"The research grants announced (for UNLV and UN Reno) this week will help our students and faculties expand their academic horizons," said U. S. Senator Harry Reid on his recent "WHIP ROUND UP" in Washington, D. C. on April 30, 2004.*2 Reid for Nevada Reid Supports Security Help for High-Risk Targets Senator Harry Reid is supporting an initiative that will allow the Department of Homeland Security to provide assistance to high-risk non-profit organizations, including synagogues. Las Vegas has the fastest-growing Jewish population in north America, with an estimated 80,000 Jewish residents and 18 congregations in southern Nevada. Reid, Ensign Announce Astronomy Grant Students in Carson City will have an opportunity to explore the heavens thanks to a grant of almost $50,000 to the astronomy department at Western Nevada Community College. The grant was announced by Senator Reid and Senator John Ensign.*3 UNLV Gets $550,000 for Research Researchers at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas will study women's health and the history of atomic testing in the state, thanks to $550,000 in grants announced this week by Senator Reid. The UNLV Women's Health Sciences Center will receive $298,000 to purchase equipment for research and education activities, develop curriculum specific to women's health issues, and operate for its first year. The UNLV Nevada Test Site History Project will receive $249,000 to cover salaries of the research staff, travel to conduct participant interviews, and the costs of processing and archiving records.*4 ***Senator Reid joins students from Elko High School on the steps of the United States Capitol. The students were visiting as part of the Close Up program, which promotes civic values. Week in Review Reid Bill Would Cut Health Costs, Expand Coverage - On Thursday Senator Reid introduced The Healthy Employees, Healthy Small Businesses Act (HEHSB). The legislation would establish a new federal refundable tax credit to reimburse small business employers for part of the costs of providing health insurance coverage to their employees. Reid's tax credit would operate on a sliding scale, providing a significant tax credit to all businesses with fewer than 50 employees, but giving the greatest tax relief to the smallest enterprises. Companies with fewer than 10 employees could claim a credit of 50 percent of the cost of each eligible employee's policy, up to a limit of $1,500 for an individual policy or $3,400 for a family policy. Senate Extends Transportation Bill- At Senator Reid's urging, the Senate on Thursday agreed to a two-month extension of federal transportation programs that were set to expire on May 1. Reid warned that a failure to extend the programs would sidetrack road and transit projects and force the government to lay off thousands of workers. The House and Senate have passed separate versions of a new six-year transportation bill and efforts to reach an agreement continue. Ban on Internet Access Gets Four-Year Extension- The Senate voted overwhelmingly on Thursday to extend a four-year ban on Internet access taxes, which most experts believe will help keep Internet broadband access affordable and more widely available, particularly in rural areas. The House has previously approved a permanent ban, setting up the need for a conference committee to resolve the differences. INSIDER'S CALENDAR The Senate will convene on Monday, May 3, at 1:00 p.m. with a period of morning business until 2:00 p.m. At 2:00 p.m. the Senate will resume consideration of the FSC-ETI bill under an agreement limiting first degree amendments. No roll call votes will occur on Monday. During the remainder of the week, the Senate may consider the Budget Conference Report. Under the Budget Act, debate on the report is limited to 10 hours. Without specifying a price per share, Google said it hopes to raise $2.7 billion with an initial public offering that has created the biggest high-tech buzz since the dot-com bubble burst four years ago. The IPO is expected to give Google a market value of at least $20 billion, creating scores of new Silicon Valley millionaires - including many of the company's 1,900 employees. "Feels great!" Google employee Edwina Beaus said as she walked between buildings at the company's Mountain View headquarters - a hub known as the "Googleplex." But even as it prepared to dance with the Wall Street bankers who will take it public, Google warned investors that it won't take its marching orders from the markets. "Google is not a conventional company. We do not intend to become one," co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin wrote in an open letter included in the IPO filing. As expected, Google said the price of its IPO will be determined through an auction designed to give the general public a better chance to buy its stock before the shares begin trading, most likely in late summer or early autumn. IPO