I have received countless emails, letters and phone calls from Nevadans urging Congress to provide them with assistance in their time of need, which is why I was proud to lead the Senate in passing a long-term extension of unemployment benefits yesterday. This important legislation will help stimulate the economy and assist Nevadans who are struggling to pay the bills and support their families. Please click here to hear my remarks after its passage. This is welcome news for many families in Nevada and across the nation. But it should have never taken so long to get the support they deserve. I am terribly disappointed that, with the exception of my two colleagues from Maine, Republicans dragged this process out for weeks and weeks. Despite the fact that that Congressional Budget Office reported the money we spend on unemployment benefits will return to us twofold, Republicans repeatedly refused to extend this emergency assistance and then, after they lost the debate and the checks were written, they decided to keep us from putting them in the mail. However, with yesterday's vote, Senate Democrats have outlasted Republicans' delays and emergency assistance for millions around the country who are depending on it to afford basic necessities is on its way. Last week the Senate passed historic legislation that will protect consumers and taxpayers from Wall Street’s greedy behavior. The recklessness of Big Wall Street banks cost Nevadans their jobs, their homes and their life savings. And when they got into trouble, they came to us asking to bail them out. This week, I had the opportunity to witness an important event that will relieve the grief on Main Streets throughout Nevada and across America: President Obama signing the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. This legislation will help return Nevada to what it was economically a few years ago, while ensuring that no bank grows too big to fail and that Nevada taxpayers never again have to bail them out. Starting now, big banks on Wall Street will finally be held accountable and middle-class families will be empowered with the information they need to make sound financial decisions for themselves and their families. We’re giving Wall Street the strongest oversight it’s ever had ?not to stifle it, but to safeguard us. Without this reform, we would be inviting another economic crisis to happen all over again. That was not a gamble I was willing to take. I will keep fighting to ensure that families in Nevada and across America never again have to pay the price for Wall Street’s reckless, risky behavior. This week in the Senate we are working to pass legislation that will help small businesses in Nevada and across the country that are struggling to access the capital they need to expand and hire more workers. The Small Business Jobs and Credit Act (H.R.5297) will give small businesses the tax relief and credit they so desperately need to not only weather this economic storm, but to grow and thrive. This legislation targets the unique needs of small businesses through a combination of tax credits, enhancements to Small Business Administration (SBA) lending programs, and initiatives that promote access to capital through community banks and state-run small business lending programs. I have been a longtime supporter of small businesses because they spur innovation, job creation and competition among the global market. We must do all we can to foster the right conditions for entrepreneurs to start and invest in small business and create jobs. The Small Business Jobs and Credit Act will equip small businesses with the tools they need to help sustain both Nevada’s and the nation’s economic recovery. We have much more work ahead to create jobs, strengthen our economy and support middle-class families. We want to offer money, advice, or a way out of a mess. However, if God is not ready to have the problem patched up, then the believer who repairs it gets himself into a fix. The Lord will discipline a Christian who obstructs His work in another person¡¯s life. Love can blind us to the fact that God bring a person to a position of utter desperation so that she will give up her self-sufficiency. Only when His strength is manifested in her weakness does she finally know what it means to rely upon God. We do not want to hinder such an essential lesson! Our heavenly Father¡¯s ways often do not make sense to humans. We wonder how pain could be the means of bringing about spiritual victory. Yet His greatest triumph¡ªovercoming sin and death¡ªwas achieved through Jesus Christ¡¯s sacrifice, which involved physical and emotional anguish. And the example in the paragraph above helps us understand why God uses hardship to mature believers: Hurt and despair often strip away the ¡°props¡± we depend on and expose our need for a Savior. Swindoll Leviticus 11:44-45 As Christians we live a life that is different---morally excellent, ethically beautiful. It's called a holy life. And God honors that. Because it's like He is. And according to Ephesians 5:1, we are to mimic God, living as He lives. All of our Christian lives we have sung the old hymn "Take Time to Be Holy." Those words are true. It does take time to be holy. It certainly takes time to be mature. It takes time to cultivate a walk with the Lord that begins to flow naturally, because the enemy is so much more assertive and powerful than we . . . and so creative, so full of new ideas on how to derail us and demoralize us. We need to lock onto that power that comes from God's presence and invite Him to cleanse our thoughts, to correct our foul speech, to forgive us completely, and make us holy vessels who, like those winged seraphim, spend our days bringing glory to His holy name. Take a really honest look at your walk. Are there any areas where old sins have begun to take control again? This would be a wonderful time to allow Him to bring fresh order out of longstanding chaos. God has called us to be holy, so let's be holy. You have come to Pakistan at a very difficult time. Perhaps it’s always a difficult time in Pakistan, but terror attacks, increasing security threats, and attacks in Afghanistan at the same time, and the relationship between the two. How can you persuade the Pakistanis to step up to the challenge and do more about the insurgents based here who are attacking our forces in Afghanistan? SECRETARY CLINTON: Well, Andrea, I think we’ve made progress in the last 17, 18 months. We have certainly seen a change in attitude on the part of the Pakistani Government. When I became Secretary of State, there was very little action on the part of the Pakistani military against any terrorist group, and I made the case then that we had seen the development of a kind of syndicate of terror and there weren’t the lines between these groups that perhaps in the past there had been. So we’ve seen a lot of positive action. We are always asking for more, because we think these groups pose a direct threat to Pakistan, to Afghanistan, and then beyond their borders to the United States and others. So we’re not satisfied, but we do see that there’s been progress made. QUESTION: There’s a lot of mutual suspicion and distrust to overcome. And in fact, we have yet to see them really go after – hard after some of the insurgents who are causing so much trouble in Afghanistan. SECRETARY CLINTON: Well, we’ve seen increasing efforts on the part of the Pakistanis. It is not what we want or what we believe is in the interests of stability in both Afghanistan and Pakistan. We’re all pushing very hard. But in order to fill the trust deficit that I identified during my trip last year, it takes a lot of little steps that add up. So our Strategic Dialogue, which we have enhanced and broadened, is creating confidence and building some trust between our two governments’ experts and others. The constant exchanges of information between our military and civilian leaders with theirs has begun to build a level of candor that, frankly, was missing. I know how impatient I am and I know how impatient Americans are, because, obviously, we do not want to see another attack coming out of Pakistan and we’ve been quite lucky in foiling a number of them, as you know. But we just have to stay at it every single day. And slowly but surely, we’re beginning to create a relationship that I think will lead to some of the tough choices that have to be made.
