Today, I am proud to write you with the news that this legislation has cleared an important hurdle. It has been passed by the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee and is now one step closer to becoming law.*1 The Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Act would create a national strategy for conducting research into the possible links between breast cancer and the environment. It establishes a peer-reviewed grant program within the National Institutes of Health to fund multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional research that includes collaboration with community organizations, to study environmental factors that may cause breast cancer. The bill authorizes $40 million per year over five years for this research program, and we believer this research may lead to a better understanding of breast cancer that could improve efforts to prevent, treat and cure it. Washoe County is facing a $20.6 million budget cut as a result of an economic slump that has been largely driven by the mortgage meltdown. In Clark County, for the first time, the number of homes in foreclosure outnumbered the number of homes being sold.*1 I have been working hard to end the foreclosure crisis and I am taking steps to prevent it from happening again. Following the spirit of entrepreneurship, Jackie Glass has always been willing to take a challenge head on. Now she is on her challenge! When she decided to attend the University of Georgia, she continued as a waitress and worked her way through college. She took on extracurricular assignments, and earned a degree in journalism.
