Congresswoman Shelley Berkley - Representing Nevada's 1st Congressional District

Dear Tony,

I am writing to update you on some legislation I supported this week that funds Military Construction and Veterans Affairs programs. Linked is a summary of the 2011 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations, which outlines programs and projects of critical importance to America's veterans and members of the military and their families. The funding includes veterans benefits and healthcare, and military family housing, barracks, and mission critical facilities.

Within the 2011 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Act, I worked to secure $8.8 million to construct a Nevada Army National Guard Civil Support Team Ready Building. The Nevada National Guard Civil Support Team is designed to provide immediate response in the case of a chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear attack.

I hope you find this update informative and as always, If you have any questions or concerns about this or any other matter, please do not hesitate to contact me or Ms. Jessi Hotchkiss in my Las Vegas office at the address and phone number above.

Sincerely,

Congresswoman Shelley Berkley

As a service to our students, GSEP makes available a list of our alumni who are local therapists who have agreed to offer reduced-fee therapy for Pepperdine students. Many students who benefit from reduced-fee therapy give back to the Pepperdine community after going into practice by asking us to add their name to the list. Additionally, the Board of Behavioral Sciences allows up to 100 psychotherapy hours to count towards licensure and give you three times the value, or a maximum of 300 hours. If you would like to be added to this list please contact our offices. Please e-mail Kathleen Wenger (MS '92) on the Irvine campus, Rebecca Reed (MA '91) in West Los Angeles, Alice Richardson (MA '05) in Encino, and Andrea Venkat ('90, MA '95) in Malibu.

Senator Harry Reid – Putting Nevada First

Dear Fellow Nevadan,

This year the Senate has been focused on jobs and the economy. And this week, the Senate took several steps forward to help Nevada’s long term unemployed and the state budget crisis.

Today, the Senate passed legislation that will protect the jobs of teachers in Nevada and provide funding for Medicaid recipients. The Education Jobs fund is projected to bring $83 million to Nevada schools to keep teachers working, and $79 million in Medicaid funds to ensure that our state's 160,000 Medicaid recipients have access to quality, affordable care. Although the FMAP money is directed to Medicaid, this funding will free up money the state otherwise would have had to spend, reducing the need for further budget cuts and layoffs in other areas. Any legislation that’s good for the country and saving jobs is good for Nevada. To hear my remarks after the passage of this important legislation, please click here.

Yesterday, I joined my colleague from Michigan, Senator Debbie Stabenow, in introducing the Americans Want to Work Act. This bill would help long-term unemployed Nevadans by providing 20 additional weeks of unemployment benefits, extending the HIRE Act payroll relief tax through next year, and doubling the per employee tax credit for businesses that retain long-term unemployed workers for at least one year. The measures in this bill will strengthen and extend programs that help unemployed Nevadans and provide incentives for businesses to hire them. Earlier this week, the Treasury Department announced that nearly 70,000 Nevadans have been hired this year because of the HIRE Act, which passed in March of this year. Click here for more information on the HIRE Act.

The Senate also passed S. 3307 today, the Healthy and Hunger-Free Kids Act. ... local governments don’t have to absorb the increased cost of school meals. In Nevada, nearly 100,000 children don’t know where they will get their next meal, and nearly 200,000 Nevada children depend on free or reduced lunch programs. At a time when many families are struggling to get by, this bill ensures children get something healthy to eat.

And today, the Senate confirmed Elena Kagan as the next Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. This is the first time that the U.S. Supreme Court will have three women justices serving at the same time. I was proud to cast my vote in favor of Elena Kagan today. Click here to read my remarks on the Senate floor.

The Senate will keep its focus on strengthening our economy, creating jobs, and supporting middle-class families throughout the rest of the year. I assure you, I will keep fighting until every worker in Nevada and across America who wants a job has one. As always, thank you for reading this update. Please visit my website, reid.senate.gov, for more information on my work in the Senate.

Sincerely,

HARRY REID
U.S. Senator for Nevada

Help NSDP Chairman Sam Lieberman Celebrate 30 Years in Nevada!

