YUCCA MOUNTAIN DEVELOPMENTS BODE WELL FOR STATE By Dr. Kenny C. Guinn*1 The most recent revelation of falsified documents related to the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste project in Nevada further underscores what a dangerous and unnecessary project the federal government has sponsored for the past two decades. Last weeks news reports that U.S. Geological Survey employees falsified documents are a clear reminder that the Yucca Mountain project has never been presented with all of the facts in plain sight. The State of Nevada has had to fight the battle against Yucca Mountain on an uneven playing field that has apparently been lined with deception. And, in defiance of this obvious handicap, the State of Nevada seems to have finally taken the upper hand. Since a perplexing vote by Congress in July 2002 to override my veto and permit the Department of Energy to move ahead for licensure to construct the facility, developments have all been very much in the State of Nevadas favor regarding the future of Yucca Mountain. In July 2004, after years of litigation, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia handed Nevada a major legal victory in the fight to stop the nuclear waste dump when it threw out the Environmental Protection Agencys radiation health protection regulations that had been tailored for Yucca Mountain. The courts ruling effectively stopped DOE because Yucca Mountain, by virtue of its porous geology and other fundamental flaws, is incapable of meeting the more stringent health and safety regulations required by the court. Since then, the Bush Administration cut the FY 2006 Yucca Mountain budget in half, and the DOE has acknowledged a series of missed deadlines. Indications of waning support for the project from the nuclear industry have also followed, with statements by utility industry representatives advocating de-linking the repository from the industrys perceived ability to proceed with new nuclear power plants. Then, last week, Secretary of Energy Samuel Bodman announced that scientists working on DOEs Yucca Mountain project had falsified reports and data in critical site suitability and repository performance areas. The revelation set off a storm of outrage, not only from Yucca Mountain critics, but also from project proponents who viewed the falsification of scientific data and studies as a potentially fatal blow to Yucca Mountain. For Nevadas citizens, the recent revelations are good news. Given the events of past days, the question of if Yucca Mountain will crumble has become a question of when. I am extremely proud of the fact that Nevadans have chosen to fight this repository through all of the proper channels, in an intellectually honest and above-board manner. Those who have been involved are to be commended for being so vigilant during this fight. -------------------------------------- Reference *1. He co-founded Nevadans for Public Awareness. He also has donated his time as a Cub Scout Leader. Asians in America---Were the fastest growing ethnic Americans! By Tiffany ChangIt is our pleasure to post an article written by Rita Villadiego about the National Asian American Republican Coalition (NAARC). It was entitled "Fil-Am elected as head of Asian-American Republican coalition". The article was released by the Philipino Express Online. It was found by us in Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) through the searching of "Dr. Jasmine Brooks" on the Google.com at March 19, 2005: Fil-Am elected as head of Asian-American Republican coalition By Rita Villadiego*2 Washington, D.C., January 28, 2005 --- Vowing to empower Asian Americans, Dr. Sonny Carlota, a Filipino-American based in Tennessee was unanimously elected chairman of the National Asian American Republican Coalition (NAARC). Im proud to be a Tennessean of Filipino descent, said Dr. Carlota who shone in politics in 1983 when he was elected as Vice Mayor of Lakeland, his home city, in 1993. Other elected officers of the Coalition were Dr. Grace Shu (PA), 1st Vice Chair; Elena Brady (NV)*2, 2nd Vice Chair; Dolly de Leon (NV)*3, Secretary; Tran Dinh Truong (NY), Treasurer. Weve got work to do. The stakes are high. We need to empower the 13 million Asian Pacific Americans politically, economically, and socially, said Carlota. Were the fastest growing ethnic Americans. Yet theres a long list of unmet needs in the community. Carlota was appointed by President Bush to the Presidents Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in 2001-2003. He chaired the Commissions SubCommittee on Health which prepared a comprehensive report on health disparities among Asian Pacific Americans. Right recommendations on solving the Asian health needs were an integral part of the report submitted to the President. The NAARC is a diverse group of community leaders representing the major Asian Pacific Islander population that helped determine the final outcome of the 2004 presidential elections, Carlota said.*4 With participatory leadership, the newly elected national chairman said that he would work towards implementing a 5-Point Plan which are to: 1.) Broaden the base of membership nationwide by appointing ethnic co-chairs for each nationality, and have the co-chairs recognized by the State Republican Committees in their respective areas; 2.) Work for the appointment of qualified Asian Pacific Americans in federal, state, and local governments and the private sector; 3.) Encourage and support qualified Asian Pacific American Republicans to run for public office in the federal, state and local levels; 4.) Steer the ethnic republican groups to integrate with the activities of the State and County Republican Committees during primaries, federal, state and local elections; and 5.) Strengthen NAARCs working relationships with the White House, Republican Senators and Congressmen, the RNC, as well as the State, and local Republican Committees.