Chen's graft charges stun democratic Taiwan
By ANNIE HUANG
The Associated Press
Saturday, December 13, 2008; 12:19 AM

"Businesspeople rushed to deliver expensive jewelry and cardboard boxes stuffed with cash to the tree-canopied mansion of Taiwan's top leader to secure valuable political favors. Topflight chefs prepared exotic dishes to tempt the palate _ and win the allegiance _ of his wheelchair-bound wife," posted the WashingtonPost.com early morning on December 13, 2008 in
TAIPEI, Taiwan.*101 "Those are some of the allegations emerging from a monthslong corruption probe into the activities of former Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian. While the probe is still continuing, it reached a climax of sorts Friday when prosecutors indicted the 57-year-old Chen on charges of embezzlement and laundering ill-gotten bribes. Chen's wife, together with 13 other family members and close associates, were also indicted in the case."

"The depth of the charges against Chen stunned ordinary Taiwanese, who believed their rapidly evolving democracy had finally put an end to decades of endemic political corruption. The 100-page indictment catalogued a litany of alleged offenses and shed new light on Chen's apparent taste for the high life. The son of a poor farmer from southern Taiwan, he was first elected president in 2000, riding to victory on the coattails of his clean-cut image and insistent pledges to clean up Taiwan's politics." Reporter ... continued.*102 "Appearing in court late Friday, Chen reaffirmed his innocence, claiming the $21 million his wife wired to their son's Swiss bank accounts came from leftover campaign donations. Taiwanese law permits such donations to be kept by political candidates. But that account failed to convince prosecutors, who accused Chen of "showing no remorse after committing severe crimes." Wife Wu Shu-Chen, they said, had "blatantly interfered in politics and corrupted government practice." '

///////
Prosecutors say Chen and his wife together embezzled 104 million New Taiwan dollars ($3.12 million) from a special presidential fund, and received bribes of $11.73 million in connection with a government land procurement deal and a separate construction project.

Prosecutor Lin Che-hui said that a particularly damning piece of evidence was the presence of NT$740 million ($22.2 million) in cash stashed in a Taipei bank safety vault held by the Chens.

"No one would keep such a huge amount of cash if it was obtained legally," Lin told reporters Friday. "No one would use such complex, illegal means to (launder money) and cover up the identities of the owners."

After filing their indictment, Lin and his colleagues revealed they will pursue further charges against the former first couple based on a series of allegations submitted by former allies and business associates of the Chens.

After being questioned by prosecutors last month, at least two Taiwanese financial executives admitted they delivered cash to Chen's residence or deposited money into his family's overseas accounts.

Through her lawyer, Tu Li-ping, a director of Yuanta Securities, told reporters that she hand delivered NT$200 million ($6 million) in cash to Wu at the presidential residence in 2006 on behalf of executives of an affiliated bank. She said the money was an incentive for Wu not to interfere with a merger the bank was pursuing.

Taiwanese TV stations also reported that several leading businesspeople used expensive gifts and exotic food items to win favors from the former first lady.

Celebrated chef Yuan Wei-hung told the stations that he prepared special dishes, such as braised sea cucumbers and turtle soup, for home delivery by business executives to Wu.

Following the indictment, local media repeatedly reran Chen's earlier assertions that he cared little about money and was only concerned about the public interest.

But analysts say the prosecutors' evidence appears to indicate otherwise.

"This is a case of how power corrupts a man," said political commentator Yang Hsien-hong. "Chen used his power to amass wealth, and hoped to buy a political comeback with the wealth he amassed."

The Sun is shinning this morning! Both Obama and McCain are the winner and achiever of Success in our Presidential election 2008 for our Country's Distinguished History. This is the great country in our World with a precious property of 'Freedom, Democracy, Entreprenuership, and Judiciary'. It has drawn the people from most of countries all around the world to pursue and journey a happier and richer village of the Earth in America!

"For the effort, diligence, and effectiveness to our country in the History, we are all humbly the contributors of this accomplishment. We'll all win through faith and perseverance as the Americans in America for a happy and prosperous country with the righteousness of union!" *1 "Success is a happy thing. Achievement is even more important. To emphazise both the ones who are in authority and who are with influence will probably a practice for the motto of 'United We Stand!' -- to be not just a dream!"

