The integrity and innovation to enhance our service in this section By Mark Denton, Valerie Weber, and Jennifer Kung***** "John F. Kennedy was a living example of Mitchell Kapor's belief that, 'If you can genuinely present a picture that makes sense to people, that unifies the seemingly disperate elements of their experience, if you can give people something they can resonate with because it's meaningful, then they'll be immensely responsive to it.' JFK presented that picture and America responded." *1 "All, from the greast to humblest, must work together in harmony and devotion. We can make no advances with only solo work. Unless the solooists and the members of the chorus are ready to work together in harmony, there can be no symphony," said Jackson Wilcox *2 "Since I shall be in Washington, D.C., I believe that I shall be constantly reminded of the ideals that are the subject of the messages and quotations contained in your correspondence, particularly those about vision, enthusiasm, and assistance," wrote Nevada District Judge Mark R. Denton to Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) on June 18, 2007 in Las Vegas, Nevada.*3 ... ..... ....... -------------------------------------------- ******************************************** | |

>>>>>121906-5017 Tong Liu and Gerry Liu: cross-cultural and community service are our distinctions By Michael Douglas, Cheryl Moss, Valerie Weber, and Tiffany Chang*1***** "Those who trust us, educate us." --- George Eliot ***** No man can be rich without himself enriching others. ---Andrew Carnegie ***** The ultimate responsibility of a leader is to facilitate other people's development as well as his own. ---Fred Pryor The following is the interview by Tiffany Chang to Tong Liu, Senior Pastor of River of Life Christian Church (ROLCC) and Gerry Liu, Chairman of the Board of Directors of ROLCC, from Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI): Q: By comparing to other Chinese Churches, what you think are the uniqueness of River of Life Christian Church? Tong: One of the significant unique characters is our emphasis on cross-cultural. We have Chinese services and English service. We serve people from all nations. An innovation of ours is the endeavor to strengthen the united efforts of all the local churches. We're interested to do the righteous work jointly with many other churches locally. Why we have such a mission? It is because we sincerely love our God and people. Gerry: In the first place, we have the nice plan from our God. We expect to put our efforts to make River of Life Christian Church a mega church. How? I think the most important thing is to have our Church fueled with both human and financial resources. In the second place, we endeavored to build our services as a bridge of the mutual cooperation and development between English and Chinese cultures. In the third place, we're launching our mission of integrity with the mainstream through local governments. Q. What are your current plans for River of Life Christian Church? Tong: Our main mission for our current plans will be the endeavor of community service. The significance of community service to our people, land, and country has been recognized by many leaders in each and every field of professionalism all around the United States . It's our pleasure to put community service as a priority in our current mission. To function it effectively, we have our cell groups as the frontiers. The whole thing is initiated by our love for God. Gerry: The 2006 theme of this Church is "Arise & shine - Prepare the way of the Lord". Our next year's theme will be "Lighting of the Country". In the coming ten years, we'll endeavor to build love all around our neighborhoods. We have 105 cell groups and 14 zones. The grass roots of our people are numerous and sincere. Through the cooperation with the local governments, we're expecting to extend our love to the whole country. Q. Can you tell us a little about the development of your educational leadership program? Tong: We have a two-year educational curriculum for people who are interested in having advanced study in ministries. A program with extensive subjects has been designed for our on the job training. It's on a monthly training basis. The evening classes meet every Tuesday and Thursday. Gerry: Our elegant plan, which will be launched for next year, is the Pastoral Leadership Program School. We'll plan it as a comprehensive study on pastoral leadership for our future leaders in ministries. Q. In order to develop the Church's international perspectives, what are your plans and endeavor? Tong: On the first place, we have done many of our short term missions very successfully. We'll continue our effort to do them better. It's quite fruitful in each and every of our missionary trips. We have gone to many different places and have seen their needs. We have shared with their burdens through our brotherly love. In the second place, we'll continue our planning and implementation of our diversified ministry conferences. We'll share God's love and experience the growth of our faith through our future comprehensive conferences. In the third place, we plan to emphasize the development of the ministry faith pledge. Gerry: My findings on the building of an international perspective for our Church are: (1) In this 21 century, an international perspective for an organization is vital to its existence and development. (2) We need to put more effort in recruiting rich human and financial resources. Q. What's your expectation on the functions of the search engine leaders to the River of Life Christian Church? Tong: It's our pleasure that the search engine leaders have contributed a great deal to our websites. Google did very well. We hope they can put our "Devotion Hotline" on the internet for the mass public. A cooperation and development between ROLCC and WBTI through the functions of search engine leaders such as Google.cn, Yahoo.cn, AOl.com will bring with a bright future for many individuals locally, nationally, and internationally.