From: Sam Lieberman [osrsig@aol.com]Add to Contacts
To: Tony Lei [tojulei@yahoo.com]

Dear Friend,

Today marks a significant day in my personal history. Thirty years ago I first moved to Nevada. Since then, my personal, political, and community experiences have changed my life. I can only hope to have helped shape the progress of the state I proudly call my home.

In those thirty years, I have fought for higher education priorities at Board of Regents meetings in Elko, Ely, Reno, and Las Vegas. I have campaigned across the entire state for and with Senator Harry Reid, Congresswoman Shelley Berkley, Congresswoman Dina Titus, Rory Reid, our state constitutional officers, and our Democratic legislators and legislative candidates. I have worked side-by-side with many of you over the years on campaigns and activities, building up the Democratic Party in all 17 counties.

As we prepare for victory this November, help us build the foundation for what the Democratic Party in Nevada will accomplish now and in the next 30 years. In the past 30 years, you've probably heard me ask often for your "time, talent, and treasure" to elect our Democratic candidates and promote the values and ideals of the Democratic Party. And once more, I am asking. PLEASE CONTRIBUTE $30 today to fund our statewide get-out-the-vote efforts this fall. Your contribution will help fund the voter contact and education efforts that will lead to victories for our Democratic candidates this November.

CLICK HERE TO DONATE $30 TODAY

For 30 years, I have been proud to call Nevada home. Please help me celebrate this anniversary with your contribution of $30. Thank you for your continued support!

Sincerely,

(Autograph)
Sam Lieberman
Chair, Nevada State Democratic Party

NEVADA TO RECEIVE $83.1 MILLION FOR K-12 SCHOOLS!
By Office of the Govrnor(NV), Daniel Burns, Valerie , and Jennifer Kung

FOR THE CURRENT SCHOOL YEAR

Carson City - Governor Jim Gibbons received official notification today that Nevada will receive $83.1 million in one-time federal funding for the 2010-2011 school year. The funding is part of the gEdujobsh bill passed by Congress and signed into law on August 10, 2010. Application documents were received by the Governorfs Office on Friday, August 13, and Nevada applied for funding on Monday, August 16. Nevada was one of the first five states to apply for the funding.

gI will move quickly to distribute this money to our schools and our children. The school year is underway and the jobs created by these funds are needed now. Our students need this support now,h Governor Gibbons said, gWe appreciate the speedy approval process established U.S. Department of Education and we will expeditiously distribute this money to our school districts.h

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan commended Nevada for being one of the first states to apply for this special federal funding. The funding is expected to create 1,400 teaching and teaching support jobs statewide during the current school year.

Governor Gibbons has received assurances from the superintendents of both Clark County and Washoe County School Districts that the new federal funds will be used to create new teaching jobs and not to fund raises for existing teacher positions.

Governor Gibbons has communicated to school superintendents and school boards that his preference is to fund additional teaching positions to reduce class sizes, not only in primary grades but also in upper elementary grades, and in important subject areas such as high school mathematics.

Dr. Archie Chang wrote us several times recently. His knowledge, experience, and talent had ranked him in a very high position of the U. S. Department of Education. Passionately, he concerned himself the friendship and involvement with WBTI. He liked Las Vegas and had about three times nice trips here during last two years. "Dear Brother Tony: I have been thinking about you often. We have known each other since childhood. I would like to introduce one of my school mates of Taida to you. Dr. Sydney Chang, Prof. of History, Cal State Univ at Fresno, is a great scholar," wrote Dr. Archie Chang.*3

"Las Vegas - my favorite desert mirage." ---Val Saintsbury

John/Patty Cell Group has been blessed by God for good growth and evangelization. The group used to have sound scheduling to help promote church events. "There are a couple of events this weekend. This Friday 7/27 at 7:30pm, we are all welcomed to watch a movie together at church on the topic of dealing with depression. After the movie some of us may hang out at a snack place and chat," wrote John Lei.*7

LIVERight, a community service HBV free blood screen/seminar took place on Saturday, 1/13 from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm. This was a joint effort between Asian Liver Center (ALC) at Stanford University and Holiday Plaza Series at River of Life Christian Church (ROLCC). We are really thankful that this collaboration was a great success. ALC and ROLCC are embracing the same vision in serving the community via community awareness seminar/blood screen on one of the biggest killers, hepatitis B/liver cancer in Asian community. We had 238 people screened over the event; approximately 400 audiences came for the presentation. At large or little, we knew we had made the difference.

