Secretary's Remarks: Remarks for 12th Annual Global Travel and Tourism Summit

04/19/2012 01:03 PM EDT

Remarks for 12th Annual Global Travel and Tourism Summit

Press Statement

Hillary Rodham Clinton
Secretary of State

Washington, DC

April 19, 2012

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Good morning, everyone. I am delighted to send greetings to you as you discuss new ways to lead this dynamic industry through these exciting and challenging times.
The United States and Japan enjoy a strong partnership based on a history of shared experiences, common values and ties of family and friends. This partnership is as strong as ever today. We’ve worked closely with you during the past year to help rebuild after the tragic events of last March. Japan has helped so many people around the world during their own crises and catastrophes and I want to express my appreciation to all of you for meeting in Japan and spreading the message that Japan is indeed open for business, including tourism.

More than one billion people will travel around the world this year. They will help our economies grow and support new areas of cooperation. At the State Department, we’re working to support tourism through student exchanges, study abroad opportunities and our visa waiver program. We, too, want the world to know that America is open for business, tourism and investment.

We are keeping America safe while welcoming visitors who add to our nation's culture and economy. As government and industry leaders, we need to look toward the future, and continue to harness the forces of change. So, I can’t wait to hear about what new ideas you come up with at this conference, because travel and tourism have the power to build new bridges, broaden our understanding, and make our world a safer, more prosperous, peaceful place. Thank you all very much.

Tony,

Whether you’re a single mother fighting to pay your mortgage, a recent college graduate fighting to find work, or a senior fighting to stretch your Social Security check as far as possible -- we’re all fighting for something.

I know what I’m fighting for in this election -- I’m fighting for the middle class Americans that need their government to work for them.

I want to keep the debate in this election focused on the issues that matter. If you’re ready to fight with me, chip in to our Nevada Fights Back Fund today!

Washington is set on an agenda that says we protect the rich and ignore the middle class; that lets the world lead on renewable energy while we here in the United States fall behind; that says the special interests should take priority over the interests of the voters.

That’s not my vision for Nevada.

I am fighting back. Contribute to the Nevada Fights Back Fund today, and help us build the resources to keep the debate on point this year.

November will be here before we know it -- and we can only win this fight if we’re all in it together.

Thank you for all of your support.

Shelley

Anthony leads Knicks in last visit to New Jersey

By BRIAN MAHONEY | The Associated Press – 18 hours ago

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) Carmelo Anthony saw the Knicks jerseys in the stands, heard the cheers, and felt right at home.

''It was a great Knicks atmosphere out there tonight,'' he said.

It always was whenever the Knicks played across the Hudson River.

Anthony scored 21 of his 33 points in the first quarter, and the Knicks beat the Nets 104-95 on Wednesday night in their last trip to New Jersey.

Continuing his torrid stretch without Amare Stoudemire and Jeremy Lin, Anthony hit his first six shots in front of the usual pro-New York crowd that will become an all-New York crowd next season, when the Nets move to Brooklyn.

The Nets once hoped to have Anthony in the lineup when they got there and he is showing why lately, surpassing 30 points for the third straight game and the sixth time in nine games this month. He shot 11 of 21, going 5 of 7 on 3-pointers, and finished slightly ahead of the NBA-best 32.1 points he was averaging in April.

''He's playing unbelievable right now,'' center Tyson Chandler said. ''He's playing, if not the best, definitely in the tops right now, as far as individual basketball.''

Chandler added 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Knicks, who won for the 15th time in 20 games under interim coach Mike Woodson and remained in seventh place in the Eastern Conference.

Gerald Wallace scored 21 points in his return to the starting lineup after missing four games with a strained left hamstring for the Nets, who were still without All-Star guard Deron Williams because of a sore right calf.

Mike Bibby had eight points and eight assists for the Knicks in place of Baron Davis, who sat out with a stomach virus.

Anthony followed LeBron James' spectacular finish here Monday, when he scored Miami's final 17 points in the last five minutes, with a start that was nearly as good.

The All-Star forward made his first six shots, including three 3-pointers, the crowd cheering louder with each as he nodded his head and stuck out his tongue in enjoyment of how easily it was coming. The Knicks' lead reached 21 on his three-point play with 2:02 remaining in the period, and the Nets needed the last basket of the quarter to make it 38-22 and avoid being outscored by Anthony.

It was 64-47 at halftime, but Anthony didn't get the same help he had Tuesday against Boston, when JR Smith and Novak combined for 15 of the Knicks' 19 3-pointers, and the offense stalled in the third quarter.

