Some valuable skills for individuals to have a more successful and happy life By Tiffany Chang[[[***** From now on, any definition of a successful life must include serving others. ---George Bush]]] [[[***** When people are serving, life is no longer meaningless. ---John Gardner]]] ------------------------------------------- It is a general understanding that: If we are able to excel in a particular field of professional career, we will definitely have a better chance of gaining a foothold into society. Outstanding professional accomplishments enhanced with good community service is a practical and sincere way for us to integrate into American society and win the recognition by our mainsteam society and American people.*1 In this generation and society, we need economic compassion, in service above self, and in action of love and moral courage. Some people are of the "tell me what you wear, tell me what kind of car you drive, tell me what cards you carry, and I'll tell you who you are" culture. What do the people we admire have in common? These individuals have faith, respect and love, unabashed love. Love always transcends self. In its purest form, love is unconditional and an appreciation. The Greeks had a saying: People are known by the heroes they crown." Tell me whom you admire, and I will tell you who you are. Your choice of heroes reveals your personal traits. "By the act of love itself, we are enriched. Love in action is service above self. Make service part of our characters and experience the abundanr rewards that come from serving others. Let our heroes be the great servants who have given all for the bettement of other's lives, Let our candle fuel a fire that will fan out an ever-increasing circles. With these circles together we can close our eyes and evision a community that is safe, peaceful, and healthy. This is why I used to pointed out that, knowledge calls, ultimately, a life of service," says Dr. Tony Lei, President of Washington Business and Technology Institute.*2 We can work alongside each other. We can absorb each other's energy and discipline and commitment to inspire us and motivate us. Service beyond self is love in action. This is our creed and our calling. We stumble and splinter when we forget that goal. We unite and prosper when we remember it. There are three major drives pushing and pulling us into the 21st century. (1) The neccessity and speed of change: Change is unavoidable for improement and innovation. Most of the change we face are permanent, pervasive, and profound. It is permanent, because few of us would want to uninvent microchip, to use a train instead of an airline as a business transportation from Los Angeles to New York, or abandon the medical advances that have extended and enhanced our lives. It is pervasive because the information highway has change our lives. Few parts of the way we live and work have escaped the effects of change. It is profound because we must reassess the sharing of our planet's resources. As individuals, we must reassess our values, ideals, and prejudices. As associations we must have effective actions to decrase the force of resistance-to-change successfully. (2) Emphases of partnerships and alliances. Highly successful organizations have become circliar instead of flat. Each function is a link in a chain whose strength depends on the whole. Each is an alliance or partner with all the others. We need strong, supportive alliances because we need quick access to resources whether they are human, informational, financial, or material by nature. (3) Member service to member focus: One of the important purposes of an association is all about having satisfied, happy, loyal, referral-bearing members. Our members' success is our success. We should put attention to the thre areas of members focus. The first one is member servicing, which is the operations part that we should do the task well. The second one is member relations, which is the human part that we may be better to have the one-on-one actions. The third one is member development which is the coordinating and retention part that brings satisfaction to every activity. There are two principles at the heart of the positive thinking road map. (A) the first principle is truth in thinking uncover and eliminate self-limiting belief and attitudes. We need to establish "truth in thinking" by focusing on the facts and avoiding negative self-talk. Challenge our unrealistic belief by reorienting them in a more realistic, positive manner. We will think, feel, and act more confidently, thereby increasing the likehood for success. (B) The second principle is the 12 positive thinking traits. "The following are 12 traits that characterize a positive thinker: (1) Optimism (2) Enthusiam (3) Belief (4) Intelligence (5) Courage (6) Integrity (7) Confidence (8) Judgement (9) Persistence (10) Liveliness (11) Vision (12) Desire to excel. Each traits, when leveraged properly, produces powerful results to achieve our goals. These traits, when diligently and wisely applied together with the truth in thinking, allow us to overcome obstacles and challenges in a positive manner in our lives for accomplishment," Dr. Tony Lei points out. "Develop a clear vision of our prefered future, then get focused on key activities and efforts that take us in that direction. We shall see performance gains, achieve our goal and have a happier, more successful life. By pursuing our own personal strategic plans with love and service, we will increase our energies, motivations, satisfactions, happiness, and the worthy value of our lives," he continues.*3 "Because of his sincere and effective work performance in community service beside his academic endeavor, Dr. Tony Lei has received many important awards for his outstanding asccomplishments from U. S. Senators, U. S. Representatives, Las Vegas Mayor, Clark County Chairman, among others. It is significant that Dr. Kenny Guinn wrote Dr. Tony Lei: 'It is only with the dedication and commitment of good people like yourself that I will achieve my goal of becoming Governor of this great state. Dema and I can't thak you enough for your assistant and your positive activeties in the community,'" Lillian and Julian Wallace wrote a feature article entitled "We Prodly Present to You Two of the Dearest People in the World -- Dr. and Mrs. Tony T. Lei" At the time, Lillian was President of Senior United, while Julian is its CEO. The article was published by the famous "Hights Magazine" on October, 1999.*4 --------------------------------------------- References *1. Google. Dr. Samuel So's successful speech on hepatitis B/liver cancer By Ingrid Ou and Jennifer Kung***** Disciples with expertise, integrity, and humane spirit from the marketplace will certainly enhance the implementation of our mission to 'Arise & Shine - Ignite Our City' for 2007. ---John K. Lei, Chairman of the Board of Directors of ROLCC ----------------------------------------- LIVERight, a community service HBV free blood screen/seminar took place on Saturday, 1/13 from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm. This was a joint effort between Asian Liver Center (ALC) at Stanford University and Holiday Plaza Series at River of Life Christian church (ROLCC). We are really thankful that this collaboration was a great success. ALC and ROLCC are embracing the same vision in serving the community via community awareness seminar/blood screen on one of the biggest killers, hepatitis B/liver cancer in Asian community. We had 238 people screened over the event; approximately 400 audiences came for the presentation. At large or little, we knew we had made the difference. About 20 volunteers from ALC and 15 volunteers from ROLCC came to help out the event. Dr. So did the presentation in English with Jordan Su's concurrent translation to Mandarin. Many people gave positive feedback, and everyone I spoke to felt that they have learned a lot of useful life-saving tips! The event started by having the audience to watch the film. I was really touched after watching the film that told many stories on how hepatitis B had impacted the lives of many. I remember vividly Dr. Sos interview in the movie: I am just very sick of seeing so many young lives lost every day due to HBV/liver cancer. This was why liver transplant surgen, Dr. So decided to found ALC to serve the community. In the presentation, Dr. So once again reminded us how serious hepatitis B is impacting the Asians and Asian Americans. In certain part of China , the impact was much worse-1/6 of population is infected by HBV. He spoke about the trasmission route for hepatitis B. He spoke about what each of us should do. If people are not carriers, they should definitely get the 3-slot immunization as soon as possible, which will protect them for life. If they are HBV carriers, they need to monitor their liver status on a regular basis. They should go to their doctor to have their liver function and ALPHAFETO PROTEIN level checked every half year plus annual ultrasound exam. In addition, he told the story about a medical intern who had hepatitis B but lack of