OBAMA, Barack, a Senator from Illinois; born in Honolulu, Hawaii, August 4, 1961; obtained early education in Jakarta, Indonesia, and Hawaii; continued education at Occidental College, Los Angeles, Calif.; received a B.A. in 1983 from Columbia University, New York City; worked as a community organizer in Chicago, Ill.; studied law at Harvard University, where he became the first African American president of the Harvard Law Review, and received J.D. in 1991," posts the Biographical Directory of the United States Congress.*797 "Obama, Barack. The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream. New York: Crown Publishers, 2006."
U. S. Senator Barack Obama has been one of the Distinguished Authors of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI).
WBTI's suggestion was, "John F. Kennedy won the presidential election with his outstanding performance by TV. The time now is the era of Internet and Search Engine Giants are marching on the road of Innovative Marketing!" The rising Senator Barack Obama, US Presidential Candidate, is one of the Distinguished Authors with outstanding work performance in writing, inspiring, and learning.

The feature articles written by Barack Obama in the PPAA Forum of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) have been enhanced by the world's leading search engines on Internet for positive and effective publicity promptly. His slogans and missions for election have been initiated, innovated, and refined by the efforts of his Campaign and WBTI interchangingly and mutually.

With Modern Stratagem, highlighted by the "$5 Modern Stratagem", which was invented and refined by WBTI thorugh the theory and practice of Dr. Peter F. Drucker's Innovative Marketing, Barack has set up a sound foundation in winning. The significance of Barack Obama's local, national, and international visibily and popularlity has then enhanced by the brilliance of world's leading search engines on Internet all the way until his final winning as President-elect of the United States of America in January 5, 2008.

The U.S. Election 2008 has won a positive and historic record for the maximum population of people no matter of what differences in America or in many places arround the world that interested, participated or learned the event and education.

The Faculty and Advisory Board members of WBTI together with its President Dr. Tony T. Lei thanks hearfeltly and humbly for the opportunity given by Barack to learn and practise one of its missions for community service in this recent two years. We think and act; we act and think; and therefore together we are. This is only a journey on our accomplishment. We have still at least one weakness to overcome as Dr. Dina Titus reminded, "We searched for knowledge, for service, but not for money." For Barack, for Entrepreneurship with Innovation, and most importantly for the people, we should learn to be more humble, diligent, and efficient with improvement and positive change!

[[[[[ Vision and enthusiasm
By Tiffany Chang

The willingness to create
a new vision
is a statement of your belief
in your potential.

---David McNally

____________________________________________
***** Carl Schutz told us, "Ideals are like stars. You will not succeed in touching them with your hands. But like the seafaring man on the desert of waters, you choose them as your guides and following them you will reach your destiny." It is our pleasure to inspire the significance of the idea, "The world of tomorrow belongs to the person who has the vision today," which was stated by Robert Schuller. Having good vision with practice and diligency, we will bring it together with us to help promote a peaceful, happy, and healthy community.*1

"Vision seems to be an elusive yet import life principle. Your vision describes the ideal future for you to attain. It provides meaning and direction while forcing you to break through present limitations. Holding a clear picture in your mind of the desired future will mobilize your creative efforts and generate the desire and energy to perform," edited Glenn Ekeren in his book.*2

Vision may develop its power to direct what tommorrow will look like. Vision is having an acute sense of the possible. The thing what others can not see, it can be seen by vision. Something extraordinary will occur when those with similar visions are drawn together. The goal of John F. Kennedy set in 1960 to place a man on the moon by 1970 drew many million people's efforts in achieving the dream. John had the vision. The result is now history with reality.

"John F. Kennedy was a living example of Mitchell Kapor's belief that, 'If you can genuinely present a picture that makes sense to people, that unifies the seemingly disperate elements of their experience, if you can give people something they can resonate with because it's meaningful, then they'll be immensely responsive to it.' JFK presented that picture and America responded." *3

Enthusiasm is important, especially very important to many things in our lives.*4 We need to push our valuable vision through enthusiasm. We are pleased to quote the following three short but meaningful ones:

***** There is nothing greater than enthusiasm. ---Henry Moore
***** If you don't have enthusiasm, you don't have anything. ---Kemmons Wilson, Sr.
***** Nothing good or great can be done in the absence of enthusiasm. ---Tom Peters

It's our pleasure to post a short story from "Speaker's Source Book II" by Glenn Van Ekeren:

The word enthusiasm comes from the Greek roots en and theos and means "God within." It is a fire, a passion within. Real enthusiasm is not something you "put on" and "take off " to fit the occasion. It is a way of life.
Apparently Theodore Roosevelt possessed that kind of passionate lifestyle. In 1883, according to Bernard Levin, writing in Enthusiasms (Crown Publishers), Roosevelt went buffalo hunting in the Badlands of South Dakota with a single companion, Joe Ferris. They nearly died of thirst, and they slept on the ground, saddles their only pillows. One night wolves caused their horses to bolt, and it took some time for the
fleeing beasts to be recaptured. The men went back to sleep; it began to rain heavily and they awoke, finding themselves lying in four inches of water. Shivering between sodden blankets, Ferris heard Teddy Roosevelt exclaim, "By Godfrey, but this is fun!"
Now that's enthusiasm! *5

We are quite inspired by the words of wisdom as said by Alan Loy McGinnis that, "There is no more noble occupation in the world than to assist another human being--to help someone succeed." Vision with enthusiasm may bring us with hope to serve our people, community, and country! *6

"It's my great honor to be named by President Dr. Tony T. Lei as a Fellow of the Public Administration Institution (PAI) and an Honorary Chairman of the Clark County District and Police Civil Commission (CCDAPCC) of Washington Business and Technolgy Institute (WBTI)," pointed out the Chief Justice of Nevada Supreme Court William Maupin at the Celebration Party to "Nevada Examiner" and "Communitylink of Reviewjournal.com" at the Steak House of Binion's Horseshoe Club, Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S.A. on October 10, 2002. The Party was held by WBTI to celebrate William Maupin's being appointed as its Fellow of the Public Administration Institution (PAI) and as its Honorary Chairman of the Clark County District Attorney and Police Civil Commission (CCDAPCC).*7 "Please know that I irrevocably stand by my personal commitment to diversity issues in this state and that my sense of patriotism and faith in America stems from its embrace of that diversity." ]]]]] *3

***** "What would life be if we had no courage to attemp anything." ---Vincent Van Gogh

***** "If a window of opportunity appears, don't pull down the shade." ---Tom Peters

***** "If you can find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn't lead anywhere." ---Frank A. Clark

Obama calls for swift action on economy
By NEDRA PICKLER and LIZ SIDOTI
Associated Press Writers

CHICAGO (AP) -- President-elect Obama assembled his economic team Friday and soberly told the nation that strong action is needed to confront "the greatest economic challenge of our lifetime."

In his first news conference since being elected Tuesday, Obama called on Congress to extend unemployment benefits and pass a stimulus bill. But his more ambitious remedies, he said, must wait until he takes office Jan. 20.

Obama displayed an air of authority and confidence, standing before a dozen economic advisers and rows of American flags as he spoke for 20 minutes. He mixed lighthearted remarks about family pets (even calling himself a "mutt") with grim-faced assessments of the nation's economic predicament.

<<< ' "Some of the choices that we make are going to be difficult," he said, reading a statement before taking several questions.' *336 ' "It is not going to be easy for us to dig ourselves out of the hole that we are in. But America is a strong and resilient country." ' >>> *376

Obama urged Congress to pass an economic stimulus measure and extend unemployment benefits either before or just after he takes office. As for bigger decisions, he said, the nation has "only one government and one president at a time," and now it is President Bush.

However, he said, "immediately after I become president, I will confront this economic crisis head-on by taking all necessary steps to ease the credit crisis, help hardworking families, and restore growth and prosperity."

"I'm confident a new president can have an enormous impact," he said.

Obama said he would focus on producing jobs, and he mentioned actions to help the auto industry, small businesses and state and local governments.

He left open the possibility that economic conditions might prompt him to change his tax plan, which would give a break to most families but raise taxes on those making more than $250,000 annually.

"I think that the plan that we've put forward is the right one," he said, "but, obviously, over the next several weeks and months, we're going to be continuing to take a look at the data and see what's taking place in the economy as a whole."

Obama said he will review a congratulatory letter from Iran's leader and respond appropriately. It's not something "that we should simply do in a knee-jerk fashion," he said. Obama said he wants to be careful to send the signal to the world that "I'm not the president and I won't be until Jan. 20."

He said he appreciated the cooperation Bush has offered in smoothing his transition to the White House and the president's "commitment that his economic policy team keep us informed." He expressed gratitude to Bush for inviting him and his wife, Michelle, to the White House on Monday.

Obama said he expected to have a substantive conversation with Bush. "I am not going to anticipate problems," he said.

As he prepares to join an exclusive club of presidents, Obama said, "I've spoken to all of them that are living."

