Outgoing Love

Romans 14

His face was covered with a full beard. His hair fell almost to his shoulders. When he smiled, his white teeth flashed in contrast to the blanket of brown that concealed his skin. His eyes were blue, clear, and alert. His laughter was strong and familiar to my ears. It reminded me of the times we sat together as friends in seminary, wrestling with reason and trying to unscrew the inscrutable.

He's now working at a restaurant, playing bluegrass in a four-piece combo. He also has an exciting ministry in a small church where he works with couples. As we had in the old days, we kicked around all sorts of subjects: his marriage, John Denver, the "Body concept" of the local church, banjos and fiddles . . . and the spiritual hunger on university campuses today. That's what we talked about, but we communicated more, much more.

Despite the separation of the years and the difference in our current lifestyles, we were inseparably linked as one in the bond of love. It seems so stupid to me that fellowship must be limited to the narrow ranks prescribed by a grim-and-narrow mind-set. Just because I prefer a certain style or attire doesn't mean that it's best . . . nor that it's for everyone . . . nor that the opposite taste is any less pleasing to God.

This gross intolerance of those who don't fit our mold reveals itself in a stoic stare or a caustic comment. Such legalistic and prejudiced reactions will thin the ranks of the local church faster than fire in the basement or flu in the pew.

If you question that, take a serious look at Paul's letter to the Galatians. His pen flowed with heated ink as he rebuked them for "deserting" Christ (1:6), "nullifying the grace of God" (2:21), becoming "bewitched" by legalism (3:1), and desiring "to be enslaved" by this crippling disease (4:9).

Sure there are limits to our freedom. Grace doesn't condone license. Love has its biblical restrictions. The opposite of legalism is not "do as you please." But listen! The limitations of liberty are far broader than most of us realize.

So, the next time you're in Dallas you might want to look up my friend Larry. He plays great mandolin in a top-notch bluegrass combo. He still loves Christ, but he never forces it on ...

GOVERNOR GIBBONS NAMES NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
FOR NEVADA VETERANS SERVICES

Carson City – Governor Jim Gibbons today appointed Caleb Cage as the Executive Director of the Nevada Office of Veterans Services. Cage presently serves as a Senior Policy Advisor/Rural and Veterans Issues for Nevada Lieutenant Governor Brian Krolicki.

Cage attained the rank of Captain in the United States Army, serving in Iraq as recently as 2006. Captain Cage was awarded the Army’s Bronze Star Medal for his service in Iraq. He is a 2002 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York.

“Caleb Cage is a dynamic leader with a terrific attitude,” Governor Gibbons said. “I am confident he will provide the veterans of Nevada with outstanding service and representation.”

“I am proud to serve the veterans of Nevada and I am equally proud that Governor Gibbons has shown his confidence in me,” Cage said.

The Nevada office of Veterans Services was established pursuant to NRS 417 to provide assistance and services to Nevada’s 339,000 veterans, their family members, and residents of Nevada serving in the Armed Forces of the United States. The Agency administers two State Veterans Memorial Cemeteries, the Nevada State Veterans Home, and a statewide Veterans Service Officer program. Cage is a resident of Reno and has served as a member of the Nevada Military Support Advisory Board and the Reno Parks and Recreation Commission.

Today early voting for my primary election campaign begins. As Arizonans cast their ballot for U.S. Senate, I am working tirelessly each and every day to gain support to win this primary campaign.

For the next 26 days, our campaign will continue our voter outreach efforts to the people of Arizona. These efforts are critical because I've been engaged in a tough primary campaign against an opponent who has been on the attack misrepresenting my record since day one.

Today, I'm turning to you for support in the final stretch of this primary campaign. The news out of Washington continues to anger and disappoint me and I'm sure you feel the same way. Last week the Obama Administration announced they would add an additional $1.49 tril lion to our national debt next year to pay for all of their spending programs. This means by next year our national debt will reach nearly $15 trillion! This is generational theft and it must be stopped.

But the out-of-control spending in Congress won't cease if I am replaced by my opponent. While in Congress, he supported thousands of earmarks worth billions of dollars before constituents in his district voted him out of office. And then after he was voted out of office, he served as a late night infomercial pitchman promising "free government money" in a scam. Promising people "free government money" is a betrayal of our shared conservative fiscal values.

As a public servant, I believe integrity and honor matter. I have spent my life in service to our country and I would be remiss if I did not do everything in my power to win this election for the men and women I am honored to serve each day.

I hope you will take this moment to support my campaign as we enter the home stretch of a deeply contested primary campaign. Your support will make the difference in these final days. Thank you.
