Kennedy says 9/11, Obama led her to public service

NEW YORK V Caroline Kennedy emerged from weeks of near-silence Friday about her bid for a Senate seat by saying that after a lifetime of closely guarded privacy, she felt compelled to answer the call to service issued by her father a generation ago.*12

She said two events shaped her decision to ask Gov. David Paterson 11 days ago to consider her for the position if Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton is confirmed as secretary of state: the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and her work for Barack Obama's presidential campaign.

In her first sit-down interview since she emerged as a Senate hopeful, the 51-year-old daughter of President John F. Kennedy cited her father's legacy in explaining her decision to seek to serve alongside her uncle Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy.

"Many people remember that spirit that President Kennedy summoned forth," she said. "Many people look to me as somebody who embodies that sense of possibility. I'm not saying that I am anything like him, I'm just saying there's a spirit that I think I've grown up with that is something that means a tremendous amount to me."

She also credited her mother, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, with giving her the courage to seek the job.

"I think my mother ... made it clear that you have to live life by your own terms and you have to not worry about what other people think and you have to have the courage to do the unexpected," she said.

Since Kennedy expressed interest in the job, she has faced sometimes sharp criticism that she cut in line ahead of politicians with more experience and has acted as if she were entitled to it because of her political lineage. More than a half-dozen elected officials are vying for the seat, including New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo and several members of Congress.

Kennedy said that she had long been encouraged to seek public office and that Clinton's expected departure from the Senate offered the perfect opportunity to follow in the footsteps of her father, two uncles and cousins.

"Going into politics is something people have asked me about forever," a relaxed Kennedy said as she ate a grilled cheese and bacon sandwich and sipped coffee at a diner in Manhattan. "When this opportunity came along, which was sort of unexpected, I thought, `Well, maybe now. How about now?'"

She said she realizes she will have to prove herself and "work twice as hard as anybody else." She acknowledged, "I am an unconventional choice," but added: "We're starting to see there are many ways into public life and public service."

Since Kennedy's name first surfaced as a possible replacement for Clinton, her advisers have shielded her from the media, with the exception of a few brief interviews on a swing through upstate New York and a visit to Harlem with the Rev. Al Sharpton.

Some commentators likened her to Sarah Palin in the way her dealings with the media were being carefully managed.

She agreed to sit down for interviews Friday with The Associated Press and NY1 television.

Kennedy acknowledged that her recent time in the limelight X after a relatively private life as a wife, mother of three, best-selling author and fundraiser in New York City X had not gone entirely smoothly.

But she said she had turned down interview requests and tried not to appear to be campaigning for the job because she knew that the choice rested solely with the Democratic governor.

"I was trying to respect the process. It is not a campaign," she said. "It was misinterpreted. If I were to be selected, I understand public servants have to be accessible."

Asked about criticism from other politicians and members of the public that she seems to regard herself as entitled to the job as a member of America's most storied political dynasty, she said: "Everybody that knows me knows I haven't really lived that way. ... Nobody's entitled to anything, certainly not me."

Kennedy chuckled when she was asked if her brother, the late John F. Kennedy Jr., had ever suggested she run for public office some day. "He usually thought about himself," she said. "He would be laughing his head off at seeing what's going on right now."

Kennedy has been criticized for failing vote in a number of elections since registering in New York City in 1988, including in 1994 when Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan was up for re-election for the seat she hopes to take over.

When asked to explain Friday, Kennedy reacted with good humor. "I was really surprised and dismayed by my voting record," she said. "I'm glad it's been brought to my attention."

Former New York Rep. Geraldine Ferraro is among those who have urged Paterson to appoint an experienced member of Congress for the job.

"I think it's great she understands she will have a tougher time," Ferraro said. "I don't know if she can work twice as hard because having been a member of Congress I know they work 24-7. They already work hard." *14

It was held for the celebrating of the incorperation of TEFA USA and the Global Tunghai Reunion in Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S.A.

In the conference, Dr. Tony T. Lei expressed sincerely and heartily the welcome in his short speech to both the Corperation and Reunion. He then introduced Theresa Malone, Member of the Nevada Board of Education, and Denise Brodsky, Las Vegas School Board of Trustees to deliver their welcome speeches.