*2 Gerry: (1) We have good websites. In order to be more successful for our websites, we need also to be favored by the search engine leaders. (2) To win their publications of our information every week is a good accomplishment. I'm glad WBTI and ROLCC deserve the honor.*3 "It's my great honor to be named by President Dr. Tony Lei as the Honorary Chairman of Clark County District and Police Civil Commission (CCDAPCC) of Washington Business and Technolgy Institute (WBTI)," pointed out the Chief Justice of Nevada Supreme Court William Maupin at the Celebration Party to "Nevada Examiner" and "Reviewjournal.com" at the Steak House of Binion's Horseshoe Club, Las Vegas on October 10, 2002. The Party was held by WBTI to celebrate William Maupin's being appointed as its Fellow of the Public Administration Institution (PAI) and as its Honorary Chairman of the Clark County District Attorney and Police Civil Commission (CCDAPCC). "Please know that I irrevocably stand by my personal commitment to diversity issues in this state and that my sense of patriotism and faith in America stems from its embrace of that diversity." "We need many kinds of people in God's kindom. Some are to seize the enemy's camps; some are to hold the fields; some are to provide for the needs; and some are to produce behind the scene. Nevertheless, we are standing together to work for God's kingdom. Therefore, I want to thank everyone who faithfully support the mission work last year. Because of your support, we are able to support 34 mission organizations/missionaries and establish 43 daughter churches in the world. There are 700 people gathering together in difference locations worshiping the Lord every week. We are thankful and give God all the glory," pointed out Rev. Tong Liu at ROLCC on November 5, 2006. "This year is the 200 Anniversary when missionary Morrison entered China. We will pray for the mssion work in China. God uses many western missionaries in the past to bring gospels to China. Now is the time for Chinese churches to rise up to win nations for the Lord." House in Las Vegas. "Then the angel showed me the river of water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations." It has been shown by the leading search engines on Internet remarkably: The first paragraph of this article was a profile of Dr. Sun-Yuan Kung. It was found by searching "Dr. Sun-Yuan Kung" on the Google.com: Professor Sun-Yuan Kung*3 Homepage Email: [???] Abstract of talk Sun-Yuan Kung received his Ph.D. Degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. In 1974, he was an Associate Engineer of Amdahl Corporation, Sunnyvale, CA. From 1977 to 1987, he was a Professor of Electrical Engineering-Systems of the University of Southern California. Since 1987, he has been a Professor of Electrical Engineering at the Princeton University. Since 1990, he has served as an Editor-In-Chief of Journal of VLSI Signal Processing Systems. Dr. Kung is a Fellow of IEEE. He was the recipient of 1992 IEEE Signal Processing Society's Technical Achievement Award for his contributions on "parallel processing and neural network algorithms for signal processing". He was appointed as an IEEE-SP Distinguished Lecturer in 1994. He received 1996 IEEE Signal Processing Society's Best Paper Award. Sun-Yuan was a recipient of the IEEE Third Millennium Medal in 2000. Dr. Sun-Yuan Kung has authored more than 300 technical publications, including three books "VLSI Array Processors", (Prentice Hall, 1988) (with Russian and Chinese translations), "Digital Neural Networks", Prentice Hall, 1993, and "Principal Component Neural Networks'', John Wiley, 1996.*4 Sun-Yuan was a Kenote Speaker at The First IEEE Pacific-Rim Conference on Multimedia (2000 International Symposium on Multimedia Information Processing) on December 13-15, 2000, at the University of Sydney, Australia. Dr. Sun-Yuan Kung presented a paper at the IEEE-PCM2000 plenary. The title was "Adaptive Techniques for Intelligent Internet Multimedia Communication".*5 The following was his Abstract: The new trend of information processing world has rapidly converged to three major technological fields: internet, multimedia, and wireless. In this talk, we will attempt to offer a technological and applicational justification of intelligent technologies for internet multimedia computing/communication. We shall also illuminate how intelligent integration of signal processing and neural net techniques could be a versatile tool to a broad spectrum of multimedia applications. Some examples of adaptive techniques (or neural networks) with applications to internet multimedia commuincation will be demonstrated.