awareness, died of liver cancer at very young age. This sad story continues to linger on peoples mind and serves as a good reminder of being educated on this important topic. He ended by stating the mission and work at ALC. Many people that came to the event raised a lot of questions. During Q/A session, Dr. So further spoke about the difference between hepatitis A, B and C. He explained about the outcome of missing one last slot during the 3 shot immunization course and the impact of it if the schedule of 3-shots immunization is different from it is recommended. In addition, he commented about the use of herbal supplements and why some people can't donate blood even though they are not carriers. The event actually ran into 4.45 pm, and many people's questions still could not be answered due to time constrains. To me, this joint event between ALC and ROLCC is just a starting. Based on the feedback we got from the attendants, we hope to see more ALC-ROLCC collaborative projects happened in times to come. We believe that this combined effort will provide the best service and a blessing to the community! This event was beyond our expectation and turn out a great success. Of course, the most comforting thing to know is that some people's lives will be saved because of the knowledge they learn! We pray that Lord will continue to bless the vision of ALC and ROLCC and to those people who attended the event. The above five paragraphs are reported by Dr. Ingrid Ou.*1 Dr. Ingrid Ying C. Ou is a senior scientist working for ALZA, Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical in Mountain View, CA. Ingrid got her doctoral degree from University of Washington , Seattle . Her passion in life is to serve the Lord and live up to HIS glory using her skills and interests in medicine. She also greatly enjoys serving the Lord in Single Adult and Children ministry (choir and musical program) at ROLCC. She believes that being Christian is not all about going to church. She believes that Gods words can really equip us to a much better player in all areas of our life, at work and in the family. God's words are relevant to our daily lives; He helps us to achieve a higher level that we could not have done by our own means. In the spare time, Dr. Ingrid Ou enjoys ballet, running and playing piano. She and her husband currently reside in Sunnyvale, CA. "In this era where massive amount of information is often found via internet, I think that the mission of WBTI is timely and visionary. The impact of Lord in the community will be enlarged via web publishing and more of Good news will be effectively going to those who need them the most," pointed out Dr. Ingrid Ou.*2 Dear Dr. Lei, Hope that you enjoyed the Dr. So's talk yesterday. As indicated in my email to you earlier this week, below is the script that I promoted last week at the English congregation: "Happy New Year, Brothers and Sisters. This is coming Saturday, we will have the privilege of having Dr. So from Stanford, Asian Liver Center to come here to give us an education seminar on liver health. This is an event that you can't afford to miss. Why do I say this? Let me start by showing you a patient interview video clip by Anthony. (http://liver.Stanford.edu/Mult/Mult_video.php). Yes, Anthony is right. People who have hepatitis B have a much higher chance of getting liver cancer. This is especially a problem among Asians and Asian Americans. It is estimated that one in 10 Asians are HBV carriers and one in 4 chronic HBV carriers will eventually die of liver cancer or liver disease if left untreated, or unmonitored. Unfortunately, many of us did not know about this fact. What is even more sad is that many of the HBV carriers did not know that there are several simple monitoring tests they can ask from their doctors. Instead, they left the disease unmonitored until it was too late. This coming Saturday, we expect to have 300-400 people to join us. I am very excited. According to the statistics, as many as 10 people's lives will be saved because of the knowledge we learn. I hope all of you will join us for this meaningful, life-saving event. I will be here after the service to take your registration and answer any question that you may have. Thank you again for your attention." *3 Here is an introduction of Dr. So. Dr. Samuel So is a professor and a liver cancer surgeon in the Department of Surgery and directs the Liver Cancer Program at Stanford University Medical Center. Dr. So is originally from Hong Kong. In 1996, Dr So established the Asian Liver Center to address the disproportionately high prevalence of hepatitis B and liver Cancer in the Asian and Asian Americans with the ultimate goal of eradicating hepatitis B worldwide and eliminating the threat of liver cancer. The Asian Liver Center at Stanford is the only non-profit organization in the United States that addresses the high incidence of hepatitis B and liver cancer in Asians and Asian-Americans. Founded in 1996, the center uses a three-pronged approach towards fighting hepatitis B through outreach, education , and research.*4 More is available from http://liver.stanford.edu/ALC/ALC_staff.php "Dear Dr. Lei, It was my great honor to meet you last Sunday. Thank you so much for your support for the event, which I believe is going to benefit a lot of us," wrote Dr. Ingrid Ou to Washington Business and Technology Institute on January 10, 2007. 2007!" wrote Mrs. Belinda M. Liu on November 26, 2006.*5 The evening was shinning! How nice was Friday December 29, 2006! We had a wonderful potluck at Mr. John Lei's home for our John Lei/Petty Wu Cell Group. We had lots of nice foods, fruits, and cakes. Attendants were enthusiastic. They included Miss Nicole Ying, Ms. Linda Miao, Miss Teresa Zhang, Miss Angel Ku, Miss Sarah Shao, Miss Linda Tu, Miss Angie Qian, Mr. Kang Fung, Mr. Gino Ko, Mr. John Lei, Mr. Mike Lei, Mrs. Judy Lei, and Dr. Tony Lei (names in random). The potluck was fully enjoyed by all the participants with good communication and fun. The game brought us with another hightlight of the reunion. Praise God that we had a such wonderful time after the Christmas and before the New Year. A happy New Year was wishful among all the sisters and brothers! "Thank you for devotions this morning on the balcony overlooking the misty snowy sun-rise landscape," wrote Mr. Mike Lei on December 24, 2006.*6 "Dear Dr. Lei, You're an extremely knowledgeable and wise elder, yet very easy to get along with. I'm very blessed to getting to know you more in the past 7 months. Your warm hospitality makes me feel just like a family member of yours. Wishing you a joyful and peaceful Christmas. May God continued blessing what you're fonding of doing. May your resourseful website become one of the "Top" (: channel of communication for business, social, and community. May you continue receiving His wisdom words and His double portion of favors," wrote Miss Angie Qian on a nice Season's Greetings card to Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) on December 24 in Lake Tahoe, California. Sunday was joyful day at ROLCC with the children performing an outstanding drama in all three services and afterwards the baptism ceremony for 34 brothers and sisters. Nicole Ying of John Lei/Patty Wu cell group was among those who were baptized on Sunday. The cell group members attended the ceremony with excitement and shouted, "Nicole, Jesus loves you and we also love you!" when she went on stage to give her testimony. John/Patty's cell group memembers gave Nicole flowers and many gifts to celebrate Nicole's "new birth", praise the Lord! Many nice photos were taken.*7 "Dear friends, During last Friday's fellowship, I told you about the free online Bible website. "Thank you," wrote Nevada Supreme Court Justice Michael Douglas to WBTI.*9 "One of the most important contribution of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) to our high-ranking officials and community is its many articles published frequently by the search engine leaders locally, nationally, and internationally. As an Associate Professor of the Graduate School of Business and Public Administration of WBTI, it's my hornor to join its Professor of Administrative Strategies U. S. Senator Harry Reid ( now the Majority Leader of U. S. Senate) and its Chairperson Elaine Chao, U. S. Secretary of Labor, to endeavor the promotion of benifits for our people, community, and country." The Sunday School on "Book of Numbers" that implemented by Mrs. Belinda M. Liu through November 19, 2006 was impressive. We had many sisters and brothers including Miss Ying-Min Huang, Mr. Yang Shao, Mrs. Judy Lei, Miss Vanessa Li, Mr. John Lei, Miss Angel Lo, Miss Annie Shen, Mr. Jingmin Leng, Miss Lanfang Hsu, Miss Julie Tai, Miss Rebecca Pang, Mrs. Gary Hsu, Miss Elaine Hsu, 李淑玲, Miss Chiao-wen Chen, Dr. Tony Lei, and among others (names in random). Miss Chiao-wen Chen told Tiffany Chang that she was inspired by Mrs. Belinda M. Liu's good teaching. Belinda will teach another Sunday School starting from January 2007. "Thanks, Dr. Lei," wrote Nevada Assemblywoman Valerie Weber to WBTI.