Gov. Brian Sandoval didn't waste any time making his first judicial appointment -- or history -- Thursday when he chose Jerry Tao to replace former Clark County District Judge David Wall, who resigned in August to take a position with Mainor Eglet.*11

Tao is the first Asian-American to be appointed to the bench in Nevada.

"I am incredibly impressed with Jerry," said Sandoval in making his announcement at the Grant Sawyer government building. Sandoval said as a former federal judge he understands what is required of good judges and is confident Tao possesses the necessary attributes of being prepared and respectful.

The son of immigrants, Tao, 42, prevailed over two other "highly qualified" candidates, said Sandoval, who personally interviewed Tao; Michael Davidson of the Kolesar & Latham law firm; and Troy Peyton. Sandoval said all three men were quality individuals and hinted Tao separated himself through his range of experience.

A supervisor at the Clark County Public Defender's office who in the past also worked for the district attorney, Sandoval noted Tao has participated in more than 100 trials either as a prosecutor or defense attorney, and practiced civil law in private practice before becoming a public attorney.

In Clark County's Eighth Judicial District, judges preside over criminal and civil matters ranging from death penalty cases to complex construction defect litigation.

Tao said he was humbled by the appointment.

"I will be fair, impartial, and thorough and strive to do justice," he said.

Tao's parents, Louis and Kay Tao, were in attendance. Both of them said they were proud of their son's appointment.

Tao earned his Bachelor of Science at Cornell and his Juris Doctorate from George Washington School of Law, where in 1992, as a member of the school's Law Review; he was awarded the Marcus B. Finnegan Memorial Award, given to one student who wrote the best scholarly article of the year.

While Tao was Sandoval's first judicial appointment, history suggests more will follow. The late Kenny Guinn made 21 judicial appointments. Former Gov. Jim Gibbons in four years made seven appointments, including one Family Court judge, Robert Teuton, who was appointed twice because of a glitch in the process.

The process is intense. Nineteen candidates applied for the vacancy and had to provide extensive information to the Nevada Commission on Judicial Selection -- Tao's application was 50 pages long -- as well as submit to a comprehensive background check.

The commission, composed of the Nevada Supreme Court's chief justice, attorneys, and laypersons from throughout the state, whittled the field to three candidates for Sandoval to consider. The governor then interviewed the finalists before making his decision.

There are now 52 judges in Clark County. District judges earn $160,000 annually. Clark County's court system is one of the busiest in the nation; each judge handles roughly 2,225 cases per year. Tao will have to campaign for election to a full term in 2012.*17

Asian American communitiy had been united together to hold an event and dinner party successfully to honor U. S. Senator Harry Reid. More than 384 against the 250 planned individuals of government officials, business owners and executives, organizational leaders among others attended the party at the Asia Palace Chinese Restaurant on August 24, 2001.*1

According to the prepared introduction by Congresswoman Berkley to the Party, "Dr. Tony Lei is the President of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) and Chairman of Chinese American Academic Association of Nevada. He received his M.B.A. and Doctor of Education in Institutional Management degrees from Pepperdine University in 1969 and 1980, respectively. He had been an Associate Professor and a Fellow of Management of the Graduate School of Business Administration of National Chung Hsing University and Pepperdine University from 1985 to 1991 and 1991 to 1996, respectively. He has completed numerou scientific papers, text books, best selling books, and research projects during past 30 years in universities and academic institutes. His famous publications Modern Business Management, Information Management, Human Behavior Science, The Arts of Leading, among others have been adopted by several universities as text books."

The highlight of the event was the presentation of a plague of Award of accomplishment to Senator Harry Reid by the Chairmen of the event and dinner party. Fowllowing to sing a happy birthday song for Governor Kenny Guinn and Judge Jessie Walsh, Dr. Lei introduced a former State Senator Mark Malone presenting an Award to Senator Harry Reid from the State Board of Educaton of its elected Member Theresa Malone.

Dr. John Wang, Spokesman of WBTI, announced the above information on April 24, 2003.*8 Judge Bert Brown was honored at the Summer 2003 Symposium of WBTI with a celebrating dinner party. The symposium and dinner were held by WBTI at Zax Restaurant of Golden Nugget Casino and Hotel on May 19, 2003 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Bert graduated from the McGeorge School of Law, University of the Pacific in Sacramento, California. He was at the beginning a law clerk in 1988 for District Court Judge, Honorable Jack Lehman. Nevada Lt. Governor Brian Krolicki has Olympian vision for state tourism! Innovation is advanced by the "creating" through the "refining".

"Nevada's lieutenant governor-elect has international goals for the state's No. 1 industry, including pursuing the 2018 Olympic Winter Games and attracting travelers from China and India. Facing one of the largest audiences of Nevada tourism professionals, Treasurer Brian Krolicki, said Tuesday at the governor's conference on tourism, that putting Nevada in the running for the winter games will spur economic growth in the future. It has worked in the past," wrote Becky Bosshart.*13

"The 1960 Olympics helped to put Reno and Tahoe on the map," he said to conference participants at the Silver Legacy Casino Resort. "We want this world-class event to come here again. Some people say it's a long shot. But in tourism, we do long shots. Our efforts next year and thereafter will be seeds sown for a future harvest." *14 "Taking the second highest office in state government, Krolicki will also chair the Nevada Commission on Tourism and the Nevada Commission on Economic Development, organizations that attract and retain businesses and market the state's lucrative tourism industry. He follows Lt. Gov. Lorraine Hunt into the positions. Hunt said she is passing on a strong tourism economy that derives $40 billion a year. Tourism officials recently visited India to develop tourism ties. India's middle class is about the size of the U.S. population, 300 million."

Lt. Governor of Nevada Brian Krolicki is Chairman of both the Nevada Commission on Tourism (NCOT) and the Nevada Commission on Economic Development (NCED) since early this year. The experienced and achieved former Nevada Lt. Governor Lorraine T. Hunt-Bono is favored by both Governor Jim Gibbons and Lt. Governor Krolicki as an important Commissioner of the NCOT.