The Nets outscored the Knicks 24-14 in the period, limited New York to just 4-of-17 shooting, and got as close as five before heading to the fourth down 78-71.

Nets coach Avery Johnson thought the Nets did a much better job against Anthony after his explosive start.

''He was phenomenal in the first quarter. I think he hit two or three shots from half court,'' Johnson said. ''He got them off to a great start but when Anthony went out the game I thought our second unit, some of our subs did a really good job against their bench and then we got back into the game. We did a good job of guarding Anthony in the second half.''

Smith and Novak finally got going in the fourth, combining for 15 of New York's first 16 points as the Knicks regained control before the crowd chanted ''Let's go Knicks! Let's go Knicks!''

The fans, many wearing Knicks jerseys, later saluted Anthony with ''MVP! and ''Melo!'' chants.

''It felt like a home game for us,'' Anthony said. ''Most of the crowd was our fans, here in New Jersey, so it didn't really feel like a road game for us.''

The Nets are used to it, and Wallace, playing in his first Nets-Knicks game, said he had similar experiences in the NBA.

''You must (have) forgot I was (in) Charlotte for like seven years. The first three years it felt like we were somewhere,'' he said. ''Every team we played it felt like we were in their city. That's not a big thing. I'm kind of used to it.

''They're a playoff team, we're not. So obviously they're going to have more fans and their fans are going to be more energetic than our fans.''

It was the usual Knicks-Nets game in New Jersey, where the scoreboard listed the Nets as the home team but there was no reason to believe it. It's a short trip from New York across the Hudson River, and the Knicks fans' have been all too happy to take it, one of the reasons the rivalry has always been in the Knicks' favor.

The Nets had some success through the years, including sweeping the Knicks out of the 2004 playoffs, and dominated their cross-river rivals for a few years when Jason Kidd made the Nets one of the top teams in the East.

But the Knicks have owned the off-the-court battle, and scored the most recent and perhaps significant victory in February 2010, when Denver took their package instead of the Nets' when they finally decided to move Anthony. Though it was long believed his preference was the Knicks, the Nets hoped he would be convinced to accept a trade to New Jersey if the Nuggets didn't like what the Knicks were offering, knowing he needed to sign a new contract last season before a new collective bargaining agreement that was going to severely limit salaries.

The Nets rebounded from the disappointment by acquiring Williams the next day, but he insists he will test free agency this summer. His decision could determine whether the Nets arrive in Brooklyn with hopes of contending anytime soon.

Nets officials hope the move to the Barclays Center, scheduled to open in September, and its easy accessibility via a number of subway lines will help them establish a fan base that they never consistently count on in the Meadowlands or during their two years at the Prudential Center.

They will play their final game in New Jersey on Monday against Philadelphia.

Smith finished with 15 points for the Knicks. Sundiata Gaines, starting for Williams, finished with 18.

Notes: Stoudemire will work out Thursday with the expectation that he will return from a bulging disk in his back Friday against Cleveland. ... Knicks reserve forward Jared Jeffries was a late scratch with a sore right knee. ... The Nets are 1-7 without Williams this season.

Jeremy Lin's story is a great lesson for kids everywhere because it debunks and defangs so many of the prejudices and stereotypes that unfairly hold children back. He's dispelled the idea that Asian-American guards somehow couldn't hack it in the NBA — and that being a world-class athlete on the court is somehow at odds with being an excellent student off the court.

Contrary to what you might read, Jeremy, 23, is no overnight sensation. In fact, he achieved success the old-fashioned way: he earned it. He worked hard and stayed humble. He lives the right way; he plays the right way.

It's great to see good values rewarded in professional sports because that's not always the case. Often it's the bling, the glam, the individual that gets celebrated — not the team and working together to advance a goal bigger than oneself. Jeremy cares only about one thing — winning. And I don't care whether you are an Asian-American kid, white, black or Hispanic, Jeremy's story tells you that if you show grit, discipline and integrity, you too can get an opportunity to overcome the odds.

To: "tony lei" Friend --

I'm writing because Barack needs you out there this summer.

Through the Organizing Fellowship program, you can work in a full-time volunteer position, learn the principles of field organizing, and then carry out important grassroots activities on the ground.

This summer, thousands of these organizing fellows are going to help lead our grassroots organization -- recruiting volunteers and running events to help more people make their voices heard.

It's an amazing experience -- one that could change your life while shaping this country for decades to come.