*10 "The WBTI's website has played an important role to bridge the cooperation and development among our individuals, officials, and community. In advancing to its 14th year, we'd find WBTI's inter-states perspectives have brought with potentiality for the prosperity of more organiztions and people." By the act of love itself, we are enriched. Love in action is service above self. Make service a part of our character and experience the abundant reward that comes from serving others. "It's my appreciation to 'Nevada Examiner' for its publication of my following statement several times," said District Court Judge Cheryl Moss. In community service, Dr. Tony T. Lei's hero is the great servant who has given all for the betterment of others' lives. Let our candles fuel a fire that will fan out an ever-lasting circles. With these circles together we can close our eyes and envision a community that is safe, peaceful, and healthy. The Bible teaches us: "...let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth (1 John 3:18)." District (Family) Court Judge-elect Cheryl Moss wrote Dr. Tony T. Lei, "I am delighted and honored to be appointed as an Associate Fellow of the Public Administration Institution of Washington Business and Technology Institute. Thank you for this opportunity to serve, and I hope to gain more knowledge, insight and awareness about public service and community issues through your prestigious institution. I remain dedicated to helping the community, and I am inspired by your leadership, wisdom and guidance. I am also fortunate to have met you and your wife, Judy, because you are both active and dynamic individuals in the community. Your accomplishments and achievements have demonstrated that taking part in the community does make a difference. Best wishes and thank you again for your unselfish kindness, support and encouragement." 劉梅蕾師母," wrote Mrs. Belinda M. Liu to President Dr. Tony Lei of WBTI and his wife Judy. Praise God!*12 "It'll be really a challenge and honor to be the Governor of Nevada and the Chairman of the Advisory Board of WBTI onece I'm elected in Office in January 2007. It's my great pleasure to take the responsibility," said U. S. Congressman James Gibbons at the Business Mixier held by Asian Republicans of Nevada at April 23, 2006 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The agreement was made by Jim to President Dr. Tony Lei of WBTI through a pleasant conversation between the two parties during the Event.*13 Jim is Governor of Nevada starting from January 1, 2007. It is significant for Dr. Kenny C. Guinn to write President Dr. Tony Lei of WBTI as in the following: "It is only with the dedication and commitment of good people like yourself that I will achieve my goal of becoming Governor of this great state. Dema and I can't thank you enough for your assistance and your positive activivities in the community." *14 Kenny was Nevada Governor for eight years until December 31, 2006. "When I take a step back and look at my life, I can't help but think how bless I am for all God has given to me. So many times, we take what we have for granted, but it's really not until we have lost everything, that we realize the true beauty in our downfalls - the strength to rise again," wrote Miss Frances Liu, Berlinda's daughter.*15 It is quoted from one of the prefaces (written by Miss Frances Liu) of the book "「為孩子的屬靈品格禱告」". The book was written by Mrs. Belinda M. Liu. "Shalom! Tony & Judy: 我在星期一早上就收到此專欄已上網頁的好消息, 很驚? WBTI 的迅速作業, 我也將此專欄印出, 與我的同工們分享, 我們都很興奮, 此專欄真是應證了神的作為超出所求所想的. 也謝謝你們給我機會與你們一起有份於神國度的擴展! Belinda," wrote Mrs. Belinda M. Liu early in the morning to Washington Business and Technology Institute. Pastor Paul Huang has completed teaching his Sunday School on "Book of Ruth" on December 24, 2006. Attendants were enthusiastic. He will teach another Sunday School starting from January 2007. "It's my great honor to be named by President Dr. Tony Lei as the Honorary Chairman of Clark County District and Police Civil Commission (CCDAPCC) of Washington Business and Technolgy Institute (WBTI)," pointed out the Chief Justice of Nevada Supreme Court William Maupin at the Celebration Party to "Nevada Examiner" and "Reviewjournal.com" at the Steak House of Binion's Horseshoe Club, Las Vegas on October 10, 2002. "Please know that I irrevocably stand by my personal commitment to diversity issues in this state and that my sense of patriotism and faith in America stems from its embrace of that diversity." *16. On January 11, 2007, Miss Frances Chang forwarded WBTI a very good announcement of Dr. Samuel So's speech event. It included a brief introduction of Dr. So and the following information: Knowing the following facts, check the link to learnand register to test. >http://liver.Stanford.edu/Edu/Edu_materials.php >http://liver.stanford.edu/Mult/Mult_multimedia.php (1) Well known high incidence of liver disease among Chinese people. (2) For every 100 Chinese people, 10 people would be HBV carrier. According to past statistics, out of those 10 people, 2 to 3 people may end up lose their life due to liver disease or liver cancer (Not just in OLD people. It happens to Young people in their 20-30 too!). This statistics is stunning and we need to get educated about our own health. (3) Thus for every 100 people we invite to the seminar/event, we can potentially save 2 to 3 people's life. (4) For people who are not HBV carrier, they learn how to protect themselves from getting it. in addition, they learn how to read their test results (make sure that they really NOT a carrier! ). For people who don't know whether they are HBV carrier, the free screening will let them know about whether or not they are carrier. For people who are HBV carrier, the seminar will teach them how to ask their doctors for several simple tests to take care of their liver health. NOT all American doctors know about these tests, since this is generally NOT a problem for Caucasian.*17 Dr. Samuel So is a founder and director of Asian Liver Center at Stanford Hospital . ALC is an unique non-profit research institution with its focus on Asian high prevalence of liver disease in the United States. Dr. So originally from Hong Kong. He was a professor at the medical school of Washington University St Louis. In 1995, he founded Stanford Liver Research Center.*18 To ignite the city and country, we need more hero intellectuals with expertise, integrity, and humane spirit like Dr. Samuel So for community service! ------------------------------------------- References *1. Enthusiasm is a very beautiful word! By Tiffany Chang and PAI of WBTI*1Enthusiasm is important, especially very important to many things in our lives. We are pleased to quote the following three short but meaningful ones: ***** There is nothing greater than enthusiasm. ---Henry Moore ***** If you don't have enthusiasm, you don't have anything. ---Kemmons Wilson, Sr. ***** Nothing good or great can be done in the absence of enthusiasm. ---Tom Peters It's our pleasure to post a short story from "Speaker's Source Book II" by Glenn Van Ekeren: The word enthusiasm comes from the Greek roots en and theos and means "God within." It is a fire, a passion within. Real enthusiasm is not something you "put on" and "take off " to fit the occasion. It is a way of life. Apparently Theodore Roosevelt possessed that kind of passionate lifestyle. In 1883, according to Bernard Levin, writing in Enthusiasms (Crown Publishers), Roosevelt went buffalo hunting in the Badlands of South Dakota with a single companion, Joe Ferris. They nearly died of thirst, and they slept on the ground, saddles their only pillows. One night wolves caused their horses to bolt, and it took some time for the fleeing beasts to be recaptured. The men went back to sleep; it began to rain heavily and they awoke, finding themselves lying in four inches of water. Shivering between sodden blankets, Ferris heard Teddy Roosevelt exclaim, "By Godfrey, but this is fun!" Now that's enthusiasm!