Like sticks of dynamite taped together with a short fuse, our times are really volatile. Anger is ready to explode into physical violence at the slightest provocation. This entire globe seems brimming with hair-trigger hostility, ready to flare into full-scale disaster.
It's not just a vast global problem, however. It's personal. It's in your neighborhood. Your school. Where you work. Home security systems are no longer considered a luxury for the rich. Even teachers are not safe in the classroom.
But I must confess, the final straw of shock came when I read of the murder of John White in a quiet neighborhood in southwest Cleveland. The killer? A nineteen-year-old hired by White's two kids. That's right. His seventeen-year-old son and fourteen-year-old daughter paid $60 to have their own father killed.
The teenagers paid off the murderer, then hid the body in a back room of the house. After that they used their dad's credit cards to go on a ten-day spending spree. While their father's body was decaying in the utility room, they were cooking meals in the kitchen a few feet away and enjoying themselves in the living room.
After being caught, they openly confessed the entire, bizarre event. When asked why, they answered: "He wouldn't let us do anything we wanted." The dad had angered the kids by trying to enforce an evening curfew and by not allowing them to quit school or "smoke pot." So they had him killed.
Centuries ago, in a stone dungeon, the apostle Paul wrote his last few sentences. Yet, today, they stab us awake with incredible relevance: "But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be . . . arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy . . . brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless" (2 Tim. 3:1-4).
The Greek term he chose for "difficult times" means, literally, "fierce, harsh, hard to deal with, savage." It is used only one other time in the New Testament, when it describes two demon-possessed men as "extremely violent" (Matt. 8:28).
An apt description of our times. Yet there is a glimmer of hope amid this flood of violence. It is this: Christ's coming cannot be far away. These "last days" of pain---though they may seem to pass slowly---are daily reminders that our redemption draws near. And "we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye" (1 Cor. 15:51-52).
Like, fast. Really fast. Faster than a short fuse on sticks of dynamite.
When everything looks hopeless, we have the comfort of our eternal Hope.

GOVERNOR GIBBONS NAMES TOM LOZICH TO HOMELAND SECURITY COMMISSION
***** Governor Jim Gibbons has announced the appointment of MGM MIRAGE Corporate Security and Surveillance Executive Director Tom Lozich to the Nevada Commission on Homeland Security. Lozich joined MGM MIRAGE after a thirty-year career with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department where he rose to the ranks of Captain, then Deputy Chief, and finally Assistant Sheriff.
�The Nevada Commission on Homeland Security plays a vital role in the public safety of Nevada citizens and visitors,� Governor Gibbons said, �Tom�s experience will be a valuable asset to the Commission.�

On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I salute the people of Haiti and Haitians living in Diaspora communities around the world as you celebrate Flag Day.
The Haitian flag was created on May 18th, 1803, in the town of Arcahaie during a congress held in the midst of the country~{!/~}s war for independence. By removing the middle white stripe of the French tricolor, symbolizing European domination, and stitching together the remaining red and blue stripes, representing Haiti~{!/~}s black and interracial citizens, the flag came to embody your nation~{!/~}s spirit of freedom, unity, and individual liberty.
In the aftermath of January~{!/~}s devastating earthquake, it took on new resonance. The world rallied around the Haitian flag in an unprecedented outpouring of generosity and support. And like the stitched-together stripes of the flag, the Haitian people joined in solidarity to confront the challenges facing your country.
Today~{!/~}s celebrations across Haiti and the Diaspora community are a testament to your resilience and determination even during the most challenging time. As we commemorate Flag Day, we must pay special tribute to those Haitians who despite having lost so much continue to work to build a stronger, more prosperous nation and a better tomorrow.
As the flag inspired an earlier generation of Haitians in their struggle for freedom, may it now inspire all of us to work for Haiti~{!/~}s future. The United States will continue to stand with you as a friend and partner. And we send you our warmest wishes on this special day.

Defying the Odds!!

Reader alert: [I wrote this back when Lenny Dykstra was playing for the Mets. But the truth still applies.] No offense, but Lenny Dykstra doesn't look like much of an athlete. He looks more like some team's mascot. Or like the guy who wears that silly chicken suit and does cartwheels around stadiums. The kid can't stand much more than five-seven. That little Dutch boy is the starting center fielder for the National League New York Mets. Nicknamed "Nails"---as in "tough as" and "harder than."
With game three of the 1986 National League Championship Series fairly boring and all but over---bottom of the ninth, Mets losing---veteran Houston Astros' reliever Dave Smith must have smiled inside as the little guy walked up to the plate. Dykstra fouled off Smith's stinging fastball, and then, without hesitation, he slammed the next one over the fence. We're talking Big Apple Explosion!
As LA Times sportswriter Gordon Edes put it: "His you-gotta-believe-it, two-run home run gave the Mets a 6-5 win and transformed Shea Stadium---as polite as Carnegie Hall for most of the overcast afternoon---into a high-fivin', Astro-defyin', bring-on-the-World-Series-jivin' madhouse."
I always sit up and take notice when odds are defied. We all do, don't we? That's why we pull for the underdog. And why we never tire of the David-and-Goliath story. Or the way those walls fell flat at Jericho. Or the crossing of the Red Sea. Or Daniel standing nose-to-nose with a den full of hungry lions.
It's no big deal for huge hunks of humanity to hit homers. But when the little fella smashes one over four hundred feet, that's news.
Why? Because that gives all of us hope. If he can do that, surrounded by all those towering odds stacked against him, then there's hope for me, facing all my odds. It's like getting a shot of fresh motivation in both arms.
Want to defy the odds? Aim high. Forget "I can't."
Or, in baseball parlance, get hold of that bat, step up to the plate, and slam that sucker outa the park!
"But the bravest are surely those who have the clearest vision of what is before them, glory and danger alike, and yet not withstanding go out to meet it" (Thucydides).