Dr. Samuel So did the presentation in English with Jordan Su's concurrent translation to Mandarin. Many people gave positive feedback, and everyone I spoke to felt that they have learned a lot of useful life-saving tips! In the presentation, Dr. So once again reminded us how serious hepatitis B is impacting the Asians and Asian Americans. He spoke about what each of us should do. If people are not carriers, they should definitely get the 3-slot immunization as soon as possible, which will protect them for life. If they are HBV carriers, they need to monitor their liver status on a regular basis.

To me, this joint event between ALC and ROLCC is just a starting. Based on the feedback we got from the attendants, we hope to see more ALC-ROLCC collaborative projects happened in times to come. We believe that this combined effort will provide the best service and a blessing to the community!

This event was beyond our expectation and turn out a great success. Of course, the most comforting thing to know is that some people's lives will be saved because of the knowledge they learn!

The above four paragraphs are reported by Dr. Ingrid Ou.*12

Dr. Ingrid Ying C. Ou is a senior scientist working for ALZA, Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical in Mountain View, CA. Ingrid got her doctoral degree from University of Washington , Seattle . Her passion in life is to serve the Lord and live up to HIS glory using her skills and interests in medicine. She also greatly enjoys serving the Lord in Single Adult and Children ministry (choir and musical program) at ROLCC. She believes that being Christian is not all about going to church. She believes that God~{!&~}s words can really equip us to a much better player in all areas of our life, at work and in the family. God's words are relevant to our daily lives; He helps us to achieve a higher level that we could not have done by our own means. In the spare time, Dr. Ingrid Ou enjoys ballet, running and playing piano. She and her husband currently reside in Sunnyvale, CA.

"In this era where massive amount of information is often found via internet, I think that the mission of WBTI is timely and visionary. The impact of Lord in the community will be enlarged via web publishing and more of Good news will be effectively going to those who need them the most," pointed out Dr. Ingrid Ou.

Dear Dr. Lei, Hope that you enjoyed the Dr. So's talk yesterday. As indicated in my email to you earlier this week, below is the script that I promoted last week at the English congregation: "In this coming Saturday, we will have the privilege of having Dr. So from Stanford, Asian Liver Center to come here to give us an education seminar on liver health. This is an event that you can't afford to miss. ... I will be here after the service to take your registration and answer any question that you may have. Thank you."

Here is an introduction of Dr. So: Dr. Samuel So is a professor and a liver cancer surgeon in the Department of Surgery and directs the Liver Cancer Program at Stanford University Medical Center. Dr. So is originally from Hong Kong. In 1996, Dr So established the Asian Liver Center to address the disproportionately high prevalence of hepatitis B and liver Cancer in the Asian and Asian Americans with the ultimate goal of eradicating hepatitis B worldwide and eliminating the threat of liver cancer.

The Asian Liver Center at Stanford is the only non-profit organization in the United States that addresses the high incidence of hepatitis B and liver cancer in Asians and Asian-Americans. Founded in 1996, the center uses a three-pronged approach towards fighting hepatitis B through outreach, education , and research.*4 More is available from http://liver.stanford.edu/ALC/ALC_staff.php

"Dear Dr. Lei, It was my great honor to meet you last Sunday. Thank you so much for your support for the event, which I believe is going to benefit a lot of us," wrote Dr. Ingrid Ou to Washington Business and Technology Institute on January 10, 2007.

"Dear Belinda: May God bless your wonderful work and serving heart. At the beginning of year 2007, I felt that God wants me to examine my past failures so that I know where I fall and what can I do to grow in Christ; just like the Israelites during the Deuteronomy time. Therefore by attending your class God reminded me that He is a God of covenant and promise. He is a faithful God that will never forsake me and will guide me through the wilderness just as He guides Israel. I look forward to more classes to learn of God's Words and Works so that I can live in God's promise land. Thank you so much and may God pour out His double blessings upon you. Rebecca," wrote Miss Rebecca Pang again for this article to WBTI on February 2, 2007.*14