Malone spoke for U. S. Senator Harry Reid's welcome to the Conference and announced Reid's certificates of commendation to TEFA and CAAAN. "Yet, with our differences we have a goal that is the same: to provide many opportunities for our citizens to learn and develop their knowledge, skill, mind, and character by formal schoolling," Malone said. "With support of organizations as the Tunghai Endowment Fund for Academic Advancement, and the Washington Business and Technology Institute, but most importantly You, we will fulfill our goal to promote opportunities for education. On behalf of the Nevada education community, thanks you for sharing your time and goals with us," she added.*3

Brodsky announced in her welcome speech that U.S. Congresswoman Berkley was giving TEFA and CAAAN each a certificate of commendation. She recognized that Mayor, WBTI, and among others are sharing their same legacy to include building Las Vegas a community where future generations will have even more opportunities and advantages to live a prosperous life.

The highlight of the symposium with tea party at Bellagio was the Congressional Recognition by U.S. Congresswoman Honorable Shelley Berkley presented through Malone and Brodsky to TEFA and CAAAN. On behalf of the TEFA, Chairman Dr. Ching-Mai Wu and President Dr. Kang-pei Wang of Tunghai University received the Certificate. Dr. Tony T. Lei also received the Award for CAAAN from Berkley. Thunders of applause from all the guests and participants brought a climax of this event in the Conference Room of Renoir 2 during the presentation of the awards. Chairman Dr. Ching-Mai Wu gave a thanks speech to appreciate Senator Reid, Congresswoman Berkley, and Chairman Lei for their hospitable welcome and supports. He was acknowledged the invitation by Reid to meet the Senator through Dr. Lei. President Dr. Tony T. Lei of WBTI, Chairman of CAN-DO Dr. R. D. Prabhu, among others were going to hold a significant theme party and dinner in August for Reid in congratulating his being the Majoity Whip of the U. S. Senate.

Dr. Kang-pei Wang, President of Tunghai University, was also invited to give a speech. He thanked the nice welcome and supports by the Washington, D.C. Scene, Nevada State, Las Vegas City, Clark County, and WBTI with CAAAN.

Acknowledgement from President Kang-pei Wang to the goverments and people of Nevada was: The enthusiastic welcome and implementation of the dinner party and conference by WBTI and CAAAN has been exemplified as one of the inspired revelations for Nevada's mission and enpowering on education and tourism. The advisory and faculty members' united ingenuity and effort to mentor and help Dr. Tony T. Lei's long years of honest and excellent endeavor to coummunity service in Nevada have been significant and fruitful. He said that Tunghai University is a developed university with many achieved departments, graduate schools, and colleges. The diligent and significant attitude and work performance of teaching methodology by professors and the concrete research accomplishments of the graduate schools have launched this University to one of the achieved educatonal institutions in the world. He also welcomed all Nevadans come to visit the beautiful Taiwan and the famous Tunghai University.

U. S. Senior Senator of Nevada Harry Reid, the second greatest and powerful character (now Majority Leader) of the Senate in Washington D. C., gave a Certificate of Commendation of the U. S. Senate to Chinese American Academic Association of Nevada (CAAAN). It gave credit to CAAAN for "In Recognition of Your Outstanding Support and Contribution to the TEFA and Global Tunghai Reunion in Las Vegas, Nevada." Dr. Tony T. Lei, Chairman of CAAAN and his wife Judy received the award in the Senator Reid's Office on July 16, 2001. TEFA also received a certificate because of "In Recognition of Your Outstanding Accomplishment to the Academic Advancement and International Cooperation in Education" from the U.S. Senator Honorable Harry Reid through CAAAN.

The Office of Senator Reid in Washington D. C. faxed Dr. Tony T. Lei, President of Washington Business and Technology Institute(WBTI) its "WHIP ROUND-UP". It told Tony that famous for Harry's ability to lead important negotiations while avoiding the media spotlight, Majority Whip Reid's day of keeping a low profile in Nevada may be over. "The Washington Post" and "Time Magazine" touted Senator Reid's influence last week. The latter quoted GOP Senator John Ensign as saying: "If Republicans want something, they go to Harry. He represents things fairly. He won't over-promise and underdeliver." Harry's wisdom is to fight for the Nation and to love and protect Nevada!