shares traditionally have been restricted to an elite group picked by the investment bankers handling the deal. Google picked two long-established investment bankers - Morgan Stanley and Credit Suisse First Boston - to manage its populist IPO approach. Although Google's stock won't be sold for several more months, the filing represents a significant milestone in the 5 1/2-year-old company's evolution from a fun-loving startup to a corporate adolescent that will be held more accountable for how it manages its money. Google has done well so far, according to a filing that shined a light on the privately held company's finances for the first time. Depending almost entirely on advertising linked to online searches, Google earned $105.6 million, or 41 cents per share, on revenue of $962 million last year. Google got off to an even better start this year, with a first-quarter profit of $64 million, or 24 cents per share - more than doubling its earnings of $25.8 million, or 10 cents per share, at the same time last year. By going public, Google will be under greater pressure to produce steady earnings growth - an expectation that some executives say leads to shortsighted management decisions. As a public company, "you become sharper in some respects, but it also can cause you to make some decisions just so you can show growth from quarter to quarter," said Steve Berkowtiz, chief executive of Ask Jeeves Inc., a Google rival and business partner. But Google says it won't fall into that trap, striving to remain true to the vision of the iconoclastic Page and Brin, former Stanford University graduate students who founded the company in 1998. In one of its first rebellious steps, Google will refuse to project its earnings from quarter to quarter, according to the letter signed by Page and Brin. "A management team distracted by a series of short-term targets is as pointless as a dieter stepping on a scale every half hour," they wrote. Industry veterans, though, doubt Google will be able to buck Wall Street once it goes public. "After the IPO, they're going to have to think in terms of predictable quarterly results and momentum," said Gordon Eubanks, who took software maker Symantec Corp. public in 1989 and now is CEO of Oblix Inc., a security startup. "You have to have a level of predictability and experience to warrant being a public company." To insulate themselves from outside pressure, Page and Brin are creating a two-class stock hierarchy designed to give them effective veto power. The company is selling Class A common stock to the public, but Page and Brin will control Class B stock, which will have 10 times the voting power. The setup is similar to systems used by several major media companies and Berkshire Hathaway Inc., run by stock market sage Warren Buffett. Thursday's filing didn't spell out how large the founders' stakes will be after the offering, although they are listed as the company's largest individual shareholders. Both are expected to become billionaires after the IPO. Google paid each man $356,556 in salary and bonuses last year. The filing also emphasized that both Page, 31, and Brin, 30, intend to remain Google's hands-on leaders, making all key decisions with CEO Eric Schmidt, a former top executive at Sun Microsystems Inc. and Novell Inc. who joined the company in 2001. Google is already one of the world's best-known brands, with an online search engine that processes more than 200 million queries daily. Despite its rapid success, Google faces an uncertain future as it tries to fend off stiffening competition from two much larger rivals, software giant Microsoft Inc. and Yahoo! Inc., which runs the world's most popular Web site. Through February, Google held a 35 percent share of the search engine market, with Yahoo at 30 percent and Microsoft's MSN at 15 percent, according to comScore Networks, a research firm. "Someone could still come out of left field and blow Google out of the water," said independent technology industry analyst Rick Broadhead. "What they are doing isn't rocket science. For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding."*2 While the beautiful Christmas card from the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia to Dr. Tony Lei has been designed and posted to the WBTI website last December, we are also pleased to quote some idea of the letter from its Director of Alumni Giving and Communication in order to advance their effort for the higher education in Asia from America. The letter begun with a warmest Christimas wish to all dear friends of the United Board. Director of the Department Nan Hawkins wrote that "This season is such a delightful time of anticipation and joy. It's also, of course, a time for reflection, especially about our faith, which forcuses on the realizatiion of the extraordinary promise God made through Babriel to Mary, and to all of us: that with the birth of Jesus, God, fully divine, would become fully human...fully present in our world."