Apply now to be a summer organizing fellow, or pass this note along to someone you know who might be interested.

If you take a position as a fellow, you'll help more people to step up at the local level, where there are so many opportunities to make so much change. You'll register voters, recruit and train volunteers, run phone banks, have conversations with people on their front porches, and build the relationships that will bring your community together to fight for progress.

There will be difficult days, and long ones, too. But being an organizer is one of the best experiences you can have working in politics.

The people who take on this challenge will not only help move this country forward -- they'll also become the next generation of leaders.

The strength of this organization comes from the people involved. We never could have come this far without folks like you who have a passion for organizing and a commitment to finishing what we started together.

If you're ready to play a critical role in our grassroots campaign, apply now -- or forward this note to someone you know who may be interested:

Dear Tony,

Ann Kirkpatrick, of Arizona's 1st Congressional District, is a true Western woman: tough, resourceful, and not afraid of a challenge.

During our time together in Congress, Ann and I immediately bonded over our common priorities as women who represented Western states. We ignored all the partisan bickering and cable-news nonsense and worked hard to create jobs, protect our natural resources and stand up for seniors.

In 2010, the Koch brothers and other big money special interest groups poured over $10 million into attack ads to defeat us. We were both bucked off our horses, but we got right back in the saddle. We will not be defeated again. Together, we will return to represent the West!

Help me get Ann Kirkpatrick back in Congress to represent our Western issues. Please contribute $5 or more TODAY!

The West has a rich history of electing women to office, particularly tough women like Ann Kirkpatrick. We know how to work hard, and we don’t shy away from it.

I’m supporting Ann Kirkpatrick’s 2012 campaign because I’ve watched firsthand how Ann stands up for her constituents. She knows how to reach across the aisle, find common ground and get things done!

If you want to see Ann re-elected to Congress as much as I do, click here to contribute $5 or more TODAY.

Thank you for your continued support of my friend and soon to be colleague, again, Congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick.

Sincerely,

Congresswoman Dina Titus, Nevada

P.S. Please join me in support of Ann Kirkpatrick with a contribution of $5 or more toward her campaign!

Tony,

Do you know what today is?

April 17th is National Equal Pay Day. Women had to work from January 1, 2011 to April 17, 2012 to match what men earned in 2011 alone.

On average, women still earn less than men across the board. And even though women make up 51% of the population in the United States, we hold only 17% of the seats in Congress.

This is just one of the many reasons that we need to keep fighting.

There’s a simple way for you to stay involved. Just click here to join me on Facebook or here to follow me on Twitter, and keep up with everything going on in our campaign.

Middle class families are hurting. We need to create jobs, protect Medicare and Social Security, and continue to develop our renewable energy economy. That’s why I’m in this race, and I would love to keep you up to date.

So make sure you’re following our work! Join me on Facebook and follow me on Twitter today.

Thank you so much for your help. I’ll be in touch.

Shelley

P.S: If you’ve already followed us on Facebook and Twitter, thank you! There’s more you can do to help. Click here to pitch in a few dollars to our campaign today.

Remarks at the Open Government Partnership Opening Session

Remarks

Hillary Rodham Clinton
Secretary of State

Brasilia, Brazil

April 17, 2012

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you very much, and it¡¯s a great pleasure to be here at this first high-level conference of the Open Government Partnership. And I want to commend and thank Brazil, in particular President Rousseff, for the leadership that they have given to this initiative.

As co-chair of the Open Government Partnership for the past year, Brazil and the United States have had a front-row seat to see how swiftly and enthusiastically the community of nations has come together. Fifty-five countries now belong, 47 of which joined in the past eight months alone. A quarter of the world¡¯s people now live in OGP countries, each of which has outlined concrete, credible steps that it will take to open the work of government so citizens are empowered, problems are solved, democracy is strengthened.

I particularly want to thank the Brazilian team. Minister Hage, thank you for your leadership, along with Under Secretary Maria Otero of the State Department. The two of you have worked very hard leading this process, and we are grateful. I want to thank my colleague and friend, the foreign minister of Brazil, and also welcome the other foreign ministers who are representing their country. And we are particularly pleased that the president of Tanzania and the prime minister of Georgia are here, and you will hear from them shortly.

Remarks at the Business Leaders' Lunch

Remarks

Hillary Rodham Clinton
Secretary of State

National Confederation of Industries

Brasilia, Brazil

April 16, 2012

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you very much. And it is, for me, a great pleasure to be here in Brasilia with leaders from government and business who are committed to strengthening the ties between our two countries.