*6 Multimedia technologies will profoundly change the way we access information, and they provide a new opportunity for research interactions among a variety of media such as speech, audio, image, video, text, and graphics. The inevitable merger of the computer industries and information-based consumer and communication industries inevitably introduces new challenges. We investigate various research issues relevant to intelligent multimedia communication applications and implementation technology. We study various adaptive and content-based technologies for MPEG-4 applications, such as compression, indexing, and retrieval of visual information. We look into various areas in video coding and segmentation, including true-motion tracker, global-motion compensated VOP (video-object-plane) coding, video representation, multicue, and multicamera fusion, three-dimensional structure-from-motion analysis, and spatial-temporal interpolation. We study an algorithmic framework that fuses spatial, visual, and motion information from a variety of preprocessing sources: object tracker, motion edge analysis, and so on.*7 Neural networks have become one of the core techniques facilitating intelligent multimedia communication technologies. They are very effective when applied to detection or recognition of high-level features (for example, faces) and multimodality recognition and authentication. These have many critical applications to information representation/retrieval and Internet security, and many focal applications in MPEG-7. For these, we have developed a versatile decision-based neural network that bears a modular structure, while taking advantage of both unsupervised and supervised learning strategies. We look into novel neural network techniques on multisensor classification, hierarchical processing, probabilistic (fuzzy) neural networks, object detection and tracking, and content-based compression and representation. Another major challenge lies in real-time processing speed, a key barrier before online access of massive visual information can become a reality. In fact, it is communication, instead of computing, that will be the processing bottleneck. Thus, the development of the computer technology must be closely intertwined with the information-based consumer and communication technologies. We have studied for a long time the research issues involving design and implementation of VLSI multimedia signal processing circuits and systems. Novel communication and networking technologies will be critical in order for multimedia database systems to support interactive dynamic interfaces. Truly integrated media systems must connect with individual users and content-addressable multimedia databases. This will involve both logical connections to support information-sharing and physical connection via computer networking and data transfer. Our research stresses hierarchical and scalable multimedia architecture platforms, fast architectures by minimizing memory accesses and IO operations, and systematically mapping multimedia algorithms to the new architectures. Ultimately, our research will support development of real-time information-processing systems combining digital video and audio, text, and graphics.*8 Secretary of the U. S. Department of Labor, Elaine L. Chao sent a message to speakers and attendees of Emerging Information Technology Conference. Secretary of the U. S. Department of Labor, Elaine L. Chao wrote a message to speakers and attendees of Emerging Information Technology Conference (EITC 2002), the letter was presented by her representative in this region, Ms. Angelica O. Tang in the EITC Luncheon Brown Bag Talks. "Our ancestors' dreams inspired them to cross a wide ocean in search of opportunity and prosperity. As the EITC so admirably represents, more and more Chinese Americans are taking their rightful place in this country's science and engineering professions, combining their individual talents with the rich cultural values of family and education. I am pleased to share with you that since taking office, President George W. Bush has demonstrated his commitment to our community by naming more than 90 Asian Pacific American appointees. Nineteen of these positions are Presidential appointments requiring Senate confirmation including, for the first time in our nation's history, two Asian Pacific Americans to the Cabinet. I am also pleased that at the U.S. Department of Labor, I have appointed the highest number of Asian Pacific Americans to top leadership positions. My team and I have launched a number of initiatives, ranging from small business development to training grants, to assist the growing Asian Pacific American community," Secretary Chao said in her letter. Ms. Tang presented Secretary Chao's letter to EITC Conference Program Chair, Dr. Mow S. Lin of Brookhaven National Laboratory. Ms. Tang was also greeted by Princeton Township Mayor Phyllis L. Marchand, and EITC Conference co-chairs, Dr. Chun-Yen Chang, Professor and President of National Chiao Tung University, and Dr. Sun-Yuan Kung, Professor of Princeton University, as well as the EITC speakers and attendees.*9 Dr. Sun-Yuan Kung is now a tenure Professor of Electrical Engineering at the Princeton University. It is our pleasure to pay a tribute to the expertise, professionalism, and accomplishment of an excellent scholar and professor.