*2 ------------------------------------- References *1. Response to the State of the Union By Shelley Berkley*1I appreciate the presidents cordial and bipartisan tone and a number of his stated goals make sense, including getting rid of secret pork barrel projects that cost billions, and balancing the budget. I share these goals, and others such as improving education, securing our borders, and promoting alternative energy resources. But the president has stated these goals many times in the past, and has not drafted a budget or put forth the bipartisan effort to significantly achieve them. So the proof, again, will be in how the president actually performs over the next year, and whether he will work on practical solutions or fall back to the narrow ideological approach that has marked his first six years. I am willing to work to achieve shared goals, and hope the president will live up to his cooperative tone. In particular, there are some areas that the president will need to reconsider, if we are to make real progress. President Bush should support Democratic-led efforts in Congress to promote stem cell research, lower the cost of Medicare prescription drugs, to slash student loan rates in half, to boost clean energy production and to raise the minimum wage for millions of hardworking Americans. The House of Representatives under Speaker Nancy Pelosi passed all of these measures within recent days. Southern Nevada families also know that I support a balanced budget, higher gas mileage standards for cars and trucks and policies that will keep Las Vegas and other cities across the country safe from terrorist threats. The president said this evening that he wants to save Social-Security, but he should know that I will not support any effort to privatize a program that gives millions of Americans dignity and piece of mind. While the president identified a wide range of problems that we all face, the answers must come from working with Congress to pass legislation that addresses these challenges and moves our nation forward. On Healthcare If you have health insurance through your job, look out! The president has laid out a plan that robs Peter to pay Paul, as a leading business organization (the National Retail Federation) describes it. And labor organizations agree. This plan will increase taxes on millions of middle class families who have health insurance while only helping a relatively small number of lower income workers. Its a complicated, piecemeal scheme that that refuses to recognize that hundreds of thousands of Nevadans and nearly 50 million other Americans will be uninsured this year. Worse yet, President is playing a shell game with the tax code that creates a lot of losers and a few winners at best. This is hardly the comprehensive solution we needa solution born of health care professionals, insurers, and federal, state, and local governments working together to roll back medical cost inflation and provide cost-effective care emphasizing prevention and wellness. On Energy I agree with President Bush that we need to invest more in renewable energy and alternative fuels, but there is no way that I can support his call for more nuclear power. Building more Nuclear power plants will only create more nuclear waste with no where to go, and in turn, that will increase pressure to open Yucca Mountain. Wind, solar, geothermal and other forms of clean power are the future for Nevada and our nation. We need energy independence, not more toxic nuclear waste waiting to be dumped in Nevada. Once again President Bush has acknowledged that America is dangerously dependent on foreign oil, but in his six years in his office, his only answer to this critical issue has been to give taxpayer dollars to oil companies already making record profits. I recently voted for legislation that repeals these subsidies to big oil in order can fund new energy breakthroughs and President Bush should support our efforts in Congress to promote energy independence. On Iraq Troop Surge As I have stated over recent weeks, I oppose the presidents troop surge. It is not a substitute or a clear plan for victory in Iraq. And while I agree that we all wish this war was over and won, the President has failed to define what victory is and what the conditions for bringing our troops home would be. The time is past due to apply serious pressure on the Iraqi government to take over the hazardous duty of fighting terrorists on the streets of Baghdad and in the deserts of Anbar Province. I do not see in the presidents comments a plan that will reduce our casualties and set the stage for stability in Iraq and the redeployment of our troops. The president also ignored the increased violence and chaos in Afghanistan. This is a major omission and it raises questions about just how well the president has thought out his plans for the broader war on terror. I do support the presidents proposal to increase the size of our Army and Marine combat forces. On Iran The president spoke numerous times about extremists and radical elements supported by Iran and about Iran's pursuit of weapons of mass destruction. However, much like Iraq, he failed to outline a plan to contain Iran, to reduce the influence of radical elements, to contain their nuclear program, and to prevent their acquisition of weapons of mass destruction. ------------------------------------------- Reference *1. The State of the State Remarks by Governor Jim Gibbons to the 74th Session of the Nevada Legislature By James A. Gibbons*1Speaker Buckley, Majority Leader Raggio, Lieutenant Governor Krolicki, members of the Senate and Assembly, honorable Justices of the Supreme Court, constitutional officers, distinguished guests, and my fellow citizens: It is indeed a pleasure to be here. As the 29th Governor of Nevada, I am humbled and privileged to appear before you tonight and excited to share my vision with you for the future of our great state of Nevada. Before I do, I would like to thank my wife, Dawn, for her love, insight, guidance and support. As a former member of this Assembly, shes no stranger to this process, and as First Lady she has already shown her effectiveness, particularly in raising public awareness of the dangers of methamphetamine use. I also want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to my entire family for their many sacrifices and total dedication throughout my 18 years of public life. Thank you. On this historic occasion, I would like to recognize a remarkable Nevadan who has persevered every day since arriving in Las Vegas in 1980. Please join me in saluting Barbara Buckley as the first female speaker in Nevada history. She and I have proven we can effectively work together, as we did in suspending the nurses strike in Las Vegas last month, and I am confident we can build upon our past success by mutually rejecting the counterproductive tug and pull of partisan politics. Please rise as I become the first Nevada Governor to say these words: Madame Speaker, I congratulate you and look forward to working with you to create long-term, meaningful results for all Nevadans. I was first elected to the Nevada Assembly in 1989 and I am especially delighted to work again in this chamber. Tonight I would like to recognize my colleagues from that 1989 Assembly, who continue to devote countless hours working for the citizens of Nevada. Mr. Marvel, Mr. Carpenter, Mr. Arberry and Senator McGinness, its a pleasure to work with you again. I want to also welcome incoming freshmen legislators Senator Joyce Woodhouse and Assembly members Bob Beers, David Bobzien, Ty Cobb, Ed Goedhart, Ruben Kihuen, James Ohrenschall, Tick Segerblom, James Settlemeyer, Lynn Stewart and Rosemary Womack. Welcome, and I look forward to working with you. Lastly, I want to thank all of those people who agreed to serve on my transition team, especially former Governors List and Bryan and Lieutenant Governor Hunt. I value your input and support. And, as my friends in the press have pointed out, for the handful of you who are not on my transition team, I value your input, too. As many of you know, I grew up in the railroad town of Sparks, Nevada, where I was raised by hard-working parents, Matilda and Leonard. My parents instilled in me the core values that have contributed greatly to my ability to fly a jet, become a lawyer, serve in Congress and now be a governor. They taught me at an early age about the power of partnership and the can-do pioneer attitude that makes us Nevadans different. Nevada has changed so much since my childhood years in Sparks. I remember as a kid we would joke that there is one person for each of our 110,000 square miles in Nevada. Today, that ratio would be 22 times greater. When I graduated from Sparks High School in 1962, Washoe County had a population of 85,000, Clark County had 127,000, and Ormsby County had about 8,000. By the year 2010, Clark County will have nearly two million residents and 170,000 hotel rooms--nearly as many rooms as in the combined cities of New York and Chicago. In that same period, Washoe County will grow to 500,000 residents and Carson City will have nearly 65,000. Its hard to believe that in less than 50 years our state has grown tenfold and Clark County 15-fold. These statistics force us to think differently, to adjust our mindset and become more innovative, especially when it applies to government. We simply cannot run the government the same way weve been doing it. As I said in my inaugural speech, we now have a unique opportunity and challenge to take the 143 years of growth and progress that has created the Nevada of today, and set a course for the future. A future that brings together the diverse communities and citizens of this great state into a common cause One Nevada. As a fighter pilot in Viet Nam and the Gulf War and former Vice Commander of the Nevada Air National Guard, I want to salute the men and women serving in our military around the globe. Nevada has one of the highest percentages of National Guard members serving in foreign lands, and a large number of them are engaged in the fight on terror in Iraq. On behalf of a profoundly grateful State, we appreciate everything they do to continue to defend our liberty. At this