducing out of pocket costs for seniors seeking mental health care ?a provision I have introduced and long fought to enact. This was good, bipartisan legislation ?a true compromise ?and I am so pleased we are going to get this relief out to our providers and beneficiaries.

But he still lives in Searchlight … and he is still guided by the lessons and values he learned there.
The Las Vegas Sun newspaper summarized Reid’s story by saying that he 鉮as gone from underdog to Senate’s top dog. ?Parade Magazine, the nation’s largest weekly magazine, identified Senator Reid as one of a handful of leaders in Washington with 鉯ntegrity and guts. ?
Since Nevadans elected him to the Senate in 1986, Harry Reid has developed a reputation as a consensus builder and a skillful legislator. Even his Republican colleagues praise his reasoned, balanced approach.
Senate Judiciary Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) has said, 鉝e all respect Senator Reid. He is one of the moderate voices around here who tries to get things to work. ?
And former GOP Leader Trent Lott said, 鉎arry Reid is out there finding a solution. I enjoy working with him very much. ?
He was elected to the Senate in 1986, and re-elected in 1992, 1998 and 2004. He has served as the chairman or senior Democratic member on several important committees and subcommittees.

That is why we must increase our investment in renewable energy sources like the ones that are so abundant in Nevada.*2

Reid is a tireless worker, and it isn’t unusual for him to be the first Senator of either party to arrive at the Capitol in the morning and the last to go home at night.

Obama dismisses conservative criticism
By LIZ SIDOTI
Associated Press Writer

((Obama accepts Jackson's apology for crude remark))

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) -- Democrat Barack Obama batted away conservative criticism Friday over a comment he made about Americans' lack of foreign language skills.

"The Republicans jumped on this. I said, absolutely immigrants need to learn English, but we also need to learn foreign languages," the likely Democratic nominee said as the 1,000-plus crowd in a school gymnasium cheered. It's a position he long has held.

"This is an example of some of the problems we get into when somebody attacks you for saying the truth, which is: We should want our children with more knowledge. We should want our children to have more skills. There's nothing wrong with that. That's a good thing. I know, because I don't speak a foreign language. It's embarrassing," Obama said chuckling as his audience did the same.

At issue was a remark the Illinois senator made Monday in Powder Springs, Ga., that drew laughter from the crowd - but disdain from conservatives and groups advocating English as the official U.S. language. His remark has caused buzz on the Internet and talk radio.

The Americans for Legal Immigration PAC said in a statement, "Barack Obama has stepped on a political land mine by stating Americans should be forced to learn to speak Spanish." But that's not what Obama said.

Obama was answering a question on education when he said he doesn't understand people who say "we need English only."

"I agree that immigrants should learn English," Obama said. "But instead of worrying about whether immigrants can learn English - they'll learn English - you need to make sure your child can speak Spanish. You should be thinking about how can your child become bilingual. We should have every child speaking more than one language."

He argued that the country should be emphasizing foreign language study in classrooms.

"You know, it's embarrassing when Europeans come over here, they all speak English, they speak French, they speak German. And then we go over to Europe and all we can say is 'merci beaucoup!'" Obama said, laughing.

Dear Tony,

I'd like to welcome you to the "We Campaign", which is an extension of the work we've been doing together at AlGore.com. You will receive emails, like the one below, with important actions, which I encourage you to participate in. I hope you will continue to add your energy and your voice to this vital movement.*102

Only by working together will we be able to solve the climate crisis.

Sincerely,

Al Gore

This is silly. Once again, we're being held hostage by the big energy companies, and we're paying for it at the pump. Some people think more drilling is going to help, but that sort of flawed thinking is what got us into this mess to begin with. Instead of prolonging our addiction to oil, we need to look beyond fossil fuels and invest in new solutions. It's time to get real about our energy options.

Why remain captive to skyrocketing fuel prices when we can develop an economy based on efficient transportation and clean, free sources of energy (like the sun and wind)?

The We Campaign is about coming together to demand the smart, dependable and reasonably priced energy that we deserve. Energy that will strengthen the economy and stop global warming. Click here to help break our addiction to fossil fuels.

We are a great country -- with fantastic resources -- and we will not be held hostage by dirty energy companies.

Be a voice for real solutions today.*103

Sincerely,

Cathy Zoi