"I didn't want to get into a Nancy Reagan thing about, you know, doing any seances," he said with a grin, an apparent exaggerated reference to the former first lady's fondness for astrology.

Also in a lighter vein, the president-elect said his family is looking for a dog that will not trigger his daughter Malia's allergies. Ideally, he said, it would come from an animal rescue shelter, "but obviously, a lot of shelter dogs are mutts like me."

He presumably was referring to his heritage: his father was from Kenya, his mother was from Kansas.

Obama and Biden met before the news conference with the transition economic advisory board, a high-powered collection of business, academic and government leaders. They included Lawrence Summers, who some have mentioned as a candidate for Treasury secretary, a post he held in the Clinton administration; Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, whose state has been hit hard by losses in the auto industry; Google CEO Eric Schmidt; and former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker.

Others attending included executives from Xerox Corp., Time Warner Inc.; and the Hyatt hotel company. Investor Warren Buffett called in by telephone.

Obama has been meeting privately with his transition team, receiving congratulatory phone calls from foreign leaders and intelligence briefings, and making decisions about who will help run his government.

One person frequently mentioned for a Cabinet post, Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, will not be available until 2011, officials close to him said Friday. Rendell has two years left of his term, and Lt. Gov. Catherine Baker Knoll, a Democrat, is ailing. Next in line to be governor is the Republican president pro tempore the state Senate.

Rather than take the chance that the GOP would gain control of the governor's office, Rendell has signaled he will stay put for the time being.

On Friday morning, Obama and his wife, Michelle, attended a parent-teacher conference at the University of Chicago Lab School where their daughters, Malia and Sasha, are students.

Obama planned to stay home through the weekend, with a blackout on news announcements so he and his staff can rest after the grueling campaign. He is planning a family getaway to Hawaii in December before they move to the White House, and to honor his grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, who died Sunday at her home there.

Obama calling on economic experts for their advice
By NEDRA PICKLER

Emanuel to Serve As Obama's Chief of Staff

CHICAGO (AP) -- President-elect Obama is calling on economic experts to discuss the first steps toward healing a damaged economy as he forms a new administration in the face of a worsening crisis.

"We're not starting from nowhere," said Lawrence Summers, a Treasury secretary under President Clinton and one of the 17 members of Obama's transition economic advisory board who were to meet Friday with Obama.

"Throughout his campaign the president-elect has been talking about what we need to do. We need to put the middle class at the center of the policy approach in a way that it hasn't been these last years," Summers told NBC's "Today."

Leaders of business, government and academia to meet with Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden include executives from Xerox Corp., Time Warner Inc., Google Inc. and the Hyatt hotel company. Investor Warren Buffett was participating by telephone.

Obama also was holding his first news conference as president-elect after the meeting.

It was to be Obama's first public appearance since Tuesday's election, where exit polls showed that the economy was far and away the top issue for voters. More evidence of a recession came Friday when the government reported that the unemployment rate had jumped from 6.1 percent in September to 6.5 percent in October.

Obama has been meeting privately with his transition team, receiving congratulatory phone calls from U.S. allies and intelligence briefings, and making decisions about who will help run his government.

His first choice, for White House chief of staff, was Rahm Emanuel, a fiery partisan unafraid of breaking glass and hurting feelings. The choice of Emanuel is a significant departure from the soft-spoken, low-key aides that "No-Drama Obama" surrounded himself with during the campaign. And transition chief John Podesta, like Emanuel, is a former top aide to President Clinton and a tough partisan infighter, though less bombastic than the new chief of staff.

The selections are telling for Obama, who campaigned as a nontraditional, almost "post-partisan" newcomer. People close to him say the selections show he is aware of his strengths and weaknesses, and knows what he needs to be successful as he shifts from campaigning to governing.

Transition spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter said Obama would not announce any personnel appointments Friday.

One person frequently mentioned for a Cabinet post, Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, will not be available until 2011, say officials close to him.

The couple planned to visit the White House on Monday at President Bush's invitation.

Obama planned to stay home through the weekend, with a blackout on news announcements so he and his staff can rest after the grueling campaign and the rush of Tuesday night's victory. He is planning a family getaway to Hawaii in December before they move to the White House, and to honor his grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, who died Sunday at her home there.

Obama, who bested Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination, has made it clear he will rely heavily on veterans of her husband's eight-year administration, the only Democratic presidency in the past 28 years.