time I would ask for a moment of silence for the 48 fallen Nevadans who, since 2001, have given their lives to protect ours. On March 23, 2003, Nevada lost Marine Lance Corporal Donald J. Cline in Iraq, but his memory continues to live on through his family who joins us this evening. We must always remember those who have fallen for our freedom and we express our gratitude by recognizing Lance Corporal Cline’s two sons, Dillon and Dakota, and his loving wife, Tina. Thank you for being here. I also want to thank the Nevada Patriot Fund for raising private funds to support families like the Clines who have lost loved ones in war. Because I have such confidence in the Guard and the lessons associated with military service, I am including in this budget $1.7 million to the Nevada National Guard Youth Challenge Program, where troubled youth can be educated and given the ability to start over. My fellow Nevadans, our economy is robust, our workforce is teeming, our job growth is healthy and the unemployment rate is low; and for the first time as Governor, I am proud to announce that the state of our state is strong. Over the past biennium, Nevada has once again exceeded the nation in economic growth. While Arizona has moved ahead of Nevada as the fastest growing state in the U.S., weve added more than 100,000 residents annually since 2004. Both personal income and employment have continued to grow at rates far above the national average. While our state economy has greatly diversified over the past decade, gaming remains a driving force behind our revenue base. Several large new gaming projects are underway in Clark County and promise to further strengthen Nevadas economic status. In this 75th year of legalized gaming in Nevada, optimism in the tourism markets remains high. It is estimated more than 41 million people will visit Las Vegas in 2009 up from 35 million at the beginning of the decade. The total number of jobs in Nevada grew by 58,000 between November 2005 and 2006 and job gains in Nevada continue to outpace the nation as a whole. In order to sustain this economic strength, I firmly believe we need to form a new kind of government; one that is leaner, more responsive, a combine for new ideas, and most of all, a government that gives Nevadans the tools they need to make the most of their lives. This is my vision for Nevada. I have submitted to you a seven-billion-dollar budget that does not include new or increased taxes, but squarely focuses attention on innovation and new thinking. During the campaign, I met with thousands and thousands of Nevadans, who think as I do, that we must streamline our government and make it more responsive all while living within our means. I respectfully submit to you a budget that meets those objectives. Additionally, this budget is $158 million below the spending cap that was first enacted in 1979, but has not affected the budget process until now. For the first time in our states history, a spending cap will govern how we build budgets and how we spend money. This is the new budget reality in Nevada, and I believe we should embrace it. My budget also includes one-time appropriations to support vital areas of statewide community interest, including Opportunity Village in Las Vegas for $12 million; $10 million for the Nevada Cancer Institute; $10 million for the Lou Ruvo Brain Institute in Las Vegas; $6.5 million for courthouse improvements in White Pine County, $3.5 million for the Institute for Neuro-Immune Disease at the School of Medicine and $2 million for the Nevada Discovery Museum in Reno. These are critical Nevada assets, and I urge your approval. Exercising fiscal discipline demands more than a promise of no new taxes; it requires having the willpower to save in good times for those downturns and unexpected hardships that will inevitably come. We all recall the financial impacts our state absorbed after 9/11. To protect ourselves from man-made or natural catastrophes in the future, we must set aside money to shield our citizens from harm. My budget includes an additional $36 million to the rainy day fund for a total of $303 million. Some will argue it is not enough or too much, but nary a person can say this is not prudent planning. The 9/11 Commission made many recommendations to promote the security of the nation. One of its findings concluded that the nation and the states are vulnerable because public safety responders cannot communicate as one entity in a time of crisis. We need to address our lack of radio capability among all first responders. I will work with the Legislature to find the necessary funds to construct the Nevada Four Core Public Safety Radio Network. The security of Nevadans, our tourists, and our economy demand this action. During the campaign I promised Nevadans I would save them money. I will stand by my word. Tonight, I am proud to announce that I will be seeking a 4.6 percent decrease in the modified business tax, from .65 to .62 percent, resulting in $28 million in tax relief for 55,748 Nevada businesses. In addition, I am proposing to eliminate the $1,750 per branch excise tax for banks. Key among the Nevada workforce are dedicated public employees, including state employees, university employees and teachers. We must continue to invest in this important group of workers, and I am proposing a six percent increase in pay for these hardworking individuals. I propose a two percent increase in the first year and a four percent increase in the second year, which will free up an additional $31 million in funds, which I will reallocate to cover future pension and health care costs for retired public employees. If we dont address the multi-billion-dollar health care liability today, we will be sticking our heads in the sand and pretending this serious issue doesnt exist. As Nevada government leaders, we cannot afford to pretend. ... ................................. In closing, I can assure you that I have not forgotten my early life lessons about the power of partnership and the importance of the pioneer can-do attitude that makes us Nevadans different. I am proud to be your Governor. God bless America. And God bless the Great State of Nevada. Thank you. ------------------------------------------- Reference *1. It was already popular for the past years to hold dinner parties to pay special tribute to elected offficials, but most of them were civil administratives or civic representatives. Dr. Tony Lei initiated to hold event and dinner party to pay a spcial tribute to the judicial professionals through elections in Nevada. Justice Nancy Becker was the first one selected by him to pay a tribute. A successful event and dinner party was held for her on May 23, 2001 at Harbor Palace Restaurant in Las Vegas. It was chaired by Dr. Tony Lei, President of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI); Theresa Malone, Member of Nevada State Board of Education; Dr. R. D. Prabhu, Chairperson of CAN-DO; and Dr. Joey Villaflor, Member of Nevada Board of Health. We the Asian American communities have continuously achieved the efforts for other judicial professionals since then. "To dedicate to the creed of Washington Business and Technology Institute, it's my challenge as an Associate Fellow of it's Public Administration Institution (PAI) to endeavor with all the intellectuals of this Institute to improve the quality of life of the people of Nevada," said Jennifer Togliatti at the Dinner Party on May 17, 2002. The Event with dinner was held by the Asian American Community to pay a special tribute to District Judges Michelle Leavitt and Jennifer Togliatti at the Harbor Palace Seafood Restaurant in Las Vegas. Judge Michelle Leavitt deserves special recognition of her expertise, integrity, conscientious and dedicated professionalism. She has been a bright Associate Fellow of PAI since 2000. "Thanks to Dr. Tony Lei, Dr. R. D. Prabhu, and Attorney David Amesbury to chair this Event and Party. Together with knowledge as the power of rightiousness, we may build a community where this and future generations will have more opportunities and advantages to live a prosperous and healthy life," said Judge Michelle Leavitt at the Dinner Party.*13 We are deeply regret and sorry that Judge Michelle Leavitt's father passed away weeks ago on a Friday. Myron Leavitt, 73, a Justice of the Nevada Supreme Court, who had a long political career in Nevada. He was born in Las Vegas. Myron was a football and track athlete at the University of Nevada at Reno, where he earned a journalism degree. He worked a year as sports editor of the Las Vegas Review-Journal before studying law at the University of Utah.*14 Myron had private law practice for 28 years. He served as a Councilman of Las Vegas, a Commissioner Clark County and a Justice of the Peace before winning election as Lieutenant Governor of Nevada from 1979 to 1983. Leavitt served as a Clark County District Court Judge for 15 years before winning a Supreme Court position as one of its Justice in 1998.