Congresswoman Shelley Berkley - Representing Nevada's 1st Congressional District

Dear Tony,

As your representative in the U.S. Congress and a tireless advocate for the needs of our veterans in southern Nevada, I wanted to take this opportunity to share with you the plans for a new United Services Organization (USO) airport center at McCarran Airport.

I have been working with USO and local supporters of this project since 2005 and am so pleased that this lounge is now going to become a reality. As someone who flies in and out of Las Vegas every week, I hear all the time from troops at the airport about their desire to see a USO location added at McCarran.
Below, I share a laugh with one of our brave soldiers
as we assemble care packages for our troops abroad.

The USO care packages contain treats for our troops
like snacks and games, as well as essentials like toiletries
and phone cards to call home with.

USO airport centers provide information and assistance to military personnel and their families, as well as an area to relax and visit with loved ones. The facility at McCarran will be a great service to countless heroes in uniform as they pass through our local airport and visit this USO site where we can say, "Welcome to Las Vegas." It will also provide privacy for military families as they say goodbye to sons and daughters, moms and dads, spouses and children.

USO provides countless valuable services to our men and women in uniform, and on Wednesday I joined members of USO to assemble care packages to be sent to our troops who are deployed abroad. Those who serve in America's armed forces are asked to make sacrifices for our nation and this event was another opportunity to thank these brave men and women.

It is a privilege to continue to serve you - and every veteran in this community. Thank you for your service to our country. I wanted to share this letter I sent to my colleagues in Congress today regarding the high cost of nuclear power and the negative results of pursuing an energy policy based on nuclear power. I hope you find it informative.

Nuclear power is not the answer to America's energy needs. As a nation, we should be investing in truly clean energy sources, not repeating our past mistakes by again subsidizing the construction and operation of new nuclear reactors. In addition to the enormous cost of building and operating a new reactor fleet, there remains no safe means for the disposal of toxic high-level radioactive waste created by nuclear power generation.

U. S. Congresswoman Shelley Berkley was first elected to the U. S. House of Representatives in November, 1998. She won the election continuously every two years. Shelley represents constituents living in the First Congressional District of Nevada, including residents of Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, and unincorporated areas in Clark County. The District annually records the largest population increase in the nation. U. S. Congresswoman Shelley Berkley has A Lifetime of Commitment to Nevada.
She has lived in Las Vegas for over four decades. Shelley has a deep sense of commitment to give back to the community that opened the doors of opportunity for her. Shelley is a former Vice Chair of the Nevada University and Community College System Board of Regents. Appointed to the Board in 1990 by the Governor, she was then twice elected as a Regent by Las Vegas-area voters. She completed her second term on the Board in 1998. Throughout her tenure, Shelley worked to keep higher education in Nevada affordable and accessible to all qualified students.
This bright lady has devoted her energies to charitable and civic efforts ever since she was a teenager. Her work and ideas have contributed to many of Southern Nevada’s successes.

“SEA TO SHINING SEA” PARTICIPANTS

(Carson City, Nevada) – Governor Jim Gibbons will welcome the Ride Across America led by World T.E.A.M. Sports to the Capitol in Carson City. A team of exceptional athletes, many of whom are wounded Iraq and Afghanistan veterans representing all military branches, departed from the Golden Gate Bridge on Saturday, May 22 for World T.E.A.M. Sports’ inaugural bike trek across America called Sea to Shining Sea. The goal of Sea to Shining Sea is to honor the courage of our service men and women, recognize the strength of the American spirit and challenge perceptions of how we view athletes.

SECRETARY CLINTON: Well, thank you very much for giving us this opportunity to come here to Brookings to talk about the National Security Strategy. I appreciate Strobe’s very kind words about this strategy, because certainly, an enormous amount of attention has been paid at the highest levels of the Obama Administration over the last 15 months. And it is our attempt to try to integrate many of the various aspects of national security. One of our goals coming into the Administration was to do exactly what Strobe said, to begin to make the case that defense, diplomacy, and development were not separate entities either in substance or process, but that indeed they had to be viewed as part of an integrated whole and that the whole of government then had to be enlisted in their pursuit.

So I am very pleased that I have this opportunity. There are so many old friends and important thinkers and talkers about American foreign policy who are here today along with members of the diplomatic community, and we’re very pleased to see all of you.

This is a comprehensive national security strategy that integrates our strengths here at home, our commitment to homeland security, our national defense, and our foreign policy. In a nutshell, this strategy is about strengthening and applying American leadership to advance our national interests and to solve shared problems. We do this against the backdrop of a changed and always changing global landscape and a difficult inheritance: two wars, a struggling economy, reduced credibility abroad, international institutions buckling under the weight of systemic changes, and so much more.

Our approach is to build the diverse sources of American power at home and to shape the global system so that it is more conducive to meeting our overriding objectives: security, prosperity, the explanation and spread of our values, and a just and sustainable international order.

Now, obviously, the world that we confront today has changed. This is a comprehensive National Security Strategy because we believe that we have to look at the world in a much more comprehensive way. The pace and nature of interconnection, economic interdependence, new technologies – all of those have in some ways brought the world, I would say, superficially closer together, but in other ways demonstrated the intensity of the demand on the United States to be able to respond and lead.

The type and number of actors with influence – emerging powers, non-state actors – we saw this in a very clear way in Copenhagen when President Obama and I worked to create a mechanism of some sort that would justify the gravity of the challenge was face and the extraordinary efforts that so many nations and non-state actors had put in to the lead-up to Copenhagen.

We see a world in which great power is exercised by primarily one nation, but there are many other existing and emerging powers. And yet it is not so much about the conflicts between powers, but the new and complicated threats that underscore and drive much of the interaction between powers in the world today: terrorism, proliferation, climate change, cybersecurity, energy security, and many other forces at work in our world.

But there are also huge opportunities, new modes of cooperation, new capacities to improve lives, some tangible efforts to bridge great gaps in understanding both through the media and through diplomacy. We are in a race between the forces of integration and the forces of disintegration, and we see that every day. And part of our challenge is to define American leadership in relevant terms to the world of today and tomorrow, and not merely looking in the rearview mirror, which makes it very hard to drive forward.

The Nevada State Democratic Convention is only a month away! The Convention Platform Committee will hold hearings next week. These hearings are open to registered Democrats who wish to submit resolutions for consideration in the development of the 2010 platform, which will be adopted at the Nevada State Democratic Convention on June 26th. When the platform committee has completed its work by June 20th, the draft platform will be available online at www.nvdems.com.

Hearings will be held:

Bill Maupin, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nevada until January 2007. He swore the Winner of Nevada Gubernatorial Election 2006 Jim Gibbons to Office on January 1, 2007.