*3 The late Dr. Paul T. Lauby, United Board's president emeritus, made the daring decisions that led us to expand our work to new schools and new regions, and he oversaw our return to our original roots in mainland China. He was the prime mover in launching the alumni rpogram, which has become so important to the schools, the United Board, and, of course, to you. "You, Dr. Lei and all our dear friends, too, are wonderful examples of God's presence in the world, especially in the many ways you demonstrate your loyalty to your alma matters in Asia. Numerious visitors were crowing to here, yet Tunghai University had brought good conference and reunion news for Chinese American academic and educaton community of Nevada.*5 On July 6, gathering to Las Vegas had been the directors and members of Tunghai Endowment Fund for Academic Advancement (TEFA) and 12 - 13th classes of Tunghai Reunion. VIPs were invited by Dr. Tony Lei, President of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) having champagne dinner at Gee Joon Chinese Restaurant of Horseshoe Casino and Hotel. Gerri Schoder brought the certificates of award by Congresswoman Shelley Berkley to the dinner party. TEFA returned with the best Taiwanese box of tea to Shelley. After the pleasent dinner, all the members of party group were treated to enjoy the famous show "Naked Angeles" by Dr. Tony Lei. On the 8th of July, a Welcome Tea Party was held by Dr. Tony T. Lei, Chairman of Chinese American Academic Association of Nevada (CAAAN) and Mrs. Judy K. Lei. It was held for the celebrating of the incorperation of TEFA USA and the Global Tunghai Reunion in Las Vegas. In the conference, Dr. Lei expressed sincere welcome in his short speech to both the Corperation and Reunion. He then introduced Theresa Malone, Member of the Nevada Board of Education, and Denise Brodsky, Las Vegas School Board of Trustees to deliver welcome speeches. Malone spoke for U.S. Senator Harry Reid's welcome to the Conference and announced Reid's certificates of commendation to TEFA and CAAAN. Founder of the Thai Art Council in Pasadena and the Thai Art Center in Los Angeles, Tassananchalee has exhibited in Asia and the United States. "To me, art is a universal," Tassananchalee has said. "Concepts, and ideas are infinite. Therefore, I feel comfortable incorporating ordinary things around me into my artwork. A good foundation with deep cultural roots has, without limiting me unduly, provided me with the security and strength to pursue my creativity." Tassananchalee said the themes in his work "are developed from my life experience, which is a balance between two hemispheres of the globe. With the stable mind of the Thai artist, I am on my own journey, combining East and West together in my work. Since I have been on this path for a long time, I have discovered that the basis for creating quality art is rooted in an artist living a candid and honest lifestyle. Las Vegas was again named the nation's top convention destination for 2003, extending a remarkable 10-year reign as the industry's No. 1 host market, editors of a respected industry publication said this week. Since 1974, Tradeshow Week, a Los Angeles-based magazine that monitors the global convention industry, has compiled a list of the nation's largest conventions and trade shows. Its annual Tradeshow Week 200 report, to be published in Friday's edition, also lists the industry's busiest cities as ranked by most large shows hosted, as well as total square footage leased by such shows during the year. For 2003, Las Vegas again ranked as the industry's dominant market in both categories. Its 38 shows were 11 more than second-place Chicago and 21 better than last year's third-place finisher, Orlando, Fla. .... Paul Dykstra, whose GES Exposition Services supports some of this city's largest trade shows including the International Consumer Electronics Show and National Association of Broadcasters' annual event, said Wednesday he's not surprised Las Vegas has maintained its top ranking for so long. "We've seen strengthening in all of our Vegas-based business," said Dykstra, who is president and chief executive officer of GES. "It's got a terrific convention and visitors bureau, three of the (nation's) largest venues and the hotels and infrastructure that really support the convention and trade show business." That opinion was supported by Patti Shock, who is chairwoman of the tourism and convention department at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Shock said Wednesday that conventions held here usually draw more attendees because guests know there's plenty to do outside the trade show hall -- a characteristic that often means less work for show planners. "Who wants to sit at a banquet room, rubber chicken dinner when they can be out doing Las Vegas?" Shock asked. "Here (show organizers) don't have