And I am so pleased that I could be here only one week after some of you were in Washington at the event that was held there for businesses and the very successful visit of President Dilma Rousseff to Washington with President Obama. I see some faces that I saw in the crowd at the American Chamber of Commerce when I addressed you just a week ago, which is no surprise to me, because this is such a critical partnership in so many dimensions. And the economic dimension is growing increasingly important, not only to the two countries that are represented here, but indeed to the region and the world.

As many of you know, last year, trade between Brazil and the United States reached nearly $75 billion, much of that in sectors that are driving innovation and creating jobs in both our countries. And Brazilian investment in the United States has grown considerably in recent years, now standing at 15.5 billion, making it one of the largest sources of investment from Latin America.

So this partnership is already benefitting both countries, and I thank the National Confederation of Industry and our co-hosts from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for working to strengthen economic ties. But I’m here because I think we can do so much more. I believe that the opportunities and potential for greater investment, trade, growth, and jobs is only now being tapped.

I was delighted this morning to meet with Gracas Foster, the head of Petrobras, to talk about the exciting future that lies ahead of Brazil because of the extraordinary reserves on your coastline. And this opportunity carries with it a lot of responsibility, which she is shouldering. Of course, for me, it’s exciting to be in a country where the head of your government and the head of your oil company are both led by such visionary, hard-working leaders who happen to be women. That’s a good – another good way in which Brazil is leading.

It was 96 years ago today – this very day – that the U.S. Chamber opened its doors in Brazil. American companies like General Electric were just beginning to explore markets beyond America’s border. And those industrial pioneers knew that doing business in ...

Tony,

If you¡¯ve walked around a neighborhood in Nevada lately, you know how hard we¡¯ve been hit by the recession.

Between job losses, foreclosures, and small business closings -- it¡¯s been hard for many Nevadans to get by.

I know what it¡¯s like to struggle. I know what it¡¯s like to stretch to make ends meet, and to see opportunity so far down the road it seems out of reach.

Lately I have seen too many people struggling to take steps forward, only to be stymied at every possible turn. And I have seen too many of our leaders in Congress ignore the problems of middle class Americans in order to protect their special interest friends.

If there¡¯s one thing I know for certain about the people of Nevada, it¡¯s this -- we always fight back. No matter how hard it seems, no matter how long it takes, we always fight for ourselves and our neighbors.

This month, I¡¯m launching the Nevada Fights Back Fund. Together we can build a campaign geared to fight the special interests and win in the fall. Will you pitch in $10 today?

I am running for Senate to fight back against the right-wing rhetoric and create real solutions for hard-working families everywhere.

We have a clear choice this year.

Are we going to sit back and allow the special interests and corporations to drown out the voices of real people in this election cycle, or will we fight back?

I know that this year, in this election, Nevada will fight back. Contribute $5 or $10 to our Nevada Fights Back Fund today, and help me prove it.

It¡¯s clear that the way Washington, D.C. works right now is not working for the American middle class. I want to be your voice in the Senate, because I know what it¡¯s like.

Thanks for all your support and everything you do.

Dear fellow Wave,

After my family's move from Colombia to the United States, I cleaned houses at the age of twelve to help pay the bills. Today, I serve as Executive Vice President of California Bank and Trust. The distance I have traveled from cleaning houses to senior management at a premiere organization that shares my values would not have been possible without quality education, specifically a Pepperdine education.

I believe we all have the opportunity to make a difference. I have chosen to make a difference through a commitment to education. I believe scholarships specifically are a way of leaving behind a legacy, a way of duplicating ourselves with servant leaders who are empowered to make a difference for others.

Please consider choosing Pepperdine as a place you would like to make a difference. Your financial support communicates your shared belief that:
- Your Pepperdine education was transformational personally and professionally.
- You are committed to supporting Pepperdine leaders of the future.
- The faculty at Pepperdine are brilliant teachers and mentors worthy of support.

I was inspired to learn that beloved professors like Dr. Farzin Madjidi and Dr. June Schmieder-Ramirez, among others, have been quietly funding scholarships at Pepperdine for years. Join them and me in helping others have the same transformational experience we have enjoyed.

Sincerely,

Betty Rengifo Uribe, EdD Candidate '12

Friend --

We now know who our opponent is.

But what we're really fighting against is what our opponent has pledged to do if elected.