*15 The late Myron Leavitt is honored as a Memorial Fellow of the Public Administration Institution (PAI) of Washingoton Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) on February 4, 2004. "I can't help thinking about Justice Myron Leavitt, our long time Asian American friend of Nevada, who died so unexpectedly. This brings to my mind the urgency of our times in Las Vegas. We note the vanishing of many heroes that built the world of Nevada after 1963. We recognize that the best way to honor those who have gone before us is to rise up and find the greatness in our own lives, the strength of charater, the vision and courage, the determination and selflessness to address the challenges that still lay before us," says Dr. Tony Lei, President of WBTI, for the Event and Dinner Party held by the Asian American Community of Nevada on February 4, 2004 in Las Vegas. Asian American Community has won recognition for contribution to Nevada by the American Mainstream. The main reason for this recognition is the great and cooperative wisdom and effort that we the Asian American communities have continuously participated and offered to the mainstream society in Nevada.*16 -------------------------------- References *1. A sound corporate philosophy and mission By Tiffany Chang and PAI of WBTI*1We are impressed by what Dr. Peter Drucker said that, "Only a clear definition of the mission and purpose of the business makes possible clear and realistic business objectives. It is the foundation for priorities, strategies, plans, and work assignments. It is the starting point for the design of managerial jobs, above all, for the design of managerial structures." A business is a reflection of the leader. As a manager, the important thing is not happens when you are not there. It is important of what happens when you are not there. We are pleased to quote the following three short but meaningful ones: ***** The ultimate responsibility of a leader is to facilitate other people's development as well as his own. ---Fred Pryor ***** American business needs a lifting purpose greater than the struggle of materialism. ---Herbert Hoover ***** If you don't invest very much, then defeat dosen't hurt very much and winning is not exciting. ---Dick Vermeil It's our pleasure to post a short story from "Speaker's Source Book II" by Glenn Van Ekeren: The ServiceMaster Corporration serves as a beautiful example of a company that thoroughly integrates its corporate philosophy and mission into day-to-day affairs. Founded by Marion E. Wade, the story of its conception, genesis and growth is told in Wade's book, God is Counsel. Kenneth T. Wessner, Chairman of the Board of ServiceMaster, states: "The philosopgy of a company determines the character and nature of business it conducts. The climate of a company is created by the concepts of managing and life that govern its policies and practices. The philosophy of ServiceMaster and the words we used to express that philosophy have been carefully conceived, nurtured, and refined through years of thought, work, and commitment. Our company philosophy is expressed in four objectives. These four staterment are the foundation upon which everything we do is built. To honor God in all we do. To help people develop. To pursue excellence. To grow profitably. For the people of ServiceMaster, their work is not merely the making of a living; it is a way of life." That solid philosophy has helped ServiceMaster become one of the largest cleaning service conglomerates in the world. ------------------------------------- References *1. Here they come, with dreams 51 Miss America hopefuls welcomed to Las Vegas By John Przybys [[[Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman shares a laugh with Miss Nevada Caydi Cole during a ceremony Friday to welcome Miss America Pageant contestants to Las Vegas. Las Vegas is hosting the Jan. 29 ceremony for the second year in a row. Photos by Christine H. Wetzel.]]] Miss America hopefuls meet the public during a welcoming ceremony at the Aladdin on Friday. The new Miss America will succeed reigning Miss America 2006 Jennifer Berry.*1 They stepped to the microphone and, singing the praises of the United States from Alabama to Wyoming, introduced themselves, reveling in the knowledge that one of them would be crowned Miss America 2007. In all, 51 Miss America contestants were officially welcomed to Las Vegas on Friday. It should have been 52, but Miss Virgin Islands' flight was delayed; the 51st contestant is from the District of Columbia. Las Vegas is the site of the Miss America Pageant for the second year in a row. The telecast will be Jan. 29 from the Aladdin Theatre. This year's contest comes at a bizarre time in the pageant world. In December, Miss USA Tara Conner came close to losing her crown for allegedly partying a bit too hard, while Miss Nevada USA Katie Rees lost her crown a short time later after racy photos of her hit the Internet. The nonprofit Miss America program is unrelated to the Miss USA/Miss Universe pageant family. But as contestants prepared for introductions at the Aladdin on Friday afternoon, the excitement of tourists, gawkers and pageant fans signaled that Miss America had lost none of her luster. This from a hotel employee talking to a buddy: "I wish I'd have brought my camera." This from an excited woman who caught a glimpse of the contestants preparing for their big entrance: "They are here!" as if she hadn't believed it until that moment. And even this from a guy whose excitement and devotion began to border on creepy: "Yeah, bring it on." Shelley Hiestand of New Zealand heard about the ceremony on the radio and decided to check it out. "My mum was into beauty pageants," she said. "She won a mother-daughter competition when I was 6 years old." Sam Daines and Cleo Kiley are from South Africa but are studying for MBAs in North Carolina. They were visiting Las Vegas for a break before resuming classes and checked out the ceremony out of curiosity. "I think it's just the novelty, why we're here," Daines said. Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman presented roses to the contestants as they took the microphone to introduce themselves with enthusiastic plugs for the states that had sent them here. The crowd favorite was Miss Nevada, who drew applause and cheers for her simple but effective line, "I'm the hometown girl, I'm from Las Vegas, and I'm Caydi Cole of Nevada." Cole, 22, a graduate of the Las Vegas Academy of International Studies, Performing and Visual Arts, said she was born and raised here, her parents were born and raised here, and her grandparents weren't born here but have lived here a long time. Cole, who advanced to the Miss Nevada pageant in July after winning the Miss Clark County crown, performed a jazz vocal to "Blues in the Night" for the talent portion of the state pageant. She described the Miss America experience as "surreal" but said it's exciting, too. According to the Miss America organization, the pageant began in 1921 as an Atlantic City businessman's gimmick to extend the summer tourist season. Today, the organization says, the pageant is the world's leading provider of scholarships to young women. The new Miss America will succeed reigning Miss America 2006 Jennifer Berry.*2 --------------------------------------- References *1. Przybys, John. Messages from President Dr. Andrew Benton of Pepperdine University, U. S. A. (Conciseness) By Dr. Andrew K. Benton and GSBPA of WBTI*1I challenge those who are planning our future to dream large and worthy dreams. To secure a billion dollar endowment, to increase our presence nationally, and to enable the service of our scholars, both faculty and student. I urge bold dreams of improved programs internationally, a sense of mission and community at our graduate campuses and the provision of facilities and programs on this Malibu campus rivaling the best anywhere.*2 WE ARE AWASH IN INFORMATION TODAY, with what is being done, how, and by whom, but the truly crucial question to ask is why? What is its purpose? ................................... ..... The message reminds us of many things, but especially, it turns us again to our purpose: educating the hearts as well as the minds of the students who come our way. Therein rests our unique purpose.*3 ....................................... Minful of the purpose behind all that we strive to do, we move forward with confidence, fortunate guardians of a trust that we must ensure for future generation.*4 Promise are important to our community. The promise we make today provide the foundation for the work we will do tomorrow. Faithfulness to our heritage ennobles and illuminates all that we do. I have not forgotten the pormise I made in my inaugural address as I took office in the year 2000.