*10 It is clever to share with the following short but meaningful quotes that we mentioned in our previous articles: "Six essential qualities that are keys to success: Sincerity, Personal Integrity, Humility, Courtesy, Wisdom, Charity." ---Dr. William Menninger "We are all faced with a series of great opportunities brilliantly disguised as impossible situations." ---Chuck Swindoll "Accomplishment will prove to be a journey, not a destination." ---Dwight D. To protect Medicare beneficiaries from looming cuts By Shelley Berkley*1Dear Tony, Given your interest in preventing the impending cuts to Medicare payments for physician services, I thought you would be interested in seeing this letter I have sent to Speaker Hastert urging immediate Congressional action.*2 (Signiture) SHELLEY BERKLEY Member of Congress November 30, 2006 The Honorable J. Dennis Hastert Speaker United States House of Representatives H232 United States Capitol Washington, DC 20515 Dear Mr. Speaker, I wrote to you this past September urging Congressional action to protect Medicare beneficiaries from looming cuts. Without intervention, payment under the Medicare sustainable growth formula (SGR) for physician services and health care professionals will be cut by 5.1 percent as of January 1, 2007. The 109th Congress will soon end and I am very concerned that this serious problem has not been addressed. These cuts destabilize Medicare and put millions of Medicare beneficiaries—including the frail, elderly, and infirm—at risk of losing their coverage. If these cuts are not reversed before the end of this Congress, the 2007 Medicare physician rates will have fallen 20 percent below increases in physicians?costs since 2001. At the same time that Medicare payments go down, physician practice costs are increasing. The American Medical Association estimates that these costs will increase over 20 percent by 2015. These cuts are especially glaring when compared to other medical providers who have received consistent updates that keep pace with increasing costs. Hospital and nursing home payments are slated to continue to rise by more than 3 percent annually and payments to Medicare Advantage plans are estimated to increase by 7.1 percent in 2007. Continued uncertainty about Medicare reimbursements or a reduction in Medicare payments discourages physicians from entering specialties that primarily treat Medicare patients. Nevada’s 273,448 Medicare beneficiaries comprised 11 percent of the state’s population in 2005. Failing to adjust the physician reimbursement schedule restricts access to quality healthcare for those who need it most. Tue, March 1, 2011 1:21:02 PMSecretary's Remarks: 50th Anniversary of the Peace Corps by Hillary R. ClintonFrom: U.S. Department of State [usstatebpa@subscriptions.fcg.gov]View Contact To: tojulei@yahoo.com Secretary's Remarks: 50th Anniversary of the Peace Corps Tue, 01 Mar 2011 13:45:35 -0600 50th Anniversary of the Peace Corps Press Statement Hillary Rodham Clinton Secretary of State Washington, DC March 1, 2011 Fifty years ago a pilot program called the Peace Corps started with President Kennedy~{!/~}s signature, led by Sargent Shriver and fueled by the compassion and generosity of the American people. Today this is the foundation of a public service movement that represents the best the United States has to offer. More than 8,600 Peace Corps volunteers from all 50 states serve in 77 countries as community leaders, teachers and mentors. They are united by a desire to create a more peaceful, prosperous world from the ground up. Peace Corps volunteers make a difference, whether it is teaching in a classroom, distributing bed nets to assist in malaria prevention, or sharing ideas that inspire the planet~{!/~}s young people. As Secretary of State, I was fortunate to swear-in a group of new volunteers who are now serving in the Philippines. I have seen firsthand the enthusiasm of volunteers and staff in Guatemala, Ukraine, the Kyrgyz Republic, Cambodia and in other countries around the world. I have met volunteers who are old and young, first generation Americans, and the sons and daughters of returned volunteers. In Morocco, I met volunteer Muriel Johnston, who at 86 years old encourages all of us to think about what we can accomplish at any age. Peace Corps volunteers represent the diversity of our great country and share one common attribute: they inspire millions of people around the world to think about what we can accomplish together. Every day, I work with dedicated colleagues at the State Department and USAID, many of whom paved the foundation for their careers in the Foreign Service and civil service with their years in the Peace Corps. The Peace Corps taught them compassion, patience, and continues to bridge cross-cultural divides. On this 50th anniversary, the United States honors the over 200,000 Americans who have answered the call to serve and thanks the 139 countries that have welcomed Peace Corps volunteers as family and friends for half a century. Let us take this opportunity to remember President Kennedy and Sargent Shriver~{!/~}s vision and rededicate ourselves to a world of deeper cultural understanding where every man, woman and child has the opportunity to live up to his or her potential.