*5 After the elections, Carlota announced a partial list of appointees to serve as part of his leadership team: Charles Wang (NY), co-chair, Chinese Americans; Paul Blanco (CA), co-chair, Filipino Americans; Dr. Sonny Lee (NJ), co-chair, Korean Americans; Dr. Jasmine Brooks*6 (NV), co-chair, Vietnamese Americans; Dr. Leo Pandac (CA), executive director; Rudy Asercion (CA), communications director; Jun Policarpio (NY), White House liaison; and Augustus Alzona (MD), political director.*7 We are pleased to learn that the Asian American Republican Coalition of Nevada - Clark County Chapter has been established in Las Vegas, Nevada. U. S. Senator John Ensign was awarded SPIRIT OF ENTERPRISE by U.S. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE By Tiffany Chang and PAI of WBTI*1It is our pleasue to learn that U. S. Senator John Ensign was awarded SPIRIT OF ENTERPRISE by U.S. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. The following is a post of the Press Release of Senator Jon Ensign from his Office in Washington, D. C. on Thursday, March 10, 2005: Washington, D.C. Senator John Ensign today received the Spirit of Enterprise award from the United States Chamber of Commerce for his voting record during the 2nd session of the 108th Congress.*2 For Americas economic future to remain prosperous, we must encourage pro-growth policies so that we continue to be the leader in innovation and entrepreneurship, Ensign said. I am honored to be recognized by the Chamber. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce gives out the award based on key business votes by Congressional members and ranks them in its annual publication, How They Voted. Members of Congress who support pro-business positions on at least 70 percent of the key votes receive the award. Senator Ensign was well above that mark with a 91 percent for votes cast on pro-growth legislation. It is critical to have members of Congress fighting for American business and their employees at this time of economic expansion and opportunity, said Thomas J. Donohue, Chamber President and CEO. John Ensign is a leader who has voted time and again to create jobs, improve our domestic security, and promote economic expansion. Pro-growth policies are critical to small businesses in Nevada because they stimulate the economy and promote job creation, Ensign said. I will continue to support legislation that keeps Nevadas economy flourishing. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the worlds largest business federation, representing more than three million businesses and organizations.*3 The following introduction about U. S. Senator John Ensign edited by WBTI on December 26, 2004 was post on Reviewjournal.com and published by Google.com, Aol.com, Msn.com, among others: About Senator John Ensign (By the editor of this flier)*4 Senator John Ensign has served the people of Nevada from his days as a veterinarian, small business owner, and U.S. Congressman to his present role as the 24th U.S. Senator for Nevada. Senator Ensign was raised in northern Nevada and moved to southern Nevada where he graduated from Clark High School. He attended UNLV and earned a Bachelors degree from Oregon State University. He received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Colorado State University in 1985. Senator Ensign immediately began practicing veterinary medicine and opened the first 24-hour animal hospital in Las Vegas. Throughout his career Ensign has fought for smaller, more effective government, lower taxes, a strong national defense and aggressive approach to combating terrorists, increased parental control in education choices, and quality health care for Nevada's seniors and veterans. Senator Ensign was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2000 and serves on the following committees: Armed Services; Budget; Commerce, Science, and Transportation; Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP); Small Business and Entrepreneurship; and Veterans Affairs. Ensign is Chairman of the Readiness and Management Support Subcommittee of the Armed Services Committee. In addition, Senator Ensign chairs the High Tech Task Force and serves as Vice Chairman of the Republican Steering Committee, a group that shapes the partys legislative agenda. Since taking office, Ensign has worked hard to fulfill his promises to the people of Nevada. His Education High Growth Grant amendment, which brings tens of millions of extra dollars to Nevada schools, was included in the education bill signed into law by President Bush. The Prescription Discount Card for Seniors, a key part of Ensign's prescription drug plan, was endorsed by President Bush and would allow many seniors to cut their prescription drug bills by 40%. On the environmental front, enactment of the Ensign/Reid Clark County Lands Bill will protect environmentally sensitive areas in southern Nevada, allow recreational opportunities to continue, and improve the quality of life. Ensign has taken the lead on technology issues as well. His "Dot Kids" legislation creates a subdomain on the Internet where children can explore the Internet without the fear of being exposed to material parents may deem inappropriate. His bill to delay the 700 MHz spectrum auction from moving forward was a critical step toward improving our nation's wireless network. Both were signed into law by President Bush. Ensign spends his workweek in Washington and his weekends in Las Vegas with his wife, Darlene, and their three children-Trevor, Siena, and Michael. John has been honored as Advisor and Vice Chairman of the Advisory Board of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI) since November 2000.