Governor Jim Gibbons said today that he had expanded his special healthcare issues advisory element to include representatives from several medical specialties and from both Northern and Southern Nevada to serve with Dr. Ikram Khan, who was named last week. The panel will provide the Governor with advice on healthcare policy and issues concerning healthcare providers, purchasers of healthcare, consumers, and health insurers.*1

The new members include: Dr. Florence Jameson, an OB/GYN in Clark County and board member and past chair of the Clark County Medical Society; Dr. Michael J. Fischer, an ophthalmologist in Carson City and a past president of the Nevada State Medical Association; Dr. Rudy Manthei, former Chair of the Governor's Healthcare Transition Committee and Chair of Keep our Doctors in Nevada; Dr. M. Nafees Nagy, a southern Nevada oncologist and president of the Nevada Cancer Center and past vice chair of the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners; and Dr. James Colgan, a urologist and Medical Director of Physician抯 Managed Care, Inc. and one of the founding members of Physician Select Management, a physician owned medical management company in Carson City, Nevada.

Dear Friends:

As you may have already heard, some of my colleagues in the U.S. Senate have introduced a bill to fast track the storage of nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain. Let me be perfectly clear, this bill is dead on arrival. I will use every ounce of my power to ensure that this irresponsible bill never sees the light of day.*1

Allow me to share with you some of the worst aspects of this last ditch effort to revive the Yucca Mountain Project. First, this bill would allow Yucca Mountain to operate as an interim storage facility for 300 years without requiring an environmental radiation standard in place. We already know that they cannot build a waste dump at Yucca Mountain that would permanently isolate waste from the environment, so this bill instead says that we should put off environmental standards for 300 years, thus ensuring that radiation leaks into Nevada抯 environment even sooner than it would under current law.

This bill would completely gut the Nuclear Regulatory Commission抯 (NRC) process for reviewing a license application for Yucca Mountain. The NRC抯 process is already stacked against Nevada. Under this proposal, the Department of Energy (DOE) could receive a license from the NRC with even less scientific evidence for health and safety protection than under current law.

This dangerous bill also takes away the NRC抯 authority to consider operation of a rail line for transporting nuclear waste in its decision to approve or disapprove the Yucca Mountain license application. This is in spite of the NRC抯 responsibility to regulate the safety and security of spent fuel transportation. The authors clearly don抰 want experts to scrutinize the DOE抯 transportation plans because they know how risky they are.

I haven抰 fought against this ill-fated project for more than 20 years to see something like this happen to our state. I pledge to you, that as the Senate Majority Leader, I will ensure that this bill never becomes law.

Thank you for standing by my side in this fight. We have made a great deal of progress together, and if we continue to stand strong, we will overcome any effort to force this awful project on the state of Nevada.*2

Judge Oesterle moved to Las Vegas 27 years ago from South Miami, Florida. She attended the University of Nevada Las Vegas in 1978 and earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice graduating with High Distinction. She then attended California Western School of Law in San Diego and received her Juris Doctor Degree in 1981. Upon graduating from law school, Judge Oesterle was employed by the Clark County District Attorney髡 Office as a trial attorney in the criminal division for almost 10 years. During that time period she served six years on the Clark County Bar Association Board and in 1990 was President of Clark County Bar Association. In 1993 the Clark County Bar Association presented her with the Distinguished Presidential Service Award for her service to the Bar and that same year she was honored by the Chamber of Commerce with the Women of Achievement award for the legal category. In December, 2000, Judge Oesterle was named by the Clark County Law Foundation as the first ever Ambassador of the Year Award for her continued community service.

Judge Oesterle believes strongly in the importance of educating the public in all aspects regarding the law. She is the creator, producer and co-host of a weekly TV show, Law For The Layman, which has been airing in Clark County for the past thirteen (13) years. She also volunteers her time to a program she initiated entitled Keys to the Courthouse in which she visits elementary schools on a weekly basis and brings the elementary class to her courtroom to educate them regarding the criminal justice process. She has been the organizer of the Doctor v. Lawyer volleyball tournaments and softball games for charity for the past fourteen (14) years. But her real claim to fame was being a UNLV cheerleader throughout her years at UNLV.*3

Justice of peace pulls media duty for O.J. case

'It was a crazy day,' Las Vegas justice of peace says

Nancy Oesterle quipped she would have washed her blond hair and worn something other than white capris if she had known her image would be plastered all over television Monday.

Oesterle, a Las Vegas justice of the peace, was yanked off the bench in the morning and put in front of a pack of hungry reporters as the designated court spokeswoman for the O.J. Simpson robbery case.

"It was a crazy day," said Oesterle, 50.

Over the course of the day she responded to nearly 100 media inquiries and appeared on the Greta Van Susteren show "On the Record" Monday night. Oesterle, who in December 1990 became the first woman appointed to Las Vegas Justice Court bench, was scheduled to appear on the "Today" show this morning. Justices of the peace are responsible for setting bail and handling preliminary hearings and initial arraignments for felony cases before they proceed to District Court. Justices also oversee misdemeanor and small claims civil cases.

"I've been a judge 171/2 years, and in Las Vegas Justice Court, I call my job 'expect the unexpected,'" she said. "But I didn't expect this."

Oesterle is the creator, producer and co-host of her own weekly TV show, "Law and the Layman," which has been airing in Clark County for 13 years. She volunteers her time to Keys to the Courthouse, a program she started that brings elementary students into the courtroom to educate them on criminal justice. She is the chairwoman of the education committee for the Nevada Judges Association.

A Miami native, Oesterle moved to Las Vegas the day after her high school graduation in 1974. In 1978, she obtained a bachelor of arts degree in criminal justice from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where she was a cheerleader for four years. She received a law degree in 1981 from the California Western School of Law in San Diego.

Tomorrow, members of the Renewable Energy Transmission Access Advisory Committee (RETAAC) will present the Phase 1 report to Governor Gibbons during a press conference held at the Nevada State Capitol. The report includes recommendations for improved access to the transmission grid system.*1

The committee was tasked with identifying commercially developable locations for renewable energy, ranking them based on size, viability, and comparing them to Nevada 抯 energy needs and demand. An assessment of existing and planned transmission access to renewable resources was also conducted and will be included in the report.

Nevada spends as much as $6 billion dollars annually to import energy.

Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons earned a B.S. in Geology and later, a M.S. in Mining/Geology from the University of Nevada at Reno. There are lots of common headaches most of supervisors and leaders have to confront. "It's easy to understand how the broad scope these problems can easily lead to a less than steller attitude toward your job. However, adoping a sense of futility only serve to make matters worse. On the other hand, maintain a positive attitude helps you place things in perspective and can make coping eith problems a lot easier to do."*4

2008 Graziadio School Business Leadership Survey

Dear Tony:

Many economists are predicting that the 2008 business year in America will be tougher than ever. Credit worries, a declining dollar, international strife and a lack of consensus among national politicians all combine to put stress on business leaders.

In times like these it is more important than ever for us to enable students to lead complex teams, resolve conflicts, build consensus, and increase performance. In the fall of 2008, the Graziadio School is launching a new Master of Science in Management and Leadership that will help build new business leaders.
