¡§My mom lived through the Depression, so I know that I¡¦ve got Depresssion-era values,¡¨ she says. ¡§Your own attitude is so important. I grew up in a two-bedroom, one-bath cinder block home in North Las Vegas. But my mother said, ¡¥Aren¡¦t we lucky? My house is paid for and I have money in the bank.¡¦ I know very wealthy people who have an attitude that they don¡¦t have anything.¡¨ ... she went to college.

¡§She said, ¡¥You know, you really should think about being a lawyer.¡¦ So, that¡¦s what I did,¡¨ Del Papa says.

She recalls her first months on the Nevada campus:

¡§I was very active. I majored in political science but I also majored in extracurricular activities. You name it, I did it.¡¨

While a student, she lived in a dorm and worked in food service. It hadn¡¦t been her first choice. As a book lover, she¡¦d really wanted to work in the library.

Dear Tony,

December 16, 2008-- Yesterday, I had the opportunity to address the Congressional Oversight Panel (COP) created by Congress to oversee the expenditure of the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) funds authorized in the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 (EESA). I focused my remarks to the COP on the impact that the nation¡¦s troubled economy has had on Nevada, including record foreclosures, rising unemployment rates and a continued lack of access to credit for businesses and consumers.*7

I also criticized the Treasury Department¡¦s handling of the TARP, saying that the first $350 billion spent on the plan has not helped struggling families or businesses in the Las Vegas Valley, including those who have lost their homes to foreclosure or have been unable to secure a reasonable mortgage as a result of the credit crisis.

A probe by the Nevada Office of the Attorney General has cleared Mendy Elliott of any wrongdoing after an exhaustive investigation. Federal Office of Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) officials questioned whether Elliott¡¦s routine involvement in the investigation of two job-related deaths at The Orleans Hotel-Casino in 2007 in Las Vegas may have been improper. At the time, Elliott was the head of the Nevada Division of Business and Industry, which includes Nevada OSHA.*8a

The Nevada Attorney General¡¦s Office disagreed with the federal report, citing in a memo that the investigation ¡§clearly vindicates you (Elliott).¡¨ Elliott is the Deputy Chief of Staff in the Office of Governor Jim Gibbons.*8b
