Step Forward Day 2011

Back-to-School Celebration/Adopt-a-Student Drive

Dear Alumni,

GSEP’s Alumni Relations Office is pleased to announce its 5th annual Step Forward Day service project benefiting the children at Hope Gardens in Sylmar, CA.

Hope Gardens is operated by Union Rescue Mission, and is part of GSEP’s Urban Initiative. It is a non-profit organization providing shelter, food, and support to homeless women and children. Since 2007, Pepperdine has been a source of hope and encouragement to the school- aged children in residence at Hope Gardens as they embark on a new school year, by providing them with new backpacks and school supplies.

This year, Hope Gardens is home to over 50 students, grades K – 11, who are in need of essential items for school. By adopting a student from Hope Gardens, you not only prepare them to do their best, but you provide the message that you believe in them. In previous years, we have been able to provide each and every student with school supplies, and we hope to keep up that success. The cost of a backpack and supplies may range from $40- $60 depending on the age of the child. You might consider partnering with someone else in our community to share the shopping and expenses.

If you wish to adopt-a-student at Hope Gardens, please contact me at jermaine.pearson@pepperdine.edu or 310-568-5510 by September 3rd. I will give you the name of a Hope Gardens’ student and the list of items they will need for school so that you may purchase a backpack of supplies and deliver it to the West LA campus by September 8th. Our team of Pepperdine volunteers will bring the backpacks to Hope Gardens on September 10th when we will host a Back to School Celebration with activities for the all the children and their moms. If you would like to volunteer on September 10th, from 9AM to 1PM, please email me and I will send you a volunteer form and more details.

On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I am delighted to send best wishes to all Malaysians as you celebrate Malaysia’s fifty-fourth Independence Day this August 31.

The United States values the close relations between our two countries and peoples. When I visited Malaysia last November, I met with young people, entrepreneurs, political leaders and representatives of civil society, whose eagerness to engage with Americans will foster even greater collaboration and understanding between our countries in the years to come. As Malaysia continues to strive toward becoming a high income economy by 2020, we look forward to expanding U.S.-Malaysia relations to bring greater prosperity to our countries.

As you celebrate this special day with family, friends and loved ones, know that the United States stands with you as a committed partner and friend. I wish all Malaysians around the world a Happy Merdeka Day.

Crucible for Christ

Read 1 Kings 17:8--9

As we did earlier, let's first examine the significance of the name of this place where the prophet was told to go. Zarephath comes from a Hebrew verb that means "to melt, to smelt." Interestingly, in noun form it means "crucible." The place may have gotten its name because there was a smelting plant located somewhere near there; we don't know for sure. But whatever the source of its name, Zarephath would prove to be a "crucible" for Elijah---a place designed by God to further refine the prophet and make a major difference in the remainder of his life.

It was almost as if the Lord were saying to His servant, "I first took you to Cherith to wean you away from the bright lights and the public platform, where I could cut you down to size and reduce you to a man who would trust Me, regardless. It was there I began to renovate your inner man through the disciplines of solitude, silence, and obscurity. But now it's time to do an even deeper work. Now, Elijah, I will turn up the heat in the furnace and melt you so that I might mold you far more exactly into the kind of man I need to fulfill the purposes I have in mind."

If you walk with the Lord long enough, you will discover that His tests often come back-to-back. Or perhaps it would be even more accurate to say back to back to back to back to back. Usually, His preparatory tests don't stop with one or two. They multiply. And as soon as you climb out of one crucible thinking, "Okay, I made it through that one," you're plunged into another, where the flame is even hotter.

Crucibles create Christlikeness. This is precisely what the hymn writer had in mind when he wrote:

The flame shall not hurt thee; I only design,
Thy dross to consume and thy gold to refine.¹

That's what a crucible does. That's what a furnace does. It brings all the impurities to the surface so that they can be skimmed off, leaving greater purity.

On Friday night (in November 2005), ARCC (Asian Republicans of Clark County) hosted a mixer downtown and invited Lorraine Hunt, Lt. Governor to be the keynote speaker. Among 46 VIP guests were Steve Marin, CCRP Treasurer, Paul Adams, Chairman of NV Republican Party, John Hambrick, Chairman of Clark Co., Francis Allen, Valerie Weber, both Assemblywomen, and NV Supreme Ct. Justice, Michael Douglas.

Dr. Jas Brooks, ARCC President, welcome all guests and introduced other Executive Board Members including Hui-Lim Ang, Acting V.P.; Mae Cruz, 1st Secretary; Dr. Tony Lei, Chairman of Press Committee, and Cassandra Cheung, Director of Public Relations.

In the speech, Lorraine Hunt mentioned about her continued effort to promote the economic development by initiating the direct flights from Asia to Nevada and better the educational system in Nevada. By ending her speech, Lorraine Hunt urged everyone to registrar to vote. The Lt. Governor is running for the Governor. Her future 1st Gentleman, Dennis Bono, seconded the motion.