*5 ----------------------------------------- References *1. Sarahs life is a story of firsts By Dr. Harry Reid and PAI of WBTI*1Nevadas second statue in the U.S. Capitol's National Statuary Hall was dedicated March 9, 2005. The Sarah Winnemucca Statue will join Nevada's other statue of Patrick A. McCarran as the two statues contributed by the Silver State. The following speech is the one that I delivered at the dedication ceremony. It would be most inspired by our people here in Nevada for the story of Sarah Winnemucca: Sarah Winnemucca is Nevadas second statue in the Capitol. Our other statue, Senator McCarran, has been here for 45 years - which I believe marks the first time Sarah Winnemucca ever came in second to anyone. Sarahs life is a story of firsts.*2 She was the first female Native American to write a book. She set up Nevadas first school for Native American children. And she was one of the first individuals to navigate between her own culture and the settlers. As someone who showed so much courage in charting a new course, Sarahs statue fits in well among other first Americans in the Capitol, individuals like our first President George Washington.and the first woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, Jeanette Rankin. And with Sarahs statue, we experience another sort of first today. Sculptor Benjamin Victor becomes the youngest artist ever to complete a work for the National Statuary Hall Collection. None of us knew Sarah Winnemucca, but because of this 26 year-old man, we can get a glimpse of who she was as will thousands of visitors to our nations Capitol each year. And when they see this work, they will get a sense of Nevadas historyand our countrys history. One week ago, many of us gathered in this same spot to present Jackie Robinsons widow with the Congressional Gold Medal. We praised Jackie for breaking the color barrier not just in baseball, but in minds across the country. It is praise we can equally lavish on Sarah Winnemucca for the work she did on behalf of Native Americans over 125 years ago. Disillusioned by the treatment and relocation of the Paiute people, Sarah became an activist - - in addition to the many other roles she held, which included teacher, author and translator. Sarah traveled across the country, introducing Americans to her people and the struggles they faced through a series of lectures on the East Coast. She even visited Washington, DC to plead her case with President Hayes and the Secretary of the Interior only to be sent home with promises that would never be fulfilled. Having dealt with an indifferent U.S. government, it has been written that Sarah died believing she had not accomplished much unconvinced that her life had an impact. I think if she could see us today, she might change her mind. While our country and our culture remain far from perfect, we are further down the trail Sarah set out on a Century ago. And while she may have died believing she did not make a difference, her image in the Capitol is proof her story remains very much alive. It took 45 years for Nevada to get its second statue in the Capitol. When you consider what Sarah did in just 47 years of life, youve got to wonder what took so long. As this statue takes its permanent place, Im proud that Sarah is the newest face of Nevada in Washington, DC, and that as a state, we have helped ensure her legacy lives on for generations to come.*3 The following is a part of the article written for Senator Harry Reid being awarded "Outstanding Democrat of the Decade," by Tiffany Chang.*4 On October 22, 2000, U. S. Senator Harry Reid received the "Outstanding Democrat of the Decade" 1990's Award from the Paradise Democratic Club of Las Vegas (PDCLV) at the Skyview Room of the Bally's Casino and Hotel, Las Vegas. In the Program, the National Anthem was sung by Rose McKinny James. The Event was chaired by the President of PDCLV, John Ponticello. He introduced participants of all the elected officers, leaders of unions, persons campaigned for public service, among others. The Keynote Speaker was Senator Harry Reid. Special Speakers were former U. S. Senator Richard Bryan, U. S. Congresswoman Shelley Berkley, among others. Comments were offered by Rory Reid, Nevada State Democratic Party Chairman, and Danny Thompson, Secretary/Treasurer of Nevada State AFL-CIO. The heightlight of the Event was the presentation of the Outstanding Democrat of the Decade Award to U.S. Senator Harry Reid by the President of PDCLV, John Ponticello. U. S. Senator Reid graduated from Utah State University in 1961. He received Juris Doctor degree from George Washington University. On April 10, 1998, he was honored as Advisor and Vice Chairman of the Advisory Board of Washington Business and Technology Institute (WBTI).