In all three services at ROLCC on February 4, 2007, Rev. Tong Liu introduced the 2007 new Board of Directors. Director Mr. John K. Lei is the Chairman of the new Board. This was a joint effort between Asian Liver Center (ALC) at Stanford University and Holiday Plaza Series at River of Life Christian Church (ROLCC). We are really thankful that this collaboration was a great success. ALC and ROLCC are embracing the same vision in serving the community via community awareness seminar/blood screen on one of the biggest killers, hepatitis B/liver cancer in Asian community. More than 384 against the 250 planned individuals of government officials, business owners and executives, organizational leaders among others attended the party at the Asia Palace Chinese Restaurant on August 24, 2001. The Kenote Speaker was U. S. Senator Harry Reid. Guests of Honor presented were: U. S. Senator John Ensign (by Sonia Joya), U. S. Congresswoman Shelley Berkley, U. S. Congressman Jim Gibbons (by Judith Ray), and Nevada Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa. U. S. Congresswoman Shelley Berkley introduced Senator Harry Reid to the public with his successfully story to be the greatest political leader of Nevada arsing from the son of an ordinary family of mining worker. The first time as an honorable Master of Ceremony for Asian American community, Shelley' attractiveness and talent are really professional. She has been famous of her arts of leading on social activities since her college life. Data for researh study reference:世界周刊 《旅遊》水鄉威尼斯 威尼斯境內有150條大大小小的運河,因此享有「水鄉」的美譽,這座水上都市,實際上是由礁湖區內的118個大大小小的島嶼所組成的。 威尼斯的主運河之一。 威尼斯的水巷小運河。 提到水鄉威尼斯(Venice),人們總愛將它與浪漫畫上等號。 威尼斯是威納托(Veneto)省區的首府,位於義大利東北部、亞得里亞海(Adriatic Sea)沿岸的淺水礁湖區(Lagoon) 。 威尼斯的聞名於世,是因為它境內的150條大大小小的運河,也因此而享有「水鄉」的美譽,這座水上都市,實際上是由礁湖區內的118個大大小小的島嶼所組成的,而這些島嶼又是多沼澤的地理環境,要在濕軟的沼澤之地上蓋建築物,是何等困難,就可想而知了,但是威尼斯人克服了這個困難,造就了這聞名於世的水上都市。 早年開始建城的時候,是先用成千上萬的木樁密集地插入水底有多層次交替的泥沙中,然後將建築物的地基托架在這些木樁之上,再用磚石向上搭建而成,在那科學尚未發達的年代,威尼斯的這種水中建築的工程,真可謂是人力挑戰自然的見證。因為木頭在水底缺氧的環境中不容易腐爛,所以大部分的木樁雖經過了幾個世紀的考驗,至今仍然完好無損。 為了預防威尼斯城市周圍的水域被水中的沖積物所阻塞,大約在六百年前,威尼斯人就未雨綢繆地、運用了迫使威尼斯境內的主要河流轉向的方法,來阻止這種現象的發生,也因為這項措施,導致這原本是淺水的礁湖區水域,變成了前所未有的較深的水域。 運河交錯 重要交通 在威尼斯的這些島嶼及水巷之間是由大約400座不同造形的石橋來連接的,其中最有名的就是在聖馬可廣場附近的「嘆息橋」(The Bridge of Sighs),此橋是法院審訊室與監獄之間的唯一通道,建於1600年,直到19世紀才因為拜倫 (Lord Byron) 的有名詩句 :「I stood in Venice on the Bridge of Sighs, a palace and prison on each hand.」而開始被稱為「嘆息橋」。和其他的橋不同的是嘆息橋是密閉式的拱形石橋,在橋的兩側只有兩扇很小的窗子,因而橋的內部是陰暗而且低矮的,中間又被一道牆分隔成兩條狹窄的通道,因此當被判了刑的犯人,直接從審訊室送入監獄通過此橋的時候,只能以低垂著頭、彎著腰的姿勢通過,當犯人經過小窗時,從小小的窗孔對窗外的優美景色看上最後的一眼,不由得對即將失去的自由,發出聲聲後悔的嘆息。Lord Byron寫那兩句詩的靈感,就是源自於此。 在9世紀與12世紀之間,由於威尼斯在亞得里亞海,最前端的特殊地理位置造就了威尼斯在海軍與商業上無懈可擊的強盛勢力,而成為西歐與世界之間的貿易中心,尤其是它的海軍在歷史上曾經有過輝煌的一頁。 在威尼斯看不到汽車,一直以來運河就像是它的道路,船是唯一的交通工具,直到19世紀,建築了一條鐵路長堤 ,才將威尼斯主島與義大利本土連接起來,威尼斯也因此建了一座火車站,又在20世紀時,加建了公路長堤和停車場,從此威尼斯主島北部的邊陲地區,成為與義大利本土可經由火車與汽車通行的入口,但是僅僅只限於這北部邊陲地區,而在此區之外的地區,直到今日仍然繼續保持著古早的交通方式,坐船或走路,所以21世紀的今日,威尼斯是歐洲境內在沒有汽車的情況下仍能有效發揮交通功能的最大的都市。 水巷風光 船郎高歌 每天在威尼斯的運河與水巷中,忙碌穿梭的有大大小小各種不同的船隻,其中最具古典風格的、也是世界有名的小船,就是「貢多拉」(gon-dola) ,現今多用作旅客遊覽或婚喪喜慶之用,來到水鄉威尼斯必定要坐貢多拉一遊,運氣好碰到站在船尾的搖船郎興趣來了,一邊搖槳、一邊高歌一曲義大利情歌,船上的旅客們伴著歌聲,欣賞著水巷兩旁的古老建築、石橋,發思古之幽情,我想這大概就是人們將威尼斯與浪漫畫上等號的原因之一吧。 威尼斯的著名地標聖馬可廣場,是威尼斯的主要廣場,也是唯一被稱為Piazza 的廣場,其他的廣場無論大小都被稱為campi,在聖馬可廣場靠近總督大廈Doges’ Palace的位置,矗立著兩根高聳入雲的花崗石圓柱,建於1180年,其中之一的圓柱頂端,站立著一隻長著翅膀的雄獅,這就是有名的Winged Lion of Saint Mark。 在聖馬可廣場上,除了如梭的遊客之外,就是鋪天蓋地爭食的鴿子,只要往那兒一站,成群的鴿子就圍著你打轉,廣場四周的古建築的造型及外牆雕築精緻,令人目不暇給,鱗次櫛比的商店,許多是賣紀念品及小禮物的,在琳瑯滿目的禮品之中,最引人注目的要屬顏色鮮豔的玻璃製品,酒杯、酒瓶塞、藝術品……等,不一而足,因為威尼斯的吹玻璃工業製作是相當有名的。 威尼斯這座建築在海上的古城市,不但擁有輝煌的過去,而且現今又因浪漫的水鄉風情而成為旅遊勝地,每年吸引成千上萬的旅客到此遊覽。但是威尼斯也有嚴重下沉的問題 ,大約從1797年之後威尼斯開始出現逐漸下沉的情形,到目前為止還沒有研究出有效的拯救辦法,近年來更是受到潮水的侵襲,曾在1966 年11月,因大潮湧入礁湖古城區,造成聖馬可廣場被潮水淹沒至水深1.2公尺之下,並造成5000多人無家可歸的慘狀,同時也摧毀了無數的藝術作品,而且當年淹水的次數竟高達100多次。 (文、圖/劉小珍) 2007-09-23 -------------------------------------------- ******************************************** | |

Data for research study references:['華人生活圈'] 陳綺蓮成功路 濃縮移民奮鬥史 紐約市立大學科技學院首席駐校律師陳綺蓮說,她的成功\帶給父母無限的驕傲。【本報記者曲怡文攝】 【本報記者曲怡文紐約報導】對許多辛苦一輩子的華裔移民而言,看到自己的兒女在美國主流社會中出人頭地,是件非常值得驕傲的事,今年7月底正式被紐約市立大學科技學院(New York City College of Technology CUNY)聘為首席駐校律師的陳綺蓮,從她的成長過程,不僅可以看到華人移民的辛苦歷程,更具體反映出近50年來華人移民的歷史。 1950年代的「排華法案」限制華人移民數量,陳綺蓮的祖父隻身一人在紐約打了十多年的零工,為了完成家人團聚的夢想,陳綺蓮的父親與母親選擇移民到南美洲的巴西,並生下陳綺蓮。直到60年代末期排華法案解除,陳綺蓮的父親才能夠帶著全家和祖父團聚。 陳綺蓮回憶成長過程中,只受過兩年學校教育的父親,因為語言的隔閡,只能在中國餐館裡打工,每天工作超過12小時,靠著微薄的薪水將她與另外六位兄弟姐妹送進公立學校就學,而她的母親與祖母則是在華埠幫忙做家庭代工。 她回憶說,「有時就會看到媽媽和祖母手裡抱著一盒一盒的小珠子,他們說,串了12條項鍊,就能賺25分錢。」 也許就是從小看著祖父母和爸媽如此辛苦的工作,身為長女的她,也多了一份要讓家人過的更好的責任感。 由於在學校主修與工程相關的課程,陳綺蓮畢業後,首先進入位於麻州的奇異航空引擎公司(General Electric Aircraft Engines)擔任工程師,經過兩年的受訓,她意外發現自己對法律的熱情,因此在公司的支持下,她的人生出現了轉向。 自法學院畢業之後,陳綺蓮認為必須將自己所學回餽給社會,因此選擇回到紐約執業,在她多年的律師經驗中,她對族群問題以及勞工問題都相當有研究,也因為她多元的背景,紐約市立大學科技學院在尋找第一位駐校律師時,她優越的履歷很快就引起校長的注意。 目前剛上任一個月的陳綺蓮,主要為學校處理各種法律諮詢以及合約的審查工作。對於這份工作,她表示是一項全新的挑戰,從未在學術領域裡執業的她,對工作的遠景充滿自信,因為她相信有好的工作團隊,有好的上司,再艱難的任務,對她都不會是問題。 2007-09-15 -------------------------------------------- ******************************************** | |

Data for research study references:紐約新聞 服務社區爭出頭 亞裔女性談經驗 Jane Sung Bai(左起)、Saukok Chu Tiampo、凌德麗和李安琪13日分享亞裔女性參與社區服務的經驗。【本報記者劉爽攝】 【本報記者劉爽紐約報導】多個亞裔非營利組織的女性負責人13日聚集在曼哈坦紐約大學,進行一場有關亞裔社區中女性領袖的討論會,吸引了近百位亞裔青年前往聆聽。 這是由非營利組織Project by Project為慶祝其成立十周年而舉辦的討論會。會上邀請了亞裔反暴力聯盟(CAAAV)行政總監Jane Sung E. Bai,亞裔婦女中心(NYAWC)共同執行主任李安琪,「亞裔專業人員輔導協會」(Asian Pro-fessional Extension,簡稱 APEX)共同執行主任Saukok Chu Tiampo和紐約州高等法院第一位亞裔法官凌德麗,來討論作為亞裔女性在社區公益事業中遇到的困難,並為有志於社區服務的年輕人提出建議。 Jane Sung E.