*5 Since beginning the leadership opportunity, I continue to believe that our greatest challenge are contained in the areas of resources, deversity, heritage, community, and scholarship. We have managed our resources well during this challenging period. We have increased our diversity. I think our heritage provides light, really good light, for learning. We illumininate lives with immutable truths and notions of oughtness and rightness. We ask no quarter in our competition with the finest, shinning institutions of learning in America, and we offer the brilliance and the unique dimension of values in our classes. We invite the presence of God in the midst of all that we do: that, more than anything else, lights our way. As much as I feel urgency about other things, I feel urgency about fidelity and constancy and stewarship in our heritage of faith. there is power in imagery, and there is power in words. Here are some of the most powerful works I've seen --- our mission statement: "Pepperdine is a christian university committed to the highest standards of academic excellence and Christian values, where students are strenghtened for lives of purpose, service, and leadership."*6 --------------------------------------------- References *1. To serve, we need only a heart full of grace and a soul generated by love By Tiffany Chang and PAI of WBTI*1It is obvious that man or woman is himself or herself a traveler. The good purpose for mankind in this world is not "to have and to hold" but "to give and serve." The service that we render to other people is really like the rent we pay for our room on this earth. We are sure that the people who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve. We are pleased to quote the following three short but meaningful ones: ***** From now on, any definition of a successful life must include serving others. ---George Bush ***** When people are serving, life is no longer meaningless. ---John Gardner ***** One need not be a servant to be able to serve. ---Victor Frankl*2 It's our pleasure to post a short story from "Speaker's Source Book II" by Glenn Van Ekeren: Twenty-five centuries ago, Lao-tse, a Chinese sage, offered this profound insight; "The reason why rivers and seas receives the homage of a hundred mountain streams is that they keep below them. Thus they are able to reign over all the mountain streams. So the sage, wishing to be above men, putteth himself below them; wishing to be before them, he putteth himself behind them. Thus, though his place be above men, they do not feel his weight; though his place be before them, they do not count it an injury." So it is with humankind. Those who wish to yield the greatest influence will unselfishly position themselves below others, so as to serve them better. Bruce Barton told a parable two seas in Palestine that expounds on the wisdom of Lao-tse. One sea is flesh. Fish live in it. Trees and bushes grow near it. Children splash and paly in it. The river Jordan flows into this sea with sparkling water from the hills. People build their homes near it. Every kind of life is happier because it is there. The same river Jordan flows south into another sea. Here there are no fish, no green things, no children playing, no homes a building. Stale air hangs above its waters, and neither man nor beast will drink of it. What makes the difference between these neighbor seas? Not the Jordan River. It empties the same good water into both. Nor is the soil or the countryside. The differnece is that the Sea of Galilee receives water but does not keep it. For every drop that flows in, another drop flows out. The giving and receiving go on in equal measure. The other sea hoards its income. Every drop it gets it keeps. The Sea of Galilee lives and lives. The other sea gives nothing. It is called the Dead Sea. There are also two kinds of people in this world---those Dead Sea people who take without giving back, and the givers who remain fresh and vibrant by freely sharing of themselves. ------------------------------------- References *1. Reinstatement of Joint Veterans Committee Legislative Hearings By Harry M. Reid*1Dear Friends, It is my strong belief that our veterans are our nations greatest heroes and deserve to be commended and compensated as such. In my continuing effort to fight for Nevada veterans, we achieved a huge victory last week with the reinstatement of the traditional joint hearings process in which veterans and military service organizations can appear before the Veterans Affairs Committees. These hearings are an imperative forum for veterans to voice their concerns and express their needs while simultaneously providing the House and Senate the opportunity to learn how to best provide for our nations veterans. This choice reverses the decision from the other side of the aisle in the House of Representatives last Congress which stopped the hearings and suspended this vital symposium on veteran needs. The new leadership of the 110th Congress believes that veterans deserve to be heard and I am pleased to be a part of this effort. I have always been a strong advocate for our men and women in uniform. In addition to reinstating the traditional joint hearings process, I also introduced a bill last year called the Combat-Related Special Compensation Act of 2006 which provides pro-rated retirement benefits to military personnel who are forced into early retirement. In 2004, I also proposed legislation to provide full concurrent receipt of military and disability pay to veterans with 100 percent service-related disability. Our veterans have served this nation honorably. The time has come for this nation to serve them. I am proud to be an advocate for the thousands of veterans throughout the state of Nevada who have dedicated their lives to protecting our citizens and preserving our way of life. Our veterans deserve the very best benefits and health care, and the reinstatement of the traditional joint hearings process will be a very important step in recognizing these brave men and women for their service. I look forward to working with the Administration, the veterans community, and my colleagues in the House and Senate to ensure that our troops, veterans, and military families receive the benefits, health care, and representation that they have earned and deserve. My best wishes to you, Senator Harry Reid [[[A Message From U.S. Senator Harry Reid, Putting Nevada First]]]*2 -------------------------------------------- References *1. About Senator Harry Reid (a concise one by the Editor of this flier.) Harry M. Reid is the Democratic Leader (now Majority Leader) in the U.S. Senate, a man who commands the respect of colleagues from both parties, and a powerful advocate for Nevadas middle-class families. But he still lives in Searchlight and he is still guided by the lessons and values he learned there. The Las Vegas Sun newspaper summarized Reids story by saying that he has gone from underdog to Senates top dog. Parade Magazine, the nations largest weekly magazine, identified Senator Reid as one of a handful of leaders in Washington with integrity and guts. Since Nevadans elected him to the Senate in 1986, Harry Reid has developed a reputation as a consensus builder and a skillful legislator. Even his Republican colleagues praise his reasoned, balanced approach. Senate Judiciary Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) has said, We all respect Senator Reid. He is one of the moderate voices around here who tries to get things to work. And former GOP Leader Trent Lott said, Harry Reid is out there finding a solution. I enjoy working with him very much. He was elected to the Senate in 1986, and re-elected in 1992, 1998 and 2004. He has served as the chairman or senior Democratic member on several important committees and subcommittees. Reid is a tireless worker, and it isnt unusual for him to be the first Senator of either party to arrive at the Capitol in the morning and the last to go home at night. *2. Reid, Harry. Tourism development and prosperity between China and Nevada By Terri Malone, Tiffany Chang, and PAI of WBTIVacationing in Nevada is always a "sure bet" for tourists seeking the warm desert sun, snow-capped mountains, crystalline lakes, or lavish hotels and casinos. For outdoor adventure, try hitting the ski slopes at Lake Tahoe or taking a helicopter tour over the majestic Hoover Dam. For more fast-paced entertainment, head for the glittery casinos of Reno, Laughlin, or the famous Las Vegas Strip, where you'll also find exquisite shopping, dining, golfing, and nightclub acts! Take a gamble on a trip to Nevada, and you'll be THRILLED with what you get in return!!*1 The following two articles were published by Google. It is significant to the tourism development and prosperity between China and Nevada: ********************* Tourism development and prosperity for Nevada inspired and encouraged by Governor Kenny Guinn and Lt. Governor Lorraine Hunt of Nevada*2 By Tiffany Chang and PAI of WBTI*3 "The Nevada Commission on Tourism (NCOT) has approved $1 million in grants to help rural communities promote attractions, adventures and special events that draw visitors and feed local economies," stated in the Press Release from the Office of Governor Kenny Guinn on July 1, 2004.*4 According to the above Press Release: "The Rural Tourism Grants make it possible for rural communities with limited resources to purchase advertising and promotional materials such as maps and brochures, create videos and DVDs, maintain Web sites, obtain professional services to develop visitor attractions, participate in travel industry trade shows and engage in other tourism-building activities." "The success of the Rural Tourism Grants is remarkable," Lt Gov. Lorraine Hunt, NCOT chair, said.*5 "Visitor volume, convention business, and room occupancy have risen significantly in rural Nevada, and I am confident these grants will continue to enhance Nevada position as a global tourist destination." Governor Kenny Guinn of Nevada reminds us that tourism is the bedrock of Nevada's economy. To expand and diversify our domestic and international markets are absolutely essential to our long-term economic growth and stability.*6 The annual "Governor's Conference on Tourism" was held by the Governor at Caesears Palace on December 15-17. He joined the members of the Commission on Tourism to examine the latest tourism industry issue and trends. The theme was "Celebrating Deversity". It was chosen to draw attention to Nevada's efforts to broaden both its tourism product and market. The Conference on December 15-17 was held in celebrating the diversity that would make the Silver State a perennial leader in worldwide tourism. Governor Kenny Guinn and Lt. Govenor Lorraine Hunt said that Nevada's tourism industry must continue to expand its offerings and reach out to diverse markets that range from outdoor enthusiasts to residents of the world's most populous nation. Speaking at the general session of the Governor's Conference on Tourism at Caesars Palace, he and she each praised Nevada's continuing efforts to supplement its gaming-based core with non-gaming amenities such as shopping, dinning, and outdoor recreation.*7 "I can't overstate the significance of China's potential as a visitor market for Nevada," Lt. Governor Hunt said. "I found modern cities rife with elements of Western culture such as Starbucks Coffee, MTV, the Rat Pack-era music of Frank Sinatra, etc. Up to 10 percent of the country's approximately 1.4 billion residents can now afford to travel overseas, which has positioned China as Nevada's "newest and most-modern market" for tourism." In mid-October, the second top official of the State of Nevada and Nevada Commission on Tourism Exective Director Bruce Bommarito led an approximately 20-member delegation of state tourism, hotel, and private industry representatives on a ten days tour through Beijing, Hong Kong, Macau, and Shanghai. Governor Guinn expresses that he can not overemphasize the significance and importance of bringing attention to all the attractions to Nevada at a time when it faces unprecedented competition for gaming customers. He believes that we are wise to expand our marketing efforts and focus on developing markets in places such as Asia. It is significant for him to point out that in addition to gaming, Nevada has phenomenal cultural, historic, and recreational resources that we must continue to promote. The Governor emphasizes that for our state's economy to thrive, all of the Silver State's tourism opportunities must be effectively marketed to both domestic and international visitors.*8 Lt. Governor Lorraine Hunt points out that she sees the will in the Chinese people and elected officials to make more opportunities and conviences for them to travel America. "They know they want to participate in the world economy," said the Lt. Governor. In addition to the efforts of the City, County, and State of Nevada, Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) has dedicated to help promote the cooperation and development of culture, education, and tourism among Asian countries and Nevada since its establishment on January 8, 1996. With Lt. Governor Lorraine Hunt's inspiration, WBTI and Sally Yu assisted successfully the establishments of the Sister States of Qinghai of China and Nevada, and the Sister Cities of Jiayuguan of China and North Las Vegas. WBTI has been honored by China Business Chain, Inc. (CBCI), Shangshai Development and Municipal Government Cooperation Office (SPMGCO), and China State Development and Planning Commission as Organzer of Nevada Expo Mission to China. WBTI is also invited by Xiamen, Fuchien, China to organize a team with high-ranking officials for both educational and business cooperation and development Between Nevada and Fukien. U. S. Congresswoman Shelley Berkely, Nevada Lt. Governor Lorraine Hunt, and Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman have been invited as its honorable Chairpersons.*9 Lt. Governor Hunt also plans to work with Nevada's congressional delegation to improve the likelihood of opening the travel corridors between the United States and China. Members of the Civil Aviation Administration of China agreed to study the feasibility of direct air service to and from Las Vegas, as well as cargo flights through Reno/Tahoe International Airport. An Office in Beijubg will be opened by the Nevada tourism commission in March 2004 to further develop the Chinese market. In reference to separate resort now being developed by Las Vegas Sands and Wynn Resorts, Lt. Governor Hunt pointed that, "With all of the Nevada gaming companies's casino projects going up in Macau, we're definitely on the Chinese radar." Dr. Bill Eadington, Professor of University of Nevada, Reno, addressed the Governor's Conference on Tourism at Caesars Palace that the profitability of Wynn Las Vegas and the continuing transformation of the California tribal casino market are the biggest question marks facing the Las Vegas economy. "People are attracted to Las Vegas when there's something spectacular to see, " Professor Eadington said.*10 Impressed by the Chinese tourists' saying that "If you didn't visit Las Vegas, you didn't visit America," we need to put more efforts and wisdom together for the development and prosperity of our tourism through the multiple cooperation of construction industry, business organizations, cultural facilities, and educational institutions in Nevada. "Through the perspectives by the nature and in reality, effective lauching for our tourism on the Chinese markets will be more practical with an enphasis on the cooperation and development of business, cultural, and education among China, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Sigapore. We can't just expect them to come for visit or gaming. Good programs such as CBM, CEH, CPM, etc. in education and business for them by the time at their visiting will be reallly one of the strenuous and fruitful reasons for many people to come to Nevada," said Dr. Tony Lei, President of Washington Business and Technology Institute. ******************** Nevada and Qinghai of China Builds Sister States By Terri Malone and Tiffany Chang Representative Officials from the State of Nevada invited by Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) to welcome Governor Zhao Leji and the delegation from China at the Event and Party on June 26, 2002 are: Lieutenant Governor Lorraine T. THINGS YOU NEVER KNEW YOUR CELLPHONE COULD DO... Fwd by Lillian Tsai*1The following information were all the opinion by the original reporter who is responsible to all its contents. WBTI has no obligation to its responsibility: There are a few things that can be done in times of grave emergencies.*2 Your mobile phone can actually be a life saver or an emergency tool for survival. Check out the things that you can do with it: (1) *The Emergency Number worldwide for **Mobile** is 112.* If you find yourself out of coverage area of your mobile network and there is an emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number for you, and interestingly this number 112 can be dialed even if the keypad is locked. **Try it out.** (2) *Subject: Have you locked your keys in the car? Does you car have remote keys?* This may come in handy someday. Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their cell phone from your cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other "remote" for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk). Editor's Note: *It works fine! We tried it out and it unlocked our car over a cell phone!"* (3) Subject: Hidden Battery power Imagine your cell battery is very low, you are expecting an important call and you don't have a charger. Nokia instrument comes with a reserve battery. To activate, press the keys *3370# Your cell will restart with this reserve and the instrument will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when you charge your cell next time. AND (4) How to disable a STOLEN cell phone? To check your Cell phone's serial number, key in the following digits on your phone: * # 0 6 # A 15 digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. If your phone gets stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless. You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either. If everybody does this, there would be no point in people stealing cell phones.*3 Please spread this useful information around Today is better than yesterday, tomorrow is better than today...PTL Best Regards, Lillian Tsai (Lei Rong-Sheng Ր) -------------------------------------------- References *1.