He would shower billionaires with more huge tax breaks, oppose setting a timeline to bring our troops home from Afghanistan, starve investments in clean energy research, and make it harder for students to afford to go to college. He'd outlaw a woman's right to choose and completely cut funding for Planned Parenthood.

We can't afford an endless war in Afghanistan, a return to policies that hurt the middle class, and a social agenda from the 1950s.

The stakes and the differences are profound. The outcome of this election will determine the course of this country for decades to come.

I need you by my side.

Wizards-Knicks Preview

By TOM CASTRO | The Associated Press – 4 hours ago

The New York Knicks are coming off a critical victory over their chief pursuer in their battle to make the playoffs. A matchup with the woeful Washington Wizards, however, also could turn out to be a crucial contest.

The Knicks seek their fourth win in five games when they host the Wizards on Friday night, just before a pair of first-place teams visit Madison Square Garden.

New York (30-28) won 111-107 at Milwaukee on Wednesday, moving two games ahead of the Bucks for eighth place in the Eastern Conference with eight games left for both teams. J.R. Smith's 3-pointer with 1:04 left gave the Knicks the lead, and Carmelo Anthony had 32 points and 10 rebounds.

Tyson Chandler added 19 points and 11 boards for New York, which also is one game behind Philadelphia for the seventh spot.

"This is a game we had to have," coach Mike Woodson said.

It's possible Woodson sees Friday's meeting with Washington in similar terms. A home loss to the woeful Wizards (14-44) would leave the Knicks trying to get back on track Sunday against Miami or Tuesday versus Boston, which has won four in a row and 11 of 14.

The Knicks rebounded Wednesday from a defeat at Chicago the previous night to improve to 12-4 under Woodson. They'll now try to avoid a letdown against the Wizards, whom they've beaten eight straight times and twice this season.

New York has won seven in a row in the series at Madison Square Garden, averaging 114.7 points.

NEW YORK -- Carmelo Anthony called it a statement game, and the message should be clear for the Chicago Bulls.

If they do meet in the playoffs, the Bulls better finish off Anthony and the Knicks when they have the chance.

Anthony scored 43 points, his most since coming to New York last February, and made the go-ahead 3-pointer with 8.2 seconds left in overtime as the Knicks spoiled the return to the lineup for a rusty Derrick Rose and beat the Bulls 100-99 on Sunday.

Anthony tied it with a 3 late in regulation and scored the final five points of overtime in his signature performance since coming to New York last February. He only had the chance to pull it out because the Bulls missed four straight free throws in the final 34 seconds of regulation.

"This was a playoff game. We have a chance, we might play these guys in the playoffs if we keep doing what we're doing and get that seed, so this was a big statement game for us and we willed this one tonight," Anthony said.

It had the look and sound of a playoff game in the tense final minutes at a frenzied Madison Square Garden. The loudest roars went to Anthony, who screamed "This is my house!" after the second 3-pointer in a place where he heard boos just last month.

He said Sunday's big basket was one of the best of his career.

Anthony has 43, Knicks top Bulls in Rose¡¯s return

By BRIAN MAHONEY, AP Basketball Writer7 hours, 22 minutes ago

NEW YORK (AP)¡ªCarmelo Anthony called it a statement game, and the message should be clear for the Chicago Bulls.

NOTES: Lin said before the game he was feeling good after surgery on his left knee Monday but didn¡¯t think he could return in time for the first round of the playoffs. ¡ The Knicks hired former Knicks forward Larry Johnson as a basketball and business operations representative on Sunday. Johnson, who played with the Knicks from 1996-01 and converted a memorable four-point play in the 1999 Eastern Conference finals against Indiana, will focus on player development and be involved in numerous business initiatives. ¡ Jared Jeffries returned for the Knicks after missing eight games with a sore right knee.

From my family to yours, Chag Pesach Sameach, Christos Anesti, and Happy Easter.

Sincerely,

Dina

Anthony leads Knicks past reeling Magic 96-80

By KYLE HIGHTOWER, Associated Press2 hours, 54 minutes ago

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP)?The New York Knicks seemed to be the NBA?s resident team-in-turmoil last month, stumbling through coaching issues and their second prolonged losing streak of the season.

In their second matchup with Orlando in just over a week, it was the Knicks that took advantage of a team caught up in off-court drama for a 96-80 win over the Magic on Thursday night.

Carmelo Anthony scored 19 points, and Tyson Chandler had 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead New York past a Magic team that appears to be sliding headfirst back into the soap opera that has trailed center Dwight Howard all season.