to plan so many events" to occupy delegates after hours. Shock added local convention centers' proximity to hotels, restaurants and other attractions makes Las Vegas more appealing than cities where guests must travel great distances from venue to venue, particularly for large, citywide conventions. Las Vegas is the only city that's home to three of the country's 10 largest convention venues: the 2.3 million-square-foot Las Vegas Convention Center; 1.9 million-square foot Sands Expo and Convention Center adjacent to The Venetian; and the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, a 1.5 million-square-foot center on the south Strip. While the presence of several large halls allows Las Vegas to maximize its trade show calendar, Shock said she routinely hears from meeting planners who complain that they can't book space in Las Vegas because the city is already too busy. "We're so busy we can't keep up with all the business we do have," Shock said. "There would be tons and tons more people who'd meet here if they could get in." To that end, 871,000 square feet of new meeting space is scheduled to open at various sites in town by the end of 2006, bringing the citywide inventory close to 10 million square feet. .... Last year, conventions added an estimated $6.5 billion to the local economy, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. This innovative new plan will result in long overdue savings for taxpayers.*2 The multi-state purchasing plan announced by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson includes Nevada, Alaska, Michigan, New Hampshire, and Vermont. By working together with state and federal officials, these states have joined together to reduce the costs of prescription drug costs for their citizens. As a result of the innovative plan, these states will utilize the proven private sector technique of pooling resources as leverage to negotiate lower prices with drug manufacturers. The costs of prescription drugs unfortunately continue to escalate every year. This year, our state will spend about $100 million on prescription drug medicines for our most needy citizens. As a result of the new purchasing plan, Nevada’s Medicaid program prescription drug costs could be reduced by as much as $1.9 million this year. And, once the plan is fully implemented, savings will grow to about $5 million per year. Finding innovative and cost-effective ways to help our citizens receive more inexpensive prescription drug medicines has been one of the primary goals of my administration. This focus has included the creation of our successful Senior Rx program and other assistance programs for elderly and disabled citizens. But the contest for the now-open Department E seat this year will definitely be a race, and it is quickly shaping up as one of the most intriguing and potentially expensive statewide races of the political year. Clark County District Judge Ron Parraguirre, in formally announcing his bid for the seat Tuesday morning, called it a "$1 million race." He will be facing Reno entertainment attorney John Mason and Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Douglas Smith. "If I sit there like a mushroom and don't raise any money, I'm not going to get elected and I'm not going to be able to do the job," Parraguirre said. .... Parraguirre's plan changed with the April 15 announcement by Deborah Agosti that she would not be seeking re-election to the Department E seat. .... Mason, a former chairman of the state Republican Party, has raised about $400,000, including $135,000 of his own money, and already is advertising on television and billboards statewide. "I hope he's not right, but if he can raise $1 million, so can I," Mason said. .... Republican consultant Sig Rogich said a majority of voters still are undecided. .... "I have good name recognition in the rurals and in Northern Nevada," Parraguirre said. Parraguirre got his law degree from the University of San Diego Law School and was a legislative assistant to former Sen. Paul Laxalt in Washington, D.C. He returned to Nevada in 1987 to practice law. He won a seat in Las Vegas Municipal Court in 1991 and served three terms before being appointed by Gov. Kenny Guinn to his current seat on the District Court bench in 1999. One reason the Department E race was drawing media attention was last year's 6-1 decision, penned by Agosti, in Guinn v. the Legislature. Las Vegas has experienced phenomenal growth over the years, especially the 1940s and '50s when growth rates reached double digits, and the population is projected to top 2 million by 2015, said Peter Morrison of Rand Population Research Center. The metropolitan area is a microcosm of the United States' growing influx of immigrants and maturing baby boomers, he said. "What I see from the outside is Las Vegas is a geographic magnet. People are here by choice rather than their place of birth," Morrison said at Las Vegas