*5 PARADISE DEMOCRATIC CLUB OF LAS VEGAS' "OUTSTANDING DEMOCRAT OF THE YEAR RECEPTION" is HONORING U. NOTABLE NATIVE AMERICAN, NATIVE NEVADAN SARAH WINNEMUCCA HONORED IN WASHINGTON, D.C. By Dr. Kenny C. Guinn*1[[[......]]] Photo by Ryan McGinness During a ceremony held earlier today in the Rotunda of the United States Capitol, the remarkable 19th-century Native American and Native Nevadan, Sarah Winnemucca, was honored with the dedication of a statue of the notable activist and educator in National Statuary Hall. Sarah Winnemucca is only the second historic figure from Nevada to be so honored, joining a statue of Sen. Patrick McCarran. Sarah Winnemucca was one of the truly great women in the history of Nevada. She was a believer in the brotherhood of mankind, and lived an exemplary life that benefited others, whether they were Native Americans or white settlers who came to the state in the 19th century. The honor bestowed upon her memory today could not go to a more deserving figure in Nevadas history. The beautiful statue of Sarah Winnemucca was created by a talented young artist named Benjamin Victor, whose exquisite work culminated a four-year grassroots effort led by a number of dedicated and hardworking Nevadans. I signed into law legislation in 2001 that called for the creation of the statue, and the Nevada Womens History Project raised enough money for the statue to become a reality. Nevada First Lady Dema Guinn also played an important role in realizing these fundraising goals, traveling the state, personally raising more than $100,000 for the project and serving as honorary chairperson for the statue selection committee. The State of Nevada owes a sincere debt of gratitude to all of the Nevadans that embraced this important project. Todays ceremony, attended by all of the major leaders of the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives, including Nevada Sens. Harry Reid and John Ensign and Congressman Jim Gibbons, was a fitting tribute to a great Native America and Native Nevadan. Post through the courtesy of Las Vegas Review-Journal Friday, March 04, 2005 Copyright @ Las Vegas Review-Journal Where the Boys Are The Vienna Boys Choir brings more than 500 years of performance history to its Saturday concert By KEN WHITE REVIEW-JOURNAL Perhaps the top choir in the world, the 25-voice Vienna Boys Choir performs Saturday in Artemus Ham Hall. For more than 500 years, the Vienna Boys Choir has been acclaimed as the best group of choristers in the world. That's a heavy tradition to maintain, with a lot of attendant pressure. But Robert Rieder, choir master of the touring Vienna Boys Choir, which will perform Saturday at Artemus Ham Hall, says the group handles the fame well. "The audience and presenters expect us to be really good, so we have to have much effort," Rieder said in a recent phone interview from Yuma, Ariz. The choir has been on tour for more than four weeks with another three to go. "There is a lot of work to keep our name as the No. 1 choir in the world. We talk about right behavior, because everybody is looking at us as a special choir." A private, not-for-profit organization, the Vienna Boys Choir was founded in 1498 as part of the Vienna Hofmusikkapelle by Emperor Maximilian I for private Masses and concerts for the court. The choir has worked with famous composers and conductors such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Claudio Abbado, Leonard Bernstein, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Herbert von Karajan, Carlos Kleiber, Lorin Maazel, Riccardo Muti and Sir George Solti. There are 100 choristers divided into four choirs, each named after a composer connected with the choir: Anton Bruckner, Joseph Haydn, Franz Schubert and Mozart. Rieder is choir master of the Franz Schubert group. When Haydn belonged to the Cathedral Choir of St. Stephan, he sang with the court choir boys in the chapel of the Hofburg. Schubert's first compositions were written when he was with the choir boys. And as court organist, Bruckner rehearsed his composition for the Mass with the Vienna Boys Choir. Beginning with kindergarten, boys are taught music and given a general education through the elementary grades in the choir school, called the Augartenpalais, a baroque palace and former imperial hunting lodge in Vienna. At 10, the most talented boys are selected to join the choir and enter the choir's grammar school. The choristers range from 11 to 14 years old, attend boarding school together and receive a musical education. Each Sunday, the choir, accompanied by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Vienna State Opera Chorus, celebrates Mass at the Hofmusikkapelle in Vienna's Hofburg chapel, a tradition unbroken since the choir's inception. The four choirs give around 300 concerts and performances each year before nearly a half million people. Each group spends nine to 11 weeks of the school year on tour. And if you're wondering about those sailor outfits the choristers wear, that began in the 1920s when the suits were popular with boys. The choir has had the dress code ever since. Convincing parents to let their children board at the school has been a sticking point, Rieder said. "They know they're not going to get to see their boys that much." Rieder credits artistic director Gerald Wirth with the choir's international flavor. After spending part of the 1990s as artistic director of the Calgary Boys' Choir, he became the Choir's artistic director in 2001, and brought several choristers from the Calgary group back with him to Vienna. Among the Schubert choir's 25 choristers, two are from the United States, and one each from Mexico, Canada and Slovakia. The choir's program Saturday will include church music, gospel and Austrian folk songs, as well as songs from America, Mexico and Africa. 888888888888888 6666666666666666666666666666 777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777 ************************************************** | |