Senator Reid graduated from Utah State University in 1961. He received his Juris Doctoral Degree from George Washington University. In 1968, he was elected to Nevada State Assembly at the age of 28. After two years, he was elected as Nevada's youngest legislator in the state's history. In 1977, he was appointed as the Chairman of the Nevada Gaming Commission. In 1983, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. After having served two terms in the House, he was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1980. On April 10, 1998, he was honored as Advisor and Vice Chairman of the Advisory Board of Washington Business and Technology Institute. In December of 1998, after returning for his third term in the U.S. Senate, he was unaimously elected by his Democratic colleagues to serve as the Assistant Minority Leader. He was the Assistant Democratic Leader and Majority Whip of the U.S. Senate in Washington D. C. (now the Majority Leader of U. S. Senate).*4

Senator Reid comes from Searchlight, Nevada, where in that rural mining town he learned the fundamental values of hard work and honesty that endure as his guiding principles. The Nevada's Senior Senator was raised in a small cabin without indoor pluming and attended a two-room elementary school. His father was a hardrock miner with an 8th grade education, and his mother never finished high school, but the youngest of Harry and Inez Reid's four sons would go on to achieve the American dream.

"Senator Reid loves heartily this country and our people. His leadership is accentuated with practical knowledge and deligent effort through his intelligence. He has achieved many years accomplishment to improve the quality of life of all Nevadans and help people realize the American Dream," said Dr. Tony T. Lei in my feature article entitled "Senator Harry Reid has been awarded 'Outstanding Democrat of the Decade' " on October 26, 2000.*5

"On behalf of Washington Business and Technology Institute, I'm glad to be one of the Chairmen of this Event and Dinner Party for a Special Tribute to U. S. Senator Harry Reid. Happy holidays! on Tuesday, December 23, 2008 at 9:46 AM From: "Michelle Obama" {info@barackobama.com}

mike --

This holiday season, the grassroots movement you helped build can make a big difference for those in need.

I hope you will join me in supporting your favorite charity or contributing to causes that are especially meaningful to me and my family.

While many of us will spend the holidays counting our blessings and sharing dinner with loved ones, millions of people around the country won't be so fortunate. Donating to your local food bank will help provide a holiday meal to people in your community who can't afford one.

Talking with the families of deployed troops was one of the most rewarding experiences I had during the campaign. Giving to Operation USO Care Package is a great way to send members of our military stationed around the world a reminder that someone back home is thinking of them.

This is a time to celebrate our blessings, the new year, and a new era for our country. But it's also a time to come together on behalf of those who need our help.

Do what you can to help today by locating your local food bank and giving your support:

Or send a care package to an American in uniform:

Thank you for all that you do and have a very happy holiday season,

Michelle

Merry Christmas from ICLV!
Wednesday, December 24, 2008 at 4:15 PM ^^^From: "International Church of Las Vegas" {info@iclv.com}

Wednesday, December 24, 2008

Dear ICLV Family,

I would like to thank everyone who was involved in our Christmas production, Make it Big. Congratulations to the whole cast and crew! Their efforts and the efforts of those bringing guests led the way for over 500 salvations! Another congratulations is in order for our South Campus as they performed their very first Christmas production. I am so proud of the team. They had over 100 salvations!

I would also like to thank each of you who brought gifts to bless children and families this Christmas. What a blessing it is to serve with such a generous church.

We have some exciting services over the next few days:

Don't miss out on tonight's Christmas Eve Communion service from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm. We will have childcare available for children up to 5 years old.

This Sunday, December 28, Pastor Sergio Scataglini will be preaching all three services at ICLV Westcliff. Expect them to be power-packed!

Next Wednesday, New Year's Eve, we will have a Worship and Prophetic night from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Let's spend time in the Lord's presence as we usher in 2009!

As we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior tonight and tomorrow, let us all reflect on the goodness of our God and the many blessings he has been faithful to provide in 2008. Our prayers and goodwill are extended to you and all your loved ones during this joyous season and throughout 2009.

As our theme for the next year is Harvest Time in 2009, I believe that all of the seed planted in 2008 and the months to come will produce an incredible harvest, both personally and corporately. Keep in mind that it is not too late to give a final gift before the end of the year. Denise and I love you and want to thank you for your giving and support!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

The Goulet, Parker and Ana Families

Dear Mike,

I couldn't let this holiday season pass by without taking the time to thank you for all the wonderful support you've given me. I've received so many kind messages in the last few weeks, and I can't tell you how much your friendship means to me.

As I celebrate the holidays with my family, I'll be thinking about all our wonderful memories from the past year. I hope you'll take the time to remember all the things we accomplished together and all the lives we touched.