Perspective 2004, an economic forum that highlights information contained in a 104-page book used to recruit new business. Every day, about 165 new residents move to Clark County, he calculated. While still in high school, Jackie worked as a waitress to help buy her school supplies and school clothes. When she decided to attend the University of Georgia, she continued as a waitress and worked her way through college. She took on extracurricular assignments, and earned a degree in journalism. Her journalism career brought Jackie to Las Vegas in 1978 where she began as a radio news reporter. She moved quickly to television and served as both a morning anchor and crime beat reporter. As she followed the course of the trials she covered, she watched attorneys in action, and knew she could do as well. A new challenge lay before her. Once again, she worked her way through college, graduating from the University of San Diego School of Law. In 1984, Jackie passed the Nevada Bar exam before graduation, received her Juris Doctor Degree,*3 was admitted to the Nevada Bar, and married her husband, Steve Wolfson. Faithfulness to our heritage ennobles and illuminates all that we do. I have not forgotten the pormise I made in my inaugural address as I took office in the year 2000.*2 Since beginning the leadership opportunity, I continue to believe that our greatest challenge are contained in the areas of resources, deversity, heritage, community, and scholarship. We have managed our resources well during this challenging period. We have increased our diversity. I think our heritage provides light, really good light, for learning. We illumininate lives with immutable truths and notions of oughtness and rightness. We ask no quarter in our competition with the finest, shinning institutions of learning in America, and we offer the brilliance and the unique dimension of values in our classes. We invite the presence of God in the midst of all that we do: that, more than anything else, lights our way. S. A. By Kenny C. Guinn*1 I am headed off to Ely on Saturday. While there I will tour a local school involved in a pilot program that is known as the Fuels for Schools Program. I wanted to take a moment to tell you a little bit about this program because it not only helps our citizens in rural Nevada but it also has other benefits for the state.*2 The David E. Norman Elementary School in Ely has several buildings on its campus that were constructed between 1957 and 1990. The out-of-date heat plant for the facility is a hodge-podge of aging technologies, including oil-fired boilers, which produce hot water and steam heat, and electric baseboard heat. These old systems are expensive to maintain and to operate. Remarkably, a member of our State Division of Forestry came up with a novel concept that will allow this school to receive a state-of-the-art heating system that will utilize a low-emission, more economical biomass fuel source. Working with officials from the White Pine County School District and the U.S. Forest Service, the State Division of Forestry has obtained $340,000 in federal grant funds. This grant will pay for the purchase and installation of a biomass or wood-chip heating system that will be fueled by a portion of the thousands of tons of branches, twigs, and needles that are cleared to abate forest and rangeland fire dangers. This pilot project is a wise investment for our state, and it may create new jobs in cash; strapped Ely. Also, the program will free up resources for this small community because the cost to heat this one school will decrease by up to 40 percent. Further, it will reduce the need to import fuel oil and result in a cleaner, low-cost heating source. Finally, it will better utilize the waste materials that the state generates as it reduces the threat of wildfires for our rural communities, which previously burdened our landfills. I am proud that we have been able to act to take advantage of the Fuels for Schools Program. It represents a good example of how a state employee, working in conjunction with school district employee Paul Johnson and others, used insight, experience, and creativity to better serve Ely, its residents, and all the citizens of Nevada.*3 ----------------------------- References *1. Tony Lei with reunion dinner," written by Tiffany Chang, was published by "Nevada Examiner."*1 "We always think of our relatives and closed friends when it comes with the festival," is a famous idom in Chinese. A sample of this spirit may be revealled in the letters from Harry Reid, Archie Chang, Peter Wang, Bob Ni, among others to Dr. and Mrs. Tony Lei. To a friend's house the road is never long. Let's share together with the some of the golden words about firendship from the Bible: (1)Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselved. --- Romans 12: 10 (2)A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity. --- Proverbs 17: 17 (3) He who loves a pure heart and whose speech is gracious will have the king for his friend. --- Proverbs 22: 11.