Nevada Governor Kenny Guinn announces MAJOR presidential disaster declaration for clark, lincoln counties By Office of the GovernorFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 8, 2005 Contact Greg Bortolin or John Trent 775-684-5670 CARSON CITY Gov. Kenny Guinn today announced that President George W. Bush has declared a major disaster designation for Clark and Lincoln Counties, based on damage done by major flooding in January. The disaster declaration triggers the release of federal funds for the two southern Nevada counties to mitigate damage from the flooding. Gov. Guinn had declared a State of Emergency for Clark and Lincoln Counties on Jan. 13, and sought assistance from the federal government for funding for the two counties. Preliminary assessments indicate that about $4.5 million in flooding damage was done to Clark County, with flooding damage assessments at $9.4 million for Lincoln County. The Presidential designation is critical to the restoration of the public infrastructure damaged by the January floods, Gov. Guinn said. Southern Nevada has been through a difficult period this winter, and this funding source will be a major boost to the region during its recovery. Based on the declaration, the federal government will provide funds through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to the state and local governments and certain non-profit organizations. FEMA reimbursement will include debris removal, and the repair or replacement of damaged public facilities. The declaration also activates the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, which provides assistance to state and local governments for actions taken to prevent or reduce long-term risk to life and property from natural or technological hazards. The approved declaration denied the Governors request for monies to pay for damage to individual property and businesses. The State of Nevada, however, is looking to other federal agencies for possible reimbursement and to assist individual Nevadans in their recovery. The approved federal declarations will be administered by the Department of Public Safety, Division of Emergency Management. Frank Siracusa, Chief of the Division of Emergency Management, has been designated by Gov. Guinn as the State Coordinating Officer. The Small Business Administration has already declared the area as a disaster, and has begun accepting applications for assistance for home and small business owners to apply for federal grants to rebuild their property and make improvements to prevent or minimize similar damage in the future. LATEST TAXATION REVENUE STATISTICS GOOD NEWS FOR NEVADA By Dr. Kenny C. Guinn*1We are experiencing an unprecedented period of growth in our states economy. As I have mentioned before as your Governor, it is essential that the people of Nevada share in this good fortune. In January, based on a sizable surplus in the budget, I announced a $300 million vehicle registration rebate to the citizens of Nevada. As the Legislature works to make sure that the states funding priorities are met with reasonable allocations, this $300 million rebate will provide further stimulus to our strong economy, and will allow the largest number of Nevadans to benefit directly from work done by the 2003 Legislature to broaden and stabilize the states tax base. The good news does not stop here. Nevadas largest economic indicator, statewide taxable sales for December 2004, show statewide taxable sales exceeded more than $4.2 billion and represented a 17.4 percent increase over December 2003, and a 15.5 percent increase for the six months of fiscal year 2004-2005. The continuing double-digit sales tax growth clearly illustrates how attractive our state is, for our citizens, our visitors and the businesses that are choosing to relocate to Nevada at record rates. Nevadas growth has been phenomenal for nearly two decades the State Demographer announced last week that Nevada, for the 18th consecutive year, is the fastest growing state in the country. This influx of growth, coupled with the remarkable economic recovery the state has shown post-9/11, has helped make Nevada one of the nations most remarkable success stories. Nevada is the nations leader in job growth and has posted an unemployment level of under 4 percent well below the national average. The states economy has shown great increases in nearly every significant area, from building materials to automobile sales to general merchandise. More Nevadans are working at well-paying jobs, with more disposable income, than ever before. Incredible double-digit gains in taxable sales are being realized in our two most populous counties, Clark and Washoe. In the coming months, as evidenced by the surplus that will enable the $300 million rebate to become reality, Nevada will continue to see the tangible benefits of a strong statewide economy. ------------------------------------- Reference *1.