*2 As a sincere believer of God, we found that we can even live as in the heaven in this World at the present.*3 Whether people is living in the Heaven or in the Hell is up to his or her selection. With sincere love, you are likely to live in the Heaven. With cruel hate, you are likely live in the Hell. To fight and destroy each others for property and fame is where the place called Hell. To cooperate with each others to promote our quality of life will be the place where we people may make it as a Heaven. Therfore, the Heaven is where the place full of love while the Hell is where the place full of hate. It is all depending on your heart to see whether you are in the Heaven or in the Hell. By using this standard, you may measure the quality or depth of yours in the Heaven or your in the Hell. Accordng to the oriental (not Asian) ways of life, people would suspect the one who always find out and praise the good characters and accomplishment of others. In the many thousand years of the past, it was one of the factor that hurt the encouragement for innovation and science development for the Asian people and countries. After a full applause by the audience at his speech, a professor automatically spoke his mind: "The people who enthusiastically give a hand to others, will certainly one day get a lot of more applauses!" Everytime when he was encouraged and praised by an individual, Dr. Tony Lei used to remind: "The one who knows how to praise other people, is the one herself or himself having certainly lots of more goodness which are worth for us to praise for!"*4 With honor as the Assistant Democratic Leader of U. S. Senate, Senator Harry Reid wrote Dr. and Mrs. Tony Lei on January 11, 2001 from his office in Washington, D. C. : "The holiday season is a time for remembering the good things that have happened during the year, for reflecting on the many blessings of our lives, and for renewing the bonds of love and friendship that make our lives special."*5 The famous political leader from Nevada continued his literary and intimate writing that, "This year has been eventful for the Reid family. Our first child, Lana, and our three grandchildren live in the Washington area. Roary and three more of our grandchildren live in Las Vegas. Leif is in Reno with two more grandchildren and have just told us another is on the way. Josh just passed the bar, is living in Reno and also has announced our new daughter-in-law is expecting. Finally, our youngest, Key, lives in the Washington DC area with our newest grandchild. So, as you can see, we have the pleasure of grandchildren in each of our frequent stops, Las Vegas, Reno and Washington."*6 The Bible says: "Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?" (Matthew 6:26) Take what the Senator says to Dr. Lei in his letter that, "On behalf of Landra and our family, I want to thank you thinking of us during this holiday season. Each holiday greeting reminds us that we are truly fortunate to have so many friends and loved ones with whom to share this special time." And if a humble individual like Dr. Lei may be treated so friendly by our Senator Reid, obviously everyone of us in Nevada would be taken care by his extended kindness. And this be our mode: "In God is our trust!" His love to his family and his friends revealled his dignified and humane spirit through his words in the letter. For a great and powerful person like him to have such a beautiful and kind heart is really the glory of God. "Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil, cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves," says the Bible. (Romans 12:9-10) At the end of the letter, the famous U.S. Senator says that, "The Reid family has been richly blessed and we look forward to the years ahead. I hope that the season brings happiness and good fortune to you and your loved ones. With warmest regards."*7 "People worry about the huge amount of creativity that is wasted---lost forever---because talented people are prevented from giving their best by their lack of ability to influence others effectively," wrote Dr. Ken Blanchard in the 'Foreword' of the book entitled "Winning Ways," written by Dick Lyles.*8 "The business world has changed; organizations are getting flatter and more networked. Today, the key to success is one's ability to exercise peer leadership. The most successful individuals shine because of their ability to influence, empower, and energize others. In essence, they embody the principles and practices of Winning Ways." "Rapid changes in technology and global competition have combined to reshape the corporate landscape. Corporate management has responnded to these changes by iniatating sweeping changes. The introduction of new technology may be touted as a productivity booster and turn out instead to be a total bust. Whatever the problem may be, you're the one who has to deal with it on a daily basis. Even when new ideas are well thought out, there are still problems in putting them into practice within your group," George Fuller wrote in the 'Introduction' of his book, "Win/win management: leading people in the new workplace."*9 There are lots of common headaches most of supervisors and leaders have to confront. "It's easy to understand how the broad scope these problems can easily lead to a less than steller attitude toward your job. However, adoping a sense of futility only serve to make matters worse. On the other hand, maintain a positive attitude helps you place things in perspective and can make coping eith problems a lot easier to do." *10 To advance our projects more effectively for the people and communities who are interested to participate them, we need to emphasize the spirit of positive attitude and positive thinking. "I agree with Judge Valorie Vega's idea to be honored as a Fellow of the Public Administration Institution (PAI) of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI). She wrote: 'It will undoubtedly provide me with avenuess for exploring improvements in public services to which I am most dedicated.' I'm glad also to share the similar position as its faculty member--- Obligatory Legal Counselor of Pan Pacific and Asian American Forum (PPAAF). "It's significant. Dr. Tony Lei told me that for comunity service --- that based on 'love in action is service above self' --- the abundanct reward from one's humune love, spiritual excellence, and professionalism of expert are far more greater than solely his or her title," said Jackie Glass, Esq. on April 18, 2002. Jackie is now a famous District Judge of Nevada. People asked another professor whether his speech was wonderful or not. He felt that sometime it was wonderful but sometime not. It all depended on luck. "Only if I've wonderful audience, my speech would be definitely wonderful!" he said. "It's my good experience, like Senator John Ensign's, to be introduced by Dr. Tony Lei to deliver a speech to our Nevadan seniors in the election year of 2000. I'm glad to have a friend like Tony who can merge the modern scientific methodology of management philosophy with the humane spirit and charitable love to the value and belief of religion. It is quite an impressive article which was published on the "Chinese Daily News" recently. The author pointed out that an unfavourable habbit of the Chinese people in America is probably the "unbearable to the good things for the other people to have in the Chinese community." A great deal of need for our Chinese people is to give more a big hand to the achievements of the people like Yin Sun Kuan (pronounced in Chinese) who won the 7th times of the World Championship of Skating in the United States. Reid Offers Proof of Gas Price Gouging Continuing his fight to get relief for Nevadans who have been slammed by soaring gasoline prices, Senator Reid this week charged that big oil refiners are making windfall profits and called on the Federal Trade Commission to take action. The FTC can force oil companies to lower their prices through fines and other penalties if it finds that they have manipulated the supply of gasoline. Reid Hails Funds for Clark County Shooting Range Senator Reid announced this week that $15 million from the sale of federal land in southern Nevada will be allocated for a public shooting range in Clark County. Week in Review Discussions on Asbestos Bill Continue - Negotiations are continuing as Senate leaders seek a compromise solution on the issue of asbestos liability. A bill to replace the current litigation system with a trust fund for victims of asbestos-related illnesses is stalled after a motion for cloture failed to get the necessary votes Thursday. Bill to Strengthen Victims' Rights Passes- A bill to guarantee that victims of crimes are informed about developments in criminal cases easily passed the Senate Thursday. The measure had originally been offered as a bipartisan constitutional amendment. Reid Seeks Fair Coverage on Contraceptive Drugs- A bipartisan "Putting Prevention First" bill to reduce unintended pregnancies was introduced in the Senate this week. One provision of the bill is a measure that Senator Reid has sponsored since 1997, which would require health insurance policies that cover prescription drugs to include coverage of prescription contraceptives. By eliminating the high out-of-pocket costs that many women must pay for prescription contraceptives, unintended pregnancies could be reduced. Reid Addressing BYU Law School Grads- Senator Reid is delivering the commencement address today at the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University. Reid will remind the graduates that practicing law is a privilege and urge them to use their knowledge to help their neighbors